evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us for the latest on today's storm. let's get right to abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel. sandhya >> yeah. >> dan, just when you think it's over. not quite. let's take a look at live doppler seven. this storm is not completely done with us yet. and as we look at live doppler seven, you will see where it is raining right now we're going to get you into street level radar first in the east bay. and you'll notice that the rain is falling from oakland across 580 into castro valley. the commute is going to be a little bit slow going heading into walnut creek concord area, you will notice pacheco pleasant hill as we pan around to other parts of the bay area from morgan hill to san martin, highway 101. some slippery roadways. we do have flood warnings and flood advisories for parts of santa clara county. all the way down to san benito county and monterey counties, as those areas will be dealing with rain and flooding potential. here is the area of low pressure . the deal with this area of low pressure is it's not completely

done yet, so it is going to parallel the coastline and as it continues to parallel the coast and move towards southern california, they get slammed with 5 to 10in of rain, flash flooding and all of that. we still have to deal with showers. so 7:00 tonight, south and east bay as we head towards 930. very scattered in nature. 1 a.m. you're going to continue to see those showers wrapping around, going. into tomorrow m it's a level one through tonight. scattered downpours, minor urban flooding, isolate thunder chance in the. forecast. i'll be back with a look at the concerns. the storm is still bringing in just a few minutes. dan okay, sandhya, thanks a lot. >> let's take a look at the

current conditions outside. these are live views of the golden gate bridge, the bay bridge and the san mateo bridge looks pretty good right now, but today it's been a tough day for drivers. all around the bay area. a little slow, as you can see on the san mateo bridge and in the south bay, standing water blocked lanes on southbound 280 just north of highway 17, in san jose. it caused a major backup this morning. as you can see, cars were changing lanes trying to get around the flooded part of the roadway. and there's this rain soaked the morning commute on the peninsula. this is the view from behind the wheel along 280 northbound in san mateo county, approaching the truesdale avenue exit. while roads were slick, we did not see any road flooding in this area. at least. and traffic, as you can see here, was moving along fairly smoothly in the east bay, a crash between an empty bus and a semi truck hauling debris blocked two lanes on eastbound 580 this morning, just past the eden canyon exit in castro valley. >> officials say the driver of the semi was the only person injured. they were taken to the

hospital. their condition is unclear here. and check out this freeway on ramp underwater in oakland. and we also spotted potholes on 680 in pacheco slowing traffic causing at least one flat tire. as you see there, the chp quickly coned off the area before more cars could be damaged. in walnut creek, it was all about preparing for the worst sandbag stations are open, ready for customers. >> we have sand and sandbags at all these stations and if you are uh- in an area that needs sandbags now is the time to get them, he says. >> the rainy season has been relatively slow so far. nothing like last year when dump trucks unloaded nearly 225,000 pounds of sand in a single day. >> all right, let's take you to the north bay now, where downpours caused some big concerns and headaches for drivers and homeowners alike. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn is live in marin county with a look at the weather challenges folks are facing there. suzanne >> so, dan, we are in green bay tonight. there is a break in the wet weather, but all around me, directly behind me, clear signs of the recentrillionain. adrian quijano has to be extra careful that his shoes and socks don't

get soaked by the puddles in this parking lot in green bay. i parked right in front of it, but this is all over around the bay is just puddles on the freeway. >> puddles in the parking lots. >> he's drive to work. this morning was a little unnerving. >> it was just pouring rain like i. i kept a good distance from the car in front of me. >> for toby richards of marin county, it was a similar story. >> driving down 101 southbound. it was very hectic. there's a there's a lot of rain. um, i mean, i saw like four cars hydroplaned multiple times early this morning, rain pounded parts of sonoma county. >> this is how it looked along the coast in the town of jenner, along highway 116 near monterey. yellow debris from a rock slide in front of the monterey fire station. the streets flooded from the downpouring. rain and runoff hours later in santa rosa, we got a glimpse of this flooded street. santa rosa fire, says crews had to go in and clear out the areay hand. we checked in with sonoma county fire district early this morning. crews rescued a family along mark west station road near the town of windsor. their

