parts of the bay area. good morning. it's tuesday, december 19th. >> yes, and it looks a little bit better than we saw yesterday . >> yeah, you're right, it's not as widespread or as heavy. but we're still dealing with showers. not only this morning, but for much of the day today. here's live doppler seven. you can see it's really parts of the south bay and the east bay that are dealing with some of the more moderate showers will press on in a little bit closer. here's fremont pleasanton, some heavier showers working off to the north and east this morning. it's a similar story across parts of the south bay right now from los altos, cupertino, sunnyvale, saratoga. seeing some heavy rain, lighter showers around campbell and san jose right now on the abc seven storm impact scale, it is a level one today, continuing into tomorrow, so we'll have showers, some scattered downpours throughout the day, gusty winds at times the biggest inconvenience is really minor flooding on some of our roads where we do have some of those heavier downpours. so future weather the theme today we're just in and out of those scattered showers. it's not raining the entire day steadily, but we'll have those scattered showers throughout the afternoon

and the evening. temperature wise. we'll get us into the 60s once again. still have that mild south wind supplying us with the moisture and mild temperatures this afternoon. that's the forecast today. let's see how we're doing on the roads with sue this morning. good morning. >> good morning. not as busy as yesterday but still we've got wet roads out there and already starting off the morning with the chp law giving us about almost 30 incidents and most of those solo spin outs due to standing water. and just be careful out there. we've got some winds also, and drew will be telling us about that. you can see the sheen on the roadway. a couple of problems spots. we had an accident coming into oakland. this is on 580 right near lakeshore. so heads up, you can still still see some slow traffic there. and it looks like an earlier accident. west, 24 at wilder, has been cleared again. it's just going to be wetrillionoads this morning guys. >> it sure is an and that's a repeat of yesterday. the past 24 hours have been pretty wild.

here's what it look like at alemany. and bayshore in san francisco yesterday. flooding impacted the southbound on ramp to highway 101. the rain was too much and too fast for some roof gutters in san francisco. this building near the embarcadero spewed water from its drains and look at that. this is just across the street, actually, from our studio and nearby a small geyser shot from this downtown storm drain. heavy rainfall can make this happen when water rushes into sewer pipes too fast and it traps air. abc seven news reporter lena howland is out there in the rain this morning. she continues our coverage from the bay bridge toll plaza. and. >> here at the bay bridge toll plaza, drivers have already been experiencing a very wet and slow

commute into the city so far this morning, and we saw multiple issues on our drive into the bay bridge toll plaza this morning. take a look at some of this video just into our newsroom from overnight. from some of the rain and flooding across san francisco. we saw flooding on highway 101. the transition ramp at the i-80 split near northbound 101 and grand. we saw cars continuing to drive through that flooded highway. chp says that's where some lanes had flooding up to 12in. this wet weather also caused big problems for drivers on the roads. yesterday, two people inside of this honda pilot died after they went off the road in the rain, possibly hitting a tree, according to chp officers. it happened along i-680 in pleasanton. this is the latest in not one, 2 or 3, but at least four fatal accidents across the bay area over the course of the previous three days before getting behind the

wheel this morning. we do have a few very important reminders for driving in the rain from chp. they are urging drivers to drive with their headlights on today. stay alert for vehicle hydroplaning, which happens when driving too fast in wet conditions. apply brakes slowly as they may pull and be sure to leave some extra distance between your car and the car in front of you. so it's another important reminder to make sure that you are taking enough time to get out the door this morning. leave yourself some extra time because this might be a slow commute around the bay area this morning. for now, reporting live in san francisco. lena howland abc seven news lena, thank you. >> if you're in san francisco and you're worried about flooding, you can pick up ten free sandbags. they're available at the public works operations yard at marin street and kansas street. that's open monday through saturday from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. you have to bring a proof of address. and don't forget, you can check out the abc7 bay area app for the latest on weather conditions and to access the same weather radar

