building a better bay area moving forward, finding solutions. >> this is abc seven news. >> good evening and thanks for joining us. i'm diane lim. we begin tonight with the weather. of course the roads are wet. the wipers are back on as rain returns to the bay area. and the sandbags are out as heavy rain could lead to flooding in some communities in petaluma, the parade must go on a downpour didn't stop football fans from celebrating their state champions today. so right away, let's get to spencer christian with a look at what's ahead. spencer, things are going to get heavier. >> they are indeed diane. you know we had some heavier rain earlier today. we've got a little bit of a pause in the activity right now, but we have several rainy days ahead of us. let's take a look at live doppler seven right now. and you can see it's fairly quiet across most of the bay area. the heavier concentration of rain has pushed to our east, but just offshore off the north bay coastline is a batch of downpours moving in our direction. so satellite radar,

composite image. the looping one here shows what has passed through the region and that area of not quite clearing, but it's certainly a calmer period of weather coming in for the next couple of hours or so. let's take a look at our abc seven exclusive storm impact scale tonight. storm is a level one, so that means a storm of light intensity through the nighttime hours. we expect more scattered showers to develop later. maybe even some isolated downpours. and we can expect heavier, more widespread rain overnight going into the morning commute tomorrow. here's our forecast animation after midnight, the rain becomes much more widespread, much more intense. it's going to be a wet and soggy and slippery morning commute, and the evening commute won't be much better as more rain will come pass through the area tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow evening, followed by yet more waves of rain tomorrow night into tuesday. and as we look at the estimated rainfall totals by . thursday, over 2.5in in san jose, over four inches in parts of the north bay 70 forecast. coming up a little bit later dion. >> all right spencer, thanks now

to abc7 news reporter cornell bernard. he is live for us in san francisco with a warning and some advice about the weather. cornell, nice to see you're not drenched. at least not yet. >> at least it is dry for now. dion but the rain definitely back with us. like the sign says, flooding possible here on the embarcadero from high tides and rain, the message this week be prepared. try to stay dry. the rain moved in sunday morning in san francisco, drenching the embarcadero and the golden gate bridge south of market. these flood barriers are up at 17 and folsom streets to try and prevent the kind of flooding the neighborhood saw last season. >> i thought it was like part of some construction site, so i didn't mind it at all, elias greninger is glad the city is prepared for rain because he's not, so i didn't bring a raincoat at all, so i don't. i'm not really sure what's going to happen in san anselmo. >> miguel aguilera just filled eight sandbags at this city station to keep his garage dry.

>> the water coming in down, down to the to the gate. yeah, down to the gate. to the garage. >> a very wet parade in downtown petaluma celebrates saint vincent de paul high school's state football championship. the downpour didn't stop folks from coming out. >> poor kids. they did smile in spite of it. so good for them. >> exciting that the team. the team wase the way to the finals and we came down to support them, clap and wave and cheer them on. the center was a fire department posted on x warning about the potential for urban and small stream flooding. >> thunderstorms and gusty winds possible through monday on the russian river. sonoma water will soon be deflating its rubber dam in forestville as river flows increase with the incoming storms, we're predicting river flows can reach upwards of 3600 cubic feet per second, and we definitely don't want to be damaging the rubber dam during those high river flows. now, monday morning's commute could

different story. a little while ago we were inside. we met the castillo family from santa cruz. they are traveling to new york city for christmas, then toronto and then niagara falls. the fam is so excited about beating the holiday rush by traveling tonight. they plan on going to rockefeller center, central park, and the empire state building and a fun tidbit here. the little ones have never been on a plane and have never been in those cold weather conditions. have you seen snow? >> no. you haven't seen snow. if you get to see snow, what are you going to do in the snow? >> um, make a snow angel. >> you're gonna make a snow angel. i grew up in new york city and i've traveled the world, and i've yet to find another city with the christmas spirit and. >> and how it gets totally decked out for christmas. >> and back out here live at san francisco international airport again. those crowds have picked

