security guard who oakland police say is fatally shot trying to stop a would be shopper after lg was a good dude like man, he was just friendly with everybody. >> he talked to everybody, you know, like he looked out for the store. >> investigators say the guard was attempting to stop someone from stealing items inside the store and the person pulled a gun and shot him. the 7-eleven at harrison and 27th is inside of the diocese of oakland, across the street from whole foods and blocks away from lake merritt. it just sucks, man, because it's just like it happened right here. >> so i live up the street. so when i heard about it, it was really kind of disappointed about it. >> you spoke with those who would often see the security guard in the store. they say while he was friendly, he also wouldn't stand for theft. so you think whoever stole or was trying to steal something? it wasn't the first time you think that somebody came back. >> yeah, there was. there was more to it. a lot more to it. i guarantee it because that's just just too random. i mean, it's for no reason. over some

statistics, tactics and tools. looking back over the years for san francisco, oakland and san jose. you can find it on the front page of abc seven news.com. now to breaking news right now out of san francisco. a large fire burning in the city's panhandle neighborhood. it broke out overnight near masonic avenue and grove street. and that's where we find abc seven news reporter lena howland , who has an update from fire officials. lena i'm at the intersection of grove and masonic, where we're keeping an eye on a three alarm fire. >> now, moments ago, i talked to a spokesperson for the san francisco fire department who tells me that two people were injured. one of which jumped out of a window from one of the burning buildings and two people were injured. 120 firefighters are on scene right now. you're taking a look at some video taken from the scene about an hour and a half ago, right around when this fire first started, right around 330 this morning. yeah this we believe

this happened on the 700 block of masonic. multiple buildings were evacuated with a partial floor collapse. we do know one person was rescued and transport to a local area hospital after jumping out of a window. a second person was also transported to the hospital. we did talk to a neighbor who was evacuated to of the surrounding homes to the home that was on fire, had to be evacuated. here is what one of those neighbors had to say that was around three something a m and i heard all the fire trucks going and i just woke up, grabbed all my stuff and just came outside and the house a couple doors down was fully, fully engulfed in flames. >> i haven't seen any active flames since we have been out here on scene this morning since about 445. >> fire officials with the san francisco fire department tell me that the fire does appear to be out at this hour. and right

now they are just going through the process of mopping up some hotspots and making sure everything is out now, right now, they could not give us an accurate number of the total number of people that have been displaced. they're working to connect with all of those folks right now. and we are also working to talk to some of those folks as well. so for now, reporting live in san francisco, lena howland, abc seven news. >> lena, thank you. in the north bay police will be back on the campuses of some santa rosa city schools starting today. this is in response to recent violent incidents at the schools in a statement last night, school officials say that each high school will have one officer on campus for the next two weeks. each middle school will have check ins from officers. in march, a student was stabbed and killed during an altercation at montgomery high school. since then, there's been a debate over whether or not police officers should go back to campus. the school board will discuss a more permanent plan at its meeting on wednesday. >> happening today, a federal jury is expected to begin deliberations in a lawsuit that

could change the way android users pay for content. epic games. the makers of fortnite claims google's play store is an illegal monopoly. epic wants to be able to direct people to other payment services, circumventing google's fees. google argues the fees are necessary to provide support on its platform. the ceos of both google's parent company, alphabet and epic, met last week to discuss a possible settlement, but they were not able to reach an agreement this morning. >> a deadly storm system that tore across parts of the south over the weekend is now triggering flood alerts in much of the northeast. gloria, at least six deaths are being blamed on these storms. that's right, reggie. >> those deaths are all in tennessee and they include two children. a mother and son died when the storm hit their mobile home. at least 26 tornadoes were reported across the region on saturday. and sunday with winds of up to 150mph. louisville says the tornado approached his home in clarksville, tennessee, as he was putting his son into a car seat. >> look up in the sky and the

entire sky across the street is just spinning and i'm looking at it and the wind is picking up. i can see the debris starting to fly. i pulled my son out as fast as i could. we ran inside and my two sons and my wife and i, we jumped in the bathroom and then we just started praying to jesus . >> more than 360 homes and buildings are badly damaged or destroyed. and in the northeast this morning, up to six inches of rain and strong winds are expected from new york city to boston. and that could bring flooding to many areas. kumasi >> thank you, gloria. in the east bay pleasant hill, police face questions over how they handled a standoff situation. that incident lasted two days with officers leaving and returning a day later. police say a former pittsburgh officer and marine shot his wife at a home on thursday. officers and swat teams went to the home that night, but eventually left before making any kind of arrest. they returned to the scene on friday and the suspect

fired up to 30 shots at an armored car. he eventually surrendered saturday morning. the police chief said he made the decision to pull officers from that scene thursday, hoping it would de-escalate the situation. he said they were still running surveillance on the home in case anything happened and also said he didn't think the man was a threat to the public. the man's wife was treated and released and is expected to make a full recovery . >> new details on the murder of a man at crissy field in san francisco last month. court documents obtained by our media partner, sf standard say the accused killer did it because the victim was upset that she was transgender. according to the documents, the victim hired the suspect for sex work. when the man found out the suspect was trans, he demanded his money back. that's when the suspect said she felt disrespected and uncomfortable and shot the man in the head. she told authorities she called her mother to help dispose of the body. >> issues around crime and

