are on the final pre-holiday campaign sprint. new hampshire, the focus this weekend with the first voting of the 2024 race just a month away. >> whit: and in washington, congress is still wrestling with the deal for border security funding, and money for ukraine. the senate delaying its holiday recess in an effort to get a deal done. all of that ahead, but we do begin with that big storm taking aim at the east coast this morning, and what you need to know for your holiday travel plans. let's start with brittany bell from our new york station, wabc, with the latest on that. brittany, good morning. >> brittany: and good morning to you too. so much of florida has been seen seeing rain for the last 24 hours, and that has led to dangerous driving conditions with vehicles losing traction and some drivers losing visibility. overnight, torrential rains battering the sunshine state. millions now bracing for flooding. wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour. watch this driver near venice beach as rain was pummeling the area. the driver goes right over a

seawall, and into the intercoastal waterway. he was later rescued, and he says he did not know the area and could not see with the blinding rain. in the palm beach area, wind bending those palm trees. >> i have been here for 25 years. the first time in december, there is such bad weather. >> brittany: despite many cars slowing to a crawl. this white suv losing control, slamming into a telephone pole in cocoa beach. the streets of hollywood beach flooded, disrupting plans for some in the middle of the holiday season. >> we were going to have a nice getaway, and this is our nice getaway, but it is what it is, you know? >> brittany: and let's start with where that storm is right now. the bull's-eye now coming down across savannah, charleston, and wilmington, and keep in mind, on top of that flood threat, you can see gusts up to 60 to 65 miles per hour. this afternoon, that shift is right on top of north carolina.

that includes raleigh, and even that rain increasing across washington, d.c. now, overnight tonight and into early tomorrow morning, that's when that core comes across the new york city area that includes new jersey, albany, burlington, all the way towards boston and augusta, and keep in mind that's right around the time for your morning commute. now, monday afternoon, most of these downpours start to shift north of boston. rainfall totals ranging 2 to 4 inches with heavier areas ranging up to 4 to 6 inches. gio? >> gio: quite the washout. all right, brittany, thank you so much. this storm is especially rough for early holiday travelers. it's the week before christmas, and we are just days away now from what's expected to be the busiest holiday travel season ever. abc's morgan norwood is at newark liberty international airport with that travel warning. good morning, morgan. >> reporter: hey, good morning to you, gio. you're right. the storm hits as more than 100 million americans from coast to coast prepare for holiday travel, and overnight we are starting to see some delays. according to flight aware, many coming out of this airport, newark liberty, but again, it comes as this holiday travel season gets under way.

but the good news, delta and american are both waiving flight changes for those in and out of that storm zone. airlines are bracing for what is expected to be the busiest holiday travel season ever. more than 39 million passengers will fly between december 20th and january 2nd. united and delta both expecting around 9 million passengers each, but it's american who's expecting the biggest rush. close to 13 million will fly on 110,000 flights over the next few weeks. the busiest travel days, of course, that's going to be this thursday through saturday, and you can expect packed airports, long lines, and possible disruptions, but with gas prices staying steady, aaa says 104 million people will also hit the roads, but of course, to avoid congestion, experts say the best time to drive, of course, is before lunchtime or after 7:00 p.m. that's when you really start to run into those traffic problems, steph, but the big thing to keep in mind, of course, give yourself some extra time. steph? >> stephanie: really good advice.

give yourself that extra time. thank you so much, morgan. overseas now to the war between israel and hamas as israel investigates the deaths of three hostages killed by israel's own forces. abc's ines de la cuetara is in tel aviv with the latest and what it could mean for a renewed cease-fire. good morning, ines. >> reporter: good morning, stephanie, and you can see some of the hostages' families here camping out overnight, setting up tents outside the idf's headquarters. as the israeli prime minister hints that talks could be back on. as officials met in europe this week to discuss another hostage release. [ chanting ] >> reporter: overnight, a sea of demonstrators on the streets of tel aviv demanding answers after israel's defense forces accidentally killed three hostages in gaza. according to the idf's preliminary investigation, these three hostages came out of a building in an area of very intense fighting, without shirts, carrying a stick with

