it's hitting new records. we're gonna break that down just ahead. but we will begin with the major storm sweeping through the country. our sam champion is here with the track and timing starting with severe weather in florida. >> good morning, everyone. we've been kind of forecasting this storm all week. now the track and timing has really come together, and it's not great news. i can show you what's been going on early before this cranks up in florida. major winds yesterday about 40 mile per hour steady winds and gusts. look what it did to the surf there. this gets worse. let me show you where the storm is. it's deep in the gulf, a little off where we expected it to be. it now starts cranking. look at the rain and even severe storms going across florida. orlando, vero beach, fort meyers, you're all in the possibility of damaging wind. then that flood threat into south florida. these storms could even go into south florida. careful, everybody. let's do the timing. we'll start with saturday when the severe weather gets across the state of florida. by the time we get into sunday, look who is getting heavy rain. this is close to atlanta.

we're tapping just about every major airport on the east coast with this storm. you know what that means. it could slow down planes getting to other locations. this could be some travel trouble. by monday, we're impacting every new jersey new york area airport into connecticut and into boston as well. how much rain are we talking with this storm? there are some places 4 to 6 inches. i think the keys could hit 8. look as you get closer to new york. we're getting 3 to 4 inches of rain. a general 2 to 3 on the eastern seaboard. it's that gusty wind as well. if we're impacting east coast airports and the hubs, it could be some trouble for almost everyone in the country. george? >> sam, fair warning. now to the arrest of suspected terrorists who were plotting attacks on jewish sites in europe. several said to be high level members of hamas. chief justice correspondent pierre thomas is tracking the story from washington. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: good morning. u.s. officials remain on high alert after police overseas arrested seven suspected hamas supporters for allegedly

planning attacks in europe, in denmark three suspected supporters of hamas taken into custody as part of a joint investigation with israel intelligence accused of plotting revenge attacks because of the war in israel and gaza. as police search for four of the suspects the danish prime minister calling it symbolic of an extremely serious situation, saying it was completely unacceptable for someone to bring the conflict in israel to denmark. and in berlin, three people arrested along with another in the netherlands for allegedly plotting to target jewish institutions. it is not just europe on high alert. u.s. officials say it is the most concerning terrorist environment since 9/11. fbi director wray telling me at a recent press conference, this is not a time for panic, but vigilance, and people should make no mistake that we are in a more dangerous time than we've been in for awhile. deborah? >> important information, pierre. thank you. the latest on the war. president biden is urging israel to be more careful about civilian casualties as the white

house is advising israel to scale back the offensive in gaza. foreign correspondent britt clennett is on the scene in israel. good morning, britt. >> reporter: good morning, deborah. national security adviser jake sullivan here in tel aviv this morning saying the fight against hamas could take months, and israel has no long-term plans to occupy gaza. this morning amid growing public disagreement between the u.s. and israel about gaza's post war future. high stakes meetings with national security adviser jake sullivan in the region. now a senior u.s. official says they believe both sides are in broad agreement that the future of gaza should be palestinian land, palestinian led in a manner that is not a threat to israel and that israel is not a threat to them. though any specifics of what that future might look like for gaza remain unclear. today gaza looks like this. drone video in rapha, meant to be the latest refuge for gazans

capturing the after math of an air strike. palestinians standing atop the rubble, searching for survivors. 18,700 people have been killed in the gaza strip according to hamas run local authorities. and now a u.s. official confirming to abc news that nearly half air to ground munitions used have been unguided so called dumb bombs. experts say their precision can be boosted by being dropped from lower altitudes which a pentagon official said israel is doing. just hours ago i pressed jake sullivan about the increasingly dire situation in gaza. does the right to self-defend justify the level of human suffering we are seeing in gaza right now? >> israel has the right to go after hamas in these difficult circumstances, and also has the responsibility to do so in a way that comports with our values, with international humanitarian law and with the strategic

necessity to see the fundamental difference between innocent palestinian people and these evil terrorists of hamas. >> reporter: overnight the idf saying the bodies of three more hostages have been found in gaza including a 28-year-old who was taken from the music festival on october 7th. more than 130 hostages remain in gaza. george? >> thanks. race for the white house now. the battle for new hampshire. primary just five weeks away. nikki haley is getting a lift from a major endorsement by the state's governor. chief washington correspondent jon karl sat down with them. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, george. donald trump remains the clear front runner for the republican presidential nomination, but nikki haley has momentum, especially in new hampshire. she is also showing a willing ness to take on trump, at least to a point. she's still far behind the front runner, but boosted by the endorsement of new hampshire's popular governor chris sanunu, nikki haley is drawing crowds and new supporters.

