anger and frustration from friends and long time customers in oakland. a 711 security guard allegedly steps in to stop a thief and it costs him his life. and now the neighbors are demanding answers. good evening

and thank you for joining us. i'm dion lim. more than 48 hours later and tonight, oakland police emailed us saying they still have no information on whoever shot and killed the security guard. opd says it happened friday night inside the location on harrison street towards grand avenue on the north end of lake merritt. abc seven news reporter j.r stone got new details in oakland today and joins us live with that story. j.r >> dion there is a lot of frustration among community members tonight. not only due to this crime but this is a store that has surveillance video but no suspect description whatsoever has been released by oakland police. flowers left outside of this 7-eleven to remember the security guard who oakland police say is fatally shot, trying to stop a would be shoplifter. >> all dude was a good dude like man. he was just friendly with everybody. he talked to everybody. and you know, like he looked out for the store. >> investigators say the guard

was attempting to stop someone from stealing items inside the store and the person pulled a gun and shot him. the 7-eleven at harrison and 27th is in sight of the diocese of oakland across the street from whole foods and blocks away from lake merritt. >> it just sucks, man, because it's just like it happened right here. so i live up the street. so when i heard about it, it was really kind of disappointed about it. >> we spoke with those who would often see the security guard in the store. they say while he was friendly, he also wouldn't stand for theft. so you think whoever stole or was trying to steal something, it wasn't the first time you think that somebody came back? >> yeah, there was. there was more to it. a lot more to it. i guarantee it. because that's just. just to random. i mean, it's kill for no reason over some skittles. >> i spoke with a friend of the security guard who told me that his buddy would often step in and stop people from stealing items at this 7-eleven. that friend told us off camera that the security guard's life had been threatened at least one time. this marks the second time

looking back over the years for san francisco, oakland and san jose. you'll find it on the front page of abc seven news.com new developments tonight in the north bay in response to recent violent incidents at schools. the santa rosa city school district is bringing police back on campuses, at least temporarily. in a statement tonight, school officials say each high school will have one officer on campus for the next two weeks. each middle school will have check ins from officers. in march, you may remember a student was stabbed and killed during an altercation at montgomery high school. since then, there has been a large debate over bringing police officers back on campus, as the school board will discuss a more permanent plan at its meeting on wednesday. now to the charged debates happening on america's college campuses and most prestigious universities. there is mounting pressure tonight after testimony on capitol hill went viral over anti-semitism on campus. >> does calling for the genocide

of jews violate harvard's rules of bullying and harassment? yes or no for the president of the university of pennsylvania has now stepped down after that moment last week, liz mcgill testified, saying calls for the genocide of jews didn't explicitly violate the school's bullying and harassment policy. >> president mcgill's inaction fuels what has been happening, but she's just adding thing, i would say, fuel to the fire. >> now, the presidents of harvard and mit are also facing backlash for not doing enough to prevent hate on campus. >> the answer is yes. that calling for the genocide of jews via daetz harvard code of conduct. >> but again, it depends on the context. >> donors are now withdrawing massive donations, blaming the schools stance on combating anti-semitism. the department of education is now investigating six more schools for discrimination in large crowds

>> in san jose, ryan curry, abc seven news. >> all right, time to track the weather. we are still feeling that chill, though, spencer, in that video we saw some folks with short sleeves. maybe because they were dancing and singing. >> well, the chill has diminished a little bit. dion where we had freezing and frosty weather the last couple of mornings tomorrow morning, it'll be a little chilly, that's all. here's a look at our day planner for tomorrow. 7:00 tomorrow morning, there'll be lots of lingering clouds which will develop during the overnight hours. skies will be relatively bright, but still some lingering clouds. temperatures upper 40s on the coastline. but as you move around the bay, you'll see only mid 40s and some inland areas will be in the upper 30s. still at 7 a.m. then by 9 a.m, we'll see partial clearing by noon. much sunnier skies, temperatures in a narrow range, though, about 57 to 59 degrees from coast to bay to inland. then in the late afternoon hours, about 4 p.m. or so, mainly sunny skies, temperatures will have warmed up to about 60 to 62 degrees in most locations