a white cloth. a soldier saw them as a threat opening fire, killing two instantly. one shouting help in hebrew. the battalion commander ordered his troops to stop firing, but minutes later, another soldier shot dead the third hostage. >> we think that israel should put an initiative on the table right now and just go for a deal because this is the only way -- the only way that we can see the hostages coming back. >> reporter: this as we learn of another hostage's death. this 27-year-old. so far, at least 20 israeli hostages have died, but the idf continuing its relentless assault in gaza. you can see all of these military vehicles heading into gaza just on the other side of that border wall. israeli soldiers fighting hamas inside its vast tunnel network. over 18,000 people killed according to the hamas-run health ministry. this al jazeera cameraman buried on saturday in what has become the deadliest conflict for journalists. civilians desperately trying to survive. this mother and her two children

have already had to move five times. >> i cannot sleep without imagining hundreds of scenarios where they are any one of my family is attacked. >> reporter: and hamas says there will be no talks until the fighting stops. defense secretary lloyd austin meanwhile will be in israel later this week as the u.s. pressures israel to begin winding down the war in gaza. whit? >> whit: all right, ines, thank you. and there are new concerns this morning over rising tension in the region and the supply chain after increased attacks on cargo ships in the red sea. abc's lama hasan joins us now from london with more. lama, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, whit. tensions are rising in the red sea. the u.s. warship, the "uss carney" shooting down at least 14 unmanned drones on saturday. luckily, there was no damage to any of the ships in the area and no injuries were reported. and for the first time since the gulf war in 1991, a british royal navy warship that had just arrived to boost security also

destroying a drone. the british defense secretary saying the target was commercial ships. now, this is just the latest in a series of attacks in the red sea which is one of the busiest and most important shipping lanes in the world. the drones are launched by iranian-backed houthi militants and since israel's war with hamas has intensified, so too have the threats. the houthis warning any vessels with links to israel or sailing to and from israeli ports will be attacked. the houthis launching dozens of drones and missiles forcing at least four major shipping companies to pause their operations, sailing through the red sea, and at stake, the global supply chain including shipments of oil, grain, and consumer goods which of course, could drive up prices and of course, the real potential for a wider conflict. gio? >> gio: and that's the concern. all right, lama, thank you so much for your reporting. and here at home, it's been a busy weekend on the hill with bipartisan negotiations on more funding for israel and ukraine, and the migrant crisis at the southern border is playing a

huge role in this. abc's ike ejiochi is on capitol hill with that. good morning, ike. >> reporter: good morning, gio. negotiations are coming down to the wire. senators have been huddled up all weekend working to reach a deal on border provisions and major changes to the country's immigration system. now, republicans are demanding a deal on the border in exchange for providing money to ukraine in its fight against russia and israel with its war with hamas. president biden taking an active role over changes to the immigration system saying he's willing to make significant compromises on the border in order to break up the current stalemate in congress over wartime aid for allies. now much of the negotiations are taking place in private, but some issues under discussion are raising the bar for asylum standards for migrants, changes to humanitarian parole which is used to let people into the country by essentially bypassing the regular immigration process, as well as fast track deportation authority. all of this comes as ukraine says its military's ammunition stocks are running dangerously

low, and as the situation at the southern border continues to intensify, arizona's governor now sending national guard to the border to help law enforcement deal with the large influx of migrants. any deal the senate makes must be passed by the house and lawmakers are looking to complete a framework for the deal by the end of the weekend with a vote hopefully taking place this week. stephanie? >> stephanie: all right, ike. let's see if that self-imposed deadline is met. thank you so much. now to the race for the white house. former president trump rallying supporters in new hampshire with a commanding lead in the polls. abc's maryalice parks is just back from new hampshire and joins us now with more. good morning, maryalice. >> reporter: yeah, stephanie, good morning. it is the final sprint of these campaigns before the holidays. the candidates all trying to get a lot in, but overnight former president donald trump receiving swift backlash for his attacks on immigrants. in new hampshire, sounding as confident as ever. >> what ever happened to the bounce? with nikki, they talk about the surge.

