news >> rain, fog and snow all making for a winter weather mix tonight . high surf at our beaches, slick roads in the sierra and the impact on your morning commute. we are tracking it all. good evening. i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. there's plenty going on out there and plenty to get you ready for tomorrow. it ranks as a level one in our exclusive abc seven storm impact scale heading into thursday and abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking it all sandhya. >> yeah. and as we take a look at a live picture right now, dan and ama from zephyr cove, you will see that they have been dealing with some snow. right

now it is gusty up there and they're still seeing some light snow across the region. as we take a look at live doppler seven satellite and radar will show you the snow that has been pushing through their chain controls right now on all roads going up locally. we do still have some isolated showers as we get you into street level radar in the north bay novato ignacio boulevard heading into marinwood and sears point. we are seeing the wet weather hourly forecast showing you our next round will be arriving after 7:00 am. so first things first, we will see some fog and then by 10:00 it's in the north bay. the rain starts to shift by the lunch hour. here's what you need to know. it's a level one storm through tomorrow. scattered showers, brief downpours, rough surf and breezy conditions are expected. and here is a look at the travel hazard in the morning. some dense fog with slippery roads, even if it's not raining everywhere. the wet weather from tonight is going to play a role. reduced visibility could last until mid-morning. so remember to drive slowly and use caution with your low beams on. i'll be back with a look at that

spotted in the student union and was killed in a shootout with police. >> the gunman had applied to be a professor at unlv but was not hired. and abc news has learned he also had put together a 15 page document claiming to have decoded some of the messages of the notorious zodiac killer. abc7 news reporter lauren martinez spoke with a bay area student at unlv who was on campus when the shooting happened. >> run, hide, fight urgent alerts at the university of nevada, las vegas rang out wednesday morning to warn students of an active shooter. >> authorities say three people were killed and the suspect died in a shootout with campus officers as a parent, you uh, there are no words for what you feel. >> you just it's indescribable the feeling that you have when you you don't know. >> police say the suspect started shooting inside beam hall, home to the business school. unlv student shayna alipon said she heard the gunfire from inside the student union building next door, made

her way down the stairs of the building just to escape. >> and while we were walking down the stairs, we heard even more gunshots. and i was like, oh, my gosh, i hope he doesn't come. i hope the shooters didn't come to the building where at once alipon was across the street. >> she took the cell phone videos of students funneling out to safety. alipon is just three weeks away from graduating with a journalism degree. >> veteran chief. he was kind of snapping me out of it. he was like, hey, can i borrow your phone? we gotta take video of this. where you know, we're the press. and i was like, oh, shoot, you're right. >> meanwhile, bay area native kaitlin tineo was on the other side of campus when she got the alert from the school. this is not a test run hide fight. so then i ran to the student apartment across the street because i knew people who live here. >> and then i've just been here ever since. >> campus will be closed for the remainder of the week. >> i don't feel safe anymore at all. a final day next week and

plant. now this has nothing to do with the recent flaring incidents at a chevron refinery in the city. those resulted in air quality officials issuing several violations. now, the mayor put out this statement about sewage plant. the sewage plant we're talking about. it reads in part, quote, there are some things that are non-negotiable unless you're completely desperate. governments have a duty to provide residents with those non-negotiable bubbles. the air we breathe is one of those things. >> an arrest made by bart police led to the rescue of several puppies. police spotted a reported stolen car in the oakland coliseum bart parking lot today. officers attempted to stop the driver, but they kept going. now, during a short pursuit, they noticed a dog leap out a car window. the driver eventually stopped and was taken into custody. police found several puppies inside the car and turned them over. oh, look at that. to the animal control. fortunately, the dog that escaped was not found. >> well, tonight's 92nd annual tree lighting ceremony in sacramento was fun, but it was

ferry building came alive for its annual holiday open house. >> that's a core of our business. the holiday season. so it starts from about november and goes through february for valentine's at rickety confections, shoppers were making their rounds for some sweet treats, although foot traffic is still not at pre-pandemic levels. but because of the effort that the business, the ferry building has put into all of the merchants, it's been maintaining the flow. the ferry building wasn't the only place that kicked off their holiday festivities on wednesday, either. >> up the hill in chinatown. things also got off to a roaring start in this neighborhood. the chinatown merchants association hosted its holiday lights festival. >> the cluster of businesses is what makes chinatown special because you can be on the same block and there is entertainment , there is food, there is a bar. there is there are small restaurants that you can visit after the apec summit failed to provide the boost in business that was hoped for.

