but we're going to begin tonight with a clash over retail crime in oakland. a number of thefts all caught on camera from just this week, have thrown the issue right back into the spotlight. but today, mayor shengtao and the oakland police are boasting of improvements in local shopping districts. >> abc seven news reporter tim johns is in studio now with more about a counter rally tomorrow by other local leaders. tim >> yeah, dan i'm a local resident. say they are upset we talked to numerous everyday people who live in the city, as well as prominent business owners. and despite the showing we saw today from the mayor and oakland police, they say more still needs to be done. it's a tale of two cities in oakland on thursday, mayor shengtao hosting a joint news conference with the city's police department. there, they highlighted their efforts to make the city safer, specifically talking about the recent crackdown against retail and property crime, something they say saw commercial burglaries drop from 256 this time last year to 120 now. >> the investments are starting to bear fruit as we have seen

the decrease in the property crimes in the areas that we have actually stood up on the streets of the city. >> however, those statistics are a tough sell. on sunday, colonial donuts was hit with its second armed robbery. this year, and on tuesday, the lululemon on broadway also being robbed after a thief drove through its front door with a car. that incident, happening just minutes after banner automotive down the road, says someone also broke into their shop the third time in the past three months its owner, michael benner, with some strong words for the mayor. >> maybe she should take less of a raise and try to get more police on the police force, retail and property crime in oakland has become a key rallying cry for people like carl chan. >> chan runs safe, the group behind the push to recall alameda county district attorney pamela price on friday morning. he and other business owners in the city will hold a rally calling on public leaders to do more to stop crime. >> we want to emphasize that there has to be consequences when people are committing crimes, and especially in all these many repeated offenders,

it's not just local businesses that are increasingly worried about crime either. >> we talked to many residents here on the streets and they tell us they've also had enough. that includes live on. johnson, a lifelong oakland resident who says crime is now impacting the everyday lives of everyone who lives in the city. >> all the stores are closing like they had to close target. like now we got to go all the way to emeryville and, you know, just to get basic stuff. >> both opd and mayor tao acknowledge that despite statistics, public perception is a key component of making people feel safe. >> one is too many. these are our community members. there are businesses we rely upon them and they rely upon us. now the city of oakland says it's pursuing a three pronged approach to combat crime that includes investing in the police department, strengthening the city's violence prevention initiatives, and leveraging technology to help catch criminals. >> in the studio. tonight tim johnson, abc seven news. >> all right, tim, thank you so much. and we want to make sure you get the full scope and context of public safety, where you live with the abc seven

neighborhood safety tracker, right on our website. it shows you a wide range of public safety statistics and tools. looking back over the years for san francisco, oakland and san jose, you'll find it on the front page right now at abc seven news.com. tonight a firefighter in the town of colma has been found dead, wanted for stabbing his ex-wife and her boyfriend this morning, sources confirmed to abc seven news that the suspect, jason gill, was found dead of a self inflicted gunshot wound in ukiah. >> law enforcement tracked gill water for hours all the way up into mendocino county. following the stabbing at his ex's home in pacifica. abc seven news has confirmed. gill water was suspended last week and was arrested for domestic violence. the ex-wife's boyfriend died at the scene. however, within the last half hour, our i-team's stephanie sierra is reporting the ex-wife is now out of surgery and recovering after surviving that attack back. if you know of someone who is struggling with issues, including domestic violence, mental health, substance abuse

or something else, there is help out there for you. find local resources at abc seven news.com slash. take action happening now . >> there's all kinds of wild weather right now, particularly in central and southern california. the storms dumped so much rain. there was widespread flooding in santa barbara. streets looked more like raging rivers with all the rushing water. the. the rain started last night and it just kept coming. numerous roads were blocked and drivers decided to try to navigate them anyway. and of course some got stuck in the water. >> it didn't look that bad 30 minutes ago. halfway through, car just turns off, so always a good time. >> at one point the rain was coming down in some spots at a rate of three inches per hour. there are places in the los angeles area that saw as much as six inches of rain. in what the national weather service is calling a once in 500 years event, wild, and we have to check with abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel about all of this. yeah,

hopefully the roads won't be too messy for people driving this weekend. sandhya. >> yeah, i think tomorrow is still a concern, but after that things will be okay. so dan and emma, some parts of southern california getting six to 8.5in of rain in just 24 hours. it has been pouring there for hours. take a look at live pictures from our tower cameras here. it is just really peaceful and beautiful. so getting out of the bay area you're fine. area of low pressure that brought us all the stormy weather yesterday has shifted into southern california, where they have been dealing with the thunderstorms, the rain, the flooding threat continues, flood watches and warnings are still going through friday and even into early saturday morning. dense fog advisory for the central valley includes part of solano county, so that is going to be concerning if you are traveling through that area tomorrow, 62 degrees in san francisco tomorrow, la 61 with the rain, vegas 59. you're looking at showers. seattle as well, 47 degrees. if you're traveling to the midwest. chicago 45. watch out for the rain. could see some delays there. and in san antonio

