department's marine unit removes dozens of derelict boats from the oakland estuary. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. police say the boats that were that were destroyed were identified as abandoned, but some people who live on them believe today's removal is creating an even bigger problem. >> abc seven news reporter tara campbell was there and has more. >> a crushing scene thursday at the oakland estuary. >> today we woke up to police trying to take everybody's boats. >> we are pulling out 12 boats that we have marked abandoned, and we have given proper notice and tagging to each boat, pulling out these abandoned boats is part of a multi-agency effort to clean up the estuary. >> the last time it happened was ten years ago. >> this is an effort to make the estuary a safe, fun place to come down. >> earlier this year, oakland passed an ordinance giving police and marine patrol the go ahead to also remove illegally anchored boats with people living on them. >> so what we're doing with the liveaboard boats is we're

educating them on the recent policy that's passed. >> officials say they're working on a plan to relocate the occupied boats. >> they're not being forced to move today. we haven't scheduled a date for that yet. >> like they say, we're pirates. pirates or thieves. we're not thieves. over here. >> amanda nguyen says a lot of people who live here are misunderstood. should. and she has no plans on making a move. >> they're complaining about people not having places to stay, but when they do have a place to stay, they want to destroy it. it's ridiculous. this is what i can say. how long have you lived here? more than a year. me and my husband and a couple of friends of ours lived here more than a year. >> i think that the homeless problem in the bay area is severe, and there needs to be greater opportunity for people to have housing, but living on end of life boats on the water is not a appropriate solution. brock delap is a former harbormaster and says the abandoned boats also pose an environmental threat. they

release a fuel oil into the estuary. we have fuel spills and it's again, it's just far, far more expensive to deal with these boats. after they sink. >> and so the cleanup continues, along with calls to make sure the waterway is properly patrolled. >> the marine patrol unit needs to be properly staffed. if you stop it at one, then you'll never have this problem again. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. >> the oakland police department is extending and in fact, enhancing its holiday safety plan to stop commercial burglaries by increasing the number of officers patrolling overnight. right now, this effort coincides with two destructive smash and grab incidents tuesday morning, one at the lululemon store on broadway and 25th, the other at benner automotive just around the corner. today, police released this surveillance video of a man they identified as a suspect in both break ins, the level of destruction that occurred to this business. >> just so this person could go

family that lost a son right before christmas. so i can't even imagine, she says she didn't know the family, but they live across the street from her children's school as a community member. >> she says the community needs to show up for this family. >> this was a shocking, shocking event and we're all shaken up. but we're going to show up for this family like we do and support each other as best as we can. >> reporter according to police, just before 5 p.m. on wednesday, the man was on break from delivering pizzas and parked in front of his house. a vehicle pulled up alongside him. the passenger got out and shot him multiple times. >> our officers arrived. they noticed a male had a sustained at least two gunshot wounds. he was in a vehicle in front of a home. >> the mother was inside at the time of the shooting. >> she did not see the incident occur. she heard the shot and came out and saw her son had a gunshot wound to lives walking

distance from the school where his four year old goes to school . >> it's a little dangerous, especially for our little ones, you know, they go to school there. it's kind of concerning, you know, that it was kind of after school around like 5 p.m. ish, and there was glad there was no school or anything like that. you know, oakley police haven't commented if this was a targeted shooting and they still don't have a description of any suspect or suspects in oakley on hassan abc seven news a coma firefighter wanted for stabbing his ex-girlfriend and her boyfriend this morning has been found dead in mendocino county. >> sources confirmed abc seven news that the suspect, jason gillenwater, was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in ukiah. law enforcement tracked gillenwater following the stabbing at his ex home. his ex's home in pacifica. they say he went to oakland before eventually ending up in mendocino county. the stabbings happened just before 8 a.m. at the house on naomi avenue and reina del mar avenue. abc seven news has confirmed that gillenwater was suspended from his paramedic duties last week

after being arrested for a domestic violence incident at that home. gillenwater ex-wife survived the attack and is in the hospital. her boyfriend died at the scene. >> happening now. let's take a live look at san francisco international airport and holiday travel is really picking up. tsa has screened more than 2 million people at our nation's airports every day this week. so far, more than 100 flights have experienced delays in and out of sfo, and seven have been canceled and a live look at oakland international airport. it's not nearly as busy as san francisco, but it has seen its share of delays and cancellations as well. weather and other parts of the country is being blamed on some of those delays. >> all right, so for more on the holiday travel forecast, let's bring in abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel for the details. sandhya >> yeah, and dan and ama all is quiet here. let's take a look at a live picture right now from our santa cruz camera, where it's a pretty view, a little bit of sun showing through the clouds right now and there are plenty of clouds around as we look at live doppler seven. some

