>> plus, the end of an era renovations are set to get underway very soon at the castro theater when you'll be able to catch your last show before the iconic building closes for more than a year. >> and a foggy start to your morning commute in parts of the bay area. drew and gloria here to tell us how thick it's going to be when we'll see it lift and what you need to look out for on the roadways. >> good morning. this is tuesday, december 12th. >> yes, let's start with our forecast for drew. >> yes. so we have those areas of dense fog. the north bay is getting hit the hardest right now. we'll take you to san rafael this morning. we do notice reduced visibility. this is 101. you're looking at right now. we'll flip it on over to live doppler seven and visibility mode and petaluma, napa, novato, anywhere from a quarter to a half of a mile. visibility some other areas like mountain view and san jose have reduced visibility but it's not as bad. so dense fog advisory is in effect for the valleys of the north bay. this until 11 a.m. this morning, which means the cloud cover is going to linger for much of the morning after 11 a.m. the fog really burns off. we'll get a sunny afternoon on

the way and mild temperatures will go into the upper 50s and mid 60s by about three, 4 p.m. today. that is your forecast. let's see how we're doing on the roads with gloria and this fog out there. good morning. >> yeah, well, drew, i know you mentioned it, but it is foggy out there. i know when i drove into work today, it was super foggy out there hard to see. so keep that in mind if you're driving today. we're getting a live look outside right now at our bay bridge toll plaza camera. and the chp has issued a fog advisory for the bay bridge and the golden gate bridge. metering lights flipped on here at the bay bridge toll plaza at 5:41 a.m. and you could see traffic is starting to build up there right now. now, as far as your drive times, right now, we are seeing some slowdowns, especially westbound for between antioch and hercules. that will take you 48 minutes. kumasi thank you, gloria. >> a horrible stench in the air around richmond has prompted an emergency meeting tonight to address air quality concerns. abc7 news reporter lena howland in the newsroom. with the issues that happened before the smell and what community members want to see after the meeting tonight. lena kumasi people

living in richmond not only want answers, but they want some accountability for the smell. >> that has really been difficult for the community to deal with. it started with several flaring events at the local chevron refinery just two weeks ago. then last week, a petroleum smell near chevron, as well as a heavy stench coming from the city's wastewater treatment plant. the cause elevated levels of hydrogen sulfide, which mayor eduardo martinez called unbearable and he says residents have been reporting headaches and breathing issues since last monday afternoon. >> we hope to have a lot of the public there so that the veolia executives can actually hear testimony as to what their company is doing to the richmond community. >> the city's wastewater treatment plant. veolia says the hydrogen sulfide smell was caused by work being done to replace a fan and to drain a tank at their plant. in a statement, they say in part, we

will review our processes with the city to ensure that the city has, as much notice as possible of any future work that could create odor exposure. and we will continue to implement measures to mitigate odors at the wastewater plant. the special emergency meeting over the state of the city's air quality will be held tonight at 5:00. it's happening at richmond's community service building. live in the newsroom, lena howland, abc seven news. lena thank you. >> after a three year absence, police officers are back on some santa rosa city school district campuses temporarily. tomorrow. parents, students and the school board will discuss plans to bring them back permanent. it's because of safety concerns at schools. the concerns first came to light in march when a student was killed in a stabbing at montgomery high school. since then, a growing number of parents have wanted officers back on campus. >> we have seen in the last few weeks some incidents that resonate out with the march 1st tragedy that happened at montgomery high school. and so

with that, it feels like it's getting worse. and for us, we need to do something now. >> we first told you about the temporary plan yesterday morning, one officer will be at every high school each day until winter break and there are routine officer check ins at middle schools. officers were removed from santa rosa schools in 2020 as part of an effort to confront racial bias in the criminal justice system. >> the red cross is helping people displaced by a fast moving fire that destroyed a home in san francisco. if you were with us watching abc seven mornings yesterday, you saw a live coverage of this fire. it burned near grove street and masonic in the panhandle district of the city. a total of seven people have been displaced . san francisco fire officials say this fire, you can see it here, it caused the home's floor to partially collapse. and one person had to jump from a window to get out. now, it's not clear what sparked this fire, but investigators say the home was under construction. >> we're getting more information about san jose's 47th traffic death of 2023. it