four door sedan stalled along a flooded road. >> it was still dark. they may not have seen the water. i'm not quite sure we always are telling people turn around, don't drown. >> also today, this home in summer home park neighborhood in sonoma county was redtagged this after a massive 250 foot redwood tree came crashing down beside the home early yesterday morning. it also took down several power lines. neighbors told us that they had been working to get the tree removed, and it was scheduled for january, but with the impacts of this storm coming in, lots of rain, um, and wind, you know that definitely partially played a role into the tree coming down today. a reminder for drivers. take it slow. meanwhile, sandbags like this one in san rafael, marin county, were empty. but city leaders remind people the next big storm may be just around the corner. >> please prepare for the community can prepare by purchasing sandbags. there's also free sandbags within certain jurisdictions across the county and making sure that you're signed up for local emergency alerts.

>> and when it comes to the recentrillionains, authorities tell me that some of the biggest trouble spots around here were in southern and central marin county. we're live in green bay tonight. suzanne phan back to you. >> okay, suzanne, thanks a lot. let's go to the mountains now. a live look at conditions in tahoe from our camera at zephyr cove. no snow falling at the moment, but stormy weather certainly left its mark there. crews dealt with this rock slide this morning on highway 50 and echo summit. the sierra got hit with rain, sleet and snow, and roads are certainly turning icy at night as the temperature drops. there are no chain requirements, however, on 80 or highway 50, traffic on 50 is down to one lane as various locations at various locations from echo summit to el dorado county. because of avalanche control work that's being done, this storm has brought power outages to the bay area. >> let's take a look at p-g-and-e's map of current outages. the worst right now, about 850 customers without power in antioch and another 800 in the dark in scotts valley.

now to a live look at san francisco international airport. the airport has 324 delays and two cancellations. today, it's about half of what sfo reported monday and tuesday do not forget, you can check out the abc seven bay area app for the latest on weather conditions and access the same live doppler seven radar that sandy and our weather team use. search abc seven bay area in your devices app store to download it. well now, some transportation news driver less vehicles have made a lot of headlines in san francisco. >> as you know, both positive and negative. abc seven news reporter tara campbell explains a new study from waymo that claims driverless cars are far safer than ones with humans behind the wheel. so this is our ride right here. >> and he actually just pulled in down there. >> abc seven news executive producer brandon bailey is talking about waymo robo taxis. bailey's been leading the way on the station's coverage of both waymo and cruise autonomous cabs. >> we've been covering it since, um, sincnce april of this year.

and just watched the trajectory of both of these companies, cruise and waymo. >> wednesday, waymo releasing a new study showing its fully driverless taxis have a 90% lower crash rate than human drivers in san francisco. so how is developed what we think is a accurate comparison of humans driving in the same condition as trent. victor is the director of safety research at waymo and says this is the first of its kind study covering a little over 7 million miles in three cities, including more than a million and a half miles in san francisco. comparing driverless cabs with human drivers. when we compare those two with each other, we see that we're involved in far fewer crashes. >> we're viewed. involved in far fewer injuries and police reports. you know, 7 million miles sounds like a lot, but it's really a small sample size. >> so when you start to think about how that translates over hundreds of millions of miles of

driving, uh, again, i think this is early innings, but but encouraging. >> waymo submitted this study to scientific journals to be peer reviewed, a process that's likely to take several months. >> in the meantime, there have been some outside academic s who have already looked at the paper, examined it. they'd say that there's some some really interesting numbers that that sound really upbeat notes about the safety of autonomous driving technology. >> the study comes on the heels of this crash in san francisco involving a cruise vehicle, which prompted the dmv. to pull their license to operate in california, stalling the av industry's momentum. i think especially after what happened to cruise the battle that waymo and all these robot taxi companies are facing is a battle over pr, right? >> public perception. are these vehicles safe? >> are they safe and are they reliable? we've seen countless incidents of robotaxi stalled, blocking traffic and even emergency vehicles. >> all right. so now it says waiting for intersection to clear. >> brandon experiencing a hiccup himself. the waymo refusing to turn left at this intersection

