>> yeah. here in new york city, saint patrick's cathedral very famous spot was packed with folks coming in for a little midnight mass. and then in vatican city, thousands were in saint peter's basilica as the pope delivered a message of peace. >> and norad has been tracking santa as he makes his way around the globe. so far, it seems his right has been pretty smooth, but with millions traveling not everybody has been so lucky. abc's alison kosik starts us off this morning. >> spirit airlines conducting an internal investigation after an unaccompanied minor, a six year old boy was sent to the wrong city. the child was traveling from philadelphia to fort myers, but instead ended up in orlando after being put on a different flight. the airline saying, as soon as we discovered the error, we took immediate steps to communicate with the family and reconnect them. it comes as the holiday travel rush ahead of the christmas holiday broke records. santa's not the only one on the move. triple a says more than

115 million people traveled more than 50 miles from their homes, and with an estimated 7.5 million people taking to the skies, this will be one of the busiest air travel seasons ever. and it's come with some complications, flightaware says. over the weekend, across the country, there were more than 500 flight cancellations and more than 9000 delays. on friday alone, the tsa screening more than 2.7 million people. the weather, for the most part, has been cooperate, but there have been some issues at chicago's midway airport, nearly 40% of flights delayed this weekend due to intense fog. >> i did not think that i would be sitting in this airport for 14 hours southwest, also canceling about four dozen flights. >> i'm missing christmas the next direct flight they could get me isn't until wednesday. >> passengers waiting hours for their bags, some choosing to leave the airport without them.

christina bows. finally getting her suitcase a day late. >> i literally jumped up and down. >> travel has been strong this year, surpassing pre-pandemic levels despite many americans saying they're worried about the economy. so far, the tsa has already scheduled 12% more travelers than it had by this time last year, and 1.5% more than in 2019. jean danny and morgan thank you. >> allison. well, unfortunately, gun violence is made for a deadly christmas eve at a colorado mall. one person is dead and three others injured after a shooting in colorado springs. police say gunshots erupted after two groups got into some sort of fight at the citadel mall. this was sunday afternoon, multiple people are in custody and investigators determined that there was no threat to the surrounding community. but the mall was shut down after the shooting and it is expected to reopen tomorrow. >> and meanwhile, in florida, police are still searching for the suspect in a deadly shooting at a mall outside orlando. holiday shoppers panicking as

that gunfire rang out. here's abc's zohreen shah, the urgent manhunt for the florida shooter opening fire in a crowd of holiday shoppers just hours before christmas eve. >> ocala police searching for this suspect, albert shell junior wanted for murder and attempted murder. after what they say was a targeted shooting at the paddock mall. oh my god, soraya williams says she was with her mother at bath and body works when she filmed this video. seconds after hearing gunshots. there's no way that just happened. officials say 911 calls began after three on saturday afternoon for multiple shots fired video showing shoppers running and barricading in stores. police swarming the shopping center, recovering a firearm. but the suspect escaping before police arrived. >> we heard two shots and then everybody just rushed into our store and they like ran straight out through the back. >> police say the shooting killed 40 year old david nathaniel barron, another woman surviving after a bullet pierced

her leg. jennifer murti was wrapping presents at the mall when she heard shots and i saw the shooter with the gun in his hand. >> he just fell to the ground. >> police now asking for help from witnesses and threatening felony arrest to a person who they allegedly discovered on surveillance taking the suspect's red hat. >> there was a lot of people here shopping at the mall, which means there's a lot of witnesses that could potentially help us bring this case to a successful resolution. >> there's a $5,000 reward for anyone who can lead police to an arrest. as for the mall, it will be closed until after christmas. zohreen shah abc news, los angeles. so reena, thank you. >> well, the military says an american warship patrolling the red sea shot down four drones headed in its direction on saturday, according to the u.s. central command, the uss laboon was targeted from areas controlled by iranian backed houthi militants in yemen. the laboon was responding to attacks on at least two commercial tankers in the red sea saturday. one of those vessels was hit and

