get on the road if you need to go to work. this morning. >> thank you gloria. developing news this morning oakland police are trying to find the people who destroyed the city's largest menorah by throwing it into lake merritt. abc seven news reporter lena howland joining us live in the newsroom with the investigation and how the community came together in support. lena. carmen tsay with no arrests made, oakland police are looking for anyone with information about the vandalism to come forward. >> despite this, many in oakland's jewish community came together last night to rally, replace and relight oakland's largest menorah. the relighting ceremony was positive, uplifting and peaceful in the same place where the old menorah once stood and before the lighting, a car parade where vehicle after vehicle could be seen with menorah on top of them, showing signs of support and unity among both the jewish community and others. but this happened less than 24 hours

after oakland police say someone destroyed the original one on the sixth night of hanukkah and threw its parts into the lake. some here even referenced the arabic graffiti left in the area . that translates to free palestine. >> i read the message that they left at the place where they destroyed menorah. here it's a death set. it's nothing else but a death threat. and we should not take it lightly. >> too many people have been attacked and targeted and hurt and harmed because of who they are, where they're from, who they love, how they pray. and that is wrong. >> speakers at the menorah lighting included california attorney general rob bonta, who said that hate crimes have become all too common in california. the arab resource and organizing center put out a statement saying there can be no question that the destruction of a symbol of jewish identity on a jewish holiday is in intolerable act of anti semitism and must be condemned. police have not released any suspect information

at this time. if you know anything about who may have been involved, you're asked to call oakland police right away. live in the newsroom lena howland abc seven news. >> thanks, lena. stanford and ucla have been added to a federal investigation into anti-semitism and islamophobia on college campuses. the university has joined a growing list of schools that include harvard, columbia and cornell. investigators are looking into at least 20 incidents on campuses since hamas attacked israel in early october. >> police in san jose say they've identified suspects in two incidents where pro gaza banners were torn down from freeway overpasses. now they are pursuing hate crime charges against both. the most recent incident happened sunday. the council on islamic, american, islamic relations shared this video from the park avenue overpass above i-880. the video shows a man in a heated argument, and moments later he pulls out a knife and cuts down two banners. he can also be heard calling the person with the camera a terrorist. >> national security adviser

jake sullivan is in israel this morning meeting with officials as calls for a humanitarian cease fire between israel and hamas grow. gloria. this meeting comes days after president biden warned israel to change their course or risk losing international support for reggie. >> the meetings today between sullivan and israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu and his war cabinet could be tense. sullivan will urge netanyahu to show restraint in the war with hamas and discuss another potential cease fire and getting more hostages released. the meeting comes as the white house is being questioned about president biden's recent criticism of israel at a fundraiser, he said israel is losing internal support because of its indiscriminate bombing in gaza. national security council spokesperson john kirby would not confirm whether biden's remark is an official assessment. if so, though, it could have significant implications. >> owens, as i said to my previous answer there that they will act in accordance with the law of armed conflict and do

we are facilitating, the bombs that we are providing power. last month, more than 700 staffers and political appointees signed a letter urging the president to support a cease fire. we're getting a price tag on what it cost san francisco to host last month's apex summit, a report says. more than $11 million are spent on overtime pay, and the bulk of that was for the police department. the mayor's office says the federal government and california highway patrol will be picking up their own overtime costs. san francisco did pay for chp officers, hotel rooms. the city received about $20 million in private donations, which should help to offset some of those costs. san francisco is facing an $800 million budget deficit over the next two years, and now mayor london breed is asking city departments to prepare proposals to cut spending by 10. she's also asked department heads to outline an additional 5% in cuts in case they're needed. the proposals are due by february. mayor breed's office will then crunch the numbers before she presents her budget to the board of

investigating the destruction of the city's largest menorah as a hate crime. hundreds in oakland are now showing their support for the jewish community. abc seven news reporter lena howland joins us live in the newsroom with how people are coming together. lena. >> reggie, last night we witnessed the hope of the local jewish community prevailed despite the city's largest menorah being destroyed and thrown into lake merritt on the sixth night of hanukkah. the mood of the relighting ceremony was positive, uplifting and peaceful. it was relit in the same place where the old menorah once stood, and before the lighting, a car parade where vehicle after vehicle could be seen with menorahs on top of them, showing signs of support and unity among both the jewish community and others. >> when i heard the news this morning, i cried. um, i felt very hurt, sad, scared. >> it is clear that the hatred that has been allowed to spread unchecked across universal city campuses and city halls has now

festered in oakland to levels that we could not have expected. >> oakland mayor shengtao called this an attack on the entire city, and her office says this menorah is a long standing tradition for oakland. police have not released any suspect information at this time. if you know anything about who may have been involved, you are asked to call oakland police, right away. live in the newsroom lena howland, abc seven news. >> thank you. lena. the man convicted in the attack on speaker emerita nancy pelosi's husband will be sentenced in that federal case in april. the attack on paul pelosi happened in the couple's san francisco home last year. 42 year old david depape was convicted of one count of assault on the immediate family member of a federal official and a second count of attempted kidnaping of a federal official. he, still facing a trial on state charges. that trial is set to start january 12th. >> new developments hundreds of people turned out for last night's santa rosa city school board meeting. as the district

begins discussions that could bring police officers back on campuses permanently. that meeting went long until midnight , although no big decision was made at the end for much of the evening, school board members heard from teachers, parents and students, many calling for increased security on campuses. following a series of recent violent incidents. >> we're angry that we've asked this board for help over and over and over and over again. our students are confused, frustrated, and worried, and a thousand other things they want reassurance. they want to know the adults are taking them seriously. >> the meeting had more than 80 public comments. montgomery high students said their survey indicates that they do want officers to return to campus. trustees passed a motion to continue the conversation about school officers with city partners. we currently do not know what an sro program tool may look like. >> we do not know what that tool may cost, but i do believe that it is a collective responsibility to collaborate.