a caravan to surprise half moon bay farm workers with tamales and christmas presents. this truck was packed with 300 bags full of gifts. farm worker jose menchaca was thinking about his two daughters the whole time. what does it mean to have this nonprofit come here? it helps us a lot when you send your garcia saw the truck and the volunteers . she was overwhelmed with joy. >> we feel special. >> yesenia started working here a decade ago. >> i actually started right after high school. >> now this farm is home to her and her entire family. she showed us inside her home. >> my father in law, mother in law, sister in law, her husband and her uh- baby. >> wow. >> are you ready for christmas now? yeah. volunteers with the farm worker caravan make thousands of tamales to go along with all as gifts. are you considered santa? elves sure. tamales tamales and feliz

navidad. these two groups joining forces to say thank you to farm workers. after a trying year following a mass shooting and the pandemic. gracias por todo. >> the moments of celebrations, in the moments of pain. >> if we are in those moments, then we know that we are doing our job. the caravan making stops at six farms in half moon bay. >> at this farm, 20 farm workers took a break from harvest to receive gifts for many, this was their chance to get presents for their kids. juarez got emotional. he didn't have gifts for his four kids this year. today he will go home and place gifts under the tree. i'm really happy about this. >> no tenemos para sufficient dinero para comprar las cosas. sometimes we don't have enough money to buy things like this. they was es alegria para los babies. babies. >> my babies are going to be very, very happy. raul went back to the field. the caravan

alhambra valley road. so the evening commute does include some slippery roads. as we look at the inland east bay, right around danville, san ramon acosta boulevard, 680. watch out . a coastal flood advisory has been issued that starts at 5 a.m. tomorrow until 9 a.m. tomorrow, and that is because high tide is coming up around 640, and that is going to lead to some minor coastal flooding. 6.9 to 7.2 feet. so just keep that in mind, especially if you're going to be out and about near the bay shoreline or along parts of the coast. here's a look at the storm concerns as we're still dealing with water on the roadways. standing water on the roadways. a lot of it has receded, but now we're getting saturated and the rain is falling on top of saturated ground. localized flooding certainly possible power outages, a low likelihood thunder chance, a low likelihood. so it's really key. the flooding concerns. that's in that moderate to high category area of low pressure spinning off our coast. this is the last in the series for this week that

has been pulling up the moisture . we got drenched this morning across parts of the bay area. rain is now falling, not just here in the bay area, but in southern california where they're going to get slammed. there are concerns about flooding issues there as well. 24 hour rainfall totals more than two inches in ben loman in the santa cruz mountains, picking up close to two in santa rosa, kentfield, over an inch in san francisco, oakland. you will notice san jose getting 8000/100 of an inch more than an inch in redwood city. now, some of these areas in the inland east bay, about a third to almost a half an inch of rain, as we had expected for today. so here are the 72 hour rainfall totals so far. look at ben lomond over seven inches of rain so far. santa rosa close to five 2 to 3 were pretty common from san francisco to oakland to san carlos, san jose about an inch and a half of rain. here's a live view from our sutro tower camera and while it looks all quiet here, it is definitely not completely quiet across the bay area. 57 in the city, 57. also

right now in hayward, 56 in oakland, san jose 58, san mateo and half moon bay, 57 degrees. watch out for some wetrillionoadways as this is the golden gate bridge. mid to upper 50s from petaluma to santa rosa 54. right now in fairfield and concord. here are the headlines tonight. scattered showers tomorrow, though a few lingering showers. and as we hit the weekend, cold mornings, sunshine in the afternoon. here is a look at what you can expect. it's a level one storm on our abc seven news storm impact scale through tonight. scattered downpours, minor urban flooding expected with the isolated thunder chance. it's a slight chance as we go. hour by hour, 7:00 tonight. still looking at those showers wrapping around. coming back around and towards the north bay. 1130 tonight you will notice those showers still continuing into the wee hours of the morning. and then tomorrow morning, one last push as that low moves towards southern california and baja, southern part of our viewing area will have the best opportunity for seeing any showers. but it's not a widespread thing. tomorrow