they joined "this week" for an interview as haley tries to appeal to trump supporters and to get their votes. >> i think he was the right president at the right time. but looking at the situation now, our country's in disarray, the world is on fire, and chaos follows him. >> i hear you say that a lot. chaos follows him. is it chaos follows him or does he create the chaos? that sounds so passive, chaos follows him. >> rightly or wrongly, you call it whatever you want to call it, but when you feel it, it's chaos. >> reporter: at a town hall this week, one new hampshire voter urged haley to take a harder line against trump. >> my big concern is that you really need to turn it up on donald trump, that he attempted a coup on national tv. you need to call it what it is. you need to go after him hard. so i would hope you'll turn it up. >> reporter: what do you say to voters like that, who say you really need to draw that line? >> because i -- >> reporter: you have drawn it at times.

other times you say he was the right president and fit for office. >> you're one of those, too. you want me to love him or hate him. >> reporter: i'm just asking you to respond to a new hampshire voter. >> i did. and i responded to him. what i said to them was, anti-trumpers want me to hate them, pro trumpers want me to love them. this is where i stand. there are things i agree with the president on. i had a good working relationship with him. there are thins i don't agree. >> reporter: ron desantis tried hard to get sanunu's endorsement. now sanunu is predicting a win and more for haley. >> she's going to win in a land slide. that's not an exaggeration. >> reporter: haley, desantis and christie fight it out in new hampshire and elsewhere, one thing, george, has not changed in this race. and that is that donald trump still has a big lead in the polls. trump, by the way, will be in new hampshire over the weekend. george? >> right now it is not close. okay, jon. thank you very much. you can see more of the interview sunday morning on "this week." michael? now to the economy.

stocks closed at another record thursday, while consumer spending remains strong. let's go to elizabeth schulze on wall street. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: good morning, michael. christmas is coming early here on wall street, with the stock market hitting new records. the dow jones industrial average closed at an all-time high thursday for the second day in a row, adding 158 points. when you take a step back and look at the dow's performance so far this year, it's gained 12%. put that into a dollar amount. for the typical american's 401 that stayed invested in stocks this year, your balance is up about $13,000. big picture. investors are bullish because the economy is in solid shape. job growth is steady and inflation is cooling, which is why the fed now forecasts that it could cut interest rates three times next year in anticipation of that, mortgage rates have just dropped below 7% for the first time since august. so if you are taking out a $400,000 mortgage at today's rates, your monthly payment at

$2,648 is $230 cheaper than two months ago when those rates were at 8%. still not quite that 2% or 3% rate a lot of homeowners locked in, but it is a sliver of relief in an incredibly challenging market. deborah? >> thank you. encouraging news. now to breaking news on prince harry. a ruling was just handed down this morning in his phone hacking lawsuit against a british tabloid group. maggie rulli has more on that. she is at buckingham palace. >> reporter: good morning, deborah. this was an emotional victory for prince harry. remember, he testified in this case, the first for a royal in more than 100 years. that victory today is one step towards what he calls admission of creating real change. prince harry has won his major legal battle with mirror group newspapers. a judge ruling journalists hacked the prince's phone and has awarded him damages close to $180,000.

>> today's ruling is vindicating and affirming. i have been told slaying dragons will get you burned, but in light of today's victory, and the importance of doing what it needed for a free and honest press, it is a worth while price to pay. >> reporter: the court agreed with harry's agreement that senior executives knew this was going on, saying directors turned a blind eye and positively concealed unlawful information gathering. the prince was suing the mirror group newspapers along with more than 100 other claimants including the estate of the late george michael, accusing the newspapers of illegally gathering information on them between 1991 and 2011 on an industrial scale. this morning the judge ruled there had been extensive phone hacking by mirror group news papers from 2006 to 2011. >> harry said this is never about the money. this was about taking on the big newspaper groups in the u.k., the big publishers of the tabloids.

now he's won against the mirror group newspaper. it will give him a spring in his step for all those other cases. >> reporter: harry's team arguing the newspaper behavior led to the breakdown of his relationship with his then girlfriend and caused him to suffer huge bouts of depression and paranoia. the prince testifying, quote, every single article has caused me distress, but failing to point out any specific examples. the mirror group newspapers said the allegations are not supported by the evidence. and, guys, in the prince's statement that we heard his lawyer read out, he said there's a call to the police to investigate those who broke the law. he ended the statement by saying, quote, the mission continues. guys, it will. remember, this is one of only a handful of court cases that prince harry has against the tabloids here. guys? >> maggie rulli, thanks. good news for parents. more help is on the way for families to arm themselves against rsv. rhiannon ally has the story. good morning, rhiannon. >> reporter: good morning, george.

