and 30s, 38, in palo alto, 48, in the city as we dance to the north bay. it is chilly. 39, in santa rosa with that fog, 41 in napa, 42 in mill valley. so certainly has that christmas feel out there today. and here's how your day shapes up. we'll have that chilly morning first thing. we'll have a blend of sun and clouds. we are dry today. it's nice on this holiday. temperatures near average and the upper 50s to lower 60s, but we do have some rain on the horizon this week. we'll talk much more about that coming up in just a few minutes. kumasi thank you drew. >> happening today, glide is holding its annual christmas celebration. it includes a few events with volunteers set to distribute free meals for people in need. abc seven news reporter lena howland joining us live in the newsroom with the latest on this. good morning lena. >> good morning kumasi today glide is preparing 2500 christmas meals with ham, turkey and all of the fixings to be served at their site in the tenderloin and throughout the city. but they also held one of their longtime traditions yesterday over christmas eve. thanks to a little help from the house of prime rib glide's annual christmas eve luncheon

celebration brought out some big crowds for the holiday. volunteers also helped prepare 2500 meals yesterday alone, with 3,000 pounds of donated prime rib. joe betts, owner of house of prime rib, says they look forward to the joy of giving every year for the past three decades. >> he's doing it for 30 years and once you start doing it and got to know cecil williams, you really were what, giving means telling my son you guys are all coming back with me next year. >> you're going to all serve glide next year. it's a wonderful day and i think people appreciate what we do. our staff appreciate it. the community does. and so i'm just happy to be here. >> glide will be serving even more christmas meals today in their dining room, starting at 11:00 this morning following a christmas service with live music from the change band and the glide ensemble. in addition to those meals, glide will also be handing out more than 250

meals to different encampments. across the city to make sure no one is left behind. live in the newsroom lena howland, abc seven news. >> thank you, lena, the salvation army will be delivering christmas meals to 4000 low income seniors in san francisco this morning. this is video from last year. volunteers will be lining up to start picking up the meals at eight this morning. then they'll head out to different routes just after that, an estimated 7.5 million people are expected to fly to their holiday destination. hopefully everybody gets there on time. san francisco international airport has had, has or had 99 flight delays yesterday, only one cancellation. san jose airport had 35 delays and five cancellations. now let's take a look live at oakland international airport. right now, tsa is expecting 2.5 million travelers to fly every single day from now until january 2nd. but you can enjoy

jetties and beaches without warning. so if you're heading out to that, be careful. today northwest facing beaches are most at risk from breaking waves and strong currents. it is a bittersweet day for customers at see's candies in san francisco's embarcadero center. the store closed its doors for the last time yesterday. there's no word on why this location in particular is shutting down, but if you need to shop for holiday treats, there is a store at market and sutter see's still has three locations in the city selling its signature peanut brittle and its fudge. the company is based in south san francisco. it's been in business for more than 100 years. this, you know, we're right by the ferry building here at abc7. so hearing those chimes arms just bring so much comfort. and we haven't heard them in more than a year. the san francisco

ferry building clock began to chime again this weekend. it's been silent for 18 months because it's been doing a restoration project. the scaffolding around the clock came down just in time for apec last month, but we haven't heard those chimes until this weekend. the whole ferry building facade had been undergoing restoration. it's a four year project to repair, repaint and renovate the 125 year old landmark. and with the chimes, the restoration is officially complete. >> christmas looking very different in parts of the middle east and ukraine. this year i'm liz landers in washington, coming up with the latest, but a scare for one family during the holiday travel rush. >> how spirit airlines is responding after a six year old boy boarded the wrong flight and went to the wrong city. >> oh no, i'm meteorologist drew to a live look outside from our rooftop camera this morning. it is a dry day. we have a mild afternoon. soon we'll break down your christmas holiday region by region.

