>> please drive carefully because you might encounter some fog on your morning commute. drew is here to tell you how thick it's going to be and when we might see it. >> good morning. it is tuesday, december 12th. >> i'm going to start the check of that forecast with you. good morning. >> so we do have those areas of fog. the north bay, the east bay, the areas that see the thickest fog currently. here's the tam cam, our marine layer. it has certainly returned this morning. so we are dealing with low visibility in spots. the north bay right now. you can see a big area dealing with excuse me, a quarter to a half of a mile visibility. but that's not the only area. some of the bay shoreline, especially the east bay hayward down at two and a half miles this morning. but as you move inland, it's not too bad. so that fog is with us this morning. not nearly as chilly right now as we were about 24 hours ago. we're mainly in the upper 40s to the lower 50s. here's how your day shapes up. future weather showing you by about 1030. a lot of this fog is going to break apart. so it does stick around for big chunk of our morning as we head into the

afternoon. we do expect a lot of sunshine to come back out. mild temperatures once again. most of us going back into the low and mid 60s. and later on tonight, some patchy fog excuse me, in the south bay, but not nearly as widespread as what we're dealing with right now. let's look at your forecast. let's see. you're on the roads with gloria. good morning. good morning, drew. >> well, you mentioned the fog. that is the big thing this morning to look out for. if you are driving today. we're getting a live look outside right now on our san mateo bridge. cameron heyward camera. and you can see it is pretty foggy out there this morning. now, there is no fog advisory for this bridge. however chp has issued a fog advisory for the golden gate bridge and also the bay bridge. so be careful out there on the roads today, kumasi. >> thank you, gloria. a horrible stench in the air around richmond has prompted an emergency meeting tonight to address air quality concerns. abc seven news reporter lena howland in the newsroom. with the issues that happened before the smell and what community members want to happen after tonight's meeting. >> lena kumasi people living in richmond not only want answers, but they want some

accountability for the smell. that has really been difficult for the community to deal with. it started with several flaring events at the local chevron refinery just two weeks ago. then last week, a petroleum smell near chevron as well as a heavy stench coming from the city's wastewater treatment plant. the cause elevated levels of hydrogen sulfide, which mayor eduardo martinez called unbearable and he says residents have been reporting headaches and breathing issues since monday afternoon. we hope to have a lot of the public there so that the veolia executives can actually hear testimony as to what their company is doing to the richmond community. the city's wastewater treatment plant, veolia says the hydrogen sulfide smell was caused by work being done to replace a fan and to drain a tank at their plant in a statement, they say in part, we will review our processes with the city to ensure that the city has as much notice as possible of any future work that could create odor

exposure and will continue to implement measures to mitigate odors at the wastewater plant. the special emergency meeting over the state of the city's air quality will be held tonight at 5:00. it's happening at richmond's community service building. live in the newsroom, lena howland, abc seven news. >> lena, thank you. after a three year absence, police officers are back on some santa rosa city school district campuses today. so parents, students and the school board will discuss plans to bring them back permanently. it's because of safety concerns at schools. the concerns first came to light in march when a student was killed in a stabbing at montgomery high school. since then, a growing number of parents have wanted officers back on campus. we have seen in the last few weeks some incidents that resonate with the march 1st tragedy that happened at montgomery high school. >> and so with that, it feels like it's getting worse. and for us, we need to do something now. >> we first told you about the

temporary plan yesterday morning. one officer will be at every high school each day until winter break and there are routine officer check ins at middle schools. officers were removed from santa rosa schools in 2020 as part of an effort to confront racial bias in the criminal justice system. >> the red cross is helping people displaced by a fast moving fire that destroyed a san francisco home. if you were with us watching abc7 mornings yesterday you saw a live coverage of that fire at burned near grove street and masonic in the panhandle district. a total of seven people have been displaced. this is video from that fire. officials say it caused the homes floor to partially collapse and one person had to jump from a window to get out. it's not clear what started this fire, but investigators say the home was under construction. >> when we're getting more information about san jose's 47th traffic death of 2023, it happened friday evening on almaden expressway near camden avenue. police now say a teenager was driving the car that hit a man crossing the