showers in the southern part of our viewing area earlier in the day, right around monterey. big sur area. just the past hour or so, all in association with the storm that has drenched southern california, has caused all the severe flooding there. old man mountain down south has picked up over. 8.5in of rain in just 24 hours. flood watches and warnings are going, so if you are traveling down south, keep in mind that you might encounter some issues. numerous reports of flooding, to be precise 36 reports includes debris flows, heavy rain, flash flooding and flooding. so traveling to l.a. 64 degrees tomorrow, you're looking at some wet weather in seattle, 47 and the central u.s. chicago 46. with the rain as we head down towards the dallas area. partly sunny, 70 degrees and back east 43 in new york, down south in miami, 74 degrees and cloudy skies. i'll be back with a look at our weekend forecast coming right up ama. >> thank you sandhya. in the north bay, napa valley winemakers are toasting the 2023

vintage as possibly one of the best ever for both reds and whites. already there are lots of expectations. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard tells us lots of rain and a long growing season have produced some epic grapes. >> bells were ringing earlier this season for the 2023 grape harvest. back then, few winemakers knew how good this season was going to be. >> i was telling someone the other day that i'm not sure we'll see another vintage like this in our lifetime. i'm i feel very, as a winemaker, i feel very lucky to have experienced this vintage burgess cellars winemaker meghan zobeck says anticipation for the 23 vintage is off the charts in the napa valley for both reds and whites. >> she believes there's something special about this harvest. grapes have big energy and complexity. you just know, like when you taste it, you know you're you're just like, oh my gosh, this harvest, this is this is incredible. >> i think it's going to be one of the best vintages i've worked

in in napa by hands down. these are young vines. >> macy stubbs, dad says the cork popping news comes after one of the longest growing seasons in a decade. some grapes weren't harvested until october or november due to a cool spring and drought busting rains, which slowed the ripening process but created lots of hang time on the vine. >> so when the vines woke up in the spring about two weeks later from 2022 uh, they came out with a lot of energy. good reserves to be able to grow, you know, full canopies. >> napa valley grape growers with a membership of nearly 700, are also declaring 23 as one of the best. >> our growers are saying high quality, high yields, which is somewhat unique. um, and yeah, definitely one for the record books. these vines are now dormant for the winter, but after a challenging decade of wild fires, smoke, and epic drought, there's now something worth raising a glass tube. grape growers and winemakers this community remains adopt. they adapt. they're in farming.

found 43% of i will have a positive impact on their lives. >> about 39% say it will have a negative effect. abc seven news reporter zach fuentes explains that in the next few weeks, california lawmakers will consider several bills to regulate. i >> how concerned are you, if at all, about losing your job due to being replaced by artificial intelligence in the next five years? that's one of the questions asked in this politico morning consult poll. more than half of california voters asked fell into very concerned or somewhat concerned categories. >> it's a legitimate fear. there is no question about it, because the whole thing about ai is efficiency tsay meaning doing things faster, more accurate and a study done earlier this year by the pew research center found that in 2022, 19% of american workers were in jobs that are the most exposed to ai. some high exposure jobs included budget analysts, tax preparers, and web developers. medium exposure jobs included chief executives, veterinarians, and interior designers. low exposure jobs included barbers, child

care workers, and firefighters. regardless of the exposure, officials at different levels say they've been working to protect jobs. microsoft saying earlier this month that it will include labor unions in discussions on ai's impact to workers. the california legislature is set to vote on proposals in its next session. >> how ai is used in the hiring process shefs how ai is used used in terms of displacing workers. those are all relevant issues that we're going to really tackle over the next few years. >> one of the ways is through newly proposed legislation following the sag-aftra strikes, it would place requirements on studios as it relates to using ai to replicate a performer's likeness. state assemblyman asakura introduced it. >> some of the impacts of ai aren't so obvious, so if we can't even get movement in an industry that that the public is generally aware of, it's going to be really hard to get movement in an office environment or a warehouse environment, or at a fast food restaurant or grocery store environment. >> as officials continue to work, those things out, some tech experts encourage employees to consider embracing ai to make

