matchups ahead of the playoffs. plus, our look ahead to monday night football. >> trevor: we have handy tips if you find yourself on the receiving end of a gift that doesn't make the cut. we know it's the thought that counts. not every gift is perfect. however, more and more retailers are charging return fees this year. >> gio: say it ain't so. let's get right to the travel outlook. abc's meteorologist somara theodore is here with the forecast and whether anybody will be getting a white christmas. good morning, somara. >> somara: good morning to you. the pressure is on. very few places around the country are getting a white christmas. saranack lake, how does it feel to live in a postcard? you have some white heavy flakes now. if you look across the country, very little snow fall. this is some of the lowest we've seen in decades. where's the snow falling right now? nebraska. it's coming down, but it's just getting started. we're anticipating alerts to be going off for carney, nebraska. we could see blizzard warnings.

omaha, lincoln in our winter storm watch. 55-mile-an-hour winds that could lead to drifting snow. usually in the rockies we see higher totals. we could see up to 18 inches in parts of nebraska through thursday. stick around. we'll talk about the rain headed for the southeast on christmas day and some mild conditions. stephanie? >> stephanie: we'll be here. thanks, somara. that storm may be affecting travel. today could be one of the smoothest days in most parts of the country. on what's expected to be a record-setting holiday period. abc's reena roy is at newark international airport. how's it looking, reena? >> reporter: stephanie, good morning to you. so far so good. we've seen travellers trickling in to the tsa security line. we spoke to a couple of them. they say things aren't too bad. this morning the mad dash going strong with millions racing to their destinations in hopes of making it just in time for christmas. >> we came from new york.

here to spend the holidays with my dad. >> reporter: aaa calling it the busiest holiday season ever with 7.5 million air travellers expected. the tsa screening nearly 2.6 million passengers saturday alone. despite the record-breaking crowds american airlines say they've had minimal cancellations. on time departures were 17% better than last year. many passengers in chicago saying so far so good. >> it wasn't crowded at all. took maybe 30 minutes to get through tsa and everything. it was pretty quick. >> we had a great flight. no issues. >> reporter: if there are issues nine major airlines agreed to free rebooking, meals and hotels if they're at fault for a travel interruption. the white house calling on them to do so after the chaos last holiday season when some travellers were left stranded

for days. droves of drivers are hitting the roads. aaa projecting 115 million travellers will head 50 miles or more from home. still, some opting to avoid the roads all together. this driver in boston says he's staying home. >> i know it's going to be busy. my kids are grown. i'm just going to stay home and have a glass of wine. >> reporter: certainly not a bad idea there. if you are planning on heading out, today's one of the best days to do so because the roads are expected to be quiet. trevor? >> trevor: heading to the airport after the show. great news. reena, thank you very much. we're following breaking news overnight. a shooting at a florida mall. one person killed, another wounded with the suspect on the loose. abc's zohreen shah is here with the developments. zohreen, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, trevor. a terrifying scene

officials say they evacuated a mall after reports of an active shooter. this morning an urgent manhunt after police released this image of a person of interest in a deadly shooting at a busy florida mall. officials say the suspect left 40-year-old david nathaniel barron dead and another woman injured just hours before christmas eve. >> it's the worst thing we can imagine right now at this time of the year. >> reporter: this 18-year-old woman was shopping at bath and body works at paddock mall saturday afternoon when she heard gunshots, filming this video. >> there's no way this happen. >> reporter: officials running inside. one person on a stretcher. >> we seen a lot of people and we heard two shots and then noticed that everybody else took heed to it. we heard a couple more and everybody rushed into our store and ran out through the back. >> reporter: police later stating the shooting may have been targeted.

while they've recovered the gun, the suspect who fled on foot from the mall remains at large. the shooting coming as across the country many wrapping up last-minute shopping. some law enforcement stepping up presence. at arden fair mall sacramento police department saying someone brought a loaded gun, accidentally firing it leaving one person injured. >> these events are stressful, scary and rapidly evolving. we always encourage people rem rem remain vigilant. >> reporter: that's good advice. the person who was injured was a 22-year-old man. police say he suffered a minor injury from the bullet shrapnel. stephanie? >> stephanie: absolutely frightening. thank you, zohreen. overseas it's a somber christmas eve. the city of bethlehem foregoing celebrations because of the war in gaza. abc's britt clennett joins us now from bethlehem.

