northeastern airports hit the hardest. >> it's flooded over there. it's flooded over here. like, there's nowhere to go at this point. >> reporter: strong winds up to 68 miles an hour causing ground stops at boston's logan airport for hours. and from north carolina up to the northeast, authorities reporting at least four weather related deaths since sunday. powerful storm knocking out power for more than 600,000 customers as temperatures plunge. massachusetts alone more than 170,000 customers in the dark. authoritys there say it could take days to restore the power. >> we're lucky it's warm so we can stay at home. just some candles and things. >> reporter: throughout the state, heavy winds downing trees. this branch crashes onto the roof of a car. and this tree barely missing a home. in new hampshire, roads washed out. the plymouth fire department closing down streets. the heavy river expected to rise and overflow tonight.

>> we are predicting it to go up another ten feet. that's where it will give us problems. >> reporter: this boat trapped between trees in gorham. and in the midwest the lake effect snow leading to several crashes in michigan. a portion of i-94 closed due to multiple accidents. and remember the busiest stretch of holiday travel hasn't even begun yet. experts expect that first wave of record setting travellers to take off this saturday the 23rd. >> gonna be a packed one, trevor. thank you for that. let's bring in ginger with the forecast for the rest of the week, as millions head out for their holiday journeys. >> even though we've seen the storm move out, we're kind of in that hangover period where you end up with 6 inchs of rainfall. those rivers just so high, they're peaking at major or about to. we've got flood warnings that stretch from rivers in virginia all the way up to maine, much of new jersey, parts of connecticut, rhode island. just watch. anywhere in a flood warning you could see those rivers come out of their banks.

then you have the winter weather advisory. then you have pittsburgh seeing some snow this morning. you know there's cold air behind it. teens is where we'll go for wind chills this morning around the great lakes into the northeast, down to miami where they probably have their gloves on, feeling like the 50s. freeze watches for tomorrow morning along the georgia/florida state line. don't worry this is brief. we warm up 15 plus degrees. chicago christmas eve close to 50 degrees. but rain will be coming with that, too, whit. >> all right, ginger. we'll look forward to that. thank you. battle over the border. the governor of texas signing a law allowing state law enforcement to arrest migrants setting up a legal showdown with the biden administration. mireya villarreal with the latest in texas on what we're learning. mireya, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. that's exactly right. texas governor greg abbott is setting up with another showdown with the federal government and with immigration rights advocates. the groups said the law is one of the most aggressive a state

has taken in response to the immigration issue that we are seeing along the southern border. abbott signed a new law monday which will allow local and state law enforcement in texas to detain and arrest migrants they suspect crossed into the country illegally. carries a punishment of six months in jail and repeat offenders could face up to 20 years in prison. abbott giving judges the ability to deport them back to mexico. abbott blasting the president when signing the bill saying texas needs to defense itself from drug cartels accusing biden of deliberate inaction. the white house also weighing in saying the federal government, not individual state, are the only ones who can arrest for violation of immigration laws. we are not getting a lot of detail in how the law will be enforced, but we do know immigration advocates, organization, are >> laura: preparing to file a lawsuit saying this will

encourage racial profiling and also will not allow migrants to request asylum. more as this plays out in court. robin? >> overseas now to the attacks on commercial shipping in the red sea by iran backed rebels. secretary of defense lloyd austin, who is traveling in the region, announced a new multinational force to protect ships while delivering a warning to iran. our senior national correspondent terry moran has more for us. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the u.s. has announced a ten-nation task force to protect shipping in the red sea, but weeks of u.s. warnings have so far failed to stop these intensifying attacks which are starting to drive oil prices higher. this morning in the middle east, defense secretary lloyd austin rallying regional allies to confront the escalating attacks on ships by iran backed rebels. >> these reckless houthi attacks are a serious international problem and they demand a firm international response. >> reporter: that newly formed

coalition now includes a naval task force to provide intelligence to stop the attacks by the houthi rebel based in yemen. u.s. war ships in the region shot down dozens of missiles and drones. now the biden administration is considering tougher military action, including direct strikes against the houthis similar to the ones against other iran backed militias in iraq and syria. >> we're going to make sure we're doing everything we can to ensure freedom of navigation in the area. >> reporter: the houthi rebels, sworn enemies of israel, will control a significant portion of yemen, have fired on commercial ships in the red sea more than a dozen times in protest of israel's war with hamas. this declassified u.s. government map shows how they are targeting this narrow strait, a critical trade route between europe and asia. several companies have now stopped shipments through those waters, including mersk and oil producer bp. the threat to international shipping so far hasn't driven up