there's a cold front well off the coastline. you see a lot of cloud cover on satellite. this cold front will actually cross us on wednesday and bring us some light rain across the region, but from time to time we will get some of these clouds blowing off ahead of that front. partly cloudy skies today. cloudier for your tuesday and then that rain returns here on wednesday. let's break down the forecast region by region today along the coast we do have temperatures into the mid 50 under a mix of sun and clouds. and we turn pretty cloudy overnight tonight with temperatures dipping into the 40s around the bay shoreline. it's a chilly start, upper 30s, lower 40s right now. we'll top out in the low 60s under partly cloudy skies and then inland. a little bit cooler will max out in the mid 50s for the most part. right around 4 p.m. your maximum high and we'll have partly cloudy skies as well. so around the region for your christmas day 60 in oakland, 59 in the city, 63 in san jose, 60 in napa, 58 in antioch. no trouble traveling here locally or across the state today it's just a mostly cloudy sky across eureka. redding. lot more sunshine, but we're dry across

shengtao said she would make her selection for new chief soon. it's not known if former chief lauren armstrong is on the list. however the mayor has said before she would not rehire him. this morning, santa finishing up his deliveries and we're getting a look inside the operation, tracking his journey. thank you. are joining deck here at norad, the north american aerospace defense command is responsible for tracking everything flying in and around the us and canada. and that includes santa and his reindeer, the santa tracker has become a global phenomenon. radar stations have already picked up an infrared signal. probably from rudolph's nose. the tradition began back in 1955, when a child accidentally dialed the unlit phone number of the operation center in colorado springs, believing she was calling santa claus. after local promotion that she saw in a local newspaper. so you can track santa yourself using a

link to the norad tracker. it's on our website, abc seven news.com. while norad has been tracking santa around the globe, millions of others have been making their way home for the holidays. overall airlines are reporting pretty smooth rides, but not everybody is so lucky in their travels. here's abc news reporter alison kosik this morning. >> spirit airlines conducting an internal investigation after an unaccompanied minor, a six year old boy, was sent to the wrong city. the child was traveling from philadelphia to fort myers, but instead ended up in orlando after being put on a different flight. the airline saying as soon as we discovered the error, we took immediate steps to communicate with the family and reconnect them. it comes as the holiday travel rush ahead of the christmas holiday broke records. santa not the only one on the move. triple a says more than 115 million people traveled more

than 50 miles from their homes, and with an estimated 7.5 million people taking to the skies, this will be one of the busiest air travel seasons ever, and it's come with some complications, flightaware says. over the weekend, across the country, there were more than 500 flight canceled and more than 9000 delays on friday alone . the tsa screening more than 2.7 million people. the weather for the most part, has been cooperating, but there have been some issues at chicago's midway airport, nearly 40% of flights delayed this weekend due to intense fog. >> i did not think that i would be sitting in this airport for 14 hours. >> southwest also canceling about four dozen flights. >> i'm missing christmas. the next direct flight they could get me isn't until wednesday. passenger waiting hours for their bags, some choosing to leave the airport without them. >> christina bows, finally getting her suitcase a day late.

from la to vegas to phenix. if you have to travel there 65 degrees and sunny to the middle part of the country, fargo is going to see snow at 32 degrees. chicago will get some late day rain. i know o'hare is a big hub for a lot of us. 54. we're expecting that front to move through. it's chilly in kansas city at 38. new orleans looking nice at 67 degrees along the east coast. new england doing just fine from new york to boston. but then we have rain moving through the carolinas and through florida. we do expect thunderstorms from tampa, miami to fort lauderdale later on this afternoon. but back here at home, we're talking about just a mix of sun and clouds today. temperatures really comfortable pretty much where we should be for this time of the year. it is a chilly morning out there, 30s and 40s, to begin our day, but it's nice. later on this afternoon we'll have that partly cloudy sky and temperatures in the upper 50s to the lower 60s. so 58 in richmond today, 59 and half moon bay, 61 in fremont, 60, in santa rosa, 63 in san jose, 62, in santa cruz. niners game if you're headed to levi's later on this evening, a kickoff temperature as ravens are in town. 56 degrees in those

started as a simple family beach day, but has since grown into a beloved tradition for both locals and visitors. with its distinctive blend of florida sunshine and christmas spirit, participants and spectators. spectators enjoyed live music, a costume contest and, of course, watch the surfing santas ride the waves. thousands of runners wearing red suits took part in the 12th annual santa charity run. this is in madrid, spain. now at least 6000 santas ran nearly three miles during the race. this unique charity fun run transformed part of the city into a sea of christmas fun. it not only touched hearts, but it raised money for spain's red cross. a message from the pope. next, at 630, the plea from pope francis amid multiple conflicts happening around the world, finally free after being trapped for three days. how emergency crews in san diego were alerted to a man after he fell into a hole on the edge of a cliff. and