no injuries were reported. the pentagon says there have been at least 15 attacks on commercial vessels in the red sea since mid-october. sober. more fallout from the fighting between israel and hamas. the us military also says a chemical tanker was struck in a separate incident in the indian ocean over the weekend and officials say that that vessel was attacked by a kamikaze drone launched directly from iran. abc's liz landers joins us with more. what is going on in the middle east? liz? good morning. >> good morning. danny with many major airlines suspending flights to israel, the war between israel and hamas has severely impacted tourism to the middle east region during what would normally be a busy time of the year. it's a different kind of christmas holiday today for millions around the world and in the holy land. >> i never saw bethlehem that sad because, you know, the war in gaza affected us. >> that is the message from one shopkeeper in bethlehem, the birthplace of jesus, a quiet, empty town. this holiday in the west bank. as the war between

israel and gaza rages on this year, christmas is canceled. palestinian security forces patrol holy sites during the christmas season, when tourism usually accounts for 70% of income. officials say 70 hotels in bethlehem were forced to close, impacting the local economy. the latin patriarch of jerusalem crossing into bethlehem for what would normally be a time of celebration at the church of the nativity in stead urging a cease fire. >> it is a very sad christmas as we, as we saw, there is no there is no atmosphere of peace because we are in a war, a terrible war. and the message of christmas is not violence, it's peace. muhammad prime minister netanyahu, addressing israel, saying they are deepening the war in gaza. >> meantime, president biden speaking with his counterpart over the weekend, had a long talk with netanyahu today. >> and it's a private conversation. i did not ask for. and in ukraine, that wartime

stab her ex-boyfriend for pushing her daughter. police claim they shot finlayson to stop her from harming the man more shots in the back. >> it's ridiculous. where are the training for these officers? >> my heart is so, so broken. i hate it for him her children. i hate it. it's devastating. >> finlayson's family disagreeing with the deputy's account of what happened and filing a $30 million lawsuit against the department and the county. finlayson's lawyer says she was not a threat and only had the knife to protect her and her daughter from her ex-boyfriend. >> officers should be trained that they are not supposed to shoot, shoot and kill when they don't know what's who's there or what the surroundings are. >> the sheriff's department says the shooting is under investigation. sometimes you just can't cry enough. >> it will never bring her back. but justice has to stand the

annual red cross charity run. you got sprinting santas, surfing santa, santa can do it all. >> got to work off the cookies right? well, there were some big nfl games on christmas eve starting down in the 305. the dolphins and the cowboys squaring off. but the name to know here is the kicker for the dolphins jason sanders. he put the team on his back and his quadriceps. that's the game winner right there. he hit five field goals against the cowboys, including the game winner with two seconds left. the dolphins beat dallas 22 to 20 and the patriots and the broncos got off to a little bit of a slow start, but things did finally pick up in the second half. >> new england scored twice in a six second span in the third quarter. they had a 23 to 7 lead, but it was denver rallying in the fourth, tying the game. but the patriots, they had the last laugh here. chad ryan's 56 yard field goal right at the end. the patriots went on to win 26 to 23. and look the holiday sports are just ramping up. danny >> yeah we got more football

action and of course a whole lot on the court. once the presents have been opened later today, how about one more gift for sports fans? some of the best matchups of the year. we got five christmas day games in the nba. day two are on abc, starting with steph curry and the warriors traveling a mile high to take on the defending champs, the denver nuggets. the warriors will likely still be without draymond green, who is suspended indefinitely for, you know. then tonight the celtics and lakers renew their historic rivalry, considered the league's greatest, the games in l.a. so maybe this lakers pair will make another courtside appearance. and regardless of the outcome, i think we all know how king james is celebrating christmas after tonight. >> i'm looking forward to drinking a bottle of wine. >> meanwhile in the nfl we got three games on tap. the raiders are in kansas city to take on their afc west rivals. the chiefs, starring mahomes and the world's most famous future hall of fame boyfriend. cause baby, now we got bad blood fans wondering two things one will