gas prices. while oil prices have ticked up slowly. in fact the national average pht united states for a gallon of gas is now $3.08 a gallon. but this is a long term problem it looks like with potentially long term effects. robin? >> it does appear to that be way. terry. thank you. concerns of a wider war are being sparked by israel and hezbollah which is also backed by iran. our foreign correspondent britt clennett is on the scene in israel for us. good morning, britt. >> reporter: good morning, robin. fears of another front and a wider war despite defense secretary austin's visit to cool the temperature. video showing the moment of a suspected israeli strike on a building yards away from where a funeral was being held for a hezbollah soldier. the iran backed group saying it retaliated with rockets towards israel. this is really part of daily exchanges of fire between the idf and hezbollah. an idf spokes person, jonathan

karika saying we are closer to war with hezbollah today than we were yesterday. now, our team witnessed the back and forth tensions first hand. incoming fire from lebanon forcing us to take shelter. this was just minutes after we heard shelling from the israeli side, too. a soldier there at the border telling me he doesn't want to push forward, but he's areddy when the order comes. u.s. officials are pushing for a negotiated solution to this, but israel's defense minister saying if diplomacy fails, israel won't hesitate to act. michael? >> all right. thank you very much, britt. now to iceland, where thousands of people were evacuated after a massive volcanic eruption following weeks of earthquakes. marcus moore is in iceland with the latest. >> reporter: good morning, michael. i want you to see the volcano off in the distance. you can see that orange glow and that lava spewing into the area. there's also gases rising into the sky. i want to show you what's been happening here. we're obviously in a safe spot. for weeks officials have been warning about the potential for this eruption.

they even evacuated an entire town. this morning there's an urgent effort to protect a nearby power plant. overnight an icelandic eruption. after weeks of warning, the volcano in southwest iceland exploded, turning the sky bright orange. the glow from lava visible for miles, even from the center of the capital and not far from a power plant. watch as fiery fountains of lava flow high in the sky. semimolten rock spewing across the volcanic hot spots. >> they tend to be gas rich so that causes them to shoot up in the atmosphere and produce fire fountains. >> reporter: thick smoke seen wafting skyward. these photos show the earth's crust breaking open exposing the dangerous matter below. just last month numerous cracks opening up in road, steam pouring out of the ground. the seismic activity intensified in the southwestern part of the country. the eruption occurring on iceland's peninsula less than

two miles and half hour from the country's main airport and just ten minutes from the famous blue lagoon one of iceland's biggest tourist attractions. local authorities evacuating nearly 4,000 residents of the small fishing town amid fears of a significant outbreak. >> it's bigger than expected. >> reporter: while no flights have been cancelled yet, holiday travellers fear widespread disruptions because of previous volcanic eruptions like this one in 2010 which crippled air travel for days. and we are still watching that lava off on the horizon there. according to officials, it does appear the intensity has decreased a bit. they're still not out of the woods. the coast guard has been flying helicopters over the region to assess the situation. it is one of the largest eruptions to hit this region in several years. one of the fissures in the

ground is about 2.5 miles long with lava spewing out of it in every direction. >> truly incredible images. as we saw in hawaii, too, there's no telling how long this will last. thank you. we turn to the major change in the catholic church. the move from pope francis, an effort to make it more welcoming to same sex couples. lama hasan join us with this. >> reporter: good morning to you. this is a significant move. it is being hailed as an advance to lgbt people. pope francis is granting roman catholic priests approval to bless same sex couples. while this is a major change, it is important to note the church stresses it is not changing its views on marriage, which it continues to see as only between a man and a woman. it does insist that blessings should not be part of regular rituals so as not to create confusion. it was only two years ago when the church said it could not bless same sex couples because god does not bless sin. but pope francis has also repeated he wants an all

inclusive church during his papacy. he said he was open to having the church bless same sex couples. this is being seen as a big step. it does mark a significant shift. this ruling is being seen as a sign that the church is open to all. michael? >> definitely a big shift there. thank you. now to a time-out for apple watch days ahead of christmas. apple will temporarily stop selling the popular smart watches this week over patent dispute. our erielle reshef is here with more. >> reporter: good morning, michael. of course we're talking about the world's most popular smart watches. december 21st at 3:00 p.m. the tech giant will pause sales of its apple watch series 9 and ultra2 on its website and sales at the apple stores will pause on december 24th. so if you want to buy one of these devices by christmas, time is running out. back in october the international trade commission found the watch's blood oxygen feature violated a company's patent. the case is under review by the biden administration, which could overturn the ruling by

