the biggest, busiest travel days of the year, and many of those travelers came ready for it. >> what were you preparing yourself for? >> a total mess, a total jam, um, people everywhere. >> if she had been here almost a year ago, that's what she would have seen. crowds of people impacted by the southwest airlines meltdown. rows of luggage taking up large spaces of the baggage claim area. but friday afternoon, even though the airport was far from empty, the crowds were still lighter than expected and pleasantly surprised. >> pleasantly surprised. >> even commutes to the airport were relatively calm for many very clear traffic, and the roads were all in very good shape. >> no road rage, everyone's being behaving very well. it's good to see that for the holidays. >> still, airport officials say everyone should stay prepared and leave plenty of time. >> holidays are falling neatly on a monday, so that leads to some long weekends, so we expect to see fridays being busy and then probably monday or tuesday. >> some important tips before heading to the airport. wait to wrap or bag up holiday gifts you may be taking to tsa may have to unwrap them for inspection. arrive early to allow yourself plenty of time in case crowds

other parts of downtown san francisco, embarcadero center merchants have really been struggling economically as part of our efforts to build a better bay area. this afternoon, we're looking at how a possible solution to bring business back is actually working, and the embarcadero center is the case study. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn joining us with the story now, suzanne vacant, a vibrant program took empty storefronts and brought in small business pop ups to operate rent free with the hope that it would inject life back into downtown. >> now, many businesses came into the embarcadero center, so how is it going? well, it's only been a few months, but there are promising signs even as other businesses close up shop. >> oh my goodness. okay, so i got my favorite pieces. i got the rum nugget. so many people love see's candies in the embarcadero center, especially around the holidays. i bought, you know, six boxes for everybody. you know, in new york. >> lisa semeraro got word that the beloved store plans to close on december 24th. she was disappointed, but not surprised.

it's slow traffic. >> it's, you know, covid lots people working from home. >> mayor london breed launched the vacant vibrant program to help revive downtown san francisco. so the plan offers pop ups, three months free rent to operate out of empty storefronts. devils teeth bakery in embarcadero one is a popular place and have you ever had a vegan donut before then there's wacky donuts in embarcadero four and turanga, a senegalese restaurant also in embarcadero four. i got the mayfair bowl. >> i asked for a little extra spice. it's a vegan stew on rice and it smells delicious. >> even as places like see's candies closes, some hope the vacant vibrant program will help breathe new life into the area. the first phase of the program is wrapping up, and several businesses say they want to stay on a while longer. >> three months it's been a blur, but now i'm at a point where i'm actually working in

negotiations to extend my lease. just seeing that potential for that old, um, sf coming back is definitely inspiring. >> we'd love to stay. nafy flatley owns turanga. we would extend it until february so we can have the full three months. and then so after the february or maybe a little bit before february, we will sit down and then kind of look at, you know, the numbers, how sell has been, how just the experience overall has been for all of us. >> we reached out to the vacant vibrant program director, sf new deal. they shared this reaction saying quote, we are excited and encouraged to report that our vacant a vibrant activators and property owners are engaged in productive conversations regarding lease extensions out of respect for ongoing discussions, we were not able to share details at this time, but we anticipate that almost all of the nine locations will be continuing beyond our initial three month pop up activation terms. the owner of turanga tells me that of the four towers in the embarcadero center, embarcadero four has the highest percentage percentage of workers returning to the office. more

>> abc7 news reporter lyanne melendez looked into this problem. she joins us now. i had no idea the numbers shook out like that. >> really. and you can't believe how many women who are unhoused i meet every day and they tell me i will never go to a shelter with. you know, men they're very concerned. for their safety, for their safety and well-being. correct. and, you know, when you think about it, it makes sense because 80% of women who are unhoused reported domestic abuse or violence as a cause of their homelessness. so it comes as no surprise that many say they don't feel comfortable being in a shelter with men who homeless women in san francisco face different challenges than men living on the streets. >> it's scary being a woman at any time, but i mean, that's that doesn't sound right. that shouldn't be a thing. but it is. >> and do you get harassed? of course. >> attacked. of course. um, i just i carry mace with me and just try not to instigate

