to get guns off the streets of san francisco. plus, a big rig causes a big mess on a bay area highway with lanes shut down for several hours. abc7 news starts now. building a better bay area moving forward, finding solutions. >> this is abc7 news. >> a pleasant hill man involved in a police standoff that spanned two days is now in custody. he surrendered early this morning. now there are questions about how police handled the emergency. hi everybody. thanks so much for joining us. i'm diane lynn. and immediately, new details. police say the former pittsburgh police officer and marine shot his wife on thursday night and kept officers at bay for hours. abc7 news reporter suzanne fawn tells us the police chief is under scrutiny now for ordering officers to leave the scene before that standoff ended on saturday afternoon. police were still on scene at this home on cleopatra drive. hours after 40

year old chungliang chow turned himself in. police say say chao fired a shotgun through a locked garage door thursday night, injuring his wife as she tried to get into their home. her injuries were not life threatening. on this saturday, the police chief had a lot of tough questions about their handling of the standoff. so the big question on many minds is why did officers leave the armed suspect barricaded alone in his home? and why did officers leave? late thursday night, we didn't completely leave. >> we had surveillance going. we had undercover. we had ready response team of patrol officers ready to go as well. >> the police chief admits the swat team did leave the scene, but he says detectives were constantly monitoring chow's social media account and felt he wasn't a threat to the general public. >> i thought it was the best way to de-escalate this situation. i also felt, and some of us felt based on our investigation, that he may have a resentment or hostility towards law enforcement. but being that he used to be law enforcer and he

may have been suffering from mental health crises, police officers returned to the home friday evening. >> the chief says. chow fired as many as 30 rounds at an armored vehicle overnight. he surrendered peacefully just before 8 a.m. saturday, about 1000 people were impacted by the standoff, according to the chief. they couldn't leave their homes or return home. >> yeah, that was very unfortunate. we regret that. >> neighbors we talked to had mixed reactions as it's hard to judge. >> judge, i think i think they know what they're doing. amy geske lives in the neighborhood. >> i want to give the police credit and think that they are doing the right thing. but it didn't feel for anyone in the neighborhood like we were being taken care of or protected. >> the chief says he made the decision to pull the swat team and officers out of the area in hopes of de-escalate the situation. >> i believe i made the right decision. having said that, it the factors changed and my decision to do that eventually, it really didn't work. and for that i'm accountable. we are

president resigned today amid criticism over her response at a house hearing into anti-semitism on campuses earlier this week. liz mcgill, along with the presidents of harvard and mit, did not explicitly say that calling for the genocide of jews would necessarily violate their school's code of conduct on bullying or harassment. instead, they explained it would depend on the circumstances and conduct. mcgill will remain a tenured faculty member at the university's law school. all right. shifting gears, let's get a check on the forecast as we take a live look outside. a lovely sunset out there. spencer says it will be another night for the heavy coat, maybe an extra blanket turn on those heat seekers. heat cedar cedars as well. >> i say that all the time. the heat cedars. yes. we'll need all of that too, to keep us warm. diana we had a cold morning this morning, as you know. no doubt know it'll be cold again tomorrow morning. and here's why. as we look at the satellite

radar composite image, big ridge of high pressure there. the dominant factor in our weather picture right now keeping skies mainly clear when skies are clear at night. of course, the radiational cooling allows temperatures to drop quite low under this time of the year especially. so we have a frost advisory that will be in effect from midnight tonight to 10 a.m. tomorrow for the north bay interior valleys, low temperatures in that region will drop down to between 32 and 35 degrees going into the mid-morning hours. so you can see that all across the board tonight. it's going to be chilly across the entire bay area, especially in our inland valleys. but the north bay valleys will be the coldest spot. so look for some frost, possibly tomorrow morning in those areas. the full forecast coming up a little bit later. >> deon. okay, sounds good. spencer thank you. someone shot and killed a security guard at a 7-eleven store in oakland. it all happened just after ten last night at the convenience store on harrison street and bay place . police say the victim tried to stop someone from stealing when

the suspect fired several shots and then drove away. there have been no arrests in this case. three students at san francisco high schools are accused of bringing guns to school yesterday. two of the students attend george washington high school in the outer richmond. one had a gun in a bag and was injured during a struggle with school staff over that bag. the second student had an air gun. the third attends galileo academy of science and technology in the russian hill neighborhood. police do not think the cases are related. no charges were filed and officers say there is no indication that the students plan to use those weapons on campus. s today. san francisco police held their annual gun buyback program. people who turned in guns received $100 and $200 for assault weapons. this was also a no questions asked event. halfway through, they collected 130 guns. >> i'm very supportive. we are very supportive of the second amendment. we believe individuals have the right to

defend themselves. but there's a lot of loose guns out there. there's a lot of households with individuals who are not trained in gun safety. and people are being hurt. kids are being murdered. we have to do something. doing something is better than doing nothing any day. >> san francisco police are still offering a free gun lock to gun owners who want one in just ahead. tumbling tires caused a traffic disaster in the bay area. take a look at this. we'll get some information about an incident that shut down lanes of i-80 for hours today. and you'll see a lot of santas stumbling around san francisco today. we'll take a look at an annual holiday celebration that is both loved and loathed but his vision dimmed with age.