minutes after, he learned what the conviction will mean for what was his budding career. >> not every version of me will take your heart. >> reporter: this morning actor jonathan majors assent in hollywood on hold. as he awaits sentencing. abc news parent company disney saying marvel is no longer moving forward after a jury found him guilty of domestic violence. >> jonathan, how do you feel? >> reporter: majors convicted of two misdemeanors for recklessly assaulting his girlfriend in march fracturing her finger and leaving her ear bloody. he was acquitted of assaulting her intentionally. >> what happened exactly, do you know? >> no, i don't know. she's unconscious. >> reporter: majors called 911 hours after the assault. >> she is my ex-partner. >> all right. >> reporter: finding jabbari on a closet floor in their apartment as seen in body camera footage from police officers.

hours earlier jabbari testified she and majors had been riding home in an suv when he received a flirtatious text from another woman. jabbari snatched the phone and majors tried to pull it out of her fingers and twisted her arm before she felt a hard blow across my head. surveillance video shows major hopping out of the car. majors seen lifting her up, throwing her back inside after running off. jabbari chasing after him. majors team said we are grateful that the jury found' majors did not intentional cause any injuries to her. prosecutors said the assault was the culmination of abuse pf jurors saw text messages that suggested majors tried to dissuade her from seeking hospital care. they heard a recording of majors scolding jabbari. >> how dare you come home drunk in our house. >> reporter: instructing her to behave like michelle obama and coretta scott king. >> i am a great man, a great man.

i am doing great things. not just for me, but for my culture and for the world. that is the position i'm in. the woman that supports me needs to be a great woman. >> reporter: jabbari's attorney said in a statement, justice was finally served. and his lawyer said majors still has faith in the process and looks forward to fully clearing his name. he's scheduled to be sentenced in february when he faces up to a year in prison. >> thank you very much, aaron. let's bring in dan abrams. dan, what do you make of the verdict? >> it was a split verdict, right. there were four charges. he was convicted of two of them. a conviction is a conviction. basically what this jury was saying, they didn't believe it was intentional. they didn't believe he was trying to hurt her. but his conduct was clearly reckless enough to rise to the level of being a criminal offense. >> are you surprised he didn't testify? should he have? >> typically we talk about the fact that criminal defendants don't testify a lot. case like this, i think it's

more likely you see someone testify. but i think one of the reasons he didn't testify is because this is a case where he's thinking about the court of public opinion and the court of law at the same time. so anything he says on the witness stand is not going to be just used against him in a court of law, but could be used him in a court of public opinion. i think hef betting on the possibility of an all out acquittal without having to testify. that didn't end up working. >> dan, as aaron pointed out, he faces up to a year in prison. how likely is that to happen? >> very unlikely. it's unlikely he'll end up serving any prison time. we're talking about two misdemeanors here. is it possible there will be a judge who will want to throw in some jail time to make a statement? 30 day, 60 day, it's possible but i think even that is unlikely. we shall see. >> all right. dan abrams, thank you. we do turn to the former you tube mom influencer ruby franke pleading guilty to child abuse and apologizing to her family in court.

franke wants to take responsibility for the horror she has caused her children and to her entire family adding, she's taking a step in the the right direction to be accountable for her actions. >> this is going to sound like i'm a mean barbarian. >> reporter: franke made a name for herself dishing out tough parenting advice. >> i will say it one more time and you will lose the privilege to eat dinner. >> reporter: franke's defense team accuses her business partner of manipulating and brainwashing her to adopt some of those controversial parenting styles. prosecutors say franke will be key in their case against hildebrandt. >> she has to testify truthfully against hildebrandt. and the washington county's attorney office has done. >> reporter: prosecutors say it was from her home where franke's son escaped to seek help from a neighbor, who called 911, leading to the duo's arrest in august.

good morning, demarco. >> reporter: good morning. the officer is choosing to break his silence in hopes of clearing his name of any wrongdoing and telling abc news that since the shooting in may, he's received a ton of hateful messages, even death threats. it's also had an impact on his marriage and his finances. when i talked to him, he said he wanted to be a police officer before this incident. he changed his mind after that day. >> i can't say that i blame him, but nevertheless, even though he's such a young child, who knows what the future may hold? he may change his mind. maybe once this all ends, totally ends, maybe he'll see law enforcement in a different light, different aspect. >> emotionally, how has it impacted you? >> this has affected me greatly. it's to the point to where three or four fridays ago i just got in my car and left. i didn't stop until i arrived in louisiana just to get away. just to try to clear my head, my thoughts. >> sergeant capers says he knew the boy prior to the shooting

