captioned by los angeles distribution and broadcasting, inc. two children are dead and a suspect is on the run. following a hit and run crash in antioch. good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm dion lim. the search continues for a driver involved in a fatal hit and run crash in antioch that killed a 12 year old and his 13 year old brother. they were on their way home with dad and lived just a few blocks away from the scene of the accident. abc seven news reporter anser hassan spoke to a neighbor who helped pull one of the sons out of the car to two

brothers are dead from a hit and run accident near downtown antioch. >> it happened after 11 p.m. on friday night. maurice howell says he saw the speeding suv and then moments later, heard the crash. he rushed over and saw the dad asking for help to get his sons out of the car. >> the gentleman, he said, get his kids. so we was trying to open the back door to get his kids and the back door was too hard for us to grab, and we opened the front door. when we got the little boy out. >> howell says the father, who was driving the car that was hit, wanted to put his son under the water, shooting out from the hydrant, hoping that he just passed out from the impact of the crash. so we put him in the water and he never responded. antioch police say the suv may have been speeding when it hit the blue car. police say the driver of the suv took off on foot. the two boys were taken to the hospital where they were pronounced dead. you heard the crash? >> yes i did, yes i did. >> alicia bryant lives just a few doors down from the intersection. she says part of the problem is that drivers ignore the speed limit and the

stop signs. >> you see, a lot of fast cars driving by all the time. you have to really be careful, especially on the stop signs, because they don't stop. and that's really scary. it really is. >> howell says after he drove the father home. put myself in his shoes and i don't know what i'd be doing, man. >> i just my heart goes out for the family because it's just rough around christmas time, too. and i hope they get the guys that did it in antioch. >> anser hassan abc seven news. a scary situation tonight in san francisco's union square. >> something on a stove burst inside the malicious food truck, injuring three people. the san francisco fire department says they all had burns and were taken to the hospital. streets were briefly closed for the investigation but have since reopened. in oakland, a homeless encampment fire briefly closed interstate 880 tonight. as you can see, the smoke could be seen for miles as a thick black cloud just rose into the air. flames were raging, but firefighters

quickly got to the scene and had things under control. within about ten minutes. all lanes were back open by 730. new at 11 oakland police are on the scene of a homicide that occurred on international boulevard and 71st street. police say two people were shot on the premises of a local business. one of the victims was pronounced dead by medical personnel after they arrived on the scene. the other victim was transported to a nearby hospital and is currently in stable condition. the drug overdose crisis is taking a toll on one bay area family this holiday season. abc seven news reporter tara campbell spoke with the mother, whose son is on the streets battling addiction to fentanyl. >> he's not. corey's not in the family pictures. >> jackie berlin is talking about her son corey. he's on the streets of san francisco addicted to fentanyl and the last time he was home for the holidays was five years ago. >> all my kids were together during thanksgiving and we took some beautiful pictures. you

know, he was healthy. he was doing well. he was in a recovery program. >> but those moments in recovery have been few and far between. even communication in consistent. the calls from corey at times going quiet. i've been so hopeful for so many years, and i've always felt like corey was going to get well the last few times i saw him kind of like took away my hope. >> jackie taking to the streets herself in search of her son as san francisco marks its deadliest year yet amid the drug overdose crisis, the last time she saw corey was more than a month ago. >> it crushed my heart because i started to see maybe maybe he's not really going to get out of this alive. >> and, um, this is really for me to, you know, to come to terms with that, that that might be the reality. >> the years of opioid abuse taking a toll, even though, you

know, he's missing some teeth now and his face is drawn. >> he's very thin, but his eyes still sparkle. >> and that's the image of corey. she clings to from that sweet, adorable baby to the toddler him playing the saxophone in the marching band and to even now, how he smiles at me when i, you know, when i see him. but she says even the smiles seem to be fading. >> i think he's really feeling the weight of what he's been living, and i'm hoping that's going to motivate him to get well. >> and as another christmas comes, she can't help but wonder if time is running out on corey. tara campbell abc seven news. >> moving on. a hindu temple in newark is the focus of a hate crime investigation. police say yesterday morning they received a report of graffiti at the shree swaminarayan mandir hindu temple in cedar boulevard.

