partridge in a pear tree or anything else. the better business bureau has the 12 scams to watch out for. if america loves chinese food, why did only one single chinese restaurant in the us get a michelin star in the last year? our media partner, the san francisco standard, profiles the san francisco restaurant with that coveted star. but first bay area sports teams facing serious challenges from the giants losing shohei ohtani to warrior star draymond green being benched indefinitely. you are watching getting answers. thank you so much for joining us. i'm kristen sze tis the season to be jolly. but while the 40 niners may be feeling that festive spirit, the warriors and the giants not so much right now, each facing some major challenges. the warriors are trying to figure out their defense after losing draymond green. the league suspends him indefinitely. yesterday after his second suspension in one month. it stems from this incident with the phenix suns center, for which draymond was ejected. and here to talk about
3:02 pm
the warriors and draymond's future and a surprising new reason given for the giants not winning the shohei ohtani sweepstakes, may be uh- is abc7 sports director larry beil. larry, by the way, shohei ohtani's introduction is happening right now. >> let's let's see if we can check it out from our friends in los angeles. there he is. and obviously the giants went all in on their bid. this is according to farhan zaidi, their director of baseball operations, who said it was really a matter of geography for shohei that he, you know, with the angels lived in southern california like southern california and preferred to stay there. i think there's a lot more than that nonstop flight to japan to visit. >> well, yeah. >> but i mean, he's got private planes. he can do whatever he wants. he's going to make a fortune and a lot of his contract is deferred. but, you know, the question is, where do the giants go from here? because this is a pattern already. i mean we're going to talk about patterns like draymond green and lots of big stars that we've gone for aaron judge yeah yeah. no i mean it's it happens seemingly every year bryce
3:03 pm
harper giancarlo stanton last year they signed carlos correa then didn't bring him in because he failed the physical. but you know the dodgers are obviously loaded. they'll spend as much money $700 million most of it deferred. and now the question is yoshinobu yamamoto is another japanese pitcher who will be coming to major league baseball. and shohei is recruiting him to the dodgers. the giants want him as well. a lot of a lot of teams want him because he could be the next great ace. >> he's going to want to possibly be where ohtani is, right? that's a great recruitment tool. >> two schools of thought one. yes, you know, the two japanese players on the same team and or i've also heard that yamamoto he wants to be the man in his city. he doesn't want to be like shohei. little brother who's helping out. i see, you know, by by throwing no hitters. yeah. so you know, we can listen in for a second here. >> i really only want to hear when ohtani is speaking. is he going to speak? he's going to speak.
3:04 pm
>> i imagine he'll speak. but you know he usually doesn't speak a lot in english. i mean, most of the time he has a translator. so i don't know what you know the situation. >> no, actually. can we talk about why? um you know, there are a lot of reasons given for why we didn't get ohtani, by the way. it hurts me to see him in that blue tie and orange tie, but, um, i you know, we heard this week from buster posey, right? that and we hadn't heard this before that maybe had to do with some of the challenges the city is going through in terms of creating a feeling of safety for the players and their wives. didn't he say something about that? >> yeah, he talked with andrew baggarly from the athletic, and buster expressed some concerns about the status of the city and how that could questioning with free agents factors into some of their decisions. now, it should be pointed out, i talked to andrew baggarly last night and he said this was not like a big soap box issue for buster. in fact, buster didn't bring it up at all in the conference call that they had with the rest of the media. but andrew took the step to text him beyond that and say, hey, i want to get more thoughts on the whole situation
3:05 pm
here. and that's the conversation that took place. here's the thing. if you're recruiting me or i'm recruiting you for however many hours it's going to be, and we tour the ballpark and we do all the things, is there going to be a conversation about what's going on in the city? of course. but it's probably ten minutes out of four hours. it's not the driving force keeping people away. these are players signing hundreds of millions of dollars. you know, these deals are gargantuan. they don't have the same problems you and i have. they're going to have gated communities. they're going to have private schools. they could do i mean, steph curry seems to be doing just fine here, you know. and he's got a whole family. and you know , although he had a stranger come into his atherton home and yeah. >> and there are players who live in san francisco or ex-players like you know hunter pence who are in the city, walk around the city, scooter around the city. um, no doubt this is not something mayor london breed or any of the city officials who are dealing with the challenges that we're seeing. want to hear here that that could be one tiny factor amongst all the other ones out there. it's pressure.