safety continue to dominate public debate in oakland, city leaders opened up the discussion with residents on saturday with a community safety forum. they say since the launch of several initiatives this summer, like bringing in the chp and foot patrol officers, east oakland's crime corridors have seen a 40% reduction in crime. there's also a new public safety task force that will launch in january. it will work with other cities and counties to share strategies to technology and data to tackle crime. >> that means that we need to lean into coordinated services to make sure that we are not focusing on duplicated services and we are being very focused on addressing the equity gaps that exist. >> city council member trevor reed also spoke about a new policy to ensure equitable delivery of services. that means parts of the city most in need of services will get them first. >> 511 this morning, we'll take you outside our exploratorium camera this morning showing you it's a clear picture. we are

starting out with mainly clear skies and some very chilly temperatures into the 30s. and our coldest spots. so here's how it breaks down. first along the coast, we'll have temperatures in the 40s right now peaking pretty close to 60 degrees in the afternoon with a blend of sun and clouds dipping back down into the low 50 as we head into early tomorrow morning. now around the bay shoreline, it's a bit warmer, but we're also starting out with cooler temperatures in the lower 40s right now, we'll peak into the low 60s later on this afternoon, but we do expect after midnight tonight, a bit of that fog is going to redevelop around the bay shoreline. i don't expect it to be too dense, but we will find those stars sharing our sky with some low level cloud cover first thing tomorrow morning. now, inland, a little bit warmer, but also a little bit cooler to start out the day. look at this. we're starting out in the mid 30s in some of our coldest spots inland will top out in the low 60s by 2 p.m. with mostly sunny skies on the horizon. take a look at the three day forecast. let's break down what's going to happen over the next 72 hours. bright sunshine today, milder than

company has released positive new data in its first trials of a new breast cancer vaccine in san jose based nixa biosciences has been in partnership with the renowned cleveland clinic, which has been researching this topic for decades now. of the 16 women who took the vaccine in 2021, each participant reported no negative side effects and no resurgence of the cancer so far. the hope is one day this vaccine can be given to any woman who wants to prevent breast cancer

news. >> in the north bay a local rabbi hired a helicopter to fly out and drop gold gelt over the first hanukkah festival. this was in petaluma last night. last year the rabbi had drones fly over the festival grounds carrying a giant menorah. but he says the faa wouldn't let him do that again. so he used a helicopter instead. aside from that, the abbot of petaluma had what it claims to be the world's biggest dreidel. plus games, crafts a live dj and led fire performance. part of building a better bay area includes highlighting the creative things business owners are doing to woo in customers this holiday season . >> in san francisco, that includes a new approach to getting you in the door in cow hollow. that includes things like free champagne, eggnog and great discounts. nearly 30 local businesses in the area are hanging festive balloons since nailing their part of this neighborhood's first ever union street holiday stroll.

it's a mostly sunny afternoon. by 4 p.m, we'll have those temperatures in low and mid 60s across the region. that's a look at your forecast. let's see what you got on the roads with gloria. good morning. >> good morning, druid. it's starting to get a little bit busier out there on the roads this morning. you can get a live look right here at our 680 camera in walnut creek and you could see a little bit more vehicles out there, but no major delays. so that is the good news right now. and then taking a look at our drive times. so far, everything is in the yellow except actually, i should say, everything is on the green except right here. tracy to dublin. that will take you 46 minutes. so a little bit of a slowdown right now. reggie >> thanks, gloria. we continue to track breaking news out of san francisco's panhandle neighborhood. you might be smelling smoke if you live in the city this morning because of a large fire that has forced people out of their homes. it broke out overnight near grove street and masonic avenue. more than 100 firefighters showed up. abc seven news reporter lena howland is there and did speak with fire officials about a half hour ago. what are they saying,

lena? >> hey, reggie. i'm at the intersection of grove and masonic, where firefighters told me that the fire is out right now, but their crews are staying on scene just to mop up some hotspots. as you can see right here behind me, just in the past hour, we did learn from fire officials that two people were injured in this fire and taken to the hospital, including one person who jumped from the third story of the home that was on fire. that person has moderate injuries. let's go now to some video of the flames taken shortly after this fire started right around 330 this morning. it was bumped to a three alarm fire, bringing in 120 firefighters to the scene. a spokesperson for the fire department says the home had partial floor, had a partial floor collapse during the fire. the two surrounding homes to the one that caught fire also sustained some serious water and smoke damage. they were evacuated as well in the middle of the night. here's what that fire official had to say about the damage. >> there was one person located

in the back of the building that possibly had jumped out of the building from the third floor, or they have been transported to the hospital. and another person, which might have been in the same house was also transported as well. so we have two fire victims at this time. there are multiple people displaced. i don't have an exact number right now, but the neighbor homes on the each side of the building are evacuated and both have extensive fire damage. there was a partial floor collapse in the fire building due to heavy fire burning through the floor itself . >> firefighters said they were able to knock this fire down in just about an hour. it's still unclear how many people have been displaced from this fire, but the red cross is on scene working with those family is right now. and the cause of this fire is still under investigation at this hour. live in san francisco, lena howland,

>> we're learning more about the strong odor coming from the chevron refinery over the weekend. inspectors from the bay area air quality management district issued a violation after a friday inspection when, according to reports, chevron un staff told inspectors they experienced an upset at their bioreactor which caused the burnt tires odor inspectors have been patrolling the point richmond area throughout the weekend. late last month, the air district issued violation notices to chevron because of flaring from the refinery in san francisco. >> it could be the end of an era. the city's buzz werks brewery is finishing off what could likely be the end of anchor steam kegs. the brewery's beer bust is a way to celebrate the former business during the holidays. anchor steam annual christmas brew was their most popular release before the beloved brewery went under. apparently, it's still just as popular, expecting at least 500 people today. >> that was the rsvp and if
