ally. we begin with the new move by republicans to investigate president biden. >> the house voted last night along party lines to approve a formal impeachment inquiry into president biden. on the same day, the president's son, hunter , defied a subpoena from congress. >> so what's next in this investigation? seven abc's justin finch begins our coverage now from washington. justin. good morning. >> rhiannon. good morning. republicans are now intense defying their investigation into the president and his family. >> the resolution is adopted. >> house republicans have now unanimously approved a formal impeachment inquiry into president biden as they look into whether the president improperly benefited from foreign business dealings involving his son, hunter. >> i have been the target of the unrelenting trump attack machine shouting where's hunter? well, here's my answer. i am here before yesterday's house vote, hunter defied a congressional subpoena, saying he's willing to

testify, but only in public, out of concern. >> a private deposition could be selectively leaked or manipulated. >> there's no evidence to support the allegations that my father was financially involved in my business because it did not happen. >> now, republicans are hanging on to those words. finally involved. >> that is a huge departure from everything they have said. now for the last three and a half years, as the white house has maintained, the president was never in business with his son and president biden has said he never spoke to his son about his foreign business dealings. >> judiciary committee chairman jim jordan claims the words hunter used yesterday indicate a shift. >> first, it was no involvement, then no, i never, never talked to anyone. and then we find out about the dinners, the meetings, the phone calls and everything else. >> republicans have failed to show any evidence implicating president biden in any wrongdoing. they say they need the impeachment inquiry to find the evidence, saying it will

allow them to better enforce subpoenas in court. critics claim it's all a political stunt . >> it's all about power and truth, and justice really has no role in what they're doing. if you have evidence that joe biden, not hunter biden, but that joe biden broke the law, bring it forward. and if it's impeachable, impeach them. but you don't have that evidence. >> as for hunter biden, the house will likely vote to hold him in contempt for defying that subpoena, but it would be up to the biden justice department to decide on whether to prosecute andrew. all right. >> justin, thank you. the supreme court has agreed to hear a challenge that could affect the prosecution of former president trump and hundreds of defendants in the january 6th attack on the capitol. they were all charged under a federal law that makes it a crime to obstruct an official proceeding. as abc terry moran reports, defense attorneys say the law was meant to deal with witness tampering and should not be applied to these cases. >> republicans have been making this case for months, some of

them arguing that the justice department should now prosecute liberal protesters who disrupted official proceedings in tennessee and new york city earlier this year. and two of the four charges that trump faces in this case are based on that loss of the courts move is a big win for him. >> in the meantime, trump's election interference trial could be delayed as he appeals, claiming presidential immunity now to the war in the middle east and new questions about whether the biden administration is pushing israel to change course. >> this morning, the white house appears to be playing down president biden's harshest criticism yet of israel since the war broke out. >> he was expressing concerns that that that we continue to see civilian casualties in gaza at a fundraiser, the president said israel is losing international support because of its indiscriminate bombing in gaza. >> a white house spokesman would not confirm whether biden's remark is an official assessment. if so, it could have

significant implications. >> as i said to my previous answer there, that they will act in accordance with the law of armed conflict and do everything that they can to match their intent, which is to minimize civilian casualties. >> if they aren't, then isn't there an obligation for the u.s. to change the way that it's delivering military aid? >> that's a hypothetical that i'm not prepared to engage in right now. >> if he's saying indiscriminate bombing, that's a hypothetical. >> i'm not going to engage in. we have expressed our concerns. the president has publicly and privately with the israelis about the need to reduce civilian casualties, and will can continue to do that today, u.s. national security adviser jake sullivan is meeting with israel's prime minister to push for restraint and for more humanitarian aid and more than 18,000 people have been killed in gaza, according to the hamas run health ministry. >> an estimated 85% of the population has been displaced. encampments like this one flooded by a recent storm

>> this morning, a world renowned fertility doctor who founded one of the nation's first fertility clinics stands accused of secretly using his own sperme to impregnate a patient more than 40 years ago. >> that was its own, uh, its own shock. >> carolyn bester, now 42, said she made the discovery when she used a home genealogy kit and found some of her relatives were also relatives of her mother's fertility doctor, merle berger. bester's mother says she is shocked and now she's suing. >> we never dreamt we would have. he would abuse his position of trust and perpetrate this extreme violence. >> one day, poyen says she and her husband saw doctor berger for fertility services in massachusetts in 1980, and he promised to use the sperme of an anonymous medical resident who resembled her husband. but the suit claims berger instead used his own sperme and her daughter was born in 1981. >> it's hard to imagine not

trusting your own doctor. >> doctor berger launched a boston ivf in 1986, which has grown into the country's largest infertility treatment center, with clinics in six states. he retired in 2020. berger denies the accusations, his lawyer saying the allegations, which have changed repeatedly in the six months since the plaintiff's attorney first contacted doctor berger, have no legal or factual merit and will be disproven in court. meanwhile dupuy's daughter says she's devastated >> and i know who my real family is. that will never change, but i will always struggle with what doctor berger did to my mom and to us. >> boston ivf says this case predates its founding, but it says many more safety measures are in place today compared to 1980, a time before sperme banks were established. andrew rhiannon, andrea. >> thank you. the supreme court will hear a dispute over the abortion pill mifepristone. the biden administration is asking the justices to overturn an
