coast storm. severe weather bringing damaging winds and hail to the south. >> it looks like it's moving to the east coast in time for the weekend, targeting the i-95 corridor, of course. ginger has the timing and track ahead. >> we begin with breaking news overnight. special counsel investigating hunter biden has filed nine federal tax related charges against the president's son, saying he engaged in a four year scheme to cheat the government out of at least $1.4 million in federal taxes. chief justice correspondent pierre thomas starts us off. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: george, good morning. the special counsel has indicted the president's son for the second time in three months. the process laying out in chapter and verse some of the most troubling aspects of hunter biden's life. today hunter biden wakes up facing a nine count federal indictment, six misdemeanors and three felony charges. special counsel david weiss accusing the president's son of failing to pay $1.4 million in taxes from 2016 to 2019.

all done, according to weiss, at a time when biden was living an extravagant lifestyle. prosecutors claim biden spent his money on drug, escorts and girlfriends, luxury hotels and rental properties, exotic cars, clothing. in short, everything but his taxes. those expense include more than $600,000 in payments to various women. another $397,000 on clothing and accessories. and more than $180,000 on adult entertainment. including porn. hunter biden admitted many of his short comingses in his latest memoir, tying many of his poor decisions to a crack cocaine addiction that had gone out of control. >> i went one time for 13 days without sleeping and smoking crack and drinking vodka exclusively throughout that entire time. >> reporter: according to the special counsel, hunter biden earned millions of dollars from foreign entities in ukraine,

romania and china, leaving him to spend wildly. his business dealings and personal failings have become fodder for republicans seeking to harm his father politically and house republicans have launched impeachment proceedings against president biden focusing on hunter, but so far without any evidence of wrongdoing by the president. >> hunter biden is a private citizen and this was a personal matter for him. as we have said, the president, the first lady, they love their son and they support him as he continues to rebuild his life. >> reporter: the president steadfastly supportive. >> i'm very proud of my son. >> reporter: the indictment is the latest consequence of hunter biden's plea deal falling apart this past summer. under that deal, the justice department agree not to prosecute a gun charge and hunter biden would plead guilty to two misdemeanor tax violations. after the deal disintegrated the u.s. attorney from delaware,

appointed by president trump, indicted biden on the gun charge in september and last night he made good on his threat to pursue tax charges. but this morning hunter biden's attorneys are pushing back noting that he has paid back all of his taxes and penalties and has battled back from his crack cocaine addiction. last night attorney abby lowell released this statement saying, quote, based on the facts and the law, if hunter's last name was anything other than biden, the charges in delaware and now california would not have been brought. george? >> thanks. let's start with dan abrams. what do you make of the agreement? >> look, i think he had a very strong agreement in that regard on the gun charge, right. on the lying, over drug use, on a federal gun form. based on this set of fact, one gun, no other crime, no criminal record, not used in a crime, there hadn't been another case that was prosecuted like that. on this one, it's a little closer. when you're talking about tax

fraud, there are nuances, right? how much money? talking $1.4 million. a big number. not a massive number. >> usually if you pay it back the charges aren't brought. >> usually if you do. but it does require a level of intent, etc. it's not sort of out of the box that he's been charged here. look, as a legal matter now, it's tough. meaning, his best argument is the one that abby lowell made which is he should never have been charged. now that he has been charged, he's in a tough spot. i mean, these cases can be hard to defend. they're going to be able to say, we have the documents. we have the paperwork that proves he didn't pay his taxes. and that he had the money to pay his taxes and just decided to use it on other stuff. >> the earlier plea agreement fell apart which is why with ear here today. is a deal out of the question? >> i think it's very unlikely that you could reach a deal now. we're talking about a world of difference from that deal. right? we were talking about two