christmas to you. >> we're in the spirit, i know. >> got my sweater on you. a green on. and it's going to be a nice day. it is if you're traveling or just staying locally here in the bay area is going to have some very nice weather this afternoon. this morning, though, it's the north bay that has a bit of fog. santa rosa, novato. we're down to anywhere from a quarter to a half of a mile. there are no dense fog advisories in effect, but just be aware there is a little bit of low visibility outside of the north bay. we're doing just fine. we do have a beach hazard statement in effect along our entire coastline today. for the increased risk of rip currents and sneaker waves just be aware of that. if you are going to the coast today, never turn your back to the water. that beach hazard statement until 7 p.m. this evening. it's chilly out there, upper 30s to the mid 40s for the most part. certainly want the winter jacket. the scarf and the gloves also, but it's shaping up to be a very nice afternoon today. here's how christmas day breaks down. we have that chilly morning right now, but partly cloudy skies later on today. looking nice. by 4 p.m. temperatures close to average in the upper 50s to lower 60s. we do have some rain to talk about

this week. we'll show you that coming up in a few minutes. kumasi thank you drew. >> the ongoing conflict playing out in gaza is impacting the holidays in some of the most holiest sites in the world, one being jesus's birthplace of bethlehem. there, christmas has been canceled over israel's war with hamas. here's abc news reporter liz landers. >> it's a different kind of christmas holiday today for millions around the world and in the holy land. >> i've never saw bethlehem that sad because, you know, the war in gaza affected us. >> that is the message from one shopkeeper in bethlehem, the birthplace of jesus, a quiet, empty town. this holiday in the west bank. as the war between israel and gaza rages on this year, christmas is canceled. palestinian security forces patrol holy sites during the christmas season, when tourism usually accounts for 70% of income. officials say 70 hotels in bethlehem were forced to close, impacting the local economy. the latin patriarch of jerusalem crossing into bethlehem for what would normally be a time of celebration at the church of the

nativity. instead urging a cease fire. it is a very sad christmas as we, as we saw, there is no there is no atmosphere of peace because we are in a war, a terrible war. >> and the message of christmas is not violence. it's peace. >> prime minister netanyahu addressed sing israel, saying they are deepening the war in gaza. meantime president biden, speaking with his counterpart over the weekend, had a long talk with met now today and is the private conversation. >> i did not ask for. >> and in ukraine that wartime nation also recognizing the holidays amid a somber backdrop in kyiv, president zelensky of ukraine calling it a christmas with a different mood, context and different taste. zelensky also said that during this holiday time, it's not important how homes may be decorated, but instead how ukrainians are protecting their homes. during this two year long russian invasion in washington. liz

congressional church says the protest is part of a series of banners reveals across the bay area. >> church leaders are calling on the u.s. government to end military support for genocide and to support humanitarian aid. it appears the lights are shining again on the christmas tree in san francisco's union square. public works crews spent part of their christmas eve repairing damage from vandals. police say a pro, a group of pro-palestinian protesters took over union square saturday. officers arrested four people, one for felony vandalism after climbing up the christmas tree and planting fliers, as well as a palestinian flag. >> hopefully they can demonstrate and express their feelings at different way. of course, we support and embrace all type of feelings, emotions, but damaging city public city property is not really the way to go in a statement, the union square alliance told abc seven the ability to protest is a sacred american, right?

to those meals, glide will also be handing out more than 250 christmas meals to different encampments across the city to make sure no one is left behind. live in the newsroom lena howland abc seven news. >> thank you, lena, the spirit of giving this holiday season is alive and well at one church in alameda. here's abc seven news reporter tara campbell. >> the candles are lit and the kids are singing. it's a pretty typical christmas eve service, but at christ episcopal church in alameda, there's something else going on, and kareem williams will tell you all about it. but first he needs to grab his bags and start the short walk to the church's warming shelter. >> uh- i got evicted in 2020. march the 4th. the day covid started and kareem's been trying to get back into housing ever since. so i grew up in alameda, played baseball here, little league and uh, went to college, came back and became a little league baseball coach. and i just love the island. >> and he says the people at this shelter are showing a lot of love in return.