that drew and our weather team uses search abc seven bay area in your devices app store to download it. >> protesters facing charges for shutting down the bay bridge last month planned to rally with their supporters in san francisco again today, 80 people arrested during the protests are each facing five misdemeanor charges. >> yesterday, hundreds gathered outside the hall of justice as court proceedings began calling on the district attorney to drop the charges. the protests during the apec summit called for a cease fire in gaza. protesters claim their calls were not being heard, so they were left with no other choice. >> all of this could have been prevented if these elected officials called for a cease fire. so people do what they feel like they need to do out of desperation. >> in a statement, san francisco's district attorney says the exercise of free speech can't compromise public safety. but this group says the da's response does not represent san francisco. a woman convicted of stealing more than $40,000 worth

of items from a target store in san francisco is set to be sentenced next month. aziza graves was arrested in 2021, then charged in connection with an organized retail theft operation. investigators say graves used target's self-checkout kiosks to commit about 120 thefts in a year. >> new details in the search for a new oakland police chief, the police commission has sent its top three candidates to mayor shengtao, who says she'll pick one as soon as possible. all the names are not being made public due to confidential, confidential rules. oakland hasn't had a police chief since former chief lauren armstrong was fired in february after being accused of mishandling misconduct cases. experts say whoever is chosen will have a monumental task ahead of them. >> i think it's really important that the mayor get this right. oakland is a unique city and so just picking a chief with leadership skills, skills, you know, that's good. but i think

you're going to need a unique chief. >> it's not clear if former chief armstrong is on that list of finalists. he was cleared of wrongdoing, and he says that he wants the job. however, mayor tao has said that she would not rehire him. >> plans to cut bureaucracy in san francisco have reportedly run into trouble just two weeks after it started. our media partners at sf standard report the group together, sf action, has withdrawn a ballot measure that was intended to cut the number of city boards, commissions and advisory bodies in half. the idea was to empower the mayor, but this measure would have unintentionally shifted more decision making to the board of supervisors. the group says they're now reworking this initiative to change the status quo. developing news this morning, a san mateo county school district is suing a number of bay area based social media company. san bruno park school district filed a federal lawsuit friday in san francisco. the suit claims meta and google's parent company, alphabet, along with others,

purposefully designed their platforms to be addictive and harmful to youth. a similar lawsuit was launched by the san mateo county board of education in march. >> contra costa county has issued more violation notices against the martinez refinery. the notices include air quality violations, public nuisance and an illegal burn after people complained of a grass fire near the plant. the refinery issued a level one alert after the heat of a flare sparked the fire on friday, flaring from the refinery could be seen around the region. it was blamed on an operational incident at 509. >> this morning and the wet pattern continues for another day. live doppler seven showing you some of the heaviest rain this morning in the santa cruz mountains through the south bay, stretching up into the east bay. so we'll press on in a little bit tighter on live doppler seven, show you where that rain is really impacting us the most this morning. it's a line pretty much stretching from mountain view up into fremont through livermore. so definitely five

8680. a lot of the highways this morning in the south bay and the east bay are dealing with wetrillionoadways. it's not too bad once you get north of san mateo into the city, it's really just some light drizzle with overcast skies. but this area of low pressure is quickly moving off to the north and getting replaced by a second one that moves in here later tonight. this area of low pressure to our north supplying us that south breeze, the moisture right now here's our next low developing already. and this one really will impact us first thing tomorrow morning. the winds right now are having a big impact on our temperatures. the winds are out of the south right now. for most of us, they're between about five and 15mph. but that is enough. this time of the year to create really mild temperatures. these numbers you see right now are typical daytime highs. this time of the year, upper 50s to lower 60s. so it feels very mild this morning. and we'll get those temperatures well into the 60s later today. here's the forecast. break it down area by area. it's just a mostly cloudy day with scattered showers inland. temperatures in