taking action san francisco live event, city leaders promised us they see things changing by taking a more forceful approach tonight. abc seven news reporter luz pena is looking at what the city is doing to solve the problem and what's standing in the way. >> there are nearly 8000 homeless individuals in san francisco, according to the latest count, and the city spends 5% of its $14 billion budget tackling homeless minus when questioning the top three city leaders on this crisis, the audience pointed out many of those living on the streets seemingly disappeared during apec and dreamforce and the audience wanted to know why and how it was done so quickly. >> we've made significant progress, and the fact is it wasn't because of apec. we made progress because we got clarity on a court decision in mayor breed blamed part of the homeless crisis on the ninth circuit court decision that prevented the city from moving people who declined shelter.

>> we were not able to move people the way that we're able to move people now. the court decision came after a lawsuit was brought forth by the coalition on homelessness. the executive director for the coalition was sitting in the front row when the mayor pointed out the legal challenge. >> swease have groups that are suing the city for the things that we are and aren't doing. did you notice that she looked at you when she talked about suing the city? >> i did notice that, yeah. and you know, the lawsuit suit is a way for us to push the city to have more shelter. guess what? they added more shelter beds since we filed this lawsuit. >> according to the mayor, the city offered 300 people housing and shelter in the month of november. only 100 accepted the executive director for code tenderloin pushed back on why many tell her they decline shelter. >> people are turning down shelter because it's not a safe place for them. we have to come with out-of-the-box solutions. >> a recent san francisco report found 54% of people experiencing

homelessness declined. >> shelter district attorney jenkins, is there anything legal that can be done? so i think the recourse is obviously outside of the criminal justice system. >> but is it? it is. i mean, the criminal justice system is just say no, i'm camping here. well no, they have to be made to be uncomfortable is the truth of the matter. we cannot make it comfortable for them to pitch a tent on our sidewalks and stay. >> abc seven take action. san francisco also brought opposing views face to face after the town hall, we noticed chief scott and the executive director for the coalition on homelessness talking. we asked about it the end of the day, you know, they ask not just for jennifer and me, but i think for everybody is we have to work together on these things. >> we're not going to always agree after one hour of tough questions for san francisco's top leaders, there was consensus . >> what we need more of is more of this. we need to have more sessions and more working groups where people can come together. >> in san francisco, luz pena, abc seven news.

>> now, if you missed the town hall, there are still ways to watch. the take action event is now available on the abc7 news bay area streaming app. you can find it wherever you stream and the full conversation will air on tv this saturday at 9 p.m. and sunday at 6 p.m. check that out when you have time. >> it's really well worth your time. some sad news to share tonight about a beaver rescued last week in palo alto. >> yeah, today, the wildlife center of silicon valley announced that beaver died. the beaver was lethargic and also disoriented and ended oriented when they took her in. >> yeah, she was eating well, but was found dead on monday. the wildlife center says it had run a number of tests, but they came back inconclusive. so it's not clear what killed that beaver. >> yeah, they are going to send it to a state laboratory for more analysis. that's a shame. >> well, new at 11 it's not what any 40 niners fan wants to see before a big rivalry game. a couple of fans were surprised with a real mix up in the mail. abc seven news reporter j.r stone has more on what came next