britt, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, stephanie. i'm a lutheran church in bethlehem. you can see in place of traditional holiday decorations there's this. it's meant to represent gaza, symbolizing jesus entering the world in a pile of rubble. quite a powerful statement. usually at this time of year this place is inundated with thousands of tourist and pilgrims from all around the world to visit the place where jesus was born. this year as the death toll soars in gaza, there's a somber feeling here in bethlehem. streets are empty. many christmas events canceled. in fact, christmas itself appears to be canceled. this is very much a city in mourning. the reverend of this church said, if jesus was born today, he would be born under rubble. people saying it's impossible to be joyful and feel the christmas spirit when there's so much death and destruction taking place. more than 20,000 people now killed in gaza. that's according to the hamas-run health ministry. more than 90 people killed in

air strikes on two homes over the weekend, including dozens from just one extended family. the palestinian red presence said this morning a 13-year-old boy was shot and killed by an israeli drone attack while inside a hospital in khan younis. these stories, these victims front of mind in bethlehem on christmas eve. gio? >> gio: so much heart break all around. britt, thank you for your reporting. the impact of the israel-hamas war being felt here at home. law enforcement is monitoring threats of violence against jews and muslims. now abc's chief justice correspondent pierre thomas is speaking exclusively with deputy attorney general lisa monaco about the threat environment and one heart breaking case in particular. take a look. >> the jewish community has been impacted, but the muslim and the people of arab origin as well. that case of the 6-year-old boy

stabbed 26 times, allegedly by his landlord, do you recall where you were and what was your reaction when you heard about it? >> it's heart breaking, pierre. i remember actually asking my staff, 6 years old? 6 years old? the hub of this conflict is thousands of miles away, but its spokes extend here. >> gio: pierre, joins us now. pierre, good morning to you. you've been following these threats very closely. what is the deputy attorney general most concerned about here in the america? >> reporter: this is the most concerning threat environment since 9/11. what they're most concerned about is the so-called lone wolves and small groups acting out in response to that war in the middle east and many other grievances. the fbi's literally going full tilt, running down hundreds of leads, gio. >> gio: pierre, thank you for joining us. tune in to "this week" with pierre's exclusive with lisa

monaco on domestic terror threats and heightened political rhetoric heading into the new year. plus, he speaks with republican senator lindsey graham about the immigration debate on capitol hill and the legal challenges former president trump faces. trevor? >> trevor: president biden spoke with benjamin netanyahu saturday. the president spoke with reporters afterwards. let's go to jay o'brien for more from the white house. good morning, jay. >> reporter: we're learning more about that call between president biden and israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. the president telling reporters yesterday during that call he, quote, did not ask for a cease-fire. the white house adding president biden stressed the need to protect palestinian civilians as casualties continue to mount and israeli forces continue their campaign against hamas in gaza. netanyahu previously vowed israel will fight until the terrorist group is destroyed. other nations have been pressuring israel to scale back.

at the united nations after objections from the u.s., the security council stopped short of demanding a cease-fire in gaza, instead passed a resolution for more humanitarian aid. the u.s. and russia chose not to vote on the resolution. meantime, here at home, president biden is facing pressure from within his own party with some progressive democrats calling on the president to push the israelis to stop their offensive in gaza. meantime, it comes as there's a report in "the wall street journal" saying that in the days after that october 7th hamas attack, president biden successfully pressured the israeli prime minister not to mount a pre-emptive strike against hezbollah forces in lebanon which could have led to a wider war in that region. stephanie? >> stephanie: certainly do not want a wider war. jay, thank you so muscle spasm. now to a busy football weekend with teams vying for a