tis the season, the germ season, that is. parents and doctors have been scrambling to find doses of the rsv shot for infants. since it first became available earlier this year, it's been in short supply. that is about to change. the white house says an additional 230,000 doses of the shots will be made available in january. it asks makers of the shot to speed up production. the antibody shots are different than a vaccine, but do provide protection for infants. now this comes as the cdc warns of an increasing respiratory infection, including the flu, covid and rsv all across the country. the south has been hit the hardest and the number of cases continues to climb in the north. hospitalizations are up across all ages. and officials are saying low vaccination rates and the spread of illness could strain the health care system in the coming weeks. it's urging everyone to get vaccinated. michael, you remember what it's like with little kids. they bring home every germ possible. this latest news about latest shots for rsv for infants is really good news. >> that is great news. thank you for bringing that to us.

>> welcome back to gma. what a throw back, all the way back to 1984 the original "beverly hills cop" starring eddie murphy. the neutron dance. we were just talking ability. we've got some exciting news coming up in our play of the day. following a lot of headlines including what could be a weekend washout. a major storm is on the move. bringing flooding for people along the east coast. might even see tornados in florida. the cdc is warning respiratory infections are on the rise. that includes flu, covid, rsv and health care providers should administer vaccines now. in the past four weeks officials say hospitalizations for the flu are up 200%, rsv up 60%, covid up 51%. now the white house says an additional 230,000 doses of rsv shots will be made available in january. ntsb is out with a final report on a close call at a colorado airport. a jet blue plane had a tail strike hitting the runway on takeoff because the captain quickly pointed the jet's nose to avoid a head on crash to a plane that was on the same runway.

they came within about 2 1/2 miles. plus some good news for our friend dick vitale. the broadcasting legend and former college basketball coach announced he is cancer-free. yes, the 84-year-old was diagnosed with vocal chord cancer in july. he previously battled melanoma and lymphoma. but vitale says he's on the mend and hopes to return to espn and start calling games again very soon. as he said in his post, santa came early for him. that's a gift to all of us. >> definitely. >> his health is a gift to all of us. we've got a lot more ahead including ten days to go until christmas. we're gonna tell you how to get a possible gift giving genius to help with your shopping. that is all coming up, george. now to the idaho college murders. the accused killer bryan kohberger's defense team has been granted access to the home where the murders took place. this morning they are heading there for a second day. eva pilgrim has the story. >> reporter: his defense team at the home ahead of its demolition.

the decision to tear down this house has gotten mixed reaction from the families of the victims. some want to see it go, saying it's a constant reminder of the horror that happened there. others wanted it to stay, at least during the trial, just in case. in just over a week that home will be no more. with a demolition date less than two weeks away, bryan kohberger's defense team granted access to the home where those four university of idaho students were murdered last year. kohberger's attorney seen visiting the home thursday, set to return later today. the university telling abc news the defense indicated they want to take photographs, measurements and possibly gather drone footage of the house. >> they've had access to the scene in the past, way back when bryan kohberger was originally arrested. they now have additional information, so they know where blood evidence was. they know where footprints were.

they are looking to find ways to recreate that information and test it in a way that they can present to the jury. >> reporter: the students were found stabbed to death on november 13th of 2022. the families still devastated. overnight steve goncalves telling abc news, it's going to be another rough christmas. according to the university, the fbi canvassed the home in october, collecting data to collect visual aid that could be used in the trial. >> visual aid provides more information that allow for the understanding of photographs and videos. they can provide measurements. they can provide the location of walls or directions of cameras. >> reporter: prosecutors allege kohberger, a criminology student at a nearby college, broke into the house in the early hours and committed the murders. a judge entered a not guilty plea for him. a trial date has yet to be scheduled.

and wegovy, officials are warning calls to poison control are increasing, too. u.s. poison centers say this year between january and november they received nearly 3,000 calls due to the active ingredient semaglutide. more than 15 times as many calls as they received in 2019. >> as a drug becomes more and more used in the community, inevitably people will take it incorrectly or have side effects from it. >> reporter: since 2019 the percentage of patients receiving the semaglutide prescription has increased well over 900%. the surge led largely by their use helping patients lose weight. but more patients mean more accidents and misapplications, particularly with injecting improper doses. charles mcpherson has been taking ozempic since april to manage his diabetes but said he initially took the wrong dosage. >> i didn't feel well. like i had the flu or something. i still didn't feel well for a couple days, so i went into the emergency room. >> reporter: with those major brand names so highly sought

