christmas eve to those who celebrate. lisa is here with a quick check of weather. we're just about here now. we really are. >> yeah, we've got some active weather coming our way for the last week of the year into january. we're looking like el nino is going to show up as somewhat promised. so here's a look at live doppler seven, where we're looking at the cloud cover. the high clouds to the north and west of us, and we are starting out colder. 35 in livermore, 37 in concord with mid 30s in palo alto and up in the north bay. wind chill factor making it feel like it's 34. in napa, the air temperature there 3637 santa rosa. so that's chillier anywhere from 2 to 7 degrees colder in the livermore valley this morning. so we'll get into those bright skies and a sunny start to the day. increasing clouds, high clouds later on with mid and upper 50s. and we'll talk about that rain arriving when it does, how much we're going to see and how far we can take into that extended outlook. coming up, zach lisa thank you. >> the search continues for a driver involved in a fatal hit and run crash in antioch. that

killed a 12 year old and his 13 year old brother. they were on their way home with their dad and lived just a few blocks away from the scene of the accident. abc seven news reporter anser hassan spoke with a neighbor who helped pull one of the sons out of the car. >> two brothers are dead from a hit and run accident near downtown antioch. it happened after 11 p.m. on friday night. maurice howell says he saw the speeding suv and then moments later, heard the crash. he rushed over and saw the dad asking for help to get his sons out of the car. >> the gentleman, he he said, get his kids. so we were trying to open the back door to get his kids and the back door was too hard for us to grab, and we opened the front door. when we got the little boy out, howell says. >> the father, who was driving the car that was hit, wanted to put his son under the water, shooting out from the hydrant, hoping that he just passed out from the impact of the crash. >> so we put him in the water and he never responded. >> antioch police say the suv may have been speeding when it hit the blue car. police say the

driver of the suv took off on foot. the two boys were taken to the hospital where they were pronounced dead. you heard the crash? >> yes i did, yes i did. >> alicia bryant lives just a few doors down from the intersection. she says part of the problem is that drivers ignore the speed limit and the stop signs. >> you see a lot of fast cars driving by all the time. you have to really be careful, especially on the stop signs, because they don't stop. and that's really scary. it really is, howell says. >> after he drove the father home, i put myself in his shoes and i don't know what i would be doing, man. >> i was. my heart goes out for the family because it's just rough. around christmas time, too. and i hope they get the guys that did it in antioch. >> anser hassan abc seven news and just heartbreaking and a scary situation last night in san francisco's union square, something on a stove burst inside the malicious food truck, injuring three people. >> the san francisco fire department says they all had burns and were taken to the hospital and streets were briefly closed for the

investigation, but they have since reopened and in the east bay, one person is dead and another is recovering after a shooting last night in oakland. police say two people were shot while at a business near the intersection of international boulevard in 71st street. officers found one victim who died on the scene. the other victim was taken to the hospital and is listed as stable, according to authorities. and also in oakland, a homeless encampment fire last night briefly closed interstate 8-80. the smoke could be seen for miles as a thick black cloud rose into the air. flames were raging, but firefighters quickly got to the scene and they had things under control. within about ten minutes, all lanes were back open. by 730. well, the drug overdose crisis is taking a toll on one bay area family this holiday season. abc seven news reporter tara campbell spoke with a mother whose son is on the streets battling addiction to fentanyl. >> he's not. corey's not in the family pictures. >> jackie berlin is talking about her son corey. he's on the streets of san francisco

addicted to fentanyl and the last time he was home for the holidays was five years ago. >> all my kids were together during thanksgiving and we took some beautiful pictures. you know, he was healthy. he was doing well. he was in a recovery program. >> but those moments in recovery have been few and far between. even communication in consistent. the calls from corey at times going quiet. >> i've been so hopeful for so many years, and i've always felt like corey was going to get well . the last few times i saw him kind of like took away my hope. >> jackie taking to the streets herself in search of her son as san francisco marks its deadliest year yet amid the drug overdose crisis, the last time she saw corey was more than a month ago. it crushed my heart because i started to see maybe she maybe he's not really going to get out of this alive. >> and, um. this is really