>> you are going to raise us up with this christmas special from the london coliseum. what was it like to be on that stage? >> it was insane. the main part of the special the very heart of it 20 minutes in i tell people why we're there in that building. it's because i was there from the age of 8 with my mom, opera singer. she was a principal when i was little. she was there for 30 years. i used to sit in the little box. my daughter is there, same age 8 watching me do it. it was the weirdest kind of serendipity. but, um, yeah. they were just insane. let's do it the way you want to do it. that's a real pinch me moment. you know that doesn't happen. i had to make sure that i brought it. [ laughter ] >> also i'm sure it's all part of creating a beautiful picture, which allowed you to be the master mind. you're the executive producer.

i thought, i have to make it my own. i come from a theater world. that's why it had to be with theater people around me so you see all the workings. as ep, i wanted to make sure you get like a 360. they were like, oh god. >> but you definitely made it your own. there was something that went viral. another performance you and jason sudakis singing "shallow" which we were singing in the break. we watched this and we were like, we gotta do it. what was it like to sing with him? you did it during a charity event. >> that's how he and i ended up singing that. we wanted to sing something out. we realized it was too high for him. i said he knows shallow. i have never sung it before, but i'd love to sing it. i literally arrived 12 hours before. finished. [ laughter ] then landed on stage.

it is time for a little cooking everybody. jamika pessoa, you hear that? she's singing her debut single "cooking up christmas." >> it's a christmas vibe. >> six days a go, i cannot believe it, before the big day. she's here with essential tip, whether you're hosting or attending. you've got so many great tips. holiday meals can be overwhelming. what did we do the lighten the load? >> break your job into small tasks that way you don't feel overwhelmed the day of. i say start by making your appetizers and freezing them. >> i love that idea. and you can do that. is it too soon? >> it's not too soon.

when you freeze them, you can defrost them and bake them off. even with your cookie dough, unbaked pies. freeze everything. the day of you just bake and sit back and relax. >> what are we doing here? this is very cute. >> this is my pull apart bread roll christmas tree. thank you, fellas. get refrigerated pizza dough. you can do any type of filling. this is a great way to get rid of some items in your refrigerator. i'm doing sun dried tomatoes and mozzarella cheese. you can do this -- you can do sweet or savory. possibilities are endless with this. if you're going to make it ahead, shape it into a bread roll. put it on a sheet pan and freeze them individually. when they get firm put it in a plastic bag. whenever you are ready, the day of, put it on a sheet pan. >> you're cutting the work time in half. >> the oven is preheated. let this defrost, shape it into a christmas tree. give it a little egg wash.

then bake this off in the oven at 400 degrees. look what we come up with. >> decorate the tree after the bake? >> after the bake. we come up with pesto. give it a nice tang or two. green for the tree. i top it off with a little bit of grated parmesan cheese. oh pesto tree, oh pesto tree! when you pull it apart, all that fun stuff. >> all right. give us another good tip. main dish. how can we do it ahead? >> make your casseroles in advance. partially cook all the items in there. for example, macaroni and cheese. boil your macaroni but don't cook it all the way through. when you reheat it, it will be nice and tender. i start with an aluminum pan. it is easy for cleanup. after you bake it off it comes out great. >> under cook the pasta? >> under cook the pasta. cool it first then assemble it. i like to use these pans to stack in the fridge.

the day of, you're ready, you bake it off until it's bubbley and golden brown. i like to dress up the table with these casserole cozies. buy these online. it fits right inside there. matches your decor. >> if we go online and look up casserole cozies. >> casserole cozies. yes. >> chopping vegetables takes a ton of time. let's talk. >> stop chop and go is what i say. all right. all of your vegetables, chop them all up. i have labeled them so you know exactly what you have. you don't want to be crying on christmas day chopping some onions. that's just crazy, right? i even like to label what dish it's going into. onions for my stew. >> how far in advance can we pull off the chop so they still taste good? >> chopped vegetables will last 3 to 5 days in the fridge. you can also throw them in the fridge. >> finally dessert. or leftovers. >> leftovers. people want something to go with but want to take your containers