increase in in wastewater detection of covid nationally and locally. >> ucsf's doctor peter chin-hong is referring to covid and says hospitalization and deaths involving the virus are also up. thursday i spoke with doctor chin-hong and stanford's doctor, dean winslow, about covid. both are strong supporters of covid, flu and rsv vaccines and both brought up the new jn1 covid variant, said omicron subvariant . >> and it. it appears to be very , very transmissible, although you know, it doesn't appear to cause more severe disease, you know, than earlier variants did. >> millions of people are traveling this christmas holiday , and that means millions of people going through airports and crowding in on planes so they can get to family and friends and other areas. >> right now, the biggest risk of covid is in the midwest. um, but we're seeing it nationally as well. and and the new variant , dot one is most common in the

east coast, but it's spreading across the country. sort of uniform widely. >> as to wearing a mask, doctor winslow is also a pilot and former air force flight surgeon. >> the air is very clean, you know, again, because the hvac systems in modern, uh, aircraft, you know, have very, very high turnover rates. they even use hepa filtration. so actually being on the airliner itself is relatively low risk. but of course, you know, again, you've got to walk through the terminal through the tsa lines and through that, you know, the often crowded jetway, the plane getting off the plane, public transit, those are high risk areas. >> the other little bit of advice, which you know, i'd like to give, you know, your listeners, is that the little vents that are over your seat in a commercial airliner, they're called gaspar fans. >> and i strongly recommend people actually turn them open all the way. >> a little technique that may cool things down, but will help increase airflow and could benefit you when it comes to staying healthy. j.r. stone, abc

seven news new developments with the ongoing pollution problems in richmond, we know about the air issues. >> now there's something else. chemicals known to cause cancer were found in the soil of an old dry cleaning business on barrett avenue. it occupied the spot from 1960 to 2001. richmond's pollution problem started late last month with flaring at the chevron refinery, which has now happened multiple times. then earlier this month, a stench started coming from a wastewater treatment. it was so bad the mayor held an emergency meeting last week building a better bay area. >> sometimes means taking big risks and tonight we're spotlighting a breakthrough and a big risk in san francisco. one developer is hoping $1 billion investment will encourage workers to return to downtown san francisco. one developer is hoping that that investment will inject a life back into downtown . when he bought the iconic transit pyramid and tells abc seven news insider phil matier he believes in the city and its ability to bounce back.

ohhh yesss. ♪ us the roof. all of this lasting several minutes. the shooting left at least 14 people dead and 25 others wounded, investigated found the gunman's body on a sidewalk. they believe he took his own life. jesus christ shooting happened right in the heart of the czech republic's capital city and sent people running for cover. some ran across the historic charles bridge, others huddled on a rooftop hoping to stay out of sight. it was a couple of uh- uh- banks. >> i didn't even realize. it's a it's a shooting. then uh- suddenly there were students and teachers running. >> investigators say the gunman is a 24 year old student, was a 24 year old student at the

university. as far as motive, they said he was, quote, inspired by another heinous act elsewhere in the world. >> back here at home tonight, a family dog is back safe with its owners after a really scary fall in san francisco. fire crews rushed out to the water below fort mason. they say the dog fell down the trail roughly 80ft and was critically injured. two rescue boats quickly rescued the dog. but the good news tonight is the dog is now recovering well with its owners, so fingers crossed some llama drama tonight in the sierra. the chp really is prepared for just about anything . officers had to corral a llama that was roaming westbound interstate 80 at donner summit challenger had gotten out and officers eventually caught up with him. the llama was then returned to its rightful owner. >> the fda is issuing a warning to consumers to not use a counterfeit ozempic called semaglutide. the agency says it's aware of thousands of units of the product for somehow entering into the u.s. supply chain. the fda has identified

sun and clouds, upper 50s to low 60s. santa is not going to have any problems with the deliveries on live doppler seven. you can see some clouds are still lingering earlier, there were a few showers between big sur and monterey, but that's as far north as they came from southern california. dense fog advisory in effect for solano county until 11 a.m. this is where visibility could drop to a quarter mile or less, so watch out overnight tonight. going into tomorrow morning, i would not be surprised if the weather service expands the dense fog advisory to include the north bay, because you will notice, novato is already down to a quarter mile, half mile in santa rosa, napa just over a mile. be careful tomorrow morning if you're getting away or if you are commuting. first thing in the morning. temperatures in the 40s and 50s. fog is going to be around and then when the fog gets replaced by just higher clouds passing through, it's going to be a nice looking day. by early afternoon. a lot like today, upper 50s to mid 60s, mild lower than where you should be for this time of year. in case you want to get outside and