for me to, you know, to come to terms with that, that that might be the reality. >> the years of opioid abuse, taking a toll, even though, you know, he's missing some teeth now and his face is drawn. >> he's very thin, but as i still sparkle and that's the image of corey she clings to from that sweet, adorable baby to the toddler him playing the saxophone in the marching band and to even now, how he smiles at me when i, you know, when i see him. >> but she says even the smiles seem to be fading. >> i think he's really feeling the weight of what he's been living, and i'm hoping that's going to motivate him to get well. >> and as another christmas comes, she can't help but wonder if time is running out on corey. tara campbell abc seven news. >> a hindu temple in newark is the focus of a hate crime

investigation. police say friday morning they received a report of graffiti at the shri swaminarayan mandir hindu temple on cedar boulevard. temple leaders believe the vandalism was intended to intimidate them. investigators aren't releasing the content of the graffiti, but say they believe it was a targeted act. four people were arrested at a pro-palestinian protest in downtown san francisco yesterday. the protesters were calling for an immediate end to the war between israel and hamas. there will be three rallies starting. hundreds of protesters marched down market street towards the bustling union square. around 130. traffic had come to a halt near powell street, where the protesters encountered police. at one point, police advised shoppers to avoid the area after demonstrator became rowdier and included graffiti in union square. but police were able to disperse the crowd. demonstrators arrested at the protest were charged with assault and battery, as well as felony vandalism. the christmas tree was not lit up last night and it's not clear if it was a

result of the protest. officials do hope to have it repaired and ready for new year's eve. rescue crews worked. 20 hours to free a man trapped in a hole off the edge of a cliff in san diego, according to officials. the man slipped and fell under broken concrete off the side of the cliff. the man was trapped for at least three days before a group of teens heard his cries for help. crews had trouble getting to the man as tides moved in and fear of drowning became a concern. we're able to free up the right leg first, then started microbars on the left leg. >> got that? freed up and got the victim out. as you all saw, the crews did an amazing job with getting everybody else. it was in the end it was a 20 hour rescue by the time we were here, until getting them out, and the space was literally that big that the individual was in for 15ft down both directions. >> the victim's condition is still unknown, but amazing work by first responders and good samaritans. there to. all right, let's get a check in with lisa now. >> all right. another dry day for you. and looking at partly

christmas eve. all right, back to some news now. one man is dead and another injured after a shooting at a florida mall. police initially thought this was an active shooting, but discovered it was targeted. the victim was shot multiple times at paddock mall in ocala, which is about 80 miles northwest of orlando. over $1 million in stolen property was recovered after an organized retail crime ring was busted in southern california. the california highway patrol organized retail crime task force was able to trace local stolen merchandise to a warehouse in northern los angeles, and many of the items recovered were stolen from targeted retailers, including sephora, ulta beauty, victoria's secret, nordstrom, and local pharmacies. the owner of the warehouse was booked on multiple charges, including organized

retail theft and possession of stolen property. the holiday shopping clock is ticking down with just hours left before christmas, and we found lots of last minute shoppers yesterday on the streets of san francisco. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard shows us therapy dogs were on duty, calming some stressed out shoppers. and it's not that it snow. >> let it snow. >> would you believe snow in union square? it happened thanks to this snowmaking machine, but the holiday joy it brought these kids was so real. >> i was expecting to see a lot of people out shopping. having a good time and soaking up the atmosphere. and that's exactly what we got. >> nick drummond and his family were looking for a festive vibe and they found it here. last minute christmas shoppers on a mission looking for gifts and deals. >> there's some discounts in some of the department stores. yeah i have some shopping to do. >> i keep forgetting 2 or 3 people. i go back home and check and lo and behold, i got to go back out. that's what happened