paradise of hawaii. let's get this ceremony started. sdsu celebrated graduation ceremony stateside this week, but the team missed them already in hawaii for their bowl game on december 23rd in a special ceremony more than 2000 miles away from the sdsu campus. 13 players were honored and recognized for earning their bachelor's or master's degrees, including quarterback and hawaii native kevin cordero, linebacker matt tago and charlie rogers. >> it was it was getting rowdy. that was pretty fun. everyone's cheering, hooting and hollering. the whole team was there. i was lucky enough to have my family come out, so that was that was a pretty cool experience last night. since taking over as san jose state football coach brant brennan has highlighted the importance of academics and of course, graduation. >> holding the school's first football graduation at a bowl game in hawaii was a priority for coach to recognize the pride he and his staff have for their accomplishment. >> that was one of the coolest things i've ever been a part of, to be able to do it with their friends and their family and their teammates, uh, here, while

they're preparing for the bowl game, was incredibly special. it was a really, really neat night on this day. >> there were no classmates or professors, but there was family. the football family of coaches, staff and players there to celebrate a moment none of these players will forget. >> the ceremony itself is awesome, but getting to have that special with just the football team there, the guys who spend pretty much your whole your entire experience in college with and then having the family there as well, there's nothing better than that. >> i know my family wasn't here, but having all my boys here, that, uh, that we did this thing the whole season together and it was just nice to have them cheering in the background and just being there, supporting the whole time. it's a feeling that i'll never forget. and i'll cherish that moment forever. >> i now confer upon each one of you, your masters or baccalaureate degree, with all the attendant rights, responsibilities and distinctions. >> congratulations to the spartan football class of 2023, dustin dorsey, abc seven news. >> another disagreement is brewing between the forty-niners and the city of santa clara ahead of monday night's big game at levi's stadium. the team and the city reportedly cannot agree

the game physically, take a look at the live pictures from our tower cameras. beautiful post sunset views right now we're just seeing a mix of some clouds out there to overnight tonight. things are going to be changing. winter arrives tonight, the winter solstice taking place at 727, when the sun's rays will be directly over tropic of capricorn tonight. all right, so we're already seeing winter weather with that storm that brought us the wet weather yesterday. that storm is spinning off the southern california coast and just dumping rain across that part of the region. they have seen anywhere from six to over eight inches of rain. so for parts of southern california leading to some severe flooding, and they're not out of the woods yet . all is quiet here. we do have a coastal flood advisory just like the last couple of days. astronomical high tides leading to the potential for low lying flooding that's in effect until 10 a.m. tomorrow. that peak high tide is coming up shortly after seven, close to seven feet, as you will notice. so just be careful. 50s and 60s on your temperatures right now. let's

check out what you can expect tonight. winter starts at 727. these are the headlines. areas of fog in the morning. so watch out if you are traveling or even if you are commuting. tomorrow early part of the day this weekend, cold mornings, dry days. really nice looking weather is ahead for any outdoor activities you have planned. let's go hour by hour. speaking of outdoor activities, 615 in case you need to still run around, do some last minute holiday shopping. we're looking at temperatures in the 50s. i would grab your jacket before you leave because later on in the evening those temperatures dropping going towards tomorrow morning, we'll see areas of fog 40 and 50s and then higher clouds coming through, lots of sun and mild weather for the early afternoon in your morning. temperatures will range anywhere from the upper 30s in the coldest areas to our north to the upper 40s around san francisco. so areas of fog not just near the coast, but also some patchy valley fog in places like santa rosa. so something you'll need to watch out for tomorrow afternoon. it's a nice day. high temperatures above average for this time of year.

upper 50s to the mid 60s, and in case you're wondering about our next opportunity for rain, well, the current storm will remain down in southern california going into tomorrow. and then we get this breather before our next rain comes in on wednesday. it's going to bring snow to the sierra, mixing in with rain, and then really looks like another storm setting up here for following days. so we're going to be in this wet pattern i think again later on in the week. but until then we are looking at nice weather, the accuweather seven day forecast, morning fog, the sun, winter chill with us both saturday and sunday in the morning. cool afternoons. christmas is going to be crisp and really for the 40 niners. just nice weather. clouds increase wednesday we have a level one storm bringing us showers and breezy conditions. mostly cloudy for your thursday so ama and dan i don't think we have too much to complain about our weather is really quiet, nice. >> thanks andy and a reminder that you can get our live newscast, breaking news, weather and more with our abc7 bay area