misdemeanor counts and no time. now we're talking about, just in this case, three felonies, six misdemeanors. the other case a felony. talking about the possibility of decades behind bars. these are very serious cases. i think president biden, at some point, is going to have to think long and hard about the possibility of a pardon. >> dan abrams, thank you very much. juju. >> okay, george and dan. the saga continues. now to the latest overnight on the backlash after tuesday's hearing at the capitol with the presidents of mit, penn and harvard. a former inquiry is being opened now. selina wang is on the hill. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, juju. that fallout from the congressional testimony of harvard, mit and u penn is mounting after chair virginia fox said the presidents' statements in response to rampant anti-semitism on their campuses is unacceptable. the house education committee is launching a new inquiry. the inquiry is expected to look at whether they do enough to

protect their own student, and fox said the panel will, quote, not hesitate to issue subpoenas. now, the presidents of harvard and u penn have issued statements walking back, trying to clarify their testimony, but already donors and alumni are calling for them to step down. on thursday the u penn board held a hastily scheduled meeting but a spokes person tells me that for now, there are no board plans for imminent leadership change. demarco? >> all right, selina. thank you very much for that report. now to new details in that deadly campus shooting rampage in nevada as we learn more about the gunman and the victims. whit johnson is there live. good morning to you. >> reporter: demarco, good morning. as authorities are still trying to understand a motive, we're getting a much clearer picture of the chaos that unfolded on the campus here of unlv. the first officers responding on scene within 78 second, taking the suspect down a short time later. but a warning, the video you're

about to see is disturbing. these are the terrifying final moments of the unlv school shooting. surveillance video showing the suspect wearing a long coat, pursuing a campus police officer who then turns around and opens fire, killing the suspect. >> these two detectives are heroes. they risked their lives in order to save countless others. >> reporter: authorities say the 67-year-old shooter was armed with a handgun purchased legally and nine magazines. the former professor had applied for positions at unlv and other universities across the state but was denied at all of them. and police say the suspect had a list of people he was targeting and spent several minutes looking for them but was unsuccessful and shot other victims who happened to be in the building instead. >> we have contacted almost everyone on those lists to make sure that they are all right. >> reporter: authorities also say they recovered 22 letters that the suspect sent to university personnel nationwide.

at least one containing a white powder. tests later confirming it was talcalm powder. paul whitington was in one of the shooter's classes where he taught for 15 years. >> he kept a running log of every single negative that a student said about him. he would try to figure out who wrote the negative feed back. >> reporter: in his writing, the suspect dove deep into conspiracies claiming he decoded messages from the infamous zodiac killer. investigators searching his home in nevada, finding more ammunition. now a heart broken community remembering the lives lost. two victims identified 39-year-old patricia valez an assistant professor in the accounting department. and 64-year-old professor cha chang known as jerry. >> he was an excellent individual who tried to impart knowledge and kept on researching to better the field.

i really did respect how he helped us as a professor. >> reporter: and police say none of those victims were among the suspect's intended targets. george? >> whit johnson, thanks. in new york shots were fired outside a synagogue just hours before the start of hanukkah. no one was hurt but children were inside. a suspect is in custody. aaron katersky has the latest. >> the suspect is charged with unlawful gun possession. this morning authorities are investigating whether the shooting should be charged as a federal hate crime. it was around 2 p.m. thursday afternoon when police said a man fired a shot gun in the parking lot of temple israel in albany. nobody was hurt but the synagogue's preschool was in session and immediately locked down. the suspect, the governor said, made threatening statements, was taken into custody. police say the shooter was heard shouting free palestine. temple israel is one of dozens of new york synagogues recently targeted with phoney bomb threats. every anti-semitic act the governor called unacceptable.

but that shots were fired hours before the start of hanukkah she called even more deplorable. synagogues and mosques have been on high alert since the october 7th start of the israel/hamas war. earlier this week, in fact, the fbi director said anti-semitism was reaching historic levels in the country saying jews were the victims of the majority of hate crimes. just after the department of homeland security issued new safety guidelines to house of worship. juju? >> aaron, thank you. to the latest on israel's war against hamas. outrage growing over video of detained palestinians as the idf said the men are captured hamas terror suspects. our foreign correspondent james longman is on the ground in israel. good morning, james. >> reporter: good morning, juju. we witnessed a series of huge explosions in northern gaza behind me, you can see the smoke rising. the idf said they're going after hamas infrastructure and tunnels, but the situation in the south is growing even more desperate. the united nations said society is on the brink of collapse. this as israel steps up its attention.

