might not have a place to go. here's abc seven news reporter tara campbell. >> the candles are lit and the kids are singing. it's a pretty typical christmas eve service, but at christ episcopal church in alameda, there's something else going on. and kareem williams will tell you all about it. but first he needs to grab his bags and start the short walk to the church's warming shelter. >> uh- i got evicted in 2020. march the 4th, the day covid started and kareem's been trying to get back into housing ever since. so i grew up in alameda, played baseball here, little league and a went to college, came back and became a little league baseball coach. and i just love the island. >> and he says the people at this shelter are showing a lot of love in return. >> it's been a blessing to be here. um i get inspired every day. i see these gentlemen due to being displaced with some people call homeless our community at large. >> you know, um, has a massive structural problem with

homelessness and there aren't enough places to sleep and to eat. >> and reverend stephen mchale says his congregation is helping out how it can this is a little band-aid on a symptom of a massive problem. >> and, uh, but it's what we can do. so we're trying it. >> they've been providing shelter for the past five years. first opening their doors for two nights a week. now they're open every night. >> the need keeps growing year to year. um unfortunately, i wish i could say that that had changed and swung the other way. >> volunteers and staff making every effort to help get people back on track. >> we do know that the bigger goal is to then look at that as an opportunity to get folks connected with other services. um, one of the biggest being support for mental health. >> and with every present placed under this tree, an offering of hope this christmas, we want to make sure people leave here with not only those resources, but,

uh, food and clothing and feel loved. >> everybody gets their own mat, they clean them off, make us all safe here. >> and kareem is welcoming the warmth. >> it's kind of hard because in a community in the hood, kind of sorta, they don't support that being soft and all that. but i embrace the love that i've been given. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. all. pah'-ha-roe paint chelsea say st mary's cathedral in san francisco got a head start on christmas services with a vigil earlier this evening. >> members of the cathedral choir and the congregation sang their favorite carols and listened to an organ recital. the christmas spirit was all around with floral tributes to reflect the holiday season. tonight there will be a traditional midnight mass presided over by archbishop coeur d leone. glide held one of its longtime christmas traditions today, the annual christmas eve luncheon celebration with the help from the house of prime rib, brought out the crowds. volunteers

helped prepare 2500 meals today, with 3,000 pounds of prime rib. owner of house of prime rib, joe betts, says they look forward to the joy of giving every year i is doing it for 30 years and once you start doing it and got to know cecil williams, you really were what giving means telling my son, you guys are all coming back with me next year. >> you're going to all serve god next year. it's a wonderful day and i think people appreciate what we do. our staff appreciate it. the community does. and so i'm just happy to be here. >> it is a wonderful day. glide will be serving more christmas meals tomorrow starting at 11 a.m. on this christmas eve. city crews are repairing parts of union square in the wake of vandalism. san francisco police arrested four protesters saturday after they spray painted parts of the square and damaged part of a giant christmas tree. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard shows us last minute shopping went on

as usual. thursday. >> no snow was falling around union square thanks to a snow making machine, and kids were loving it. san francisco decking the halls and getting festive. >> it's just amazing. like like the whole atmosphere for. and then it's great christmas time. >> love it. the first coat is a primer, second coat or do it. >> public works crews spent part of their christmas eve repairing damage from weekend vandalism. police say a group of pro-palestinian protesters took over union square saturday. police arrested four people, one for felony vandalism after climbing up the christmas tree, planting fliers and a palestinian flag. >> we were staying at the grand hyatt over there and we noticed the lights was completely off for the rest of the evening. >> cindy, she's family, were disappointed to see the vandalism which disabled the tree lights. saturday night. >> hopefully they can demonstrate and express their feelings a different way. of course, we support and embrace all type of feelings emotions,

but damaging city, public, city, property is not really the way to go. >> in a statement, the union square alliance tells abc seven news the ability to protest is a sacred american right. sadly, because of the actions of a few, many will be denied the chance to enjoy the beauty of macy's great tree in union square for the remainder of the holiday weekend. the alliance says repairs to the tree could take days, but by sunday afternoon it appeared the lights were working again. meantime, that christmas clock is ticking down and shoppers all around the square. they're looking for deals. i mean, like, right now i just got a deal on the christian mccaffrey jersey. >> yes. no, seriously. online they're like $200. and i just got a good deal on it. >> can the wife some last minute things christmas eve at the city shoppers were hoping to make it merry and bright. >> merry christmas, happy holidays in san francisco cornell bernard abc seven news. >> well, speaking of shopping, it is a bittersweet day for

customers at see's candies in san francisco's embarcadero center. the store closed its doors for the last time at 6:00 today. there's no word on why the location is shutting down, but if you need to shop for holiday treats during the season, there is a store at market and sutter see's still has three locations in the city selling its signature peanut brittle and fudge. the company is based in south san francisco and has been in business for more than 100 years. an estimated 7.5 million people are projected to fly to their holiday destination now. hopefully all of those travelers will get to their destinations on time. san francisco international has 99 flight delays today, but just one cancellation. san jose's airport had 35 delays and five cancellations. take a look now at oakland airport. this is a live view. now where there have been 49 delays today and six cancellations ins. tsa is expecting 2.5 million travelers to fly every single day until