>> reporter: mocking his gop primary opponents who he called backstabbing establishment losers for trailing in the polls. his speech peppered with personal insults, at one point calling new hampshire's popular republican governor a, quote, spoiled brat. governor chris sununu this week endorsing nikki haley, saying she cannot only win his state, but deliver a republican landslide. beyond his rivals, trump also upped his attacks on immigrants with highly offensive white nationalist rhetoric, evoking similar language to nazi propaganda about the purity of this country's, quote, blood. >> we have been putting everybody first except america. >> reporter: trump's crowd full of fervent fans. >> does the former president trump have your vote? >> yes. >> did you consider any of the other candidates? >> no. >> reporter: also in the state this weekend, florida governor ron desantis who brushed off any idea of joining a trump ticket. >> i would rather be governor than vice president, no question. >> reporter: adding he thinks trump will try to delegitimatize

any results in early states if he does not win. >> if trump loses, he will say it's stolen no matter what. >> reporter: now, responding to those comments from desantis, the trump campaign just said that he's not going to lose, but again, overnight, trump facing a lot of reaction to his attacks on immigrants. the biden campaign put out a statement accusing trump of looking up to nazis and dictators as role models. whit? >> whit: all right, maryalice, thank you. let's bring in jonathan karl who will be hosting "this week" later on this morning. jon, good morning to you. always great to have you. big interview you had this week. you sat down with both nikki haley and new hampshire governor chris sununu fresh off his endorsement of her. she appears to be gaining momentum at just the right time, but will any of this be enough with trump still dominating in the polls? >> jonathan: whit, it is a steep, steep climb, but let's keep in mind, nobody has voted yet. we've seen surprises happen in iowa and new hampshire in the past, although we have never according to our friends at

fivethirtyeight who have looked at the historic trend here, we have never seen a candidate in either party be this far ahead at this point in the cycle and go on to lose the nomination. the closest was hillary clinton losing to barack obama in 2008. he was way behind at this point, but not quite as far behind as nikki haley is. look, one thing that was fascinating about this interview and she's walking a fine line between trying to get trump supporters over to her side, so she has to tell them why to vote for her and not him, but she doesn't want to alienate them, because they are so loyal. in the same sentence praising trump and also attacking him. it's a very interesting back and forth in this interview. >> whit: and as you noted, anything can happen in iowa and new hampshire, and just several weeks away here that we're looking forward to. all right, let's move onto a different topic, jon, and talk about rudy giuliani. a jury ordering him to pay a staggering $148 million to two

former election workers in a defamation case. what's ahead for the man once known as america's mayor? >> jonathan: i mean, what a downfall. first of all, we don't know how much money he actually has because he didn't do the required financial disclosure forms in this case, but i mean, this is -- this was really one of the most bizarre spectacles that we have seen throughout all of 2020, and that says something. the way he personally vilified these two women, shaye moss, and ruby freeman, the way he lied about what they were doing, the way he attacked them relentlessly and the way their lives were turned upside down. the jury here was clearly sending a message not only that they were damaged, but that giuliani should be punished for that. whether or not they will actually see any of this money, whether giuliani who is riddled with legal debts will be able to pay any of it, that remains to be seen. >> whit: and he was still

telling reporters until the end to stay tuned. >> jonathan: unbelievable. >> whit: thank you so much, and tune into "this week" later on this morning. you can catch jon's sunday exclusive joint interview with republican presidential candidate nikki haley and new hampshire governor chris sununu, and jon speaks with democratic senator chris van hollen about a foreign aid and border policy deal getting it across the finish line. gio? >> gio: now to that warning about respiratory illnesses as the holiday season kicks into high gear. covid and the flu are climbing with rsv reaching its peak. abc's reena roy is following that. >> reporter: we are in the homestretch before christmas and people are starting to travel and get together all while numbers are going up across much of the u.s. this morning, respiratory illnesses on the rise across the country, including flu, covid, and rsv just as americans begin to gather for the holidays. >> people are getting sick and people are also gathering indoors and that risk is spreading those germs to one

another. >> reporter: data from the cdc shows at least 17 states are seeing high or very high levels of respiratory activity. nationally, flu-related e.r. visits are increasing, and in the midwest, hospital admissions overall are up. >> rsv appears to be peaking in some parts of the country, but we are still seeing a lot of cases. influenza like it usually does, is running wild, and covid-19 hospitalizations have been up for the past five weeks. >> reporter: officials at janet weis children's hospital in danville, pennsylvania, say they are at capacity, but are making sure they can take in more young patients. >> we have the ability to take some of our older youngsters at, like, 16 and 17-year-olds and if we have adult beds, we're able to facilitate those. >> reporter: dr. frank maffei telling us they're seeing an influx of children coming in with respiratory illnesses.