temple leaders believe the vandalism was intended to intimidate them. investigators aren't releasing the content of that graffiti, but say they believe it was a targeted act. a pro-palestinian protest took place in downtown san francisco as an attempt to disrupt holiday shoppers. will be free palestine . as you can see, hundreds of protesters marched down market street towards bustling union square, calling for an immediate end to the war between israel and hamas. at about 130, traffic had come to a halt near powell street, where the protesters encountered police. at one point, police advised shoppers to avoid the area after demonstrators became rowdier. now, multiple demonstrators were arrested at the protest. union square experienced some vandalism, including graffiti, but police were able to disperse the crowd. the christmas tree in union square was dark tonight. it's not clear, though, if that was a result of the protest.

officials hope to have it repaired and ready for new year's eve. happening now. taking a live look at san francisco international airport, where things have been relatively smooth for holiday travelers the past couple of days, the number of delays were in the hundreds, but certainly not today. flightaware shows only six flights were delayed today and one canceled out over. this holiday travel season is expected to be one of the busiest ever for air travel. for those opting to drive instead of fly, they can expect lots of company on the roads. here's abc's derek dennis with more on this triple a predicts 115 million americans will travel more than 50 miles from home for the holidays. >> we expect it to be the second busiest holiday period since we've been tracking holiday travel. many taking to the skies an estimated 7.5 million projected to fly to their holiday destinations. the tsa says it screened more than 2.7 million passengers on friday

alone. many of those travelers on their way to visit family. it's the most important thing, is family. airports are crowded, but there have been just a handful of flight cancellations since when i left cincinnati. >> the line for check in. it was long. whether people are traveling, you know, days earlier to get to their destination. um, but it hasn't been bad. it has not been bad, though. >> there have been a few delays. we got here early and now we get to sit here an extra few hours. the roads are also expected to be crowded, with about 104 million people driving to their holiday destinations means we could keep our mind on on the end goal and we keep mind on the end goal. >> it makes it easier, those drivers getting a little holiday gift in the form of lower gas prices. >> but then there are those who are just staying home. i already know it's going to be busy. >> my kids are grown, so i'm just going to stay home and have a glass of wine for the most

part, the weather is cooperating with all of this holiday travel. >> dozens of cities will see record or near record high temperatures for christmas eve, but a slow moving storm is heading into the south, and parts of the midwest, bringing with it the threat of possible flooding, which could disrupt travel plans for some. derek dennis, abc news, new york. >> rescue crews worked for 20 hours to free a man trapped in a hole on the edge of a cliff in san diego. according to officials, that man slipped and fell under broken concrete on the side of the cliff. that man was trapped for at least three days before a group of teens heard his cries for help. crews had trouble, though, getting to the man as tides moved in and fear of drowning became a concern. >> we're able to free up the right leg first, then started micro blasting on the left leg. got that freed up and got the victim out as you all saw, the crews did an amazing job with getting everybody else. it was in the end it was a 20 hour rescue. by the time we were here, until getting them out and

after an organized retail crime ring was busted in southern california, the california highway patrol's organized retail crime task force was able to trace local stolen merchandise to a warehouse in northern los angeles. many of the items were recovered, were stolen from targeted retailers like sephora, ulta beauty, victoria's secret, nordstrom, and local pharmacies. the owner of the warehouse was booked on multiple charges, including organized retail theft and possession of stolen property. well, the holiday shopping clock is ticking down with just hours left to go before christmas. today we found lots of last minute shoppers in san francisco. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard shows us how therapy dogs were on duty, calming some stressed out shoppers. let it snow, let it snow. >> let it snow. woo

food and pick up gifts. the fair is decked out with lights, colorful decorations, all in the spirit of the holiday. shoppers will still have sunday to get a chance to experience over 200 artists offering hand crafted products, artwork and other exclusive items. well, tis the season for giving and oakland police officers are preparing to deliver toys and food to families in need. the police officers association has been making these holiday deliveries for over 30 years. with a little help from santa, officers load up their squad cars and will start making deliveries at about seven tomorrow morning. each family was handpicked by the officers and received a basket complete with christmas dinner and toys. well, in just a couple of short nights, it will be the question every child has for their parents. where is santa claus? thank goodness, though, for every parent, the north american aerospace defense command has the answer. like every year, the pentagon says they are ready for this very important mission.