problems. >> while some women and transgender people have no choice but to stay in one of the 48 coed shelters in the city, there are a lot of them who don't feel safe there and would rather live outside. >> as women, we don't feel safe in a coed shelter because men, they're not watched. they're not taken care of. so many are labeled to go over to the women's side and do whatever they want. >> lauren smith has been homeless for 15 years and moved here from los angeles three months ago. she's currently staying at this drop in center for women, run by community forward sf. it's where hospitals send some unhoused patients once they are released, like this woman who was dropped off in a cab. a staff member came out to help her. the drop in center has no beds, only 30 reclining chairs. still, lawrence says she'll take that over a bed at any covid facility in here. >> you can be safe in here. it's only for women. >> community forward. s.f. knows that sleeping in a reclining chair for three months is not

ideal. >> however, because of our waitlist and lack of options, folks end up staying longer. >> longer because 41% of those in san francisco who are homeless identify as women. that's more than 3000 people. even more startling is that the city has only enough drop in centers, beds and transitional housing for only 5% of them. besides their drop in center at one location under the freeway, community forward also has 56 beds in their transitional housing facility in the south of market area. their solution would be to combine both services at one single facility, while tripling the number of beds. a workforce development division would also be added. los angeles has something similar, called the women's center, a bond measure appearing on the march ballot will help fund the proposed center in san francisco as part of a broader $300 million affordable housing measure. we're the only women

only drop in open 24 over seven. >> um, yeah. so if you need like a shower, food, food. meanwhile, community protests have continues to reach out to women in the tenderloin and soma to let them know there is a place for them to sleep. >> where do you sleep at night? >> i kind of wherever that's like a huge part of it too. like sleeping. like, you know, like sometimes you just go so long without sleeping. like you don't know what to do and, like you, maybe you get on the bart and you fall asleep. and of course, you wake up to, like, police. >> the number of shelters for women only is so low. i mean are you ever discouraged? >> you can't do this work if you don't have hope. you have to hold on to hope that we are going to do better and it's hope of our city. we want our city to be better for. >> now that organization, along with a few other nonprofits that

deal with helping women have come together to form the women's housing coalition. so instead of each of them doing their own thing, they share information and make referrals to serve the needs of each person who identifies as a woman. and that's one thing that you know, the people criticize about the city, that they're really not coordinated. well, these people are because. so, for instance, a woman say, for example, have has issues with domestic violence. they know where to send her. >> well, coordination is really needed because we've had a lot of agencies out there. right. all right. thank you. liane >> well, coming up and the four at four using ai to predict when you are going to die. oh actually, yeah, that's really scary. and the rising cost of the 12 days of christmas does anyone really want six geese laying

purposes only because predicting one's death is so funny. yeah anyway, it should not be considered definitive. dan, you and i have a running gag about what your goal is based on our respective diets. you want to let the audience know how that is? >> yeah, we poke fun. i have a pretty good diet, actually, but i'm not as hardcore as larry as he doesn't let any sugar pass his lips. and my joke with him is that, you know, larry, all i have to do. you've deprived yourself all these years. all i have to do is live one day longer than you and i win. so that's true. so that's my goal. >> dan. so i mean, you know, that works in your favor. >> yeah. that's true. my dad turning 90 next month actually. but but you know this is all interesting. and i've actually gone online and done those little things on what your life expectancy is. it's always great to hear you're going to live to 95 or 100. nobody wants to find out. they're going to live, you know, five years from where they are. yeah, that's for sure. >> um, did you check mine also?

from all over the world, taking part today. abc news correspondent james longman shows the work that's been done exactly one year before it's planned reopening. reporter. when notre dame caught fire in 2019, millions watched a piece of history burn an international treasure nearly destroyed the challenge to rebuild it. >> huge. i saw the scale of the damage in early 2021. the massive hole in the roof still wide open. but now, just a year till completion on the finish line is in sight and you can see the spire. we climb our way