3:06 pm
>> it's pressure. it is. but you know, to me, the bottom line is and i said this last night, the overwhelming issues when it comes to free agent recruitment are one is money, two is money which we match, three is more money. the dodgers didn't know they did they. yeah. they claimed that he just won the you know wanted to be in southern california for four. is can i win a world series with your team. and i think that's where the giants have a problem, because we're going to be ten years removed from their last championship in 2014, when the next season starts. they have not done enough to show that they can be competitive year in and year out. for somebody like ohtani to go, oh, i want to be with you guys because i know i'm going to be in the playoffs every year. that i think that's a bigger problem for the giants than anything else. >> all right. well, speaking of the playoffs and winning championships, it seemed for a while it seemed like that's all the warriors did was win championships. but this season of course, we're struggling. and now the draymond situation being benched indefinitely is not going to help. >> no clearly not i know we have some soundbites that are edited by mike dunleavy jr. the warriors general manager. he
3:07 pm
spoke today and he said despite the situation they are 100% behind draymond green. and we also heard from joe dumars, who's a former detroit piston from, you know, the bad boy days. and he certainly got into his share of tussles. he now handles discipline for the nba. so he he talked. so we have some of these sound bites here. let's just roll them and we'll react. >> everybody saw the news yesterday with draymond being suspended indefinitely i think it's time that we worked with the league. his representation. draymond just to kind of talk through and figure out. and we think it's the right solution right now i think everybody obviously wants definite answers and length and all that stuff. but i think for what's best for us and draymond and everybody is um, you know, we help him with the appropriate amount of assistance and then we judge and base it on his comeback. depending on you know when the right time is. so it's indefinite truly means indefinitely. >> a lot of times people get caught up into like a number like what's the number? what?
3:08 pm
and we didn't want to do that. uh what we wanted to do was, first of all, we knew that, um, there would be some level of punishment, but we didn't want that to be the focus. we wanted the focus to be on. how can we help draymond so it sounds like anger management classes is something along those lines. >> but i don't know how you judge complete of a course. and what's the return to play i mean what does he have to do to beyond completing a course? i don't know what you would outline in this case. >> and how do you prove that the lessons been learned or that some sort of change has happened in your behavior until you get back on the court, right, and are tested in those situations and, you know, every other team that plays the warriors will try to poke the bear and poke the bear and poke the bear. >> let's see if we can get let's see if we can get him to flip out again. and so that's going to be something else that draymond has to deal with. and you know i don't i don't think there was really any intent i
3:09 pm
actually believe his excuse even though it seems kind of a reach when you look at the force with which he hit nurkic. but i don't think he intended to do any serious damage or anything. he said he was trying to sell a foul call and he was flailing backwards and lost his balance. you know believe it or not the problem is you have a long list of offenses. and he's a repeat offender. and even the last time just a month ago when he had rudy gobert in the chokehold, you know, they told him you're getting five games. and this is partly because of your history. so every other infraction that takes place is going to add an add and add an add. >> so and this goes back years. >> yeah yeah. we're talking i mean you can go all the way back to 2016. and you know the walking over lebron the whole thing or lebron walking over him. and then he smacks lebron okay. >> so what to do beyond the what it takes to restore him to the court. because he is a key defensive player. he's got a long terme contract with the warriors. uh what can the team do. >> you're just gonna have to wait it out. i mean, i talked to one of the warriors last night,
3:10 pm
a former teammate of draymond's, and i was like, explain that. what is going on with this dude? and he said, you know, i don't know the particulars of this situation, but all i can tell you is, as a former teammate, i would play alongside draymond green every, every single day. if you gave me that option. they love him. no i mean because of his his basketball knowledge. he's like a savant. where so he's going to be in the basketball hall of fame i mean he's defensive player of the year. yeah. but you know we have these situations still his former teammates and current teammates will say we need him. we want him. and so now it's up to draymond to do whatever it takes to get back on the court. >> all right. well i know you're going to keep watching that. so larry thanks for yeah. um doing this thanks for coming in early to play host at our holiday party. >> yeah yeah we can we'll post some pictures of that online. i think, uh, yeah. >> that's why he came in early and then i drafted him. >> yes, yes, yes. >> all right. i'll give you 50

today with a list of naughty behavior they're seeing joining us live now to share that list with us and tips on spotting them. the wbz ama von ama thanks for joining us. >> likewise. thank you for having me, kristen. nice to see you again. >> great to see you. so the holiday season, unfortunately, we also see the grinches. they try to steal your cash or personal information. but is it
3:14 pm
