minneapolis, st. paul airport. already packed. so many people are making their trips. let's begin with transportation correspondent gio benitez at george bush international airport in my home town of houston. good morning, gio. >> reporter: it is your houston, michael. good morning. it's been looking very, very good across the country over the past few days. now today is going to be another busy day. this one is off to newark later this morning. that one is austin. that one to cancun. we have another to orlando. there is a lot happening just days ahead of christmas. this morning the travel rush for christmas is far from over. as millions hit the skies before the weekend, the tsa screening about 5 million people between wednesday and thursday. that number is sure to jump today for what is expected to be a record breaking holiday period, the most travellers ever. >> last year we didn't even take off.

we were just glad to be able to get off the first one and get out. >> reporter: incredibly the extreme weather in the west causing very few cancellations, but hundreds of delays. >> so far from what i hear it's very good. never know. weather is weather. >> reporter: it's incredibly busy for the workers you can see like flight attendants and pilots. united airlines took gma behind the scenes to its nerve center. when you think about last week versus today, what's the difference? >> i would say mostly more customers, but also larger aircraft that are not usually there. coordinations as well. >> reporter: they are doing such great work in that virtual ramp tower there. you know i'm always looking at flight cancellations and delays

for you. right now this morning it is looking incredibly smooth. we aren't seeing many cancellations or delays at all. keep watching that weather. if you can move your flight earlier, that is even better. that will give you a chance to get ahead of that weather. try to get on that plane as early as possible. >> that's right. get out early if you can, gio. the federal government, they're taking a closer look at the frequent flyer plan, right? >> reporter: yeah. they just announced this. this is the department of transportation. they are investigating the airline loyalty programs. they want to look at those loyalty programs because they want to make sure they aren't defective or unfair. they will be looking at those, specifically those award tickets. those are the ones you book with miles that you earn when you fly so much. they want to make sure those policies are all transparent. michael? >> thank you, gio. now to the roads. we have what you need to know to make your travel as smooth as possible. good morning. >> lot of people fearing that travel crush is about to arrive

very soon. a lot more people expected to hit these roads behind us. you can see the freeways around los angeles. around the country 104 million people will be driving. expected to leave more than 15 miles from their home between christmas and new year. this is the busiest since aaa started tracking travel more than 20 years ago. more than 2.5 million more people are traveling this year versus last year. experts say the best way to avoid the traffic is to head out before noon. wait until gma is over. you can say this is good news. gas prices are roughly about the same this year compared to the last holiday season. the national gas price right now is $3.12. michael? >> thank you, zoreen. whit? >> that storm we've been talking about slamming the west coast is

on the move threatening to disrupt holiday travel for millions. ginger is tracking that. >> whit, instead of rocking around the christmas tree, they are sloshing around the christmas tree. santa barbara, california, had more than 3 inches of rain in less than an hour. that is a month's worth and more, by a half inch. unbelievable numbers. some of the other places, san luis nearly 16 inch, ventura county 13.7 inches. now that storm is moving over to the desert pushing toward phoenix, tucson. flood watches are up. we are going to watch this thing move through with up to 20 inches of snow in the southern rockies. then it's about the severe storms. christmas eve you could see tornados, damaging winds from arkansas, parts of oklahoma, texas, louisiana and mississippi. heads up there. it's going to be wet, warm. this is your christmas outlook. i have to say, guys, we are at the point where we've had the least amount of snow cover on record. we've had these records for about 20 years. currently 13.2%. not a white christmas. whit? >> all right, ginger. thank you.

deborah? >> whit, thank you. this morning law enforcement is on alert for a heightened threat environment. reporting a disturbing rise in terror threats this holiday season. pierre thomas joins us with the latest on this. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: good morning, deborah. law enforcement has been warning that right now is an especially dangerous moment. we have an exclusive interview with a top official on the front lines, and she's bluntly telling us what she's seeing has her focused and very concerned. this morning with three days before christmas, law enforcement on alert, reporting the most challenging threat environment since 9/11. many of the threats tied to the on going war between israel and hamas. >> since october 7th, the fbi has received more than 1,800 reports of threats or other types of tips or leads that are somehow related to or have a relationship with the current conflict in israel and gaza.