up a bit outside, but still smooth sailing on this sunday night. the busiest days of this week will be thursday and friday, so you'll want to give yourself some time to get here. get through security as you get ready for your flight. also, there have been some storms across the country today. those are not having any sort of significant impact to flights here at san francisco international airport. live at sfo. j.r. stone abc seven news. we will be watching that very closely. >> all right, j.r. thank you. >> now, next saturday is expected to be the most congested day on the road. if you're driving head out early. the very worst time to travel will be between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. one of san francisco's very lastrillionemaining toy stores may have to close its doors if business doesn't pick up soon. the beloved jeffrey's toy store in union square, which has been family owned and operated since 1938, has been hit with hard times. there were once seven jeffrey's toy stores in the

city, but this one on kearny street is all that remains, says the pandemic's been hard on people. >> uh- the uptick in crime. we i look around me right now, and i see so many buildings that are closed, are shuttered. um, why are we here? well well, we love san francisco, so we love toys. and, um, we're the type of family that just doesn't give up. >> just keep going. the store's co-owner says this week will determine if the store survives after christmas. an iconic san francisco business closed for months, will be back open just in time for christmas. liguria bakery was forced to close after a fire in august, and hopes to reopen in just a few days. the north beach staple has been around since 1911 and it is famous for its focaccia. the scirocco family tells me they're grateful to be opening just in time for the holidays. they say christmas eve is the busiest day

festival of globe held its annual toy and blanket drive at the fremont hindu temple. abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel was there for the event, which is dedicated to helping local children in need throughout the community. >> we started this blanket drive 1983 when we established this temple and now it's gone into toy drive. the educational materials, so we try to give it to everybody who we can out there and more giving the better. whether they are poor, whether they are any creed, color, any race, they all need

to be helped. >> toys donated by the temple's drive have gone to children in alameda, santa clara and contra costa counties in the south bay. tomorrow, sacred heart will begin its annual christmas food box distribution. they'll be giving out food and gift boxes worth about $150, to families who could use a little help this holiday season. this is their 59th year giving out the boxes, and sacred heart hopes to give more than 18,000 boxes this year . a special donation inside a salvation army kettle is bringing a little holiday joy. a donor in boston left a wedding band and an engagement ring inside one of the group's red kettles. they also left a note saying the rings were from their first love, and they wanted them to matter again. salvation army says the proceeds from the rings will go a very long way to food on a table for a family. >> toys under a christmas tree. a utility bill paid rental

assistance. i was in shock. i was honored that somebody would think of the salvation army. we thank you and we love you. merry christmas. >> oh, that is lovely. the rings are worth an estimated $1,500. well the weather didn't dampen spirits for some in san francisco today. the crowds enjoying some big laughs on a cloudy day. and as we take a live look outside, looking dark and pretty clear for the most part. but more rain is ahead. spencer is back with your accuweather forecast first, and the 40 niners are on such a roll that brock purdy's biggest threat for the mvp award is coming from inside the house. >> christian mccaffrey had another mammoth day. three touchdowns as the 40 niners flew past the cardinals and are now division champs. sports is next

our way. but generally, not only is has the rainfall sort of eased up a bit, but the wind is relatively calm as well, as most wind speeds across the bay area are under ten miles per hour. so on this calm evening in emeryville, we have a nice view here. it's currently 57 degrees in san francisco. oakland 55. we've got 59 at hayward and san jose. san mateo 54, 686 at half moon bay. that's the warm spot and calm conditions over the bay waters as we look toward the bay bridge. a few clouds in the sky at the moment and it will be raining a bit later, though right now it's 51 degrees in santa rosa, 50 in petaluma, napa, 57, fairfield, 5051 at concord and 53 at livermore. and these are the forecast headlines tonight. lightrillionain and showers will redevelop and overnight they'll get heavier and steadier through the morning commute tomorrow and on tuesday wednesday we can expect more rainy weather right on through the middle of the week. so the storm impact seal the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale indicates that the current storm is a level one. and through