street. the victim was not in a crosswalk. he died at the hospital. the teenager stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators at this time last year, 61 people had been killed in crashes in san jose, san jose police are out with a new plan to improve public safety and build trust in 2024. >> has five focuses promoting public safety, partnering with a diverse community, creating a more diverse workforce base, improving service and adding more staff. the department says it's dedicated to providing public safety through community partnerships and ensuring equity for all. it added that it's, quote, committed to treating all of san jose's diverse community members with dignity, fairness and respect while protecting their rights and providing equal protection under the law. a person has died after being hit by a car in the parking lot of a popular san francisco grocery store. >> the crash happened yesterday afternoon outside rainbow grocery on folsom street. this is in the mission police say the driver also hit several cars during the incident. one witness

explains what happened. >> and i froze for a moment. i called 911. i'm reporting. i hop out the car. they're like, is he okay? i run over to check and see if he's all right and unfortunate only it didn't seem as though he was. >> police say they are still investigating exactly what happened. and but they say drugs or alcohol don't appear to be a factor. the driver is cooperating with police. >> new developments this morning from the middle east. a yemen militant group is claiming responsibility for an attack on a norwegian ship in the red sea. the a missile hit the ship. it caused a fire. no one was killed just days ago. that militant group said it would target any ships regardless of nationality, that went to israel. there were no american ships in that area, but the uss mason responded to the call and went to help. >> this morning, special counsel jack smith is asking the supreme court to decide if donald trump has presidential immunity from prosecution in the january 6th

insurrection. the court has agreed to hear the request. gloria is at the live desk with why smith has made this highly unusual request. >> good morning. reggie smith is trying to avoid any delays to the start of the federal trial, which is set for march. a lower court has already rejected trump's claim of absolute immunity from prosecution. but trump appealed the ruling, and the appeals process could end up delaying the trial, possibly until after the 2024 presidential election. while smith admits that this is, quote , an extraordinary request, it is not unheard of. abc news chief washington correspondent jonathan karl explains. >> such a request for quick consideration and quick ruling on such a major issue is highly unusual. but it is not without precedent. back during the watergate era, of course, the court ruled and ruled in a very much expedited manner that president nixon could not use executive privilege to keep congress from getting access to

where some of the worst fog is this morning from santa rosa to novato to napa. right now we're at a half a mile visibility even around the bay shoreline. hayward mountain view right now reduced visibility. but it is the north bay that is dealing with the thickest fog this morning. dense fog advisory is in effect until 11 a.m. this morning. that does include healdsburg santa rosa, petaluma, novato, napa for that low visibility this morning. so certainly use your low beams out there with that fog and add some distance to the cars around you as it's a little bit of a slower commute thanks to the reduced visibility. here's the wider picture live doppler seven along with satellite. once we get rid of that fog, it's a really quiet afternoon. we have a lot of sunshine on the way today and mild temperatures going into the 60s. here is how the day shapes up. we have that fog early on advisory through the most of the morning. then brighter skies do prevail. it's mostly sunny later on today and those temperatures are in the upper 50s to the mid 60s. we have even warmer weather coming our way on the seven day

everywhere and just and while time going, the thing just kept kept falling down. >> the cause of this collapse is being investigated. our sister station in new york city reports poll reports showing that there have been 178 complaints to the city about this particular building in just the past two years. the most recent report included seven violations, including unsafe facade conditions in san francisco, the man arrested for the death of his 27 year old girlfriend in the presidio heights neighborhood is now charged with murder. >> 29 year old scott fisher pleaded not guilty during his arraignment yesterday. he's accused of stabbing 27 year old kimberly wong to death. authorities are calling it a deadly case of domestic abuse. >> services are here. san francisco has a lot of services, crisis lines. you can get help. 24 hours a day, even if you just want to talk. certainly legal