happened friday evening on almaden expressway near camden avenue. police say a teenager was driving the car that hit a man crossing the street. the victim was not in a crosswalk and he died at a hospital. the teenager stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. at this time last year, 61 people have been killed in crashes in san jose. >> san jose police are out with a new plan to improve public safety and to build trust in 2024. it has five focuses promoting public safety, partnering with the diverse community, creating a more diverse workforce, improving service and adding more staff. the department says it's dedicated to providing public safety through community partnerships and ensuring equity for all, adding that it's, quote, committed to treating all of san jose's diverse community members with dignity, fairness and respect while protecting their rights and providing equal protection under the law. >> a person has died after being hit by a car in the parking lot of a popular san francisco grocery store. the crash happened yesterday afternoon

outside rainbow grocery on folsom street in the mission. police say the driver also hit several cars during that incident. one witness recalls what happened. >> i froze for a moment. i called 911. i'm reporting. i hop out the car. they're like, is he okay? i run over to check and see if he's all right. and unfortunately, it didn't seem as though he was. >> police say they are still investing, stating exactly what happened. they say drugs or alcohol don't appear to be a factor. the driver is cooperating with police. >> new developments this morning from the middle east. yemeni militant group is claiming responsibility for an attack on a norwegian ship in the red sea. a missile hit the ship and caused a fire, but no one was killed. just days ago. that militant group said it would target any ships regardless of nationality, that went to israel. there were no american ships in the area but the uss mason did respond to that call and went in to help. >> this morning, special counsel jack smith is asking the supreme

court to decide if donald trump has presidential immunity from prosecution in the january six insurrection. the court has agreed to hear the request and glory is at the live desk to explain why this unusual request was made. >> reggie smith is trying to avoid any delays to the start of the federal trial, which is set for march. a lower court has already rejected trump's claim of absolute immunity from prosecution, but trump appealed the ruling and the appeals process could end up delaying the trial possibly until after for the 2024 presidential election. while smith admits this is, quote, an extraordinary request, it is not unheard of. abc news chief washington correspondent jonathan karl explains why such a request for quick consideration and quick ruling on such a major issue is highly unusual. >> but it is not without precedent. back during the watergate era, of course, the court ruled and ruled in a very much expedited manner that president nixon could not use

executive privilege to keep congress from getting access to his oval office tapes. >> trump continued to be the clear front runner for the 2024 republican presidential nomination. more new polls show him leading president biden in a hypothetical match up in key battleground state. s. the supreme court has given trump's team until wednesday of next week to respond and to jacques smith's request. kumasi. >> thank you, gloria. happening today, president biden is meeting with ukrainian president zelensky at the white house. zelensky will also speak with congressional leaders. he and biden want congress to approve another $61 billion in military funding for ukraine, which would be part of a $110 billion package with funding for israel as well, and an interview with the associated press. zelensky said he's worried the israel-hamas war will take attention away from the struggle in ukraine. yesterday president biden argued for americans to stand behind the jewish community during a hanukkah event because a surge of

building partially collapsed onto the street. you got to see this video of it, a six story building. it had 47 residential units, six businesses, emergency crews were seen digging through this rubble for hours yesterday, looking for anyone who could be buried there. officials say two people had minor injuries during the evacuation process, but incredible no one was killed. >> it came from the top first and it just started falling down everywhere. and there's an old while time going. the things just kept kept falling down. >> the cause of this collapse is being investigated. our sister station in new york city has pulled reports showing there have been 178 complaint to the city about this building in just the past two years. the most recent report included seven violations actions, including unsafe facade conditions in san