towards the very top of the new spire. you can see the stonework here. this is all completely new. it was too destroyed to recover. and this woodwork, the beams have all been freshly laid. and you can see that bunch of flowers. that's a gift from the carpenters to say that they're done with this part. hundreds of feet up the scale of this colossal project is clear. and here we are, right on the top of notre dame de paris. i mean, take a look at this view. it's extraordinary. and the spire is back. i mean, those images, when the spire initially crumbled down into the church, when it was on fire, they sent shockwaves all over the world. and it was a trauma for france. it being back now, standing tall over the city. it's a rebirth. how do you feel when you see it? >> i feel very happy, very proud. proud for all the companions, all the workers which work with the enthusiasm. >> americans were part of a large group of carpenters that came and they used really ancient techniques to rebuild the woodwork that forms most of

the part of the roof and the spire. philipp jost is head of restoration inside, the changes are miraculous. that hole in the roof closed back up entirely. hundreds of years of dirt cleaned from the walls to brighten every surface. 2000 specialists have worked on this project joiners, carpenters, stonemasons, artists and metal workers all working around the clock to make next year's deadline. the stunning rose stained glass window cleaned and back to its former glory. this is the most sacred part of the church. now the altar and you'll remember in the days after the fire, those extraordinary images of the cross down next. altar with the debris all around it. we'll now look at it. the cross is back up, waiting to be unveiled. the spire back on top of notre dame de paris is the christmas present. the french were waiting for. but this cathedral won't be fully open until december of next year. james longman abc news in paris. >> you know, we were just saying how remarkable it was that they

with the oakland recycles team to learn more. it's our favorite time of year. >> popping bubbles not really. opening presents. figuring out what to do do after the holiday to get rid of all this stuff. and luckily we have marlon, rebecca here to help us out. hello to both of you. hello. all right. i'm i'm sitting next to the devil because when it comes to recycling, this. isn't it, is it? no so you're telling me this cannot go into our recycling bins? no. so what. am i supposed to do with it? >> most of that will. i attended to go into either trash, preferably, um. it'll go down to the landfill. um, we understand this, as you called it. the devil. but um, it's the devil with a very satisfying

necessity. >> yeah, yeah, i would say play with it. >> and then throw it away. >> so you have all this wrapping paper, right? it's been strewn about your place. and then what do you do with it? >> so, um, your wrapping paper, you want to either put it directly into your recycle cart if you need to contain it while you're cleaning up your living room, use a paper bag. we don't want any plastic bags in the recycling ever. not during the holidays, not during any time of year. so if you need a bag to bag it up, use paper bags. >> is there ever a circumstance where the wrapping paper cannot be recycled? >> um, like, what if there's glitter all over it? >> or other accouterments that is a great, great question, and we like to hear that it will not affect it in the long run. >> is recyclable is not contaminated with food. >> okay, so this is a thumbs up. i'm happy to hear that after we've gone through this. bubble wrap situation, what is

going on with this? >> we got boxes. everything has to come in a box. unfortunate for people is they have a container this big. they have a box this big. so now what do we do? we can't stuff it down and we can't just leave it on top. our best recommendation for our our our city is, if possible, get it down to a three by three. put it all together, bundle it up, get a little twine to go in it, and then just set it on top by doing that, it also helps clearing out the area. it doesn't go just anywhere where it's just not sitting on top of the container flying out because of the weather or any other factors to go with it. and it helps just moving along, getting all the trucks and everything moving down the street. this is the best recommendation we could give out to just anybody that's doing it. for any recycling center. this is number one key, just something simple as this. what about our trees? >> okay, great. so um, starting. on december 26th through january

12th, you want to take all your ornaments, all your lights off your trees, the stand to. and then you can put your christmas tree out next to your compost cart for the three weeks following christmas this year, because christmas falls on a monday every pickup day that week will be one day later. so if you're normally set your stuff out at the curb on monday, you're setting it out on tuesday and so on throughout the week. and the same is true. new year's falls on a monday, so all service that week will also be pushed back by a day. >> and then just one add tidbit that i've learned as we go out into the community. your oil. because you're cooking a lot during the holidays, we are telling people wait and please, please. this is important. wait till it's cool off and then add it into your compost bin. it's your com it's your compost bin. >> it actually helps to, you know, biodegrade everything. so wow, can i just pop another bubble? >> yeah. >> please do it. definitely. >> it's i'm listening to you.