outside. and i think christmas day temperatures are going to be really nice. kind of near the average for this time of year. your low temperatures for tonight, there's going to be a few 30s out there. so of course freezing is down to about 32 degrees. so areas like napa, santa rosa, vallejo and fairfield you're going to be getting down into the 30s tonight. it's going to be a little bit chilly for you, your day planner tomorrow for christmas eve. again. temperatures tomorrow are going to stay somewhere into the mid 50s. i think a few areas maybe hit the 60s, but that's going to be about it. and then you're going to sink down into the 40s overnight and you'll have some of those chilly mornings that are so beautiful in the bay area. still to come in the full forecast, i'm going to talk about some rain headed your way for next week. some of those coastal areas could see up to about an inch of rain. that's all coming up in a bit. dion sounds good. >> alex. thanks well, a bold new law is coming into effect in california at the start of the new year. it will require gender neutral toy selections at large retail stores in the state. abc7 news reporter j.r. stone explains. >> most toy stores have the pink

girls section and the blue boys section. now a new california law going into effect at the start of the year will require large retail stores with 500 or more employees statewide to have a gender neutral section for toys. >> we're not affected by the law, but i say yay! it's not called woke. it's called american freedom. >> helen dean is the longtime owner of toy safari toy store in alameda. she is cheering on the move much of her store already has a mix of toys for boys and girls side by side in every aisle. even the lego friends collection, specifically marketed for girls and not fully compatible with other legos. she says. many years ago, barbie toys like this were geared towards all kids. now the packaging is straight pink. >> if you look at the packaging, you can see an evolution going, going from kids playing with toys to hey, we're going to sell

this to a little girl and this is what she's going to want, because we know the way we are feeding their minds and the materials we choose to use it is narrowing their ideas and the ability to really negotiate the world for them. >> but this new law does not take away a boys or girls section. it only adds the gender neutral section. putting similar products that had been marketed for girls or boys side by side in an aisle along with toys that could appeal to everyone. here's something that you might find in a gender neutral section a clue doll made in france could be for a girl or a boy, but those with the california family council say enough is enough. they believe sacramento, co needs to start focusing more on things that matter and less on toys. >> it's a little crazy that sacramento seems so intent on breaking down the distinctions and differences between men and women, between boys and girls.

international pressure to scale back its offensive. abc news reporter jay o'brien tells us president biden today spoke with israel's prime minister. >> the israeli army releasing footage on saturday. it says, shows idf troop operations around southern gaza city's east district, the gaza strip, as well as airstrikes on some hamas targets. hamas rescue officials in gaza claim an israeli airstrike killed 76 members of an extended family. one day after the united nations chief warned that nowhere in gaza is safe and that the ongoing israeli offensive is creating, quote, massive obstacles to delivering humanitarian aid to israel, striking various locations in northern gaza on saturday, including jabalia, home to gaza's largest refugee camp, the un estimates approximately 85% of gaza's population has been displaced since the conflict began, a report from the un and other agencies says a quarter of the population or more than half a

million people in gaza, are starving. prime minister benjamin netanyahu, continuing to emphasize israel will not stop until it destroys hamas and all remaining hostages taken on october 7th are released on saturday, president biden spoke with the prime minister in private conversation. >> i did not ask for support. >> meanwhile, in the west bank, the city of bethlehem has canceled christmas events, including festive lights, the tree in manger square and activities for children. >> the feeling in bethlehem. we feel that we are in mourning. we feel very sad as we are essential. part of palestinian community. >> city officials worry the cancellation of christmas festivities, which typically draw thousands of visitors, will be a severe blow to the town's tourism dependent economy. jay o'brien abc news, washington. >> one man is dead and another injured after a shooting at a florida mall. police initially thought this was an active shooting, but discovered it was targeted. the victim was shot