to me today. >> pop up stores are counting on last minute shoppers. the leo rubio sells handmade pet accessories and dog treats. >> it's been a little bit more mellow for slow than other years, to be honest, but i think it's picking up. people are getting in the spirit. get a little pet or a photo for the shopping. >> stressed therapy dogs like brixton were here to provide comfort and smiles, compliments of the san francisco spca. >> brixton is here because there is a lot of, um, families, stressed out shoppers trying to just spread joy and love for the holidays. >> we saw san francisco police officers on duty posted outside stores and patrolling the streets. the added security part of the city's plan to keep shoppers safe. >> go niners william orr from houston, is here from monday's niners game versus the ravens before the christmas kickoff, though, he's got some shopping to do. >> i don't have no bad rap to say about san francisco right

now because i'm enjoying the moment and everything is beautiful. cleanup people. yes sir. >> in san francisco, cornell, bernard abc seven news and if you're one of those last minute shoppers today may be your last day to snag a gift. >> target will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. walmart hours will be 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. best buy opens at 8 a.m. to seven tonight, and tj maxx, marshalls and homegoods are open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m, but all of these stores are going to be closed tomorrow on christmas, so now is your chance. if you leave it to monday, though, you can pick something up at cvs. their hours are going to be 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. some safeways will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and starbucks will stay open. closing around 3 p.m. on christmas day. so a little earlier. but of course you can check by calling these locations or anywhere you're interested in going before going . all right, in the east bay this weekend is the final weekend of the 40th annual telegraph avenue holiday street fair in berkeley. that festival gives attendees a chance to experience live music, food, and

pick up affordable gifts. the fair is decked out with lights, colorful decorations and. the spirit of the holidays. you still have a chance to experience over 200 artists offering handcrafted products, artwork and other exclusive items. looks like a great time out there and tis the season for giving and oakland police officers helped deliver toys and food to families in need. the police officers association has been making these holiday deliveries for over 30 years, and with a little help from santa, officers loaded up their squad cars yesterday full of items for local families. each family was handpicked and they received a basket, complete with christmas dinner and toys and some bittersweet news. today is the final day of business for the see's candies location in san francisco's embarcadero center. a sign on the door said it would close at the end of the day. today, it's not clear why the location is closing, but there will still be three stores located in the city. see's candies is based in the bay area and has been in business for more than 100 years. all right,

there he goes. santa gained some speed trading in his sleigh for a supersonic jet. he test drove the t-38 at nasa's johnson space center in houston, texas. but you know what? santa is still going to be needing his reindeer and helpers. so he's sticking with his sleigh this year. and if you want to know where he's headed tonight, the north american aerospace defense command has the answer. you can log on to the norad website that you see here for real time updates. they can also call a special hotline. it's 1877 high norad to get updates. we have all of that information on our website, abc seven news.com and can't quite see from my monitor here where it's saying santa is at. but he's on his way. oh japan, japan, japan. >> right. >> okay. santa is on his way. i don't know if he's coming to my house. i don't know how good i was this year, but meteorologist lisa argen is tracking the forecast. good weather here for santa to come. >> he's coming to your house. i know he is. i hope so, yeah. we have, you know, a little bit of

everything. we have dry conditions and then we're going to have some rain and hopefully get some snow in here in the mountains over the next seven days. here's a look at live doppler seven, where you can see our satellite and radar composite. the activity of the moisture once again in the pacific northwest, and we are left with a high clouds. we also have coastal flood advisory that starts this morning 7:00 and ends at 11:00. so once again, those low lying areas around the bay shore here, prone to some flooding, minor flooding, you know, maybe some jogging paths. the underpasses, highway 101. i know mill valley is a particularly a spot there that tends to flood and around the bay shore. so keep that in mind. current numbers. we have a wind chill factor in concord this morning. look at livermore at 35. it is 43, in hayward, 35. in palo alto. so these are down from yesterday. probably noticed that some patchy frost possible as well. and there's a wind chill factor around concord where a little bit of a south wind makes it feel like it's 32