january 2nd, and traveler have been flocking to their holiday destinations in near record numbers this year. this is turning into one of the busiest travel periods for those who are flying the roads. they might be just as equally busy. here's abc's derek dennis. >> a day before christmas, millions of americans will be on the roads and taking to the skies. triple a, predicting 115 million americans will travel more than 50 miles from home for the holidays. >> we expect it to be the second busiest holiday period since we've been tracking holiday travel. >> an estimated 7.5 million projected to fly to their holiday destinations. the tsa says it screened more than 2.7 million passengers on friday alone. many of those travelers on their way to visit family. >> i'm coming to spend christmas with my sister and her family, coming home for the holidays in the midst of airport congestion, some travelers sharing a few tips that can help.

>> be early. don't be late to the airport. you know. you never know how long the line is going to be, especially at tsa. >> the roads are also expected to be crowded with about 104 million people driving to their holiday destination. those drivers getting a little holiday gift in the form of lower gas prices, that's more money in the pocket. >> that's more money to spend on holiday food, holiday gifts and other things. >> the weather hasn't been a concern for travelers this holiday season. record warmth is expected today in dozens of cities. meanwhile, temperatures will near 50 degrees in several states on christmas day. derek dennis abc news, new york on the peninsula fire investigators are trying to determine the cause of a house fire that killed one person and injured another early this morning in menlo park, fire fighters responded at about 3 a.m. to a call from an apartment complex on madera avenue near van buren road. >> neighbors had already put out the flames using a garden hose and fire extinguishers, but when

firefighters entered the apartment, they found two victims on the floor of one of the bedrooms. one did not survive. >> it looks like they were smokers and the smoke alarms had been removed. uh- is what we found and so we are definitely stressing at this time of year. definitely for people to check and make sure that they have properly installed and functioning smoke detector alarms in their homes. >> the second fire victim was taken to a stanford medical hospital. members of the first congregational church in oakland are answering a call from bethlehem not to celebrate christmas. that plea came from the lutheran christmas church, which serves the palestinian community in bethlehem today. church members in oakland unveiled a banner calling for an end to the conflict between israel and hamas. instead of holding christmas services. >> we are here because our faith calls us to make these demands in the name of our belief system and because we cannot stand idly

of san francisco. now its new owners are hoping a massive redevelopment of the block it sits on will redefine the city's downtown. >> you have to believe, and i'm a big believer in the city and i just i don't just talk about it. i have $1 billion invested behind my belief. >> abc7 news insider phil matier got a first look inside the building and talked with the building's owner about the future of the financial district . >> why would you sink $1 billion into office space in a city that's got a 30% vacancy rate? it's a great question. >> so, you know, i walked when i came to see this building for the first time to buy it. i walked around that corner, looked up to the building, and i told my team, we have to buy this building. it's the fact that this is the symbol of san francisco, no different than the cable cars or the or the golden gate bridge. this building in our investment here, we have $1 billion invested here, is going to rejuvenate this entire neighborhood. you are in the

center. we call it the pyramid district. now, because you're in the center of these five amazing, 4 or 5 amazing neighborhoods that all collide over here, you know, my dream and my vision from three years ago when we bought the building now came to fruition not only because what we've done here with the building, which you're the first one to see it, but also for the tenants that came here, the gamble, i mean, with one third vacancy rate and all these projections we're seeing about, you know, will work come back. >> will the offices come back? do you think you're going to be able to lease the place out? >> well, look, we've signed multiple leases. give it some some stats. when i bought the building, the rents here were between $60 to $100 a foot. we've signed leases between $100 to $275. so you're actually asking more? more than twice what it was before. covid. we can't look at all office being equal. there's office that that has to be demolished. there's plenty of buildings that i could walk you outside here and in every city in new york and chicago, in miami, that just have to go because they're not relevant anymore for the future of how people work. the idea

with this building and with other buildings that we own, because we only we only operate in a trophy esque market. >> chicago, miami, new york, beverly hills, correct. um, what what you're seeing today and mostly after covet also is this huge flight to quality, right? >> tenants want the best product. money is not an issue. we're talking today. the stock market today is an all time high. there's no issue with the economy of this country. the issue is that finally, people understood that their office experience shouldn't be worse than their home experience. what we've done is we've created an experience here and in any other building that we've developed or that we remastered. the idea is that the hospitality, the level of experience that an office building should be at the highest level. we have to earn the commute. you ask about the future of office. people have to have a reason to come to work. right now, employers are having a tough time getting their workers back. >> three days a week is that how you're banking on this? that people would come in three days

