with breaking news overnight about that deadly shooting on the campus of unlv in las vegas. >> the suspect has been identified as a man in his 60s. sources say he had applied for a job at the school. it's the latest american community suffering, but also coming together in the wake of violence. signs of unlv strong are now displayed across the city this morning. authorities credit the responding officers with saving countless lives when a gunman opened fire at the university of nevada, las vegas, killing three people. if it hadn't been for the heroic actions of one of those police officers who responded, there could have been countless additional lives taken just before noon yesterday. the sheriff says students were gathering outside a building that houses unlv's business school, playing games and eating food when gunfire rang out inside the building, we heard a bunch of shots and the second police got there, they went in and more shots fired. local and campus police swarmed the scene, telling people to run, hide, fight.

>> we're just going to hold up for a second. >> video shows students scrambling to get away. many fleeing buildings with their hands up, others barricading themselves in classrooms about 40 minutes after it began to university, detectives killed the suspect in a shootout outside the building. >> everybody starts running in the opposite direction. i nearly got trampled like some girl fell over herself, going down the stairs. >> police identified the suspect as 67 year old anthony polito. sources say he applied to be a professor at unlv but was not hired. investing gators were searching an apartment in henderson, nevada, believed to be polito's home last night. the community gathered for a prayer vigil. we give you pray, remembering the three lives lost with an additional victim hospitalized overnight. now upgraded to stable condition. authorities say all of the victims were faculty or staff, not students. >> it's not of last night's fiery debate among the four republicans challenging former president trump in the race for

comes to the candidates largely agreed on immigration and the economy and china chunks of time were spent debating. >> small disagrees points on the border. student loans and digital currency. they were not asked about abortion. >> truly, this was the undercard fighting to become the second candidate instead of the reality of this race that donald trump is dominating. we saw kind of a parallel world where the other candidates are trying to fight with themselves. we'll see if it works. >> former president donald trump, the frontrunner, has skipped all four debates during a town hall tuesday. he declined to rule out abusing his power. if he returns to the white house, you would never abuse power as retribution against anybody except for day one. >> chris christie last night said he does not think trump was kidding when he made that comment. >> ramaswami casted the other candidates as too close to trump. >> all three of them have been licking donald trump's boots for years. rhonda santos sidestepped questions about whether trump is fit to be president. >> want to be.

>> i think we need to have somebody younger. i think when you get up to 80, i don't think it's a job for that. is he fit or is it to do something talking about him being 80 years old doesn't mean that somebody is he fit elected. that's for the people. ron desantis is somebody who's in to finish. ron is he? we have an opportunity, somebody who is in the prime of their life. >> overnight, the superpac supporting trump slammed his rivals as writing in a statement the battle for second place has become the biggest waste of time, money and energy that politics has ever seen. ramaswami ended up with the most speaking time at the debate. desantis trailed very closely behind andrew. >> liz, thank you. the israeli military is installing pipes in gaza as they reportedly consider flooding hamas tunnels with seawater, pumping water into the tunnels could drive out hamas fighters, but it could also damage gaza's water supply. israeli officials report at least five senior hamas military leaders have now been killed. the humanitarian crisis in gaza is being described as

apocalyptic. officials say about 90% of people have inadequate food. >> us funding for the war in ukraine has been blocked by republicans in congress. they are holding up billions in aid while they demand changes to the us border policies amid a surge in border crossings. a new drone video shows migrants in california scrambling for warm clothes. >> the us military is grounding its osprey aircraft after last week's deadly crash near japan. eight airmen died during a training mission. military officials say the ospreys will be out of service pending this investigation. >> an we turn now to the loss of norman lear, a giant of american television, an he did more than make us laugh. he also made us think. it was an unprecedented move. every broadcast network last night jointly simulcasting a tribute to norman lear, who changed the face of american tv. his friend jimmy kimmel calling

>> lear was also known for his political activism. he and a partner once bought a copy of the declaration of independence for $8 million and sent it on a cross-country tour. at the 2021 golden globes, lear was given the prestigious carol burnett award honoring his many years in television. there is no greater speech ritual experience than watching 200 people laugh. >> it's enhanced my life every minute of it. truly a tv icon. >> lear died at his home. he was 101 years old, and he was working up right until the end. >> time now for your thursday weather. another storm is expected to hit the northwest today. that means more flooding near seattle where some communities are reachable only by boat. at least two deaths are being blamed on floodwaters near portland, oregon, and a third storm arrives saturday. looking at the

sun may have temporarily blinded the driver who hit them in the school parking lot. the victims are hospitalized, but alive, thanks to those teenagers. >> a new lawsuit accuses facebook and instagram of being breeding grounds for child predators. the lawsuit was filed by new mexico attorney general against parent company meta and ceo mark zuckerberg. the suit claims that facebook and instagram steer children to explicit content and let child predators find and contact minors. meta has said it works extensively to protect younger users. >> a new controversy over a proposal to ban menthol cigarets the ban, which some critics claim would unfairly target minorities, may go up in smoke. this morning. health advocates are condemning the biden administration's decision to delay a proposed ban on menthol cigarets, claiming the white house is putting politics over health. the delay comes after intense lobbying from tobacco companies and from civil rights groups who claim a ban on the cigarets, which are popular among black smokers, would lead

to racial targeting by police. >> peddling stories. big tobacco is that we're going to go out and arrest african americans if they use menthol cigarets. but that's not the case at all. >> data shows nearly 85% of black smokers smoke menthols, which the cdc says can be more addictive than regular cigarets the american lung association saying an average of 45,000 black americans die each year from smoking related diseases. >> don't know how black lives matter. if you're willing to put 45,000 lives at risk, the white house not yet explaining its decision to delay. >> but among the groups who've been fighting the ban are the national organization of black law enforcement executives and the national association of blacks in criminal justice. both groups list big tobacco companies among their sponsors. the opponents of the menthol ban argue it would unfairly target minorities and would only create an underground black market. but supporters argue the ban will go a long way to improve public health. >> we can't rid reduce tobacco use and associated disease and death without eliminating