a courtroom tomorrow, that is until today, canceling his appearance. abc news reporter alison kosik has a look at what comes next for mr. trump. donald trump had been scheduled to testify in his own defense at his civil fraud trial on monday. >> he will open himself up to whatever they want because he's not afraid. people that are afraid cower. president trump doesn't cower. >> but on sunday, trump abruptly canceled his plans to testify, making the announced on his social media platform, truth social. the former president citing the testimony of his expert witness. the use of his ironclad disclaimer clause and alleged bias by the judge overseeing the case as reasons he no longer plans to testify. trump, his sons eric and don jr along with other trump organization executives, have been accused of engaging in a decades long scheme using fraud and misrepresentation to inflate trump's net worth to receive

more favorable loan terms. the former president has denied any wrongdoing. this is a case that should have never been brought. >> this is a witch hunt. this is election interference at a level that has never seen before. >> new york attorney general letitia james responding to the change in plans in a statement saying we have already proven that he committed years of financial fraud and unjustly enriched himself and his family, adding, trump cannot distract from reality in the trial. while the trial now set to resume on tuesday with the cross-examination of defense accounting expert eli bartov. once his testimony concludes, it's expected the defense will rest. the attorney general's office plans to present a brief rebuttal case which could finish the same day. closing arguments are scheduled for january 11th and a written decision in the case could come from the judge in late january. alison kosik, abc news new york. meantime

president biden will be hosting ukrainian president vladimir zelensky at the white house on tuesday. congress is in a bitter debate over providing ukraine as well as israel with billions in additional military aid. the white house says aid is a prime 8-80 and has urged congress to act swiftly. but senate republican eyes are increasingly skeptical over spending towards ukraine, saying major immigration changes must be part of any funding deal. well, across the bay area, the holiday season was marked with shows of generosity. here's a look now at the sights and sounds from three different communities making lives a little brighter and helping build a better bay area packages from santa and local organizations clutched in the hands of 300 kids in chinatown sunday. they aren't the only gifts. they're receiving this holiday season. many of these children live in sros or single resident occupancy units, which are often just 100ft■!s thanks o

>> christmas in the park took on a whole new meaning. this accessible sunday. some exhibits cater to kids with special needs to make this an inclusive holiday experience. the visually impaired could interact with displays and a sensory santa caters to kids who want quiet time or don't want to be touched . jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock serenading the crowd were the sounds of the new hope band, whose members all have special abilities themselves. all of these events just a taste of the holiday spirit across the bay area and in the north bay. a local rabbi hired a helicopter, of all things to fly out and drop gold gelt over their hanukkah festival. you have to see this. this was in petaluma earlier tonight, last year, the rabbi had drones fly over the festival grounds carrying a giant menorah. but he says the faa wouldn't let him do it again. so what do you do naturally? get a helicopter instead? yeah aside from that, the chabad of

petaluma had what it claims to be the world's largest dreidel plus games, crafts a live dj and led fire performance. i mean, that is extreme, but i mean very impressive. that's a celebration. >> that is a holiday celebration . i love it. >> i have many questions. you know, where does how much does one rent a helicopter for? i don't know. >> but apparently we're happy they did this time. >> what a celebration made the event. >> yeah, it did. and a nice night for riding in a helicopter or just watching one fly about because we've got mainly clear skies. here's a look at our satellite radar composite image. we have high clouds that'll be moving through the bay area sky during the overnight hours. but still the skies will be mainly clear for most of the night. as you can see, high pressure is the dominant feature in our weather right now, deflecting weather disturbances to our north. so we've got a string of dry days coming our way right now, the wind is calm all across the bay area, barely more than 2 or 3mph in places where the wind is even measurable. looking out over san francisco right now from right now from sutro tower,