which is why there's no storm impact scale for tomorrow. temperatures 40 and 50s tomorrow morning. tomorrow afternoon it is a milder day. numbers will range anywhere from the low to the mid 60s. most of you will see a mix of sun and clouds, but a few showers will linger in the southern part of our viewing area. here's the accuweather seven day forecast and it does feature for the start of winter tomorrow night at 727, a couple of showers in the early part of the day, and then morning fog giving way to sun on friday. certainly cold shoulder as we head towards the first weekend of winter mornings will be chilly with some frost. the afternoons will be on the cool side when numbers in the 50s. christmas on monday. it's looking pretty cool with some clouds. some sun really nice. so no problems for santa ama and dan and our next opportunity for rain will be the middle of next week. >> all right. sounds good. thanks, sandhya. >> all right. weather is going to be great on christmas. and so is sports on your television. christmas day is game day on abc seven. it all starts with the warriors visiting denver at 11 a.m, then the celtics at the lakers at five. it's football as

highs, dropping 475 points to close at 37,082. the nasdaq dropped 225. the s&p lost 70 points. the s&p experienced its worst day since october. >> does it help to give homeless people money? a usc study took a look at that exact question studying results in both los angeles and here in san francisco. reporter josh haskell from our sister station in l.a, looks at what they found a major cause of homelessness for many is the loss of income. >> could a way out be providing the unhoused with monthly basic income? a usc study shows promising results. >> people that were. like living unsheltered, like in their car or something like that. they were able to like, spend the money on, on gas repairs that sort of thing. um another individual who was in a shelter, now, he he purchases a bike and

he, he does like doordash for employment. there were some people that actually had a section eight voucher, but they couldn't use it because they couldn't get to appointments to see apartments. looking at 69 of the participants who received $750 a month over six months, none of them were able to exit homelessness, but 30% started the program living on the street. >> and after six months, that number is down to 12. of course, it's going to work with someone who's devastated by homelessness, especially if they use the money properly. >> we ask that each month they they submit like a kind of a budget sheet that says, tell us what you spent the money on. and they, they describe that, um, and we have categories for, you know, all the things we talked about basic needs. we do have categories for alcohol, cigarets, drugs in case that, you know, they use money on that. >> the other 70% of participants start the trial living in a shelter and did not see the same kind of decline as those who were living on the streets six months ago. the study shows. participants spent more than a third of the funds on food and housing. reverend andy bales,

the bay area really all day long . today's storm ranks one on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale. you can access live doppler seven anytime you wish on the abc seven bay area app. it does come in handy. >> a new fast growing covid 19 variant has health officials concerned nationally and locally , yet numbers show fewer people are getting the latest covid vaccine. >> data shows some groups of people continue to be less vaccinated than others. abc seven news reporter zach fuentes spoke with experts to find out why the j&j one covid variant is fast spreading and dangerous. >> it's about 21% of our strains here in this country, but the vaccine still works against it. >> still, health officials say not enough people are getting the latest vaccine statewide and here in the bay area, data from the california departmt of public health shows 18% of all resident in alameda county are up to date on vaccinations. >> as of december 4th, san francisco couy saw 21% of its residents and 19% of residents in santa clara county are

vaccinated, though the numbers vary among counties they share. one thing in common our latinex population and african african ancestry populations have even lower rates. santa clara county public health says only 9% of latinos and 11% of african, african ancestry individuals are up to date with covid vaccinations. asian americans have a higher percentage, and the white population is highest, officials say. vaccine fatigue could be one of the reasons, but that's not all. >> this is the first year that that the vaccine has been commercialized. and so we know that for some individuals it may be harder to access the vaccine, particularly for underinsured and uninsured people. >> though the cdc does have the bridge access program to serve more people. >> it's really hard to get these vaccines pharmacies get have to need they need stock. they need, um, availability from the biden administration, and they need to be able to administer them. and they're not getting the supply. >> santa clara county says it's been taking different measures to make sure pharmacies and individuals are able to take advantage of the bridge access program, doing some secret shopper action. >> i'm here at the health

