actors playing them happen to have autism. never before have openly autistic performers played autistic characters on broadway. let's go check it out. stepping out onto the big stage. >> hi, guys. >> hi. >> reporter: the cast waiting for us. >> you come bounding out in the very beginning before the show. i mean, people are caught off guard. you come out and announce who you are. >> hi. [ applause ] >> there's a saying if you've met one autistic person, you have met one autistic person. >> you are now meeting seven autistic people. [ cheers and applause ] >> reporter: you declare, we have autism. why is that important, liam? >> in that moment for the seven of us it's really a celebration of the fact that, like, we are here, we're doing something groundbreaking as autistic performers playing autistic characters on stage and a moment before any of the show starts to kind of just celebrate that, it's not us as our characters, if this is us we'll do the show

for you. >> what feels so special to me about having this sort of, like, platform in a way is just how many people rear now able to connect with who i've never seen themselves on a stage and see themselves in us. >> it's so liberating not only to, like show the world, like, yeah, i am an autistic person. i am an autistic actor and also so freeing to be myself on stage and it's great. >> reporter: the idea came from a documentary of the same name focusing on a group of teens preparing for their first springformal. >> the show is based on thing that is actually happened but parts have embellished for dramatic purposes. you have to spice things up in ohio. ♪ >> this is it. ♪ one dress to rule them all ♪

>> reporter: the songs try to teach what life with autism is like. ♪ there are places i need to be ♪ ♪ i mean that literally ♪ ♪ most of the spaces that i want to get to ♪ ♪ were not designed for me ♪ >> reporter: amelia fay on the power of the music. is there a song, one that really resonates with you? >> of course, like i'm bias because it's my song. i love "slow dancing." it just makes me feel like it's a song oozing with love and feel so nurtured. ♪ when he takes me in his arms slow dancing ♪ ♪ he holes me titghtly like he'l never let me go ♪ >> that's great. that's great. ♪ johnny, we have so much in common ♪ ♪ in common, i still want to curl up ♪ ♪ maybe this won't end in disaster but i'm going to try ♪