multiple times at paddock mall in ocala, which is about 80 miles northwest of orlando. one victim was shot in the leg. one suffered from chest pain and another victim reported suffering from a broken arm. the chicks, formerly known as the dixie chicks, are remembering their founding member laura lynch, after she died in a car accident. officials confirmed lynch died in a head on collision in el paso on friday. both current members of the band and past wrote a message on the group's instagram page. the post says they are shocked and saddened about her death, and went on to say laura was a bright light and her infectious energy and humor gave a spark to the early days of the band. tesla is recalling more than 120,000 cars because the doors may unlock during a crash. the malfunction causing it to unlatch and open increase the risk of injury to passengers. the national highway traffic safety administration says the defect affects some model s and

x vehicles. tesla says it first became aware of the issue during a routine crash test earlier this month, but the automaker says it isn't aware of any injuries resulting from that defect. about half of california voters are worried i will cost them their jobs this is from a new poll by politico. the same poll found 43% said, i will have a positive impact on their lives . about 39 said it will have a negative impact. abc seven news reporter zac fuentes tells us that in the next few weeks, california lawmakers will consider several bills to regulate artificial intelligence . >> how concerned are you, if at all, about losing your job due to being replaced by artificial intelligence in the next five years? that's one of the questions asked in this politico morning consult poll. more than half of california voters asked fell into very concerned or somewhat concerned category. >> it's a legitimate fear. there is no question about it, because the whole thing about ai is

efficiency, meaning doing things faster, more accurate and cheaper. a study done earlier this year by the pew research center found that in 2022, 19% of american workers were in jobs that are the most exposed to ai. >> some high exposure jobs included budget analysts, tax preparers, and web developers. medium exposure jobs included chief executives, veterinary and interior designers. low exposure jobs included barbers, child care workers, and firefighters. regardless of the exposure, officials at different levels say they've been working to protect jobs. microsoft saying earlier this month that it will include labor unions and discussions on ai's impact to workers. the california legislature is set to vote on proposals in its next session. >> how ai is used in the hiring process. how ai is used in terms of displacing workers. those are all relevant issues that we're going to really tackle over the next few years. >> one of the ways is through newly proposed legislation following the sag-aftra strikes, it would place requirements on studios as it relates to using

check of the weather with alex cheney. hey, alex, hope you're having a great saturday night again. >> here is the satellite and radar picture. things are looking nice and dry right now in the bay area. let's take a look at some of your highs for tomorrow. of course christmas eve, a big day. you'll be spending with your family and friends. let's go down into the south bay. santa clara at about 62 degrees. cupertino at about 60. the beautiful city of los gatos will be at about 60 as well. uh- half moon bay at about 58. all these temperatures are right about the normal to the average for this time of year. uh- san francisco, the city proper down to about 56 degrees tomorrow and about 58 in south san francisco as well. let's head up to marin county and up into wine country here, 59 degrees in sonoma tomorrow, 58 in napa. as i said earlier, the temperatures are going to be fighting to get to 60 degrees tomorrow. and i don't think many are going to get there. here's the east bay now. berkeley at 57 degrees and a few 6060, in newark and 60 degrees over into fremont and out here, 57 in

pittsburgh, 58 degrees in concord and 59 degrees in walnut creek. so again, expect a nice cool day tomorrow for your christmas eve. let's look across the country. so 65 degrees down in the beautiful city of l.a, las vegas is going to be at about 58 uh. there will be just a little bit of some snow moving out through the rocky mountains tomorrow. so denver at about 30 for a big system. some showers tomorrow. so this thing going from new orleans all the way up into fargo and you can see kansas city is going to get some showers as well. and maybe a chance of some thunderstorms in oklahoma city on christmas eve and tomorrow, tampa and miami pushing near 80, of course. right. a 48 degrees in new york city tomorrow with some light showers moving through the boston area. but of course, it's all about the two next big days. uh- christmas eve will be anywhere from about 58 to about 60 degrees. and then for christmas day itself, it's going to be nice and dry for the holiday. originally, earlier this week, it did look like there might be some light showers on christmas day night, but now it does not look that way. let's roll out your seven