>> we are seeing a lot of volume, and perhaps from places that we haven't seen before. so this really is something that we're going to have to deal with. >> reporter: and even though the holidays are fast-approaching, experts say that it's not too late to get vaccinated, and especially an important reminder for those who are high risk. guys? >> whit: important information. thank you so much, reena. we appreciate it. we do move on now to the weather once again and let's get back to brittany bell from our new york station wabc. our weather cameras are showing us the storm as it moves towards us. >> brittany: that's right. keep in mind, this is the latest look at myrtle beach, south carolina. things will get worse in this area for you throughout this afternoon. this is a sign of what's to come. on top of that threat for flooding, we're also watching out for that potential for severe weather. for south carolina, more the same for north carolina. that's where you can see damaging winds and that threat for a few tornadoes. now, switching over to that flood threat, most of these flood watches for florida all the way towards the carolinas expire this afternoon, but off to the north, they start this

afternoon and they last into early monday morning, a line when that rain arrives. also, gusts from 20 to 40 miles per hour keeping in line with that on-shore flow. >> brittany: and just so you can prepare and keep in mind, a lot of this rain and wind impacting major airports. if you have a flight tomorrow early morning, just be patient. >> gio: be so patient. brittany, thank you so much. now to today's huge ncaa title game.

nebraska facing texas for the women's volleyball crown after the huskers shattered an attendance record for any women's sporting event. abc's zohreen shah joins us now with a preview of this. good morning, zohreen. >> reporter: hey, good morning, gio. yeah, both nebraska and texas have really strong teams with a lot of folks expecting this to be a tight game. they will compete for the national title in just a few hours, and it is their third time competing against each other. the nebraska huskers won the first two national championship matches against texas. first in 1995, and then in 2015. the nebraska women's volleyball team set a world record for attendance at a women's sports event. look at this from just this year, over 92,000 fans packing into memorial stadium in lincoln, nebraska, but no team has made more national championship match appearances than texas over the last 15 seasons. guys? >> gio: and i think this is one of the highest selling games.

>> gio: and you can see how happy they were in their faces right there. >> stephanie: yeah. >> gio: let's take a look at some of the other big stories that we're following on this sunday morning. the u.s. and south korea with a warning to north korea, any attack on america or its allies will result in the end of president kim's regime. the joint statement echoes comments made in the spring by president biden. officials from both countries are increasingly concerned with the progress of north korea's nuclear program. >> stephanie: and a consumer alert this morning. quaker oats is recalling some of its granola bars and cereals due to a salmonella risk. the recalled products were sold in all 50 states and include popular chewy granola bars of various flavors. the company says that it informed the fda of its action. there is a complete list of the recalled products on the fda's website. >> whit: and a new rooster now sits atop notre-dame cathedral in paris. it's a pivotal moment for the landmark's restoration following that devastating fire in 2019 before ascending to its perch,

her lawyers releasing a statement saying in part, miss franke is committed to taking responsibility for her role she played. the utah mom of four seemingly pointing the finger at hildebrandt, franke's team saying she isolated her from her family, that franke had a distorted sense of reality. shaped by hidebrandt's influence. >> wiping the floor boards would really bring pain. >> reporter: the 41-year-old known for her tough love approach to parenting was arrested after one of her four kids escaped from hildebrandt's home. >> i just had a 12-year-old boy show up here at my front door asking for help. he's emaciated. he's got tape around his legs and he's hungry and he's thirsty. >> reporter: police finding his sister who they say was also malnourished. records show that police responded to franke's home more than a dozen times over the last few years,