a week or the first day? >> first thing that i disagree with that statement because we're seeing in our building in chicago, new york and here that that employers or most employers are bringing people back five days a week. that's not the idea of and i've always been, you know, from the beginning of, of covid, i've said that the idea of work from home is not sustainable. it was a moment in time and there was a huge transformation. since goldman sachs, apple, facebook, everybody brought employees back five days a week. finally, they understood that collaboration cannot be done in your pajamas, sitting in your kitchen on a zoom. it's just not feasible. people are meant to be together and to work together. but what are we doing here and what are we doing in our other office buildings? we're giving employers tools to lure people back to work. we got a private redwood park in the middle of san francisco, something that nobody else has, right? even in my building in new york, while i have buildings that are on fifth avenue that are overlooking the park, everything you see here is all going to be restaurants, coffee shops, uh, souvenir shops, everything you bought

these two buildings too, right? i own the entire block. >> okay. what is you see as the future of office work? what kind of people are going to be in office? is it going to be tech? is it going to be artificial intelligence or or is it going to be the, the old the more financial group's hedge funds who what's the future of american offices? and in downtown cities? >> so let's talk about san francisco specific because each each city truly has its own kind of unique, um, unique aspect. i'll tell you who we're leasing space to. we're leasing space to, you know, vcs. s you know, the higher end venture capital, uh, companies that are at the top of their market right? leaders of the industry, financial, all financial companies, if it's hedge funds or private equity, um, and that that's at the pyramid in two transamerica. you're seeing more of the of the kind of late stage startups. so we're getting a variety of, of tenants. but what what's connecting everybody is there looking for the next generation of office space.

they're looking for the for office space of the future, not the relics. as you said. and that's when you talk about the 30% or 40% vacancies. those happen in buildings that are just not relevant. they have a building with eight foot ceiling and small windows. there's no reason for anybody to go to work. we got the people on the street. >> you walk down the streets here, you see tents. >> what kind of i haven't seen tents down here. and i haven't seen actually the homeless here. interesting. so i, you know, i live in new york. i come here every 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the month, and i've never seen san francisco so busy as i've seen it this week when i've been visiting here. you're seeing the energy back on the street, you're seeing people back, you're seeing people back at the office. even here, because we, you know, we monitor, uh, occupancy. we're at an all time peak as far as tenants, uh, bringing people back to work. >> so you don't buy the doom loop of san francisco? >> there is no doom loop. there is no doom loop. writing off san francisco is not something i would do anytime soon because, like i said, it's an attractive city. the people are great, the food is great, it's a beautiful city, and it's been through a

lot. i mean, it's been through fires, through earthquakes. it's always survived. um, and, you know, i have a i have a privilege and i have a great advantage over you. i'm not from san francisco. so i can see the beauty of san francisco because, you know, you guys are all so self critical about about every single thing. but when you come from the outside and you see the beauty of the city, you see the people, you see, you experience the food. it's a it's a marvelous place. and i have the ability and the advantage of operating in all these different markets. san francisco is one of my favorite cities in america. i've invested $1 billion here, and i can tell you that i've always been positive. and i've said to you, faith is something that you always need to have, not just when times are good, when times are tough, when things happen. you have to believe. and i'm a big believer in the city and i just i don't just talk about it. i have $1 billion invested behind my belief. >> now, the developer tells us that the newly renovated pyramid will create 7000 new jobs in san francisco and generate $2.5 billion annually in revenue for

and radar. so do expect there could be some really light showers tomorrow morning. and there is going to be that coastal flood advisory all the way through 11 a.m. but let's see your daytime highs tomorrow for christmas day. we're going to start off in the south bay 63 degrees tomorrow in san jose, santa cruz at about 60 and cupertino 60 degrees as well. so some temperatures a little bit warmer than average or average for this time of year is about 5758. we see more of that here. 58 degrees in redwood city tomorrow. palo alto in at about 59. as we head up to san francisco, the city proper, 57 degrees downtown, and there will be just a little bit of some fog tomorrow morning because you have some really cold air coming off the coast and just enough heat that's still going to be out towards the bay area. that will create a little bit of fog tomorrow. heading up now towards the north bay, 58 degrees in santa rosa tomorrow. 58 in novato and 59 degrees sonoma. napa. if you're heading out to wine country, that's going to be

a beautiful christmas day for you. you can expect about 60 degrees out here to the east bay, oakland at 59, berkeley at about 57 degrees. these are some great temperatures out there for you for christmas day. and then out here into the concord area, about 58 degrees san ramon at about 60. and pleasanton at 60 degrees as well. let's take a look across the country and see what everybody else is going to be experiencing. on christmas day. uh- seattle. the pacific northwest is going to be getting hit with a little bit of some rain and some snow as well. los angeles, of course. i love la 65 degrees tomorrow uh- areas out towards the rocky mountains are going to be near freezing tomorrow. we took a look at this system of some showers just yesterday. it's now moving on a bit so areas like fargo, you got rapid city and chicago going to be getting lots of rain and snow, at least through tomorrow. uh- memphis pretty good at 61 southeastern united states. looks okay. 68 degrees in new orleans. some showers in atlanta tomorrow and tampa and miami