gay catholics here in the bay area. here's abc seven news reporter dustin dawsey. >> the catholic church took a step toward a reality free from judgment for devout catholics. bob rucker and his husband, as well as same sex couples around the world. what does this mean for the catholic church right now? >> this is exception. good news. this is the best christmas present and pre-anniversary present for me and my husband. we've been waiting for decades to finally be recognized as followers of christ with no judgment by the leaders of the church. >> the vatican's doctrine office provided guidance for same sex couples to receive blessing without an exhaustive moral analysis, with a formal approval from pope francis. the doctrine saying in part, quote, ultimately, a blessing offers people a means to increase their trust in god. a radical change in vatican policy from a pope who has already shown affirmation towards the lgbtq community in the catholic church. >> this church has ignored the fact that there are followers of christ that are lgbt, who love

jesus and are not going to be pushed out of the church. time to embrace it and the pope is being strong about that. and that makes me ecstatic. >> but rucker admits that this is just a small step, as the document confirms, by reaffirming that marriage is a lifelong union between a man and a woman, and stating that the blessing must not be tied to any specific catholic celebration or religious service. san francisco archbishop cordileone has been a vocal opponent of same sex marriage and shared this statement with abc seven, saying, i encourage those who have questions to read the vatican declaration closely and in continuity with the church's unchanging teachings. doing so will enable one to understand how it encourages pastoral solicitude while maintaining fidelity to the lord jesus christ. change in the catholic church is often slow moving, but professor of christian social ethics at santa clara university, julie hanlon rubio, says the new doctrine highlights the idea that changes in societal norms can shape the church. >> i think that if we had the

view of gay couples that we did 30 years ago, or that the official church did 30 years ago, this couldn't be happening. we have evolved with societies more slowly, so we're better able to say, of course, we welcome this, these couples, for a blessing. >> dustin dawsey, abc seven news. this morning, an iconic san francisco business will reopen its doors. >> liguria bakery was forced to shut down after a fire in august. the scirocco family says they're grateful to be opening their doors again. the north beach staple has been around since 1911, and it's famous for its focaccia. >> ucsf is expanding its bimonthly food pharmacy, where it hands out groceries and food for food insecure patients. the idea is that food is medicine. a physician also gives healthy cooking lessons and nutrition advice on a monthly basis. doctor gina moreno john started this resource a few years ago after seeing a need in the community. >> we found out in 2018 that about 1 in 4 of our patients

doesn't have enough food to eat, so in 2019, we started this program called the food pharmacy. it's a food bank in clinic that really tries to center what the patients need so they can have food to get healthier and to reduce their stress. and, uh, you know, and concerns around budget as well. >> a new grant is helping expand the service to all of ucsf's 11 primary care clinics in san francisco. now, in san jose, volunteers are preparing to donate thousands of tamales for farmworkers in half moon bay. some people learned how to make tamales for the first time yesterday. for others, this is a family tradition. working users say the annual event always turns into a party, with conversations and music. >> today we're making 2400 tamales to give to 200 farmworkers. on wednesday. and so, as you can see, all the people behind me are busy making tamales. we're going to be here until 6 p.m. tonight. um making thousands of somalis tomorrow.

>> teams with the farmworker caravan will go out to donate all the tamales to families along the coast. >> happening today, the salvation army is set to spread holiday cheer to children and families all across san francisco. more than 1600 kids will get a big bag of gifts through the angel tree program. it provides gifts to underserved children and families as a part of the group's local youth programs, families had to pre-register to get these holiday goodies. also today, volunteers and staff at san francisco's glide foundation will be packing and sorting toys ahead of the 43rd annual toy wonderland giveaway event this week. toys will be delivered to kids up to 11 years old that are enrolled in glide programs. the distribution event is just one of glide's many services. this holiday season, children get those bags on thursday. >> a highway detour goes into effect starting tonight near pacifica. caltrans will be clearing drains to help combat road flooding, so highway one will be closed to southbound traffic at the tom lantos tunnel at devil's slide. that closure will be in effect for the next