wife, haley, became disoriented and things quickly turned into a harrowing ordeal. he says she is now on the long road to recovery. dancing phenom derek hough saying he and his wife haley erbert are grateful this morning after she was rushed into emergency brain surgery. posting on instagram, a video of them walking near the washington monument. the "dancing with the stars" judge reflecting on the experience writing, it was a time filled with uncertainty and fear, going from living our dreams onstage to a nightmare and an instant, but today, we are filled with hope and relief as we share with you an update. last week, just days after appearing on the "dancing with the stars" finale, haley was diagnosed with a cranial hematoma from a burst blood vessel. she required an emergency craniectomy. a craniectomy is a procedure where a surgeon removes a piece of skull in order to relieve pressure on the brain. that piece of skull later

you're in for a major pattern change. that first storm that starts late today really ramps up tuesday into monday, and then the second one by midweek around wednesday through thursday. that starts to hit southern california very hard, bringing that threat for localized flooding. check out these rainfall totals on the lower end ranging between 2 to 4 inches, but spots near los angeles could get close to 4 to 6 inches of rainfall, even some snow up to 3 to 6 for the higher elevations. speaking of snow, this is an early, emphasis on early, look at that chance for snow for christmas. we could see a better opportunity for spots across the higher elevations in the rockies. that's what's going on across the country. here's what's happening in your neighborhood. >> brittany: so here locally across new york, just wet

2.8 million a day for about ten days straight. busy airports, get there early, and make sure you have tsa precheck. >> gio: okay, so, break this down for us. the best days to fly and the worst days to fly. >> best being cheapest would be christmas day itself. first flight out, that's where you're going to get the best deal in general. new year's eve, people don't like to fly. the best advice i have is go early as possible. expedia just did a survey based on tons of flights and if you leave after 3:00 p.m., the odds of your flight being delayed or cancelled are 50% greater. even if you are not an early bird, take the early flights. >> gio: that's the thing people don't realize, just get on the earliest flight possible. >> when the delays start, it's a snowball effect. they keep going and going. >> gio: if you want to get the best deal and you want to do this last-minute, what do you do? >> there are still tons of deals out there, and airfare has been coming down, so that's great news. economy is good, so get out there and travel. if you want to find cheap

flights in 2024, you have to become a google flights expert. so most people go to google flights. it's google.com/flights. it's free, and you can search up to seven different airports, but here's the feature you have to use. it's called explore. so google flights has an explore map. we were just talking, if you want to go, like, let's say chicago to the caribbean, you can put any weekend in february, march, and it'll pull in all of the flights. what i recommend to people is choose your vacation based on where the cheap fares are. with europe, don't go to europe when it's hot and crowded. take the kids to europe for spring break and you can put in new york city to europe for a week in may, and then go to where the cheapest fares are. >> gio: that's such a good idea, and also the google flights tracker, the price tracker. >> you can actually sign up for email alerts and also, using your points because i'm the points guy, there is an instagram account i follow, roame.travel, and they post all

back now on "gma," with how back now on "gma," with how much your dollar is getting you this gift season. abc's alexis christoforous takes a look at the shift in buying power. good morning, alexis. >> reporter: good morning, stephanie. high inflation was last year's christmas grinch, and while inflation is still with us this holiday season, consumer prices have been steadily cooling off. consider this. last november, inflation was at 7.1%. this year, it was less than half that at 3.1%. prices have come down in many retail categories, especially ones that end up under the tree. for example, toy prices, down

2.8% this november versus the same time last year. appliances, furniture, and bedding are more than 3% cheaper and we're spending nearly 2% less for sporting goods. the biggest price drops were in tech. televisions down 9.5%, and smartphones are 14% cheaper. now on the flip side, we are spending more this holiday season for things like jewelry and watches, up 1.7%. prices for tools, hardware, and supplies are also higher than last year, and apparel is more expensive, especially for men and boys. up nearly 3%, and we're spending about 4.5% more to go to movies, theaters and concerts. >> alexis, this is a time crunch for gift buying. just yesterday, i bought a bunch of stuff for my family, brothers and sisters, and i found that a lot of the items were on sale yesterday, but they were cheaper yesterday than a week ago. so, where can we find the best last-minute deals? >> reporter: first of all, kudos to you for being able to do that.