>> reporter: the fbi now has 100 active full scale investigations tied to that middle east conflict. officials also reporting a spike in threats to public officials agents and police now investigating violent threats against the colorado supreme court after its ruling, disqualifying former president trump from running for office citing his alleged role in the january 6th insurrection. trump is expected to appeal that ruling to the u.s. supreme court as soon as next week. deputy attorney general telling me in an abc news exclusive, public officials are at a level they've never seen before. >> what we've seen is an unprecedented rise in threats to public officials across the board. just this week, pierre, we've had cases involving threats to kill fbi agent, a supreme court justice and three presidential candidates. >> reporter: to be clear, monaco and other top law enforcement officials including the fbi director, are saying there's no reason to panic, but all of us should be vigilant for the

certifying joe biden's legitimate victory. the paper says it reviewed a recording of the call where trump in the report told the two bore members, quote, we can't let these people take our country away from us. he and the republican party chair promised to get them attorneys if they went along with the demand to sign the certification. abc news has not independently confirmed the report, and the detroit news has not released the audio of the reported call. the trump campaign doesn't deny the reporting. a spokes person telling abc news trump's actions, quote, were taken in furtherance of his duty as president to ensure election integrity. trump is already facing four federal charges for what special counsel jack smith called a, quote, conspiracy to overturn the legitimate results of the 2020 presidential election by using knowingly false claims of election fraud. on thursday, trump's former lawyer, rudy giuliani, declared bankruptcy.

it's the latest chapter in a dramatic fall for the man once dubbed america's mayor. >> this is the greatest mayor our city has ever had. rudy, come on up here. >> reporter: now, under the weight of a mountain of debt, giuliani is filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. in addition to millions of dollars in other debt, giuliani owes two georgia poll workers he falsely accused of ballot fraud $148 million. a judge saying that ruby freeman and shaye moss could start to collect immediately. >> i don't regret anything. >> reporter: like trump, republican party chair mcdaniel doesn't deny this call in which she is heard telling those local officials she will get them an attorney if they go along with what trump was demanding. telling the detroit news, quote, what i said publicly and repeatedly at the time is there was ample evidence that warranted an audit. michael? >> seems to be something new every day, jon. thank you very much for that.

now we'll turn to the crisis at the border. house speaker mike johnson demanding the president take executive action to stem the surge of crossings which have reached record breaking numbers this week. our senior congressional correspondent rachel scott is here in the studio with the latest. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: michael, good morning. the crisis at the border is on intensifying. the number of migrants crossing is reaching historic numbers, but washington has been at a stand still, deeply divided over how to address this. house speaker mike johnson sending a letter to president biden trying to ramp up pressure here writing that the crisis at our southern border has deteriorated and action can no longer wait and must start now, and it must start with you. johnson is urging president biden to resume construction on the border wall and reinstate the so called remain in mexico policy, requiring some asylum seekers to be sent back to mexico during immigration proceedings. that's a nonstarter for the president. the white house has acknowledged the surge at the border. we are seeing the highest number of migrants apprehended in decades. more than 12,000 monday, 10,000 tuesday and another 10,000 on

wednesday. now democrats and republicans were trying to figure out a path forward on border security, but they left town without a deal. the issue will be top of mind when they return in january. they will have a lot on their plate. congress will also consider aid to israel and ukraine and they face two separate deadlines to avert a government shutdown. the senate is returning january 8th, house january 9th. they'll have just over a week to get it all done. deborah. >> rachel, always appreciate your reporting. turning now to the price of mailing letters and packages set to go up next month. the usps is raising the cost of stamps and shipping. morgan norwood is here with all the details. good morning, morgan. >> reporter: if you're recovering from sticker shock after sending out those holiday cards you might want to stock up on forever stamps. starting january 1st the price is going up again. fifth hike in two years. this time from $0.66 to $0.68.

it's not just stamps either. next year it will cost you more to send gifts. package shipping costs will rise nearly 6%. these hikes are part of a ten-year plan to raise rates to help the u.s. postal service recover from plunging profits and nearly $160 billion loss. part of the cost cutting measures have meant slower deliveries. these hikes are even worse for folks in states like alaska, hawaii and territories. they're facing an increase of more than 9% with officials asking the post master to reconsider this saying no state, including alaska, should be punished by our own federal government because of our geography. >> all right. thank you very much morgan. now to baseball news. l.a. lodgers strike again landing arguably the most coveted free agent since shoei ohtani. >> good morning, michael. after shoehi ohtani,