degrees 35 in sonoma, 37 up in santa rosa with some fog. our forecast highlights. it's a cold start. sun and cloud mix today. increasing high clouds late in the day. and then for christmas. partly cloudy skies, temperatures near average upper 50s to near 60, and wet weather returns late tuesday into wednesday. beach hazard statement for tomorrow early morning to about 7:00. the waves will be building from point raise all the way down to big sur. already 9 to 10ft, and we'll see up to 12ft as we go through the next 24 hours. so we'll get into some sunshine, the fog clears. it's a bright start to your christmas eve. also, sunday, and then we'll get into some higher clouds in the afternoon. this is christmas morning. also clear and cold conditions to start and then increasing clouds for filtered sun. possibility of a few sprinkles along the sonoma coast late on christmas, but otherwise will be cloudy. the breeze kicks up on tuesday and then we're getting close to a cold front

that's going to move in on wednesday. we stay dry. on tuesday, the winds switch out of the south, so it's kind of a breezy, cloudy afternoon and then we'll. get into that level one system. but christmas night it's all about the niners right? five 1556 degrees. and dropping through the 50s under clear skies in santa clara, taking you through the next week stopping this after that first system on wednesday, not bringing a whole lot of rain. san francisco over a 10th a half inch in santa rosa . and then adding on that friday saturday system could bring us up to about two inches in the north bay. less than that, maybe three quarters of an inch around san jose. this is a snow we're trying to get it going in the sierra nevada. this takes us out a week at and look at that. not a whole lot to talk about yet, but there are more systems behind it. hopefully colder systems. highs today from the upper 50s in fremont to the low 60s under those partly cloudy conditions. and the accuweather seven day forecast, we're dry in the next few days, christmas as

pierre thomas sits down with deputy attorney general lisa monaco for a wide ranging interview on domestic terror threats, heightened political rhetoric and the immigration debate. you can watch the full interview on this week with george stephanopoulos at eight this morning. right here on abc seven. well a new, fast growing covid 19 variant has health officials concerned nationally and locally. yet numbers show fewer people are getting the latest covid vaccine. data show some ethnic groups continue to be less vaccinated than others. i spoke with experts to find out why the jan one covid variant is fast spreading and dangerous. it's about 21% of our strains here in this country. >> but the vaccine still works against it. >> still, health officials say not enough people are getting the latest vaccine statewide. and here in the bay area, data from the california department of public health shows 18% of all residents in alameda county are up to date on vaccinations. as of december 4th, san

francisco county saw 21% of its residents, or 19% of residents in santa clara county, are vaccinated, though the numbers vary among counties, they share one thing in common our latin population and african african ancestry populations have even lower rates, santa clara county public health says only 9% of latinos and 11% of african african ancestry individuals are up to date with covid vaccinations. asian americans have. a higher percentage, and the white population is highest, officials say vaccine fatigue could be one of the reasons, but that's not all. >> this is the first year that that the vaccine has been commercialized. and so we know that for some individuals it may be harder to access the vaccine, particularly for underinsured and uninsured people, though the cdc does have the bridge access program to serve more people. >> so it's really hard to get these vaccines pharmacies get have to need they need stock. they need, um, availability from the biden administration, and they need to be able to administer them. and they're not getting the supply. >> santa clara county says it's been taking different measures to make sure pharmacies and

individuals are able to take advantage of the bridge access program, doing some secret shopper action. >> i'm here at the health department where we're calling pharmacies that, uh, receive vaccine through the bridge access program and making sure that it's easy for clients to call, get the vaccine and that they're not facing hurdles. and if we find anything, um, we're actually working with the pharmacies and working with the state to try to address those issues, work, doctor gandhi says, has to continue in order to serve under-vaccinated communities. >> we have to keep on rallying as public health people and his infectious disease doctors to make that happen. >> so again, even with those potential difficulties, the cdc's bridge access program is still the best way to get free covid vaccine. it's for adults without health insurance, or if insurance doesn't cover all covid vaccine costs. so we have information about it on our website. that's abc seven news.com. all right. so to come on, abc seven morning's record breaking holiday travel what to expect as we enter the bulk of the holiday season and the restaurant of the future. right here in california, we'll show