francisco. >> the man arrested for the death of his 27 year old girlfriend in the presidio heights neighborhood is now charged with murder. the 29 year old scott fisher pleaded not guilty during his arraignment yesterday. he's accused of stabbing 27 year old kimberly wong to death. authorities are calling it a deadly case of domestic abuse. >> services are here. san francisco has a lot of services. crisis lines. you can get help 24 hours a day, even if you just want to talk. certainly legal services to get a restraining order. and we have shelters for those who need them. so nobody is alone in san francisco. reach out for help. >> wong's body was found inside the couple's apartment on clay street on november 30th. fisher was arrested a week later in concord. >> this was just the latest example of domestic violence turning deadly during our 3 p.m. show. >> getting answers. yesterday, we spoke with the executive director of the asian women's shelter about what leads to domestic violence. >> yes, there are sort of root causes for how this type of

are traveling later on this morning from burbank to orange county to lax, we have no delays on the board. just be aware of that. okay here's a look at the headlines this morning. we have areas of dense fog. that advisory will linger until 11 a.m. that means that fog is going to take its time lifting. we won't break out sunshine until after 11 a.m. this morning, but the afternoon is going to be very nice. sunny skies later today. mild temperatures in the upper 50s to the mid 60s and then later this week, especially friday and saturday, we are warming up. we have a chance for some records by saturday. some of us may be flirting with 70 degree warmth. today, though, it's all about that dense morning fog lifting after 11 a.m. for sunny skies. those temperatures going into the upper 50s and low 60s along the coast, low and mid 60s around the bay shoreline. so we are a few degrees above average for this time of year. tonight, the fog does not look to be as widespread. we'll watch the south bay where we could see some patchy fog developing. but for the most part it's mainly clear night and temperatures

heated with people on both sides arguing their stances. some parents, even decided to pull kids from school as a result. tonight's school board meeting is set for 530. several local groups have already announced they will rally before the meeting. new at six. the plan for a massive floating pool on san francisco's waterfront is moving forward. the goal is to revitalize piers 30 and 32, according to the chronicle, the entitlement process for the redevelopment of the two aging piers is expected to kick off with a public hearing next month . so here's a look at what developers are hoping to build. it includes water front housing and that giant floating swimming pool. the newspaper says developers are still facing a big funding gap of about $125 million. they have a meeting scheduled for january with the port commission to talk about next steps. also new at six, wnba star brittney griner is set to tell her story a year after being freed from detention in russia. according to our sister network espn, griner is working

is in the newsroom with what's causing the smell and what residents are asking from officials. lena. reggie it's a smell. >> richmond mayor eduardo martinez is calling unbearable and he says residents have been frantically reporting headaches and breathing issues since last monday afternoon. it started with several flaring events at the local chevron refinery just two weeks ago. then last week, a petroleum smell near chevron, as well as a heavy stench coming from the city's wastewater treatment plant. the cause elevated levels of hydrogen sulfide. nathan trivers owns a local pub in the point richmond area and says this isn't the first time strange odors have impacted those who live and work nearby. >> we always would love for them to be conscious of the local community around there to do what they can do. but you know, stuff happens. >> the city's wastewater treatment plant, veolia says the hydrogen sulfide smell was caused by work being done to

replace a fan and to drain a tank at their plant. that's why the city of richmond will be holding a special emergency meeting over the state of the city's air quality. it's happening at 5:00 tonight at richmond community service building off of civic center plaza. representatives from veolia, the company that runs the city's wastewater treatment plant, will also be there to give a presentation session on the issue. live in the newsroom, lena howland, abc seven news. thank you, lena. >> if it seems like there have been more atm thefts in san francisco this year, you're right about that. police say there has been a spike in 2023 and we have seen the aftermath of that. broken machines boarded up windows at local businesses is. but this isn't just a san francisco issue. according to the atm, securing association. atm thefts are up across the state and in fact, california has the most atm thefts of any state in the country with more than more than 100 incidents. this year. >> crime, gangs who are