this morning outrage as new video from gaza shows palestinian men stripped down to their underwear kneeling in rows with hands behind their back, surrounded by israeli soldiers. israel said the men are capture hamas terror suspects. we pressed the idf on that claim. do you consider these to be terrorists or civilians? >> israel does not arrest, apprehend or target anyone in the gaza strip that is not a hamas terrorist or poses an imminent threat to israel. >> then i saw the video. wow. i recognize this street. >> reporter: i spoke to one man who said he recognizes his brother and nephew from these images. he said they are both civilians, detained by the idf. >> the power players have plans for gaza or the middle east. i hope that does not come at the expense of my family. i want them to be safe. there are a lot of parents there. this is not in any way proportional. this is not you feeling sorry

for the israelis. it's not empty your heart for sympathy for the palestinians for suffering. >> reporter: committee to protect journalists say another man is a palestine correspondent and they are demanding his release. another video showing similarly stripped men packed in the back of moving army trucks. this morning massive explosions in northern gazank sky in smoke. this as israeli operations in the south ramp up, the war moving. the idf say they have reached hamas defense lines and this is where palestinians had been told to go for safety. these young girls, covered in dust, escaping death. the u.n. says nearly 1.9 million palestinians are now displaced in gaza. with food scarce, lines like these forming just for flour. now a u.s. official tells abc news israel is considering pumping sea water into the tunnels below gaza, hoping to degrade hamas capabilities. that could also destroy filters that provide drinking water to

civilians. as the war passes the two-month mark, overnight in israel, families of hostages coming together to mark the start of hannukah. among those still missing, eight americans. >> we want negotiations. we understand every day they are there jeopardize their life. we need action. >> reporter: now, agonizing wait for these families. 137 hostages still inside. these families are pushing the government to try to do more to bring them home. in the occupied west bank, six palestinians were killed overnight. that's 270 dead since this war began. in 2023, more than 430 palestinians have now been killed there. demarco? >> all right, james. thank you for that report. turning to the jobs report due out. it's a big test for the economy and should shed light on inflation as we head into the new year. elizabeth schulze is at the department of labor with more. >> reporter: good morning, demarco.

this critical report from the labor department here will show us american employers are still hiring at a strong pace. 199,000 jobs were added to the work force in november. that was a bit more than expected. the biggest gains were in the health care industry. 30,000 came from the end of the uaw strike as autoworkers return to work. this report will likely keep the fed in wait and see mode. the fed is expected to keep interest rates on hold, for now, which is a relief if you're taking out a home loan or paying off credit card debt. in positive news for worker, this report is expected to show that wages are outpacing inflation. in other words, on average, american salaries are going up at a faster pace than the prices they pay. guys? >> good news there. elizabeth, thank you very much. coming up a manhunt is under way in texas after the murder of a 16-year-old cheerleader. we'll tell you what we know

low on fuel. it attempted to land in a nearby open field. of course, we've got a lot more ahead including how police departments are working to catch suspected porch pirates during the shopping rush. that's coming up. >> now we turn to texas and a small town shattered after the murder of a 16-year-old girl. a cheerleader was found' dead by her mother after she was missing from the town's christmas parade. stephanie ramos here are the story. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: hi there, george. good morning. the mother of a 16-year-old high school cheerlead r said she was the one who made the horrendous discovery of her daughter's murdered body in their apartment, and she's demanding answers. this morning it's a murder mystery that has a tight knit texas community on edge and searching for answers. >> 16-year-old female not conscious. mother is the caller stating she is not conscious. >> reporter: a manhunt is under way for a suspect authorities say killed the 16-year-old high school cheerleader lisbeth medina in the small town of edna, outside houston. >> my head is spinning.

