a las vegas. describe how they feel moments after a gunman opened fire on campus, killing at least three people. good evening. i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. police say they killed the suspect in this afternoon shooting. >> and for a breakdown of what happened, we go to abc7 news anchor karina nova who is in the

newsroom for us tonight. karina >> dan and ama, we should exactly more details of exactly what happened in a press briefing that's expected to happen within the next hour. and actually it just started right now. we're going to get more details right now. so let's go ahead and take that live and listen in. good evening >> thanks for coming. my name is kevin mcmahill and i'm the sheriff of the las vegas metropolitan police department. first, i would like to reiterate to all of you that there is no more ongoing threat to our community here in las vegas. i also like to tell you that we do know the identity of the suspect in this case, but i will not be releasing his name tonight until after the next of kin notification on, as you all know , of course, this is a tragic day for all of us in southern nevada. and it is approximately 11:45 a.m. lvmpd dispatch received reports of an active shooter at the unlv campus. you unl campus. unlv campus police

responded to the scene and engaged the suspect immediately right outside of beam hall. lvmpd officers also responded simultaneously. i can tell you today three of the victims are confirmed deceased. there is a fourth victim who suffered a gunshot wound and is now currently in sunrise hospital, upgraded to stable condition in in addition to that, there were four additional people who were transported from the scene to nearby hospitals suffering from panic attacks. two of our officers were treated at umc for minor injuries, which were received while searching the vast rooms and buildings for victims at unlv. our hearts go out to the entire unlv community. no student should have to fear pursuing, pursue their dreams on a college campus. what happened today is a heinous, unforgivable crime. but

i want you all to know something . it's a crime that we train for each and every day when there is an active shooter threat. the men and women of the southern nevada first responder community police, fire and ems come together to respond quickly and decisively with zero hesitation within minutes, both on and off duty responders, race to the campus to prevent further loss of life. on a personal note, i'll tell you that after 1st october and all the time and effort and energy that we've put together in training with the men and women of law enforcement , the fire service and ems, watching how seamlessly they work together. today made me very, very proud to be their sheriff. importantly there was a gathering just outside of the building where the students were playing games and eating food. there were tables set up for them to build legos, and if it

hadn't been for the heroic actions of one of those police officers who responded, there could have been countless additional lives taken. armed confront one of the suspect by law enforcement stopped the suspects further actions. i'm proud of the courage of these officers and the unlv campus police and how they demonstrated that today. and with that, i'm going to introduce the governor of the great state of nevada, joe lombardo. governor, thank you. >> kevin, thank you. thank you for the opportunity to speak tonight. i think it's important for people to realize the partnership that is formed as a result of my career at lvmpd and with kevin, the sheriff himself and the confidence that i was assured of when i got notified today, i had no doubt that the response would be appropriate,

it would be swift, it would be quick to the satisfaction of all the naysayers that we normally experience during critical incidents. and today, lvmpd did a fantastic job along with the university pd did a fantastic job, and after the after action is settled here in our concern for the victims are bolstered and satisfied. i i will be absolutely proud of the response of the first responders. i'll be absolutely proud of the community of unlv and i'll be absolutely proud of the community of las vegas and the state of nevada. i had some formal comments to be said, but the important piece is i'm here to show the solidarity between the community and the law enforcement community and ensure on behalf of the state of nevada , we are here to help provide resources is to the benefit of the victims and to express my

concern for the victims and favorable thoughts to the families and to ensure that we move forward as a society and as a community and to assure the community we are doing everything within our ability to address these situations appropriately and with the knowledge that we have received on a continual basis. so kevin, thank you. i appreciate that. and i think it's appropriate that the chief of upd comes up and says a few words and the positive response of his police department. so chief alex garcia, please. thank you. good evening. my name is adam garcia. >> i'm the university police chief. first of all, let me begin by by telling you all how heartbroken we are on our campus

for what happened today on behalf of the chancellor, the board of regents and president whitfield i am passing along our profound sense of loss for what occurred in the loss of life that took place. is the sheriff said our officers collectively upd, as well as metro, responded to a call for shots fired approximately 1145 to 2 of our detectives responded to the scene. it immediately engaged the suspect in a shootout. the suspect was struck and is deceased at this time. the campus was almost immediately closed and out of an abundance of caution, the all nevada system of higher education institutions in southern nevada were as well closed and unlv will remain closed for the remainder of today and tomorrow and friday. and additional

determinations will be made as to whether or not the school, the university will reopen next week, which will be finals week. so with that, i will turn it over to commissioner gibson. >> thank you, chief. i'm jim gibson, the chairman of the clark county commission. and i'm here to express the shock that we all felt as a community. but at the same time, the enormous relief that we feel as a result of the great work of the first responders, we want everyone to know that anyone who has been affected will have the resources available. >> you're listening to officials in las vegas, nevada, comment on this terrible shooting today that killed three people and injured a number of others police. and this is a police commissioner here, university police chief, as well as the local sheriff and the governor of nevada, all expressed their concern and walking people through what happened. >> yeah, and they say that the