was the most coveted free agent in baseball and he hasn't thrown a single pitch in an mlb game. like ohtani, yamamoto will receive an insane amount of money from the l.a. dodger. how's 12 years, $325 million? that sound good to michael and me, too. the biggest contract ever for a pitcher. combine that money with ohtani's deal, the dodgers have committed over $1 billion to two players. by all accounts, yamamoto is worth it. he can throw the ball 99 miles per hour. he's completely dominated the japanese league. one he became available here, mlb teams were chomping at the bit to sign him. yankees reportedly offered him $300 million. mets had a similar offer to the dodgers. but the dodgers were able to get it done thanks to ohtani deferring part of his salary. $68 million per year. he said when he signed he would take a low up front salary so the dodgers could sign more players. they went on and signed the most exciting pitching prospect in years. the dodgers are loaded.

confirmed the suspect in this case, jason gillenwater, took his own life in ukiah after he fled from authorities after that attack, gillenwater was acoma firefighter law enforcement tracked him for hours all the way to mendocino county after he stabbed his ex-wife and her boyfriend. the woman survived the attack, but the boyfriend did not. we have since learned gillenwater was suspended last week and arrested for domestic violence. sue >> all right. we are headed to san rafael. we'll take a look there. the fog is lifting, but you can see it's definitely still a factor. we have fog advisories for the carquinez bridge and the bay bridge. and most of the north bay at this hour. otherwise, we're looking at pretty light traffic conditions. >> thank you. sue. meteorologist drew toma has a quick look

that's scheduled for next week. it's dividing the victims' families. kayna whitworth joins us with more. good morning. >> reporter: michael, good morning. it is. the university of idaho says no request to retain the house was made by the defense or the prosecution. but the prosecution has now filed a motion for a date to be set in this long awaited trial. this morning a new development in the idaho college murder case. prosecutors now pushing the judge to set a trial date for the summer of 2024 in a new filing arguing it t would allow the expected six-week trial to happen while nearby schools are closed and students are away. this comes as lead prosecutor bill thompson took what was likely his last walk through of the home on king road where four students were killed last year. the house, set to be demolished thursday. that decision dividing the victims' families. the goncalves saying it could be helpful at trial.

>> the family thinks it has evidence there and should not be destroyed. i just can't understand why you wouldn't leave the house there. what's good for the university of idaho is to properly demolish the place. out of sight, out of mind. >> reporter: but for victim ethan chapin's family, the bare land will give closure. they say it is good for the university, the students, including our own kids and the community of moscow. ethan had been visiting his girlfriend the night that the students were killed in november 2022. prosecutors claim bryan kohberger stabbed them to death. the judge, who entered a not guilty plea on kohberger's

behalf, now denying his request to get the charges against him thrown out. >> the judge ruled that the state has followed the proper law and the proper procedure in indicting mr. kohberger through the grand jury process. >> reporter: so now in addition to a trial date, prosecutors are also asking the judge to set a status conference and set deadlines for multiple things like pretrial motions and the completion of discovery. certainly, guys, that is something the goncalves family was happy to hear. they feel like they are on the right path towards justice here. >> i am sure they are happy to see that, kayna. thank you very much. let's bring in abc news chief legal analyst dan abrams. dan, we heard about the division between the families if the house should be demolished or not. are the prosecutors and defense on the same page when it comes to the demolition? >> at this point they are, both the prosecution and defense have said they're okay with moving forward with the case without the house. why?

well, in part because the fbi has already recreated the house. they've created a model that could be used in the context of the trial. and that's typically what would happen in a trial anyway. from the purely legal perspective, it seems both sides are in agreement. >> at this point, is there anything some of these families can do to stop the demolition from happening? >> in theory, they could file a lawsuit. right? that would be expensive and would be a long shot. remember, this is private property. this belonged to someone who donated it to the university. the university owns it. right? so the idea they're going to be able to stop an entity which owns a piece of property from demolishing their own property when both the prosecution and defense have said we're ready to move forward without it, it would be a real long shot. i don't think we're going to see it. although you never know if something is filed at the last minute. >> one of the families raises a good point. in other high profile murder cases, the murdaugh case, oj simpson case, jurors made a trip to the crime scene. is that something they're going to compromise?