let's time this out so you understand when the strongest storms will be. there's damaging winds and isolated tornados that can happen all the way into south florida. there's going to be a lot of lightning with that wind. here's the timing. we start with the worst weather in florida on saturday. then we start to move this up the coast. by sunday this is when we've got very heavy rain wrapped on the shore line. some winds close to atlanta here, so major airport, check. then raleigh durham involved in this. washington, d.c. and the heavy rain. new jersey, new york, connecticut, boston, all involved with wind and heavy rain. that's monday morning for new york area airports. here's the rainfall totals we think we're getting into. this is 3 to 4 inches of rain into the northeast which you know will slow things down. look at this. this is a general 2 to 3 inches of rain down the east coast with some heavier totals of 4 to 6 inches right there in the carolinas and south florida. when the east coast airports are impacted, it can impact planes going everywhere. that's why we're having everyone pay attention to it. >> thank you very much, sam.

now to dog owners on alert as a mysterious respiratory illness seems to be spreading. >> reporter: that's right. that illness in dogs is now reported in two more states. listen up dog owners. nevada and pennsylvania reporting cases of atypical canine infectious disease complex. that brings the total number of states that this illness has been reported in to 16. veterinarians say symptoms can include lethargy, coughing, sneezing, difficulty breathing, fever and loss of appetite. while the cause of this illness is still unknown, some vets are advising owners not to expose their dogs to other dogs who are coughing. make sure they're up to date on vaccinations. take extra precautions when traveling this holiday season. george? >> okay. thank you very much. we turn to big spending this holiday season despite high prices. becky worley back with that. some important shipping deadlines as well. good morning, becky. >> reporter: george, good morning. not just buyers on wall street that are feeling bullish today.

we have heard data from all of the collecting agencies show november has been a big month for buying. the u.s. census says $705.7 billion was spent on food and retail in november. that's up 4.1% from 2022. and then we look over on the online sales, which adobe track, and they say sales were up 7.3% from the same time last year. right now i'm in a brick and mortar store in oakland, california, called pelago. when i was in here the other day with my kids, it was packed. business is booming, they say. this is very good news for the shop small and for local businesses. but for those buying presents to ship or buying presents online, we need to talk about shipping deadlines because those are coming in hot right now. december 16th, that's saturday. that's the deadline for the u.s. postal service. on the 19th is a step up. we go to u.p.s. and fedex deadlines. that's next tuesday.

now to our gma cover story about the rising backlash against tipping. new data shows that some service industry workers are being tipped less than last year. story we first saw in "the wall street journal." eva pilgrim is back with details. hey, eva. >> it feels like you are supposed to tip everyone these days. no one wants to seem like a scrooge so we went to the experts to find out who and how much you should be tipping to show your thanks. this morning the debate over tipping and the question of just how much gratuity is too much. from the cult classic reservoir dogs -- >> throw in a buck. >> i don't tip. >> you don't tip? >> no, i don't believe in it. >> reporter: to today's consumers. >> i think it's evolved to the point where everything is asking for tips. >> reporter: take 26-year-old garrett miller who says after being inundated by requests for too many tips, he's feeling what's being called tipping fatigue. >> i will tip when i go out to eat at restaurants.

i will tip when i order food. but i won't tip and tend to turn it down when it's something that i already know they are getting a full wage for. >> $13 carry the 3. leave a 50. >> reporter: new data reports as of november, service workers in nonrestaurant jobs made 7% less in tips versus a year ago. from making $138 an hour in tips to $128 an hour. >> i am a waitress. 25% very nice. >> reporter: while tipping is down in some place, the holidays are bringing cheer for others like workers in restaurant jobs. gusto reporting tips are now up by 3% from last november. >> i think inflation is leading people to be especially stingy about how much they're spending. and i think that this proliferation of tip prompts is making people question the very nature of tipping.

i think a lot of time if you're being asked for a tip at point of sale, it's up to your discretion. i think it's nice to be generous if somebody went above and beyond, but i don't think it's always expected. >> reporter: experts suggest particularly around the holiday, anyone who offers you a service that you find helpful, feel free to tip them, spread the love and the wealth. >> what are some other tips? >> when it comes to specifics, that's what we're all thinking about here. it is common to tip more this time of year. a thank you of sorts. a bank rate expert broke this down for us this way. deliveries and door attendants is appropriate. a flat tip is appropriate. for baby-sitter, hair stylist, your go to people for regular service, holiday tip of the cost of one service or one week's pay is not uncommon. for waiters or waitresses if you leave 15% to 20% of your bills you could consider leaving 20% to 25% this month. here's the bottom line. what can you afford? experts say it comes down to your own personal financial picture.