our inland valleys. check out that 35 in livermore 36 palo alto with 38 in brentwood. concord is at 37. there's fog in santa rosa up towards novato as well. look at all the 30s widespread this morning. so bundle up if you're going to be out there for the early part of the morning. we're going to warm up. we do have sun on the way, but temperatures are going to be on the chilly side for the first half of the day. visibility down to nothing in novato there. here's a look at what you can expect. 9:00 we're still in the 40s. and then through the afternoon the clouds thicken upper 50s, and we'll be looking at a pretty nice evening. although by the time we get to 9 p.m. back into the 40s again. so keep that coat handy. zack. lisa. >> thank you. let's show you what sfo looks like right now. it's still pretty dark and early out there with christmas just one day away. travelers have been flocking to their holiday destinations in record numbers. experts predicting the busiest air travel season ever, with millions expected to fly. here's abc news reporter derek dennis

with the details. >> a day before christmas, millions of americans will be on the roads and taking to the skies. triple a predicting 115 million americans will travel more than 50 miles from home for the holidays. >> we expect it to be the second busiest holiday period since we've been tracking holiday travel. >> an estimated 7.5 million projected to fly to their holiday destinations. the tsa says it screened more than 2.7 million passengers on friday alone. many of those travelers on their way to visit family. >> i'm coming to spend christmas with my sister and her family, coming home for the holidays in the midst of airport congestion, some travelers sharing a few tips that can help. >> be early. don't be late to the airport. you know you never know how long the line is going to be, especially at tsa. >> the roads are also expected to be crowded with about 104 million people driving to their holiday destinations. those drivers getting a little holiday gift in the form of lower gas

prices, that's more money in the pocket. >> that's more money to spend on holiday food, holiday gifts and other things. >> the weather hasn't been a concern for travelers this holiday season. record warmth is expected today in dozens of cities. meanwhile, temperatures will near 50 degrees in several states on christmas day. derek dennis, abc news, new york. >> former president donald trump is urging a federal appeals court to grant him immunity from criminal prosecution in the federal election subversion case. in a filing late last night, his attorneys argued trump is protected under presidential immunity. the filing repeats claims that trump was working in his official capacity as president to, quote, ensure election integrity. the former president is trying to delay the march fourth trial, turning to the latest on the israel-hamas war, israel continues to resist international pressure to scale back its offensive. abc news reporter jay o'brien tells us. president biden spoke yesterday with israel's prime minister.

>> the israeli army releasing footage on saturday. it says, shows idf troop operations around southern gaza city's east district. the gaza strip, as well as airstrikes on some hamas targets. hamas rescue officials in gaza claim an israeli airstrike killed 76 members of an extended family. one day after the united nations chief warned that nowhere in gaza is safe and that the ongoing israeli offensive is creating, quote, massive obstacles to delivering humanitarian aid. israel striking various locations in northern gaza on saturday, including jabalia, home to gaza's largest refugee camp, the un estimates approximately 85% of gaza's population has been displaced since the conflict began. a report from the un and other agencies says a quarter of the population or more than half a million people in gaza, are starving. prime minister benjamin netanyahu, continuing to emphasize israel will not stop until it destroys hamas and

all remaining hostages taken on october 7th are released on saturday, president biden spoke with the prime minister in private. i did not ask for troc. meanwhile, in the west bank, the city of bethlehem has canceled christmas events, including festive lights, the tree in manger square and activities for children. >> the feeling in bethlehem. we feel that we are in mourning. we feel very sad as we are essential part of palestine community city officials worry the cancellation of christmas festivities, which typically draw thousands of visitors, will be a severe blow to the town's tourism dependent economy. >> joe o'brien, reporting there tesla is recalling more than 120,000 cars because the doors may unlock during a crash. >> the malfunction causing it to unlatch and open in increases the risk of injury to passengers . the national highway traffic safety administration says the defect affects some model s and x cars. tesla says it first became aware of the issue during