services to get a restraining order. and we have shelters for those who need them. so nobody is alone in san francisco or reach out for help. >> wong's body was found inside the couple's apartment on clay street on november 30th. fisher was arrested a week later in concord. >> and this was just the latest example of domestic violence turning deadly during our 3 p.m. show. getting answers. yes today we spoke with the executive director of the asian women's shelter about what leads to domestic violence. >> yes, there are sort of root causes for how this type of entitled violence happens and then there are exacerbating factors. so a lot of times people will think, oh, it's because of the alcohol or, oh, it's because of the meth, or, oh, it's because of poverty, it's because of immigration, it's because of racism. it's because of all of these things. that's why domestic violence and we don't talk about it that way. you don't choose us to commit this type of violence because something else was done to you. you choose to do this type of

this year, the sonoma glen school board voted to ban the pride flags from campus. there is also a discussion to pass a policy that would force teachers to out trans students to their parents. at later school board meetings got pretty heated with people on both sides arguing their stances. some parents, even decided to pull their children from school as a result. tonight's school board meeting is set for 530. several local groups have already announced they will be rallying before the meeting today. >> the santa clara county board of supervisors is set to vote on lobbying the federal government for cleaner airplane fuel. the vote comes as two bills make their way through congress that could force san jose's reid-hillview airport and other airports to bring back leaded aviation fuel. read hillview became the first in the nation to ban leaded fuel in 2021 after a study found elevated lead in the blood of children living nearby by. opponents of the ban have argued that some planes require leaded fuel to operate properly and that unleaded fuel

half to a quarter of a mile around the bay shoreline. we have low cloud cover. the fog not as thick. and as you move inland, it's not too bad. livermore is at ten miles right now, but a dense fog advisory is in effect for the valleys of the north bay. this will last until 11 a.m. this morning. so the fog is going to linger for a big portion of the morning after 11 a.m. the fog will lift for afternoon sunshine. once that fog lifts off, it is quiet across california, still high pressure in control and that will lead to a bright afternoon on the way later on today. temperatures not nearly as cold as we were yesterday. yesterday if you remember, a lot of us started out in the 30s this morning. most of us are starting out in the upper 40s to the lower 50s with that cloud cover. here's how your day breaks down with the day planner. we have those foggy areas still through 9 a.m. after 11 a.m. that advisory lifts in the fog, lifts as well. we'll get sunshine out there later on this afternoon. by 4 p.m. it is a mostly sunny day in those temperatures in the upper 50s to the mid 60s. we

have even warmer weather on the horizon with the seven day forecast. we'll show you that

near sequoia national park. the hiker became trapped when the thousand pound boulder crushed his leg. search and rescue teams found the man on a steep hillside and they were able to free him using a system of ropes and pulleys. they shifted the boulder. the man was then lifted by a helicopter and taken to a hospital in fresno. we don't know his condition. >> a dire warning this morning about the future of marine life. a quarter of all freshwater fish in the world are in danger of extinction. that's a wake up call and an update from the international union for conservation of nature. the iucn said the update is part of the

first comprehensive assessment of the world's freshwater fish population. but local experts say these findings don't surprise them. experts say some culprits are the warming waters from climate change changes to the natural flow of rivers along the invasive species, along with invasive species and overfishing. our estimate is that about 83% of california fish are vulnerable to extinction in some sort of way. >> so if we were to put the california number on that iucn number, it would be much, much higher. >> now, this could be a big issue for california, for salmon alone contributes more than $1 billion a year to the state's economy. me? >> i'm about to give you a lot of sports stats. the 49 ers are the first team in the nfl to clinch a playoff spot, and they can thank the giants who beat the packers last night in a game that you are watching on abc seven, the 49 ers qualify for the playoffs for the fourth time in five years. they can win

four families to a room, to a house is a crazy situation. >> and $20 an hour is nothing. it's really not even a livable wage. >> now, if this is approved, it would take effect no later than march of 2024 for businesses that have more than 25 employees. again california's minimum wage increases by $0.50 to $16 an hour starting january first. san jose's is going up to 1755. oakland's 1650. san francisco will not be changing its minimum wage in january. it will stay at 18.07. >> the glide foundation is getting ready for its annual holiday food distribution event. voluntee leaders, including some from gap, began backing up food that will be distributed tomorrow. glide will be distributing two bags this year. one includes a traditional holiday meal of a turkey and the trimmings. the other contains culturally appropriate items for the asian community. glide officials say the need is especially great this year. >> so on paper it says about 25%