welcome back. the fda this morning is sounding the alarm about counterfeit ozempic that's been found in the u.s. drug supply as researchers explore new uses for drugs like ozempic, wegovy and mounjaro which have been approved to treat obesity. our medical correspondent dr. darien sutton is here to break it down. dr. sutton, important information because so many people using these. tell us about the warning. >> this is federal health agency

seized thousands of counterfeit ozempic products which is so important. there's already been five adverse events. thankfully the events seem to be mild and are nausea, vomiting. abdominal discomfort. it's a reminder to retailers, to pharmacists, to consumers to make sure they check their products to make sure they're legitimate. there's a lot number that can be seen, we posted it on the screen. you can check on the fda website. double check. if you see abnormalities in the labeling or grammar or spelling mistakes, that's a reason you should have a high level of suspicion and make sure those medications are legitimate. >> we know it treats type ii diabetes, obesity. there are other things they're looking into, to see if they can help. what about addiction? >> this is a fascinating part of the science, understanding how cravings are affected. we've known historically when this medication has been used, those patients who use it have a

decrease in food noise that constant internal chatter or preoccupation with food. we found areas of the brain that don't just affect that craving but other cravings such as alcohol use disorder that affects 30 million americans. what they found in smaller studies is those who use this medication have reduced cravings. it doesn't stop there, michael. there are other signs that this might be beneficial in the treatment of compulsions even nail biting and gambling which illuminate the complexity of obesity and cravings in the brain. >> what about other case uses like polycystic ovarian syndrome or cardiovascular disease? >> there's some benefits. polycystic ovarian syndrome is where the testosterone that lead to abnormal hair growth, acne and is the leading cause of infertility. smaller studies they found those who use this reported more regular periods which would suggest this medication can

better control polycystic ovarian syndrome. another sign this medication affects hormone balance, obesity. again, another factor in that complexity of weight gain and obesity. >> give us a reality check here. all these benefits that we're talking about here, what's the timeline before we get a sense of just how effective this drug is be and what don't we know about things like ozempic? >> the timeline is years to be honest with you, for context. it took six years for this to be approved for what it was originally approved for, diabetes. so we'll likely have to wait. we'll want to see what are the side effects, what are the risks. it will be quite sometime before we see additional results. >> talk to your doctor. that's why we're talking to you. turning now to the rebuilding of notre dame, the french cathedral that was nearly destroyed by a devastating fire back in 2019. james longman has been following the progress of the reconstruction of this historical land mark. good morning, james. >> reporter: good morning, deborah. the french have just witnessed quite a moment. we all remember when the spire of notre dame fell through the building during that fire back in 2019. the new one has been rebuilt. it is back on top of the building.

you can see it there shrouded in scaffolding at the moment. we had a chance to climb right to the top of it. it has been literally a military plan, getting this church back up and running, open to visitors next year. the changes so far have been spectacular. when notre dame caught fire in 2019, millions watched a piece of history burn. an international treasure nearly destroyed. the challenge to rebuild it huge. i saw the scale of damage in early 2021. the massive hole in the roof still wide open. but now just a year til completion, the finish line is in sight. you can see the spire. we climb our way towards the very top of the new spire. they're doing stonework here. this is all completely new. it was too destroyed to recover. and this woodwork, the beams that were freshly laid, you can see that bunch of flowers. that was a gift from the carpenters to say they are done with this part. hundreds of feet up, the scale of this project is clear. here we are right on the top of the notre dame.

look at this view. it's extraordinary. the spire is back. i mean, those images when the church when it was on fire, it sent shock waves all over the world. it was a trauma for france. it's back now, standing tall over the city, as the rebirth. how do you feel when you see it? >> i feel very happy, very proud. proud for all the workers. >> reporter: americans gave a large group of carpenters who came. they used ancient techniques to build the woodwork that forms part of the roof and the spire. phillip is head of restoration. inside the changes are miraculous. that hole in the roof closed back up and tidy. hundreds of years of dirt cleaned from the walls to brighten every surface. 2,000 specialists have worked on this project, carpenters, stone makers, metal workers all

working around the clock to meet next year's deadline. the stunning stained glass window cleaned and back to its former glory. this is the most sacred part of the church now, the altar. you may remember in the days after the fire, those extraordinary images of the cross down next to the altar with the debris around it. now look at it. the cross is back up, waiting to be unveiled. now right on top of that spire is the new weather vane, a national symbol of france. the old was one too damaged to restore so this is a new design. inside it, a fragment of the relic most associated with notre dame, part of the crown that christians believe jesus wore when he was on the cross. alongside that, names of everyone who worked on this project. they say it has to be done by december 8th next year. that's the date set in stone. guys? >> all right, james. what a project that is. so much history. thank you for bringing that to us.