i just want answers. i want justice. >> reporter: her mother speaking to our station ktrk, saying she made the gruesome discovery tuesday evening inside their apartment when she says she didn't see lisbeth performing in the christmas parade. >> nobody ever wants to see your child the way i saw her. >> reporter: no arrests have been made. authorities are referring to the case as capital murder. >> she was a kind heart. she would help anybody, even if she didn't have it. >> reporter: overnight the high school football team honoring their fallen classmate who used to cheer them on all wearing purple. lisbeth's family exhausting their efforts to find answers. >> he took an angel from me. not only from me, but from a lot of people who loved her. you will pay.

you will pay. >> reporter: the texas penal code describes capital murder as the murder committed in the course of another major crime and is punishable by the death penalty or life in prison. guys, police are still actively searching for a suspect. >> heart breaking story there. >> absolutely. stephanie ramos, thank you. now the alaska airplane pilot accused of trying to disable the engines and take down a commercial plane with more than 80 passengers on board. the charges against joseph emerson have been dropped to misdemeanor charges. our transportation correspondent gio benitez is here with more. good morning, gio. >> reporter: hey, juju, good morning. that pilot has been released on $50,000 bail. this case is shining a light on mental health in the cockpit. this morning that off duty pilot who police say tried to take down a commercial plane is out on bond after appearing in court thursday. the judge ruling he can't have any contact or be within 30 feet of a plane. alaska airlines pilot joseph

emerson made headlines in october when he hitched a ride in the cockpit jump seat with 84 people on board. he allegedly told investigators he had taken psychedelic mushrooms for the first time some 48 hours before the incident and thought he was having a nervous breakdown after going without sleep for 40 hours. emerson claimed he suffered from mental health issues before the incident even happened. listen to the on duty pilot. >> after one moment of going a little bit overboard, we put him in the back. >> reporter: those pilots telling police emerson engaged in casual conversation but then he threw his head set across the cockpit and announced i am not okay. then reaching up and grabbing the red fire handles and pulling them down. a pilot physically engaged with emerson for 25, 30 seconds. had emerson pulled the handles all the way down, the plane would have turned into a glider within seconds. former commercial pilot john nance said pilots must be able to talk about their mental health.

>> a pilot has to be able to put himself in a position of saying, i have got a problem, without wrecking his career as a direct result. >> reporter: emerson pleading not guilty to 83 misdemeanor counts of reckless endangerment and one felony count of endangering an aircraft. overnight his wife saying he never intended to hurt anyone. >> i hope they would also understand the condition that my husband was in during that flight. >> reporter: and this comes just a day after aviation leaders in this country sounded the alarm on mental health, saying rules need to change to encourage pilots to come forward if they have any issues, guys? >> what a story, gio. thank you very much. now to a crackdown on suspected porch pirates with the holiday shopping season in full swing. after a spike in package theft, some police departments are finding new ways to catch the thieves. trevor ault is here with this story. good morning to you, trevor. >> reporter: good morning,

demarco. every year we see videos of these thefts. every year we are enraged by them. now police across the country are trying to be more proactive. they are laying out bait to try to catch suspected thieves. holiday package thieves beware. police departments across the country are cracking down on suspected porch pirates. sacramento pd using bait packages filled with trackers. some even containing high value items like ipads, aimed at catching potential criminals red handed. >> a package that a criminal thinks they're grabbing just may be the product of a police department that has a bait tag in it. >> reporter: it's not just sacramento. police in bel air, texas, outside houston, announcing on their facebook page last week operation catch grinch working with willing residents and fed up business owners to place trackers and cameras in three different locations. >> we're trying to be more strategic and putting them in high volume areas. >> reporter: brazen package theft like this one, caught on

tape and released by police in gloster township, new jersey shows a woman accused of stealing from at least three area homes. police there also using gps to track decoy packages. >> there's packages sitting on porches as we speak with a gps locater, trying to see if someone will steal them. >> reporter: officers in places like wisconsin and texas are even offering residents the option of sending deliveries straight to the police department to stamp out theft altogether. >> we probably averaged anywhere from about 3 to five or six packages a day at first. as it got nearer to christmas, it increased and we were seeing anywhere from 10 to 20 packages a day. >> reporter: we have other tips to protect yourself. you can install doorbell camera or security camera. you can schedule deliveries when you know you will be home. put a storage box on your front porch and have the packages delivered to it. that way they will be hidden. if your package is stolen, no matter how small it is, report it to the police.

