travel trouble. a six year-old traveling alone to his grandmother's was put on the wrong flight. the boy's family is now speaking out as the airline responds. >> but first, the weather concerns for travel today. here's abc's liz landers travel troubles plaguing the post-christmas crowd after a snowy holiday left highways a mess in the midwest. >> in nebraska, blizzard like conditions brought interstate 80 to a standstill. christmas day. the highway shut down for hours after whiteout conditions caused dozens of crashes. freezing rain in minnesota coated trees and roadways, and in south dakota, 50 mile per hour winds and heavy snow, forcing officials to close part of i-90. it was fog that forced southwest airlines to cancel dozens of flights in chicago over the weekend. the airline still reeling from the christmas chaos last year that left more than 2 million passengers stranded. the airline was recently hit with a record

$140 million fine. meanwhile, another airline is facing backlash, this time for a mix up with an unaccompanied minor. >> they told me no, he's not in this flight. he missed his flight. i said, no, he could not miss his flight because i have to check in. tag spirit airlines mistakenly flying a six year old to the wrong airport just days before christmas, instead of sending the boy from philadelphia to fort myers, florida, he was placed on a flight that landed in orlando 150 miles away. i want them to call me and let me know how my grandson ended up in orlando. how did that happen? >> spirit airlines saying the child was always under the care and supervision of a spirit team member. and as soon as we discovered the error, we took immediate steps to communicate with the family and reconnect them. as for the weather, the northern plains could see up to 16in of snow. the midwest and deep south get rain today, but no other major weather problems are expected. andrea

>> all right. liz. thank you. breaking overnight, us forces are taking aim at iranian backed militants inside iraq. the pentagon carried out multiple air strikes after a drone attack yesterday that injured three american troops at a military base in the iraqi city of erbil. it's the latest in a string of attacks on us forces in the region since october, after hamas attacked israel. >> in the meantime, christmas saw no break in the fighting between israel and hamas as the civilian death toll mounts. there is a new ceasefire plan being offered, but so far there's little if any, support for it. this morning, despite growing international calls for a ceasefire, israel is forging ahead with its bombing campaign in gaza. prime minister benjamin netanyahu, during a surprise visit with his troops, proclaimed we are not stopping. netanyahu saying the war will continue until hamas is destroyed. just hours earlier, one of the deadliest airstrikes for civilians since the war began, the hamas run gaza health

ministry says at least 70 people were killed in an airstrike on this refugee camp. dozens of women and children among the victims. also over the weekend, at least 71 israeli soldiers were killed, sparking renewed protests in israel. what the prime minister was heckled in parliament by families of israeli hostages held by hamas. >> we need someone to tell us what they're going to do. we need everyone to know that romi and many more hostages are still held, held in gaza, and we want people to remember them and to not forget that they're there. and they need to come home. >> neighboring egypt is now proposing a new ceasefire plan. it includes a mediated release of hostages and the formation of a new palestinian government in gaza. neither side outright rejected the offer, raising hopes for a new round of diplomacy. but there's also growing concern about a wider conflict in the region. iran says a high ranking iranian

general was killed during an israeli airstrike in syria yesterday. an iranian political group now calling for revenge. the us is hoping to work with israel to scale down operations in gaza, axios reports. one of prime minister netanyahu's top confidants will visit the white house today, where officials plan to discuss a time frame for the next phase of the war. >> officials in ukraine say they've blown up a russian navy ship this video of an explosion was posted online on a ukrainian air force commander claims it shows the destruction of a russian landing ship in crimea. ukrainian forces also claim they shot down five russian fighter jets. since friday. they're denying reports that russia has captured another town in the eastern part of the country, alexei navalny, the russian opposition leader who is a vocal critic of vladimir putin, has been located at a penal colony in siberia, considered one of russia's toughest prisons. supporters had been unable to reach him for nearly three weeks, but his lawyer was allowed to visit yesterday. critics believe putin is trying to isolate navalny and head of

ahead of the upcoming presidential election. >> a migrant caravan on the way to the u.s. from southern mexico has grown to an estimated 8000 people, most of the migrants are from central and south america. their journey comes as us secretary of state antony blinken heads to mexico city for talks on addressing the historic surge of migrants traveling north. more than 10,000 migrants have been arrested per day at the us southern border. >> we turn now to florida and the manhunt after a deadly shooting at a mall packed with holiday shoppers before christmas, police also looking for an accomplice. this morning, police in ocala, florida, northwest of orlando, have named their suspect in a deadly shooting at this mall that sent panicked shoppers barricading themselves inside stores. saturday oh my god. police say albert shell jr opened fire inside the paddock mall, shooting 40 year old david barron multiple times in what investigators say was a targeted killing. a woman was also shot in the leg. police ordering

shoppers to take shelter, officers locking down the mall for 12 hours. >> we heard two shots and everybody just rushed into our store and just like ran straight out through the back. >> the suspect was wearing a red hat, which police say may contain dna evidence. crucial to their case. but the hat is missing. authorities say this man took the hat from the scene. he's now wanted accused of tampering with evidence. >> there was a lot of people here shopping at the mall, which means there's a lot of witnesses that could potentially help us bring this case to a successful resolution. >> the one bright spot for investigators, they say the gun has been found, but no word on a motive for the shooting. a $5,000 reward is now being offered for information leading to the arrest of the shooting suspect, congresswoman marjorie taylor. >> greene has been the target of another swatting incident. police georgia say a man called them yesterday reporting a crime at greene's house. investigators say the call actually came from new york and there was no crime. greene was swatted multiple times last year in a post online yesterday, she criticized the fbi, but praised her local

police near portland, oregon, are searching for some high priced artifacts after a christmas eve gold heist, someone broke into the rice northwest museum of rocks and minerals and ransacked a display case filled with gold items. surveillance images show the suspect inside the building. the value of the gold has not been made public. >> we now turn to one couple's expanded family this holiday season. they just welcomed two baby girls. the results of a very rare pregnancy. christmas came early this year for this couple in alabama. kelsey hatcher and her husband caleb just welcomed two baby girls after what doctors say was a 1 in 1,000,000 pregnancy. what makes these births so unusual is that hatcher has a rare condition called uterine didelphys, which means that she has two uteri. her doctors warned her that she could experience complications if she got pregnant, despite that, she had three normal pregnancies and then she got pregnant with two embryos, one in each of her uteri. >> as soon as she moved the