department where we're calling pharmacies that, uh, receive vaccine through the bridge access program and making sure that it's easy for clients to call, get the vaccine and that they're not facing hurdles. and if we find anything, um, we're actually working with the pharmacies and working with the state to try to address those issues. work. doctor gandhi says, has to continue in order to serve under-vaccinated communities. >> we have to keep on rallying as public health people and as infectious disease doctors to make that happen. >> in the south bay, zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> it appears california's lieutenant governor wants to follow colorado's lead and keep donald trump off the state's 2024 primary ballot. melanie kounalakis says she sent a letter to california secretary of state urging her to explore legal options. yesterday, the colorado supreme court disqualified trump from holding the presidency under the constitution's so-called insurrection clause. this case could end up at the u.s. supreme court. i don't think it's going to take very long. i think the supreme court has to rule quickly because we're printing

primary election ballots. so no, i mean, there is a situation where the supreme court agrees to take the appeal, and then they sit on it. but that would really be, i think, harm not just the candidate. it's not just election administration officials, but also the public. we need clarity on who our candidates can be. trump is appealing colorado's ruling. fellow republican candidates, including nikki haley and chris christie, have come to his defense, saying these issues should not be decided in courts. >> our abc family is mourning a terrible loss tonight as investigators are looking for what caused a news helicopter to crash in new jersey, killing the pilot and the photographer on board. both worked at our sister station, wpvi in philadelphia for many years. the photographer was 45 year old christopher dougherty. the pilot, 67 year old monroe smith. they were on their way back from a story when the crash happened last night in a remote part of burlington county, new jersey. the ntsb and

the faa are investigating, but the location is creating challenges for investigators. all of us at abc seven would like to send our thoughts to the families affected by this tragedy and to our colleagues at wpvi. >> hate on a middle school campus los altos school district administrators are investigating two separate anti-semitic incidents on school grounds, the latest involving the drawing of swastikas on lockers. abc seven news south bay reporter dustin dorsey explains how staff is working to create a safer environment for students. >> the los altos school district is investing dating an anti-semitic event on the campus of bloch intermediate school. after several swastikas were found drawn on lockers in the boys locker room. one of those lockers belonged to a jewish student. >> our students aren't happy that this is the community in which, or the school community in which they are in, at the beginning of the school day friday, a student told administrators he found a swastika drawn on his locker with pen for more were located on other lockers by staff. >> after they were cleaned off,

more of the hateful imagery appeared on lockers monday morning, likely said to have been drawn by the same student. >> it is important that every student, in order to learn, comes to school feeling safe, feeling respected, feeling seen, and when our environment is breached in some way which this is a breach of, that we want to make sure that kids understand their role. >> superintendent sandra mcgonagle says this is the second incident on a la isd middle school campus in as many weeks after an anti-semitic remark and gesture was made to two female jewish students two weeks ago. it comes as anti-semitic incidents increase across the u.s, according to the fbi and jews don't feel safe. a recent report by the jewish community council of the bay area finding more than 60% of bay area jews feel less safe in day to day lives. >> i know our jewish community is feeling, um, under attack. i know that our palestinian community is also feeling under attack. it's we're a microcosm

slick. i should say sutro and san jose are just fine. live doppler seven is looking quieter than this morning when we had pouring rain across parts of the bay area, but still some showers around blackhawk diablo. you will notice very light stuff looking hour by hour. some scattered showers will continue to move up from the south and wrap back around. so while you are sleeping, do expect some more wet weather to come through. and then tomorrow morning just a few more showers in the southern part of our viewing area. tomorrow afternoon you're looking at high temperatures coming up into the low to mid 60s. the storm that has been giving us providing us with the wet weather is going to be responsible for rain that is going to hammer southern california flood watches and warnings already posted for much of that area. they are looking at 5 to 10in in the foothills and the mountains through friday. some parts we're looking at 4 to 6in of rain now out west. if you are traveling los angeles, 65 degrees could be dicey with thunderstorms, flash flooding, and mudslides across