chacon-cruz started his musical journey by singing popular spanish mariachi songs like these un corrido muy montado, mariachi is almost like opera. >> i say almost because the we tell stories in a very, very. short period of time. we tell the whole story in one song, and sometimes the songs will connect . mariachi has the life, has the joy, has the incredible expression through the voice and the music behind you. >> chacon cruz has performed in 30 countries at the most prestigious opera houses around the world, but san francisco holds a special place in his heart. >> they were doing this opera, il trovatore, 20 years ago, and i said to my wife, then fiancé, wouldn't that be awesome? if i can sing that here one day and 20 years to the day it's happening. so it's a dream maker as well. >> chacon cruz is helping

younger artists achieve their dreams, like moisés salazar, his understudy. >> i think my favorite thing about him is that he is such a nice guy, and that's kind of you know, that's one thing you always hope that when you meet your idols, they're nice people. >> mr. placido domingo gave me lessons and scholarships. i studied with the greatest of the greatest and i feel like i didn't deserve it at the time. i was so young, i hadn't done anything. so i feel like life has given me an opportunity to give back some of those blessings. >> he was one of the first tenors that i heard was like a mexican tenor, you know, and being mexican myself, it was very inspiring, encouraging, singing, seeing a mexican tenor, salazar also started his career in mariachi music, then transitioned to opera. opera puts this uh- illusion sometimes that it's inaccessible to everybody. and so i grew up in southern california, in a ghetto and a part of town, and you just

we do need the breaks in between the storms. coastal flood advisory through 11:00, and this happens at about 846. the high tide at about 6.7ft. so some of these areas here prone to flooding, minor coastal flooding around the bay shore. what a view. isn't this gorgeous? 722 the official sunrise from mount tam. you can see how pretty it is, but all the low clouds they're making for reduced visibility around the bay. 47 san francisco. it is 39, in half moon bay, so certainly a lot colder. 40 in oakland that's colder, 43 in hayward with san jose at 42, san mateo 41. and from pier 39, you can see the fog, cold and quiet. start to the day here in san francisco. look at all the 30s from santa rosa, 36 degrees napa, fairfield. you add in the reduced visibility, 35 in livermore, a little bit of wind out there in concord makes it feel like it's about 32 degrees. so certainly a cold start out there, much colder than we've seen the past couple of days.

zero visibility. novato and you'll notice elsewhere, we're fine, but this fog could move around a little bit. so make sure to take your time. maybe wait a little bit if you're headed out. taking the dog for a walk, it is a cold start. we'll see that bright sun to start out and then introducing more high clouds to the afternoon for christmas. we'll see more cloud cover during the day, so the sunshine becomes more filtered. and then for wednesday we see our level one system, wet weather returning. and then the fun begins. as we get into new year's eve, new year's day, and into 2024, where it looks pretty active. so beach hazard statement tomorrow all throughout the day, where the waves are going to break anywhere from 10 to 12ft, you can see already ten feet from point to bodega bay. and this takes us all the way down to monterey and big sur. so very dangerous conditions for christmas day. sunny skies here. and then as we get into christmas day starts out bright. some patchy fog, some high clouds, and then we'll increase the clouds. there's a weather system well to the north wants to bring maybe a little drizzle

to the sonoma coast during the day on monday. tuesday we're cloudy. southerly winds in advance of the next system makes it breezy and setting the stage for a wet and windy wednesday. there's a look at the niners forecast for monday evening. nice afternoon in the low 60s, but then quickly the temperatures dropping through the 50s for the big game, putting seven days of rain together for you. that first system is the weaker one, a half inch to maybe a 10th. and then as we get into new year's eve, new year's day, maybe 1 to 2in, and then we get a break before more rain comes. seven days of snow, not likely in the sierra nevada, but as we add up the totals just a couple of inches. so we're going to get some colder air in here eventually. highs today back home 58 in richmond, 59 in fremont a couple of 60s down towards santa cruz morgan hill, the accuweather seven day forecast. we're dry increasing the clouds level one system wednesday the weaker one a break thursday. more rain friday into new year's eve and new year's day. so get ready for