really prevalent? yes unfortunately you know, i don't like doing this special time of year. >> we don't want to scare people with this. 12 scams of christmas. but you know, these scams could be avoided if we just take a couple of simple precautions and you know, shop smart shop safe throughout this holiday season. you know, some of us started shopping earlier last month, but now we're going to go above and beyond just shopping and really talk about the 12 scams of christmas that the better business bureau compiled with our 2023. i was about to say 24 nine list. >> they are very interesting. so let's go ahead and show those to our viewers. the 12 scams of christmas. here are four of them. now walk us through these so the first one that we see on the screen is misleading social media ads a lot of the scams that we see reported are scam tracker report. >> when we're looking into online shopping, about 76% of them start on social media. so a lot of the times when we're
3:15 pm
scrolling through our accounts, our profiles, we see, you know, products that were interested in or, you know, maybe we're not, but we see that they look intriguing and we click on them and then we are led into a website that may or may not be accurate. the products that they're selling sometimes we never get or most of the time what they're really interested in is that personal information, when we're providing payment, you know, keep in mind we're providing banking information and credit card information. our name and our address, which is very sensitive information that we should be protecting at all times. so misleading social media ads is the top of our list because year over year, with online shopping becoming more and more popular, unfortunately, this is one of the scams that you know, regardless of the time of year, will always be on one of our top three. next >> go ahead. hey all my let's pick up the pace just a little bit because there are 12 after all. and our time is limited. what are social media gift exchange scams? >> these are the sister scams where you basically their
3:16 pm
pyramid schemes where if you buy one book and there's 30 of you entering this, this gift exchange, you'll end up basically with 36 gifts, 30 gifts, just so you know, these are pyramid schemes and they may or may not work. but now keep in mind that these people now have your personal information. so you definitely want to make sure that, yeah, you know, be safe when you're on social media. and you see these especially on facebook. holiday apps is another one. these tend to be more popular with kids. so you want to make sure that you're taking time and looking at the privacy policy of anything that you're downloading on your phone, especially for your kids, for fake texts are also really important, especially if you're buying things and you receive text messages where they're pretending to be amazon for example, best buy in these large retailers understand what you're buying. look at the delivery date and make sure that you know exactly who's delivering your product, whether it's ups, amazon or the us postal service. okay. >> and then look for scams. free gift cards, have temp holiday jobs look alike websites, fake charities, um, free gift cards.
3:17 pm
what's wrong with that? >> the word free. obviously that's attractive to all of us, but make sure that you understand exactly what you have to do to receive those free gift cards. if you again have to provide free information or information about anything, or you have to provide a payment up front in order to receive something, then at that point it's not free. so make sure that if you are, you know, you get these ads or it's enticing to get a free gift card of any thing, make sure that one you're not providing personal information and two,you technically are not paying to receive. this gift card. temporary holiday jobs is another one that unfortunately, we do see. some of us are looking for extra income this time of year. a lot of these jobs, if they're basically sounding too good to be true, be cautious. if they're promising, you know, to make 2000 $3,000 weekly by basically doing nothing. those are red flags. if they're asking for money up front to receive a job or to get a job, you know, again, that's another red flag. you don't have to pay anywhere to basically
3:18 pm
work. yes >> and the next one, unfortunately, because it's a tough job market, right? a lot of people have lost their jobs. so people are taking advantage. so i think we know what look alike websites and fake charities are. i want to bring up our next screen for more scams. walk us through these real quickly. >> so you have fake shopping notifications or shipping notifications. these are really important. yes so you receive an email and you click on the tracking number, the cta basically provides fake information about a product that one sometimes you didn't buy or two you bought the product from a fake website that provided a fake shipping label that again wants you to verify your credit card information and your name and that's where the scam comes in. advent calendars is a new one that we haven't seen before. that's one of the things that we've seen now is that there's advent calendars for everything. so make sure that if you're buying an advent calendar from someone on social media that you see an ad, verify that it actually is a company that exists, take the time to do your research and see if there's any
3:19 pm
complaints, or if there's any customer reviews, whether it's on b-b-b. org or going to google and just doing a simple search. again, there's about 60 advent calendars that are super popular this time of year that you can take a look at, and then the top holiday wish items. these are items that are in high demand. most of the times they tend to be luxury items and toys is a lot of the toys that we've seen this year that are super popular are are the paw patrol headphones. i believe are one of them, and anything that had to do with the barbie movie. so if you want to make sure that these items that are in high demand and if they're sold out, you know, be sure and be cautious that you don't find them on fake websites or they're expensive or sometimes on the opposite side, they're too cheap and it sounds too good to be true. then that's when it comes in. and last but not least, we have puppy scams. now i hate this one personally because i'm a dog lover, but puppy scams year's over year has always been one of our top scams throughout the year, but even more now, a lot of us want to
3:20 pm