months after that plea deal fell apart, the special counsel originally appointed by former president trump is come down hard on hunter biden. david weiss accusing hunter biden of failing to pay $1.4 million in taxes while living a quote extravagant lifestyle. the nine counts which include fee felonies, pegs hunter biden as out of control, spending lavishly on drugs, escorts, exotic cars and clothing. but this morning, hunter biden's attorneys are pushing back hard, saying back he's paid back in full all of the taxes and penalties as far back to his cocaine addiction which were the root of his problems. they claim the special counsel is yielding to republican pressure and that hunter biden is being unfairly treated because he's the president's son. juju? >> okay, pierre. thank you. now to the abortion battle playing out in texas. the first publicized case of its kind. a woman sued the state for emergency permission for the procedure after the fetus was diagnosed with medical condition that is almost always fatal.

the judge ruled in her favor but the state may still try to stand in her way. rachel scott has the story this morning. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: juju, good morning. we haven't seen anything like this since the fall of roe v. wade. a judge stepping in, allowing a texas woman to get an emergency abortion. a direct challenge to one of the strict estebans in the country. this morning an unprecedented challenge to the texas abortion ban. a judge intervening to allow 31-year-old kate cox to get an emergency abortion. >> the idea that ms. cox wants desperately to be a parent and this law might actually cause her to lose that ability is shocking and would be a genuine miscarriage of justice. >> reporter: at 20 weeks pregnant, cox learned her fetus has a severe abnormality and basically no chance for survival. her doctors warn continuing the pregnancy could jeopardize her own health.

>> there's no outcome here that results in us taking home a healthy baby girl. >> reporter: texas bans aborg outright, with one narrow exception to save the life of the mother or prevent irreversible damage to a major bodily function. kate told me she was almost certain she would qualify. >> i could see in this case surely i would qualify for that exemption. my doctor told me that i did not have that option to stay in texas. i was shocked. >> reporter: so she an her husband sued the state of texas. in an extraordinary live streamed court hearing her lawyer describes how kate had to go to the emergency room four times in just the last month. >> many of ms. cox health risks during this pregnancy will put her life in danger if left untreated. >> reporter: the state argued she needed more evidence. >> the plaintiffs have not shown they will suffer immediate and irreparable injuries. >> reporter: but the judge siding with kate saying the longer ms. cox stays pregnant, the greater risk to her life. it's unclear if the state will try to fight this ruling but

♪ >> reporter: george, it has been four months since the fires. in that time so much hope has come pouring into maui. we wanted to find out, is it reaching those who need it most? ♪ at the ritz carlton maui, a tree lighting ceremony. 6-year-old miles and his mom sara, it's their first christmas since they lost their home, their school and their town, lahaina. >> here we are. home sweet home. >> reporter: we first met them days after the fire. they've been living in this hotel room ever since. though they're grateful -- what do you remember from last christmas? >> i remember having a tree. >> reporter: like thousands of lahaina residents displaced by the fire, they have received kokua, help, help

given freely from others. it started as clothing and supplies donated from all over hawaii. fema support for housing arrived. and then the donations poured in from all around the world. ♪ some day i wish upon a star ♪ >> reporter: on good morning america a fund-raising effort for maui, where contributions from you, our viewers, along with corporate gifts totalled more than $7 million. the hawaii foundation was the largest recipient of the funds. the funds still growing. a $5 million donation from mackenzie scott takes their total to a whopping $163 million. >> close to i'd say a little over 95% of those funds came from people around the world. primarily in the continental united states. >> reporter: they're now focusing efforts on recovery an rebuilding. other funds like the peoples fund, started by oprah winfrey and dwayne johnson, continued to