tonight, we expect showers to redevelop, but there may be a couple of isolated downpours. certainly there will be downpours overnight as the rain gets heavier and steadier and more widespread going into tomorrow morning. overnight, low temperatures will be mainly in the mid to upper 40s, around 50 degrees in oakland and san francisco. so highs tomorrow. we'll see mainly mid 60s even near the coastline up in the north. north bay though a little bit chillier with highs mainly in the upper 50s. and on we go to the forecast animation starting at 7:00 this evening. notice between now and midnight we'll see the rain redeveloping and waves of rain swinging through the bay area during the overnight hours. the morning commute is going to be a wet and slippery one for sure. in fact, the evening commute tomorrow will also be wet as the rain continues to push through the area with more waves of rain developing behind it into tomorrow night and tuesday morning followed by yet more bands of rain tuesday night into wednesday morning. it will all start to wind down just a bit late wednesday into early thursday, and by thursday morning, 11:00 or so, we expect

rainfall totals to be near 2.5in down in san jose over three and a half here in san francisco, three and a quarter in oakland up in the north bay, many locations will have received more than four inches of rain by thursday morning. so very, very wet week ahead. and here's the accuweather seven day forecast level two storm tomorrow. giving way to more rain but only a level one on tuesday. level one still wet and unsettled on wednesday. thursday we expect to be dry at least later in the day . thursday also marks the beginning of winter. then next friday, partly cloudy, drier, fairly mild but we get a cooldown next weekend. it's going to be a bit chilly, although it will be dry now. >> sports from abc seven news. >> good evening. with a win, the 40 niners would clinch the division and nobody was more motivated than brock purdy. it was a homecoming for the phenix area native and in addition to all the friends and family in attendance, purdy brought a legion of 40 niners fans with him. it sounded like a 40 niners home game in there, purdy spending time with his dad. his

mom and his fiance before the game. that's some good quality time before the game, the cardinals scored on the opening drive. the niners matched it. don't know how anybody can leave deebo samuel that wide open. seven all that was purdy's first touchdown of the day. more to come next. cardinals drive going for it on fourth and three. kyler murray picked off by charvarius ward and he spells paydirt 66 yard pick six. it's 14 seven. he had two interceptions on the day. second quarter near disaster for the niners. purdy scrambling gets hit hard. he goes down. he had to leave the game. 40 niners fans everywhere in a collective state of shock as he heads to the blue tent. but he was okay. returning a few plays later. picked up where he left off, throwing a five yard touchdown to christian mccaffrey, 2113 at the half. and yes, purdy is pretty awesome. third quarter purdy rolls out. now it's mccaffrey wide open. so wide open. he falls down gets up. and then he scampers into the end zone. he has seven touchdowns. just against the cardinals this season. cards score again. but

so do the 40 niners. purdy to deebo for his second touchdown of the game. got to see that one from the pylon. cam purdy threw four touchdowns as the niners win 4529 and take their second straight nfc title. a happy homecoming for purdy. you know i've always dreamed of being able to come home and play in front of everybody. >> and just because of how much i know that they have my back and support me and so i hope i was able to give them a good game. man. >> i'm excited. i'm excited. that was the goal coming in and that's the goal every season. that's the standard. we just want to get in the playoffs. >> when you win your division, it's a much better road in the playoffs and i know the guys were pumped about it. um, but now our biggest thing is, is making sure we got two home games and trying to get a bye. so um, that's what we're focused on now. >> next up for the 40 niners, a christmas day matchup with the ravens. the 40 niners will headline a full slate of christmas day action right here on abc seven, including the warriors visiting denver at 11 a.m. and of course, toyota after the game will wrap it all up

like a nice present. bills fans calm and collected as usual as they hosted the cowboys for boss josh allen threw for 94 yards, but did toss a touchdown pass to james cook here and ran for another, becoming the first player in nfl history with at least ten games with a rushing and passing touchdown. as the bills ran all over the cowboys in this one, cook had a career high 179 yards rushing and this neat flip here into the end zone. i don't care what you say that has got to hurt, but it was all in good fun. dak prescott entered the day as the mvp frontrunner. not anymore guys 134 yards in this interception. dak was held without a touchdown for the first time since week one. bills roll 3110 snapping the cowboys five game win streak . and the warriors just now getting started in portland on the second night of a back to back last night, while stephen curry was busy scoring 12 points in a row to give the warriors the lead for good late in the fourth. up in sacramento, the kings keegan murray hit a franchise record 12 threes just one off curry's personal best two away from tying the all time