three nights from 8 p.m. to 4 p.m. the next morning. now, one way traffic controls will be in place to safely guide vehicles through the northbound tunnel. >> 518 this morning. it is a wet start for many of us. this is a live look at san jose this morning. one of the areas that is seeing some of the heavier rain. first thing on our tuesday. here's live doppler seven. you can see there's a line of showers pretty much extending through the east bay down into the south bay, and the santa cruz mountains. you see, over the past 30 minutes we've been in and out of downpours through saratoga, cupertino, campbell, sunnyvale, two, 80, 82. in this area, certainly 85 is seeing some ponding on the roads this morning. it's a slower commute there and that line stretches through fremont up into livermore. and we're seeing some lighter showers around antioch and san ramon, some heavier rain around discovery bay this morning. and that's the theme today and tomorrow will be in and out of showers and downpours. it's a level one light system that's over ahead, continuing into tomorrow. the biggest impact is going to be minor flooding on our area roadways. so future

weather, the showers lighten up in intensity over the next couple of hours. this afternoon. this is 430. we'll track some scattered showers through the region and then we await our next low pressure. this will move onshore early tomorrow morning. expect tomorrow morning's commute to be a bit wetter than what we're experiencing right now, as thatrillionain seems pretty steady through much of wednesday morning. rainfall totals today. on the lighter side, you can see maybe up to a quarter of an inch in spots and then we really add to those totals heading into tomorrow morning where some areas may pick up more than an inch of rain. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. it's mild today with scattered showers. the heaviest rain tomorrow will occur in the morning very early thursday before the sun gets up here. there could be an isolated shower, but much of thursday as winter arrives is just partly cloudy. bright for the weekend, looking very nice for christmas next monday. sue. >> good morning everyone. and as drew's been saying yeah, wet roads. the big issue for your commute again today. you can see sort of the haze on the east

court justice sandra day o'connor. she attended stanford and was the first woman appointed to the court. san the day o'connor was 93. number seven officials say a volcanic eruption in iceland is releasing toxic gas, and people are now being warned to stay away. >> the eruption started yesterday after weeks of earthquakes. if you're thinking about buying one of apple's newest watches for the holidays, you need to act fast because apple is pulling its series nine and ultra two watches from store shelves, starting at noon on thursday, all because of a patent dispute over the watch's blood oxygen feature. now, the decision does not apply to lower end watches like the se model. >> this morning, we're learning the details of google's $700 million antitrust settlement. the mountain view based company will pay $630 million to a fund for customers who will each get at least two bucks. the other 70 million will cover penalties and

you can. >> this morning we've got a live shot for you at san rafael. those taillights are headed past the northgate mall southbound, about a 20 minute drive. and there are periods of. as drew was saying, heavy rain and a lot of hydroplaning this morning. so that's the biggest issue for your commute. we pop all the way down to san jose to see 280, right? by 780 for a 15 minute drive from downtown san jose up towards cupertino. so folks are taking their time. so that's the great news for 280. and here's a look at some of your other drive times, as per usual over the altamont pass, you're seeing some slow traffic. highway four is pretty much in the green all the way into concord westbound, and your drive, as we just saw san rafael into the city, just under 20 minutes across the golden gate. >> thank you. sue. now we want to check in with abc seven news reporter lena howland, who is live at the bay bridge toll plaza this morning with a look at the wet morning commute. there lena. so here at the bay bridge toll plaza, drivers have already been experiencing a very

charges yesterday, a new york jury handed down the conviction of reckless assault and harassment of his ex-girlfriend. prosecutors say majors grabbed the woman's hand, twisted her arm behind her back and then hit her in the head. there is surveillance video of some of the incident. majors has played a marvel villain and was previously set to star in his own movie. now he's facing up to a year in prison. marvel studios and abc seven are both owned by disney. >> a former nba g league player is due in court in las vegas today after being charged with murder. chance kumasi played for the stockton kings. that's a team affiliated with the sacramento kings. the team let him go after his arrest on december 5th. police say marina rogers was in vegas and planned to meet up with her friend sakari harnden, who brought kumasi with her. it's the same