identity of the shooter, they do know it. however, they are not releasing it. they will not be releasing it tonight because there pending notification of next of kin. >> that's right. and of course, the one question everyone will want to know why? why did this happen? we've been sending updates about this shooting like the one earlier today with a link to a live special report with the latest, you can get breaking news alerts sent to your mobile device by downloading the abc seven news bay area app and enabling the notifications feature for now to new developments in the case of toddlers who drowned in a pool at a san jose daycare. >> the owners of that daycare made their first court appearance today. and a family member of one of the victims is sharing the loss. abc seven news south bay reporter zach fuentes was in court today and tells us what happened. >> they trusted these people. they not only were responsive for these children, they were being paid for it. >> it was a difficult day in court wednesday for this woman who says she is the grandmother of one year old payton cobb, cobb and lillian hannon, who was also one year old, both drowned on october second in a backyard

pool at this san jose at home daycare. one other child was also found in the pool and survived. >> nobody sends kids out into the backyard. three toddlers to play by themselves. those defendants are nina feticide and her mother, shaheen glaucescens. >> both owners of the daycare, the santa clara county da's office said globicornis went to another. unlike licensed daycare that day, she left four children with feticide, according to the investigation report, golovkin's husband, propped open the pool gate with a closed hanging rack and did not close it while feticide was making breakfast. she left one child in a crib and three others in the backyard area. unsuper advised. investigators said that five minutes later she discovered one of the children floating in the pool. she performed cpr. her brother found the two other children floating unconscious in the pool's deep end. >> the defendants had one job. most important above all, which was to return them to their parents safely. they did not do that. >> both women were charged with felony child endangerment. now a big update in their first court appearance wednesday. the prosecutor added seven other misdemeanor charges separate from the charges filed for the

drownings. deputy district attorney o'brien kenny did not elaborate more on the circumstances surrounding those new charges. their arraignment was pushed because a translator was not available. neither the women or their attorneys wanted to comment following their appearance. legal analyst stephen clark said the defense will have its work cut out for them. >> i think it's going to be important for the defense to start focusing on what notice did these two defendants have about the possibility of that gate being propped open and having those children have access to a pool so close to a daycare? >> the next court appearance is set for december 28th in san jose. zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> all parts of the bay area got a good dousing on this wet wednesday. these showers moved through martinez this afternoon. abc seven news meteorologist sandyha patel says do not put those umbrellas away just yet. sandhya that's right. >> you're going to need those umbrellas not just tonight but tomorrow as well. let's look at a live picture right now from sfo where we have a wet runway day. the showers are going to continue to move through as we

go to live, doppler seven, i'm going to show you where we are seeing some of the steadier rain which is out towards the inland east bay right around concord. clayton clayton road. this is street level radar are heading down towards the santa cruz mountains. also seeing some rain right now across highway nine, highway 17. and you know, if you travel 17, it's dicey when it's raining. satellite radar showing you the snow that is falling in the sierra. so we go hour by hour and we do have some moderate pockets of rain that will continue for parts of the bay area this evening, becoming isolated tomorrow morning. here comes the next round between nine and noon is when you'll notice some scattered showers still continuing into the early afternoon as far as the storm impact scale today and tomorrow, we have those scattered showers, brief downpours and rough surf and breezy conditions. here's a look at the evening forecast. inland areas looking at rain at 6:00. fog forming later on this evening. temperatures dropping to the 50s bayside. also showers with temperatures going from the mid 50s to low 50s and from

child sexual assault case against him. deputy da greg chiarella is the prosecutor on the case. >> anytime that someone in a position of trust has apparently betrayed that trust, it is a very serious matter. >> the pastor's attorney asked for the arraignment to be continued to january and did not enter a plea on hernandez's behalf. >> i am very new to the case. i just received the formal complaint in court today and i have received no evidence at all . >> i first confronted the 53 year old pastor of iglesia pentecostal movimento da gloria in richmond for our report. last friday. victor. i'm dan noyes from channel seven. i need to talk to you. would you do an interview with me, please, about what? i'd like to talk to you about the accusations is that young girls and young women are making against you of sexual abuse. will you talk to me, please? the 21 year old daughter of a church elder told me when she was 13, the pastor tried to convince her it was god's will, that they have sex.

alvarado-niles road heading into boulevard. also go out towards pittsburg, antioch, you will notice across highway four four, you will definitely need to give yourself a little more time for any outdoor plans that you have. perhaps you want to do some holiday shopping or you want to run some errands is just watch out. in the sierra, we are seeing snow. as you look at the wider picture here, the front is moving in. behind the front. we have this area of low pressure that is going to come through with some cold, unstable air. and that's where we are going to see some more showers now out ahead of that storm. we have been seeing the surf getting kicked up, a high surf advisory is in effect until tomorrow morning. 14 footers right now at point arena, large breakers, 18 to 22ft. there's a higher risk of rip currents. so be careful. beach hazard statement for the northern portion of monterey bay with those strong currents. hazardous swimming definitely keep that in mind. that hazard statement up until 4 a.m. tomorrow. winds are gusty right now, 21 in livermore, 23 san