>> police officers were removed from campuses in 2020 following the murder of george floyd. that was part of the conversation to confront racial bias in the criminal justice system. >> san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins is facing some pushback following comments she made about the unhoused during our abc seven town hall event last week. >> so i think the recourse is obviously outside of the criminal justice system. but is it? it is. i mean, the criminal justice system is just say, no, i'm camping here. well, no, they have to be made to be uncomfortable. all is the truth of the matter. we cannot make it comfortable for them to pitch a tent on our sidewalks and stay. >> abc seven news insider phil matier spoke with the da's office yesterday about the comment, and got more of an explanation. >> with 50 to 60% of the people on any given night saying no to shelter. what do we do to somebody that just decides they want to pitch a tent? and she was very clear there wasn't something criminally that she could do. it wasn't going to

charge them. that wasn't going to be it. but she said, you know, we can make them feel uncomfortable and that upset some people because they said, well, what makes you think it's comfortable to be on the street to begin with? but her point i spoke with her, her staff today is that we can't just be compliant with it. and while she's concentrating now, much of her strength on going after the bigger dealers in the drug war on drugs right now that are selling openly. we also have a lot of users in those tents. >> mayor london breed echoed jenkins comment. when we spoke with her earlier this week. >> abc seven news spent an hour with san francisco's mayor, police chief and d.a. to tackle the city's chronic issues. as you can see, i was part of that conversation. the commercial free show is now streaming online. you can find it on demand on the abc7 bay area app. >> former san francisco giants star buster posey raised a controversial point as to why shohei ohtani might have chosen the dodgers instead of the giants. he said in an interview with the athletic that the

city's drug and crime issues are just some of the concerns that come up for top free agents. we spoke with the journalist who wrote that article. >> he spoke really from the heart that, uh, you know, there are perceptions out there that may outstrip reality for what's going on in the city and for what? uh, um, you know, the vibrancy of the city. and he really wanted to try to correct that as best he could, uh, correct those perceptions. and help people understand. look, this is an amazing place to play . this is an amazing fan base to play in front of. >> ohtani has not publicly expressed any concerns about the city, but posey, a member of the giants ownership group, said there was some reservation with the state of the city, pedestrian safety improvements are coming to san jose thanks to nearly $13 million in federal grant money. >> mayor matt mehan made the announcement along with the family of kyle leblanc. a tow truck hit and killed leblanc in a bike lane during his senior year of high school. the money will go toward building better bike lanes at intersections and

upgrading sidewalks and traffic signals. >> we still have a long way to go to make our streets safer for everyone, and this federal support will enable us to save more lives in the years ahead. >> there have been 39 deadly crashes in san jose this year. 23 involved a pedestrian in the only good news from that is that the numbers are down compared to last year. >> an icon in the wine industry, mike gergich, has passed away. gergich was a pioneer in the wine making business. his chateau montelena chardonnay beat french wines in a blind tasting in 1976, and that helped to turn napa valley into one of the world's premier wine regions. he was also an integral supporter of the north bay nonprofit roots of peace. from the very start, the group removes landmines worldwide, putting vines and other crops in their place. this picture is gergich with roots of peace founder heidi kuhn standing above him. gergich credited his longevity to his friends and to

a glass of wine a day. he was 100 years old, developing news on capitol hill, house republicans have formalized their impeachment inquiry into president biden. >> gloria. the party line vote came just hours after the president's son, hunter, refused a call to testify and made a rare public comment about the impeachment effort. >> reggie. house republicans claim the president has abused his power and the business connections of his son, hunter. both president biden and hunter biden have denounced the impeachment inquiry. hunter biden speaking yesterday ahead of that vote. but to suggest that his grounds for an impeachment inquiry is beyond the absurd. >> it's shameless. there is no evidence to support the allegations that my father was financially involved in my business because it did not happen. >> the impeachment inquiry has already been going on for a year since former house speaker kevin mccarthy authorized it without a vote. the vote yesterday was along party lines. republican

>> here's a live look at santa cruz this morning. we're pointed at the pier. great visibility. we are going to deal with a lot of sunshine today. your accuweather headlines will show you filtered sunshine. that's what we're calling your thursday . just expect a really pleasant afternoon. it's even warmer here friday and saturday. by saturday we could have some records possible because we will be going into the 70s and some of our warmest spots and then sunday it's a lot cooler. it's a lot cloudier and wetter weather comes back and that wet pattern sets up for much of next week as well. today though, it's dry. it's pleasant. we have mostly sunny skies, good visibility right now. we'll have temperatures going into the 60s for the afternoon. that is above average for this time of year. overnight tonight, we're not expecting any widespread fog. we will have high clouds and temperatures in the 30s and in the 40s. take a look at future tracker temperatures tomorrow afternoon. look at some of our locations, especially san mateo, san jose, fremont, mountain view, going into the 70, some 10 to 15 degrees above average. a lot of upper 60s on the board will likely repeat this temperature forecast again on