get a puppy for christmas. but make sure that you are looking at the website and you're checking out the breeder and you know that you know the puppy that you're buying. if it's a certain breed, understand the breed and the cost. a lot of times you're paying for an expensive puppy and they want you to be spending more and more money, whether it's via payment app or direct transfers. those are red flags. when they're asking for more and more money to receive this. >> galvan great tips on the 12 scams of christmas. you can always go to b-b-b. org for more information on. thank you. thank you, merry christmas, merry christmas. does chinese food have an image problem? our media partner, the san francisco standard, explores why only one chinese restaurant was awarded a michelin star this
3:23 pm
a company that puts out that elite guide of best restaurants. our media partner, the san francisco standard, has a new article out america loves chinese restaurants, but michelin gave just one a star for its in san francisco. joining us live now is standard reporter han lee, who researched and wrote the story. hey, han. hi, kristin. so michelin gave out. i think, what, over 230 stars this year? only one went to a chinese restaurant. which is it? >> yeah. so yes. michelin star in america to give like 200 restaurants their stars. right? but there was only one is listed as chinese restaurants right here in san francisco's chinatown. it's mr. juice and mr. juice. >> got what? how many stars? one, 2 or 3. >> just one. just one. >> okay. and what is the cuisine like? what makes it elevated and michelin worthy? yeah >> so mr. zhou is a fine dining restaurant in chinatown, and it's kind leader, a chinese contemporary chinese american
3:24 pm
food. so it's not like traditional authentic chinese cuisine. it's a little bit modern, you know, with a twist advancing the cuisine. >> okay, so let's talk about that is a twist. now necessary? are there stereotypes and perceptions attached to chinese food that make kind of the cuisine struggle when it comes to michelin? >> yeah, that's a really good question. so when we talk about chinese food in america, right, we might have some stereotype, right? you know, it's affordable. it comes with big portion with those, you know, white to go box. right. that's the stereotype. but mr. zhou is trying to elevate this cuisine and make it, you know, fancy here upscale and into the fine dining world. and that's uh- make it easier to win a star or fit in michelin. the required part of winning a star. >> yeah. well, you know, there are others, right? highly acclaimed chinese restaurant, eight tables in chinatown, operated by chef george chen, who also runs china live. he gets a lot of accolades but yet hasn't gotten a michelin star.
3:25 pm
what does george think about that? >> yeah, so george is one of the most outspoken chef here, right. thinking about michelin might be a biased against chinese cuisine, but mission didn't respond to me of you know why they they think a table um, hasn't hasn't been able to get a star. so we are still waiting for maybe he can give me some, uh, explanation in the future. >> all right, well, in the meantime, have you looked at other asian cuisines like japanese? korean? others? do they tend to do better with michelin? >> yes. so, um, uh, this year in america, i think about 49 japanese restaurants get michelin star and korean food, which is very trendy right now. they also have 13 restaurants getting michelin star. >> that is so interesting. and of course, chinese cuisine is so diverse. it's uh, i think there's so many different types. and i wonder if some of it is just not understanding. >> yeah. so yeah, that's a very good question. so i think yes, chinese cuisine is very diverse,
3:26 pm
but they're not fully transplanted into us. and also i think in the us maybe a lot of you know, general public, they don't want to pay expensive price to chinese food. right. that makes a lot of, you know, chinese restaurant tours. they don't want to open fine dining restaurants as well. >> i mean, you know, this is kind of sad. but at the same time, i do know right now a lot of restaurateurs are giving up the chase for michelin, um, saying it is no longer relevant or worth it. um, do you get the sense that this is something that's still important to chefs? >> yeah, i think yeah. michelin is controversial sometimes because it's considered a very eurocentric or japanese centric, but it's still one of the most prestigious, you know, food recommendation guide. and it will bring, you know, good business, bring good staff, right. so it is still a very important guide in the restaurant world. i think this is true. >> and then when you have any event like apac, right, they all want to go to the michelin
3:27 pm
restaurants. um, and then you get more recognition. so let me ask you, what are some of the suggestions from chefs that you talked with in terms of how chinese cuisine could gain more of a footing here with michelin in the future? yeah >> so, you know, chinese cuisine back in china is very diverse, very sophisticated. right. so one of the chef, they recommend, you know, if you want to win michelin starred in america, cooking chinese food. right. you better go to china and learn the best of the best of all those regional cuisine and bring it back. right. and also, it might take a generation effort to really uplift china cuisine, you know, change the stereotype of it. and there will be more chinese fine dining places in, you know, not only san francisco but also in america. yeah, there's fang too. >> fang is doing some creative stuff. you know what i think, hanh? i think i'm offering free advice. they should reduce the portion size and up the prices. there you go. hello, michelin. >> yeah. all right. >> i know you always find the

best places, han, so i'm just going to go where you go. thank you so much. thank you. all right. you can check out han's article and see more of the san francisco standard's other original reporting on their website, sf standard.com. we'll take a short break you should feel that, like, right back here. oh, yeah, i felt that! good, that is so much better than last week. thanks, i've been doing 'em every night while i'm watching tv. - oh, what are you watching? it's a mystery. high quality care that meets you where you are.