avenue just before 11 this morning. a semi, as you can see here, partially loaded with tires overturned near gilman street, spilling those tires onto the freeway and blocking several lanes. it impacted traffic heading both west and east for about four hours. east bound traffic slowed to a crawl as people slow near the accident scene. and here's another look at what caused these massive backups. you see it highlighted on your left there. the truck overturned during a crash involving several other vehicles. no word, though, on any injuries. over in the north bay, a large corn spill led to some road closures in sonoma

county today. it all happened when a truck overturned along highway 116 near stage gulch road in lakeville. chp says the 53 foot long trailer flipped as the driver successfully avoided a collision with the driver who pulled out in front of him. the truck crashed into a small creek bed and also hit a p-g-and-e's power pole. this weekend. president joe biden is in california to raise money for his reelection campaign. he's holding a series of star studded fundraisers in the los angeles area. his arrival last night prompted a protest by pro-palestinian groups. they are angry with the president for supporting funding for israel. police moved in and dispersed the crowd after law enforcement say protesters threw objects at officers. police say no arrests were made and no one was hurt. saw a lot of santas coming into

work today. a different kind of fundraiser in san francisco's union square. these are scenes from the annual citywide pub crawl known as santacon. the event brings large crowds of people dressed as santa and his elves into the city while they support their local bars, their generosity can be as free flowing as the spirits. participants are asked to bring unwrapped toys to donate to the san francisco fire department toy drive coming up, savoring a san francisco original all what could possibly be the world's last anchor steam kegs are being tapped today at a local bar and every sip is in support of keeping anchor steam brewing. we'll check out the event next. plus, taking a live look outside a chilly night on tap. abc7 news weather anchor spencer christian joins us with your forecast and he'll let you know how long these cooler temperatures will stick around. >> ahead in sports, christmas comes early for one california baseball team shohei the money

into the pacific northwest. so those rainfall systems are north of us and we can expect dry weather for quite some time. we have calm conditions as well. wind speeds right now at the surface are generally under ten miles per hour. so we don't have a wind chill effect, but we have a chill right now as we look out over the sea. that's ocean beach looking down to ocean beach from mount tam, 57 degrees in san francisco. and in san mateo, oakland, 58, 61 at hayward, 60 in san jose, 55 at half moon bay. blue sky, mainly over the golden gate. right now. pretty chilly up in the north bay, except santa rosa, which is the mildest location at 60 degrees, but it's only 52 at petaluma, 56 at napa. we've got 57 at fairfield and livermore. concord at 58 degrees. and this is a look at our forecast headlines. it's going to be frosty in the north bay valleys tonight. tomorrow we'll have a mix of sun and high clouds, maybe not quite so sunny as today, but still a

bright sky tomorrow and mainly sunny weather is in store for most of next week and it's going to be a bit milder for now as we i said that already didn't move along. i forgot to hit the now we move along to the frost advisory, which will be in effect for the interior valleys of the north bay from 10:00 tonight to midnight tonight until 10:00 tomorrow morning. i'm just getting used to reading our new graphics, which look pretty good, but now i can read them even better. midnight tonight, 10 a.m. tomorrow, temperatures will drop down to a range of about 32 to 35 degrees in those interior valleys and frost. bear in mind, can kill tender plants. so overnight lows across the board will generally be in the chilly range, about 40 around the bay shoreline and down into the south bay, mid to upper 30s in the inland east bay and of course the chilliest weather up in the north bay where we have the frost advisory in effect forecast animation shows some breaks in the clouds that will move through tonight. so enough clearing will occur during the overnight hours for those temperatures to drop down

to that frosty level and then starting tomorrow morning, we'll have a mix of some sun and high clouds. highs tomorrow will be right around 60, 62 degrees near the bay shoreline. inland east bay. some locations will not even hit 60 degrees. we're talking highs of 58 at antioch and concord and maybe 60 at napa. and san rafael, 63 at santa rosa. and here is the accuweather seven day forecast. so sunny, you're in a bit milder on monday with some mid 60s as our highs near the inland areas and right right around the bay shoreline excuse me on tuesday and wednesday, still pretty mild, not quite so mild as monday toward the end of the week, increasing clouds and getting milder for now. >> abc7 sports with chris alvarez. >> giants fans have a new dodger debut for the next decade. shohei ohtani is headed to hollywood signing a historic ten year $700 million contract post the news on instagram with a simple a la dodgers logo. while most of ohtani's money will be deferred, the contract the