we see it's 50 degrees in san francisco, 43 in oakland, we have mid to upper 40s at hayward, san jose, san mateo and 43 at half moon bay. beautiful view from emeryville camera again. skies are mainly clear at the moment, although although we expect clouds to increase overnight. we have upper 30s right now in santa rosa, petaluma and napa. 36 at fairfield, concord, 40 degrees and 39 at livermore. and these are our forecast headlines. we've got the thermometer there because it'll be seasonably chilly inland overnight, but it's not shaking that thermometer as it was the last couple of mornings when we had freezing and frosty conditions on. we go to tomorrow sunny with high clouds and the week ahead will bring us mainly sunny days and milder weather. all the way through the upcoming week. here's our forecast animation for the next day or two, starting at midnight tonight. notice mainly clear skies early with clouds increasing in the morning hours. then those clouds will part giving way to mainly clear skies tomorrow evening. and the mainly clear weather will stay with us all the way through tuesday. and tuesday night. so overnight low

temperatures will range from about 44 at half moon bay to mainly low 40s around the bay shoreline. inland areas will drop into the upper 30s in some spots like napa, 39, concord 39, livermore 37. many of these locations had lows near freezing over the last couple of nights and then highs tomorrow. the well on the coast low 60s 61.5. moon bay 62 here in san francisco, 62 will be a popular number tomorrow as temperature readings all around the bay shoreline will be right around 62 degrees. the inland east bay may reach some mid 60s, 64 and livermore up in the north bay, look for 66 at santa rosa down in the south bay. san jose will warm up to 66 degrees. and here is the accuweather seven day forecast. and notice how mild it's going to be even though temperatures will drop a couple of degrees on wednesday and thursday. generally we're looking at low to mid 60s as the daytime highs both inland and around the bay shoreline right on through the weekend into the weekend, sunday, though, next sunday, we'll see clouds increasing just a bit with a chance of rain. at the moment,

and strong winds continue to pound portions of at least a dozen eastern states. this evening. and there is snow still to come. a reported 26 tornadoes touched down in parts of alabama, mississippi, kentucky and tennessee, where thousands remain in the dark due to power outages. a total of six people were killed in tennessee. one tornado even carried 150 mile an hour winds, leaving an 18 mile trail of destruction. >> right now, we're just trying to be with all those people who have lost so much, just trying to work with all those first responders and volunteers and being here in a military community, volunteers is no shortage. the storms are expected to continue to make their way up through the northeast, potentially threatening up to 50 million people with damaging winds and severe flooding. >> developing news, an entire country is in the darkness. kenya is facing a nationwide power blackout. it is the third to happen there in just three

months. and last month, it took about 12 hours to restore power in most parts. its generators failed to kick in at two different airports, leaving them non-operational. the state run utility, kenya power, blames it on a system disturbance that technicians are working on. the monopoly company has long been accused of poor service and driving up electricity costs. now to a potential breakthrough in breast cancer treatments. a san jose company has released positive new data in its first trials of new breast cancer vaccine. a nixa bio sciences has been in partnership with the renowned cleveland clinic, which has been researching the topic for decades. of the 16 women who took the vaccine in 2021, each participant reported no negative side effects and no resurgence of their cancer so far. the hope is for one day the vaccine to be given to any women who want to prevent breast cancer before it even forms a heads up. if you

are out holiday shopping. police in one bay area city just found a new type of scam targeting people who are buying gift cards . and now the warning is spreading nationwide. abc7 news reporter lena howland shows us why it can be easy for shoppers to miss when the person buys the card. >> they have a barcode that is visible on the outside of the envelope. this is what scanned at the register. >> pinole police are taking to social media posting this video warning shoppers of the latest gift card scam after at least one person fell victim to it at a local drugstore. >> we got a call of a community member that was trying to return a gift card or try to get their money back on a gift card because they found that it was cut. so one of our sergeants responded to that call and realized, oh, this is a scam that we've been seeing. and now we're seeing it for the first time. so police are trying to stop it. >> somebody was taking all these cards from the store without paying for them and without loading them up, taking them home. >> and what they do is they heat