seahawks jersey sent to me for any 40 niners fan. that's about the worst thing you could send him. >> even the label on the package said san francisco 40 niners men's team color scarlet a fanatics representative issued this statement saying this fan had his jersey accidentally switched out with a different customized jersey during packaging at our warehouse. once we learned of the issue, we immediately reached out to the fan to make this right and will ensure he gets the correct product asap. the seahawks jersey was shipped from a warehouse in las vegas, but matt says he was initially curious if it was being shipped from seattle or if fanatics is based there, which it is not. >> i was wondering if it was a northwest company myself. so yeah, my uncle that lives in seattle laughed his stuff about it. >> fanatics who initially told paul they would send him a free return shipping label ended up fully refunding the jersey. a day after we reached out to them about this. paul then ordered

another jersey for matt on 40 niners.com which he later learned is run by fanatics j.r. stone abc seven news mix up you can't do that i know i was waiting to hear about that full refund yeah right i'll bet it's coming. >> all right, let's turn our attention back to the weather forecast. really wild day around here. yeah. >> and more. more rain to come, sandhya. absolutely >> we have one more day of some wet weather on the way. ama and dan. let me show you the rainfall totals over the last 24 hours. you may be happy to hear that. we're on a roll here. so far, 9000/700 in kentfield picking up about seven hundredths in livermore, oakland 1100. san jose 400. santa rosa, a third of an inch of rain. a live view from our golden gate bridge camera and you can certainly see raindrops on the lens. the roadways are still slick out there. and check out the view from our zephyr cove. heavy snowfall right now. the winds are blowing. this is something that obviously is a good thing that we are seeing

this, especially while people are sleeping. we'll take any snow we can get. winter weather advisory until 10 p.m. tomorrow, 5 to 10in of snow, 12 to 18in above 7000ft. now, the snow level will be lowering to 4500 by morning. so carry chains if you're going out of town and heading up to the mountains to enjoy the fresh snow. let's look at live doppler seven right now. and there is an isolated shower that is basically moving from around san pedro road and marinwood out towards mare island in vallejo. so keep in mind, these showers are going to pop up as we head into the night and they're going to be very isolated. the pacific northwest getting slammed. they've been seeing barrage of storms coming through. rain has been inundating the area. flooding is a big concern as they've been dealing with it. and it's not over yet. and northern california has been dealing with heavy rain and that's going to continue as well. in the mountains, there's the snow. we had some downpours here in the bay area earlier today, but things have really quieted down quite a bit compared to earlier in the day. storms been

generating some big swells, high surf advisory until 4 a.m. tomorrow. large breakers 18 to 22ft. a beach hazard statement for the northern portion of monterey bay through tomorrow morning. and you can see the wave heights are up there, 13 to 15ft right now. your temperatures, because of all the cloud cover here, we're staying insulated. temperatures are in the 40s and the 50s right now. here's a look at what you can expect. winter like weather are the headlines here overnight. patchy, dense fog tomorrow, scattered showers as you're basically going to have to deal with the fog in the morning. and then friday through the weekend, we're talking about cold mornings and brighter afternoons. expect so more sun is in the forecast. but until then, it's a level one on our storm impact scale through tomorrow. scattered showers, brief downpour as rough surf and breezy conditions as we had some gusty winds earlier today, but not terribly strong tomorrow morning, we start out with that fog. look what happens as we head into 9 a.m. we start to notice the rain in the north bay. moderate pockets of rain coming through at noon time

right across the central bay. and as we head into the early afternoon crossing parts of the east and south bay. so it's not going to be an all day rain event, but it will be scattered in nature. the additional rainfall totals, anywhere from nothing measurable to about 15 hundredths of an inch. your morning temperatures will range from the upper 30s to the low 50s. watch out for the fog and some isolated showers. and then later in the morning you get the wet weather coming through. tomorrow afternoon. we are looking at temperatures in the 40s to 60s. here's a look at the accuweather seven day forecast. it's a level one for tomorrow. those scattered showers cold couple of mornings will follow friday saturday even sunday with some frost and then temperatures will recover both nighttime and daytime is going to be pretty mild weather as we head towards next week. temperatures will be primarily in the 60. dan