years after it burned notre dame's new spire is back in the paris skyline. then bringing christmas vacation to life, the family that transformed their home like the one in the movie and raise money for a good cause. first, though, a check of our forecast with ou. >> hey, good morning kumasi. we're looking outside a live picture from santa cruz this morning. we're starting to see our first hint of that sun coming up. we're dealing with partly cloudy skies this morning and some very chilly temperatures right now. we'll take a look at our neighborhoods right now. 46 at sfo, 38 in palo alto, 41 in concord. the same in oakland. good morning. into the north bay we go. it's 39, in santa rosa, 38 in sonoma, 37 in novato. the winter jacket, the hat, the gloves, maybe the scarf needed early on, but we will see a nice afternoon. here's the coast the next 24 hours. starting out in the 40s, maxing out in the mid 50s under a mixture of sun and clouds around the bay shoreline. we will find some chilly numbers upper 30s,

wood and north san antonio road. now, we do know from authorities that this building has multiple businesses, houses, and the fire has been burning for several hours now. thankfully no one is hurt. we are still working to learn more about what may have caused the fire. we'll update you as soon as we get more information on. a man is recovering in the hospital this morning after rescue crews worked for 20 hours to free him from a hole on the edge of a cliff. it happened in san diego, according to officials. he slipped and fell under broken concrete off the side of the cliff and was trapped for at least three days before a group of teens heard him crying for help. crews had some trouble getting to him because the tides

were moving in, and there was a fear of drowning. we're able to free up the right leg first, then started microbars on the left leg. >> got that? freed up and got the victim out. as you all saw, the crews did an amazing job with getting everybody else. it was in the end it was a 20 hour rescue. by the time we were here, until getting them out and the space was literally that big that the individual was in for 15ft down both directions. >> goodness. well, thankfully they were able to get him out. there's no word yet on the extent of his injuries. another other christmas tradition will have to wait another year in paris. the notre dame cathedral is soaring back to life, but it won't be ready to host christmas mass again until 2024. here's abc news reporter james longman. >> when notre dame caught fire in 2019, millions watched a piece of history burn an international treasure nearly destroyed the challenge to rebuild it. huge i saw the scale of the damage in early 2021. the massive hole in the roof still

wide open. but now, just a year till completion on the finish line is in sight and you can see the spire. we climb our way towards the very top of the new spire. you can see the stonework here. this is all completely new. it was too destroyed to recover. and this woodwork, the beams have all been freshly laid. and you can see that bunch of flowers. that's a gift from the carpenters to say that they're done with this part. hundreds of feet up the scale of this colossal project is clear. and here we are, right on the top of notre dame de paris. i mean, take a look at this view. it's extraordinary. and the spire is back. i mean, those images, when the spire initially crumbled down into the church, when it was on fire, they sent shockwaves all over the world. and it was a trauma for france. it being back now, standing tall over the city, it's a rebirth. americans were part of a large group of carpenters that came, and they used really ancient technique peeks inside the changes are miraculous. that hole in the roof closed back up entirely. hundreds of years of dirt cleaned from the walls to

brighten every surface. 2000 specialists have worked on this project joiners, carpenters, stonemasons, artists and metalworkers all working around the clock to make next year's deadline. the stunning rose stained glass window cleaned and back to its former glory. this is the most sacred part of the church now the altar, and you'll remember in the days after the fire, those extraordinary images of the cross down next to the altar with the debris all around it. well, now look at it. the cross is back up, waiting to be unveiled. the spire back on top of notre dame de paris is the christmas present the french were waiting for. but this cathedral won't be fully open until december of next year. james longman abc news in paris. >> an ohio family's home is the talk of the town during christmas because it's a spitting image of the griswold house from christmas vacation. abc news reporter danny new caught up with the family, who is always bringing holiday cheer

. hey that house looks familiar. >> how many lights go into your display? >> 25,000 uh. just like the movie, everything has to be exact. all alleluia. >> for the last 11 years, greg and rachel osterlund of wadsworth, ohio, have erected an increasingly even more accurate recreation of the display from the 1989 classic national lampoon's christmas vacation. >> there we go. perfect >> the journey to this jolly obsession actually started with greg's childhood, when his family would not only just watch the movie every christmas eve, they would pause the movie and you had to reenact the entire uh- scene. >> they've landed there uh- portions of their yard as well. >> over the last decade, as the family has roped in neighbors and expanded the production, the house has actually become quite famous. >> they type in griswold house. our house is usually the one that shows up just like chevy chase's house. i think we're all in for a very big treat.