spot in the playoffs. ike ejiochi joins us with a preview of the big games. good morning, ike. >> reporter: good morning, stephanie. can you believe it's week 16 of the nfl season. just three more weeks of regular football left. this week expect to see everything from teams trying to play spoiler to a possible super bowl preview. it is a busy nfl weekend. the matchups in week 16 are full of playoff implications, with only seven teams eliminated from the post-season so far. >> a lot of wild card spots are still open. this is what makes it such a competitive year. in every division for the most part there are teams that are still fighting for wild card spots. >> hail mary, end zone. >> reporter: matchups to watch, the cleveland browns taking on the houston texans. cleveland holds a one-game lead over texas. they'll be without c.j. stroud. next, the dallas cowboys versus the miami dolphins, the two

highest scoring teams in the nfl going head to head. dallas needs a win to get one step closer to winning the nfc east. miami in a similar position, looking for two in a row after their 30-0 lashing of the new york jets. there's no game bigger on the docket than monday night football. a possible super bowl preview. the ravens taking on the 49ers on christmas night. >> you're talking about two teams that have very good quarterbacks. they have top five offenses and both have top five defenses. that's unique. >> reporter: both teams on top of their conferences. both teams have an mvp candidate at quarterback. only one team feels disrespected. baltimore entering the match as an underdog for the second time this season. that didn't sit well with the players. the 49ers don't seem to be taking them lightly. >> they stand out on tape. they play fast. they play physical. they understand where to go in passing lanes. very well rounded.

zealand. >> gio: he just finished in new zealand. it's a long trip around the globe. how's the weather looking? i know you're tracking that. >> the weather's obviously as he makes his way around the world there will be some bad weather, some great weather. it's unpredictable in some areas which is why it's good he has rudolph up front with that nose to make it through that bad weather. >> gio: absolutely, rudolph's nose. what kind of help does norad offer santa on his journey? >> what we do predominantly is track him through most of his journey. once he makes it over north america, towards our coastline, over north america, we'll intercept him with fighter aircraft and make sure his path is clear. as we intercept him, we'll wave at him. he waves at us. he knows we're there and happy we're escorting him as he makes his way around north america. >> gio: keeping him safe. i know your team started

tracking santa 60 years ago. how did this all start, lieutenant? >> in 1955 a young child called into the continental air defense. the number had been misprinted in a local advertisement. it connected right to our operation center at continental air defense. the colonel who answered the phone played along and pretended he was santa claus. norad took over continental air defense mission in 1958 and we've been tracking santa because of that one incident. >> gio: just incredible. general, i know kids around the world are still calling you on the phone to track santa. >> absolutely. our call center opened at 4:00 this morning. we had already had 2,500 calls before the call center opened. the center will be open at 1-877-hi-norad. there's about 100 people answering the phones, about

herders live in scandinavia. ines de la cuetara has learned what reindeer life is really like. that's coming up. i'm excited for that piece. >> gio: can't wait for that story. we start with a warning to shoppers who may not like some gifts under the tree this year. trying to return them may cost you. many retailers are changing their return policies. abc's alexis christoforous is here with that. alexis, good morning. a lot of people aren't happy about this. >> reporter: they're not. we're talking about returns. christmas hasn't even happened yet. let's face it, not every gift is a winner. if you want your returns to be hassle free, you have to know the retailers return policy. shoppers are expected to return $173 billion in gifts this season, 28% more than last year. all those returns can be costly for retailers which is why 40% are tacking on a fee to return items by mail including tj maxx, abercrombie and fitch and jcpenney.

h&m will waive that fee if you're a loyalty member. amazon is charging a $1 fee at u.p.s. stores. if you have a whole foods or kohl's location. you can avoid most of these fees by making your returns in store. to give yourself the best chance of a smooth return, don't open the box or remove the tag. if you have one, bring the gift receipt with you. other updated retliestoing fees at some stores or shortening the return window. retailers like macy's and walmart will let you return gifts through the end of january. best buy is only giving you until january missing the cutoff could mean you're stuck with something you don't want. trevor? >> trevor: we would never return a gift from you, alexis. >> thank you. >> trevor: we have a shopping update on popular gifts. today is the last day you can buy two recent apple watch modems in the stores.
