sorry for the businesses. you know that uh- that i work out of there. >> several los altos businesses gone in a flash now at five. investigators looking into how the early christmas morning fire started and a proposal for peace. now on the table, the details from egyptian officials working to broker a deal forward between israel and hamas, and a live look this morning at major bay area airports. it's been pretty smooth for people flying in and out of the bay. more on today's flight forecast. as people continue to travel for the holidays. good morning everybody. it is tuesday, december 26. we hope you had a merry christmas. we are back here looking at the forecast for you and today is okay.

>> today is a dry day. it's tomorrow that will bring some wet weather into the forecast. here's a live look outside the exploratorium camera. we have a little bit of fog out there right now across the city and along the coast, but visibility mode will switch it over to live doppler seven. we're not finding any thick fog right now. we'll keep our eyes on this map at tends to ebb and flow over the next couple of hours as we head towards sunrise, but right now we aren't dealing with any dense fog advisories. temperatures it is on the chilly side. you see, these numbers are starting out in the 40s for the most part. 48 in vallejo. good morning. 45 in san jose, 44 in brentwood, san mateo, starting at 46 degrees. we have a lot of cloud cover upstairs, and that's going to hang around for much of the day. so it's partly sunny skies this morning. mostly cloudy in the afternoon. we're dry today with temperatures in the upper 50s to lower 60s, but showers do return tomorrow. we'll talk much more about that. eight minutes. let's check in with sue and see how the commute is doing. >> all right. if you have an early morning flight this morning, it's no problem getting there. we are very light on the roads. taking a look at the east shore freeway, those streaming

headlights headed in the westbound direction of 80 past golden gate fields and berkeley and on into the macarthur maze for the bay bridge toll plaza is very light as well. we are looking over at 880 because we do have an accident on the 880 on ramp to southbound, or i should say the hegenberger on ramp to southbound 880 is not affecting your drive. this is if you're headed towards oakland airport this morning. i know we have family flying out. it is moving at the limit, but thank you to now we are talking about that holiday travel rush. >> it's happening right now. this is a live look at sfo and san jose international airport. according to data from tracker flightaware.com, 12 flights have been delayed only one canceled so far at sfo. now at sjc, travelers are looking at nine delays, no cancellations. this morning. it's a different story when we talk about air travel for christmas day, sfo and sjc combined saw more than 120 delays, each one with a canceled flight. now let's look at our

abc seven news oakland airport camera oakland international journal saw more than 40 delays yesterday. more than ten cancellations right now we're seeing about five delays this morning. now early winter weather is causing some headaches for americans traveling today. the midwest is already experiencing blizzard conditions impacting those driving cross country flight delays and cancellations are limited for now. abc news reporter liz landers has more on the travel conditions from washington this morning. >> a wintry weather storm is hitting the heartland, bringing blizzard conditions around the holidays. that was i-80 at a standstill for hours yesterday in nebraska, when whiteout conditions caused dozens of crashes. 50 mile per hour winds shut down part of i-90 80 highway in south dakota. christmas day two south dakota, north dakota, minnesota and iowa all under a winter weather advisory. an ice storm warning up to a half inch of ice could accumulate on trees and power lines. expect these conditions

through wednesday in the same storm system will bring heavy rain into the mid-atlantic by this evening and into the northeast by tomorrow. these conditions, expected to cause travel delays on the roads and in the skies as americans are eagerly back to traveling for the holidays 157 flights within into or out of the u.s. canceled. so far, and 2111 delayed as of late afternoon monday, according to flightaware . for one airline mix up, leaving a six year old boy in the wrong city, they told me, no, he's not in this flight. >> he missed his flight. i said, no, he could not miss his flight because i have to check in. >> tag spirit airlines accidentally sent an unaccompanied minor from philadelphia to orlando instead of his correct destination of fort myers, florida. spirit airlines saying the child was always under the care and supervision of a spirit team member. and as soon as we discovered the error, we took immediate steps to communicate

with the family and reconnect them. and it has been a record year for airline travel. tsa says that they have seen 12% more travelers this year than last in washington. liz landers abc news entire livelihoods for a group of small businesses in los altos have been turned upside down. >> we first brought you this story as breaking news yesterday morning right here on abc seven morning. that's when fire crews were called to an early morning, two story shopping center. fire at the corner of west el camino real. now, fortunately, no one was inside the building at the time, but this morning is still dangerous out there. abc seven news reporter lena howland joining us live this morning with the latest lena kumasi, fire officials say there is still a big concern that this building could collapse outward, which is why they do have such a large perimeter set up around this building right now, with part of el camino real still shut down at this hour. >> this fire started more than

24 hours ago, just before 5:00 on christmas morning. during the firefight, there was some structural collapse, including the roof and the hvac systems. so firefighters were pulled to battle the flames from the outside, taking firefighters until the afternoon to get this fully contained. business owners tell us there's at least ten other businesses that were in this shopping center, including a salon, a bakery and sat prep center, and a judo and martial arts school. >> so i'm shocked. still you know, i just opened up my business. it's only been a year, so it was starting to go really well. you know, great location, nice building. and then this the santa clara county deputy fire chief says if the building contents have cooled by some time later this morning, then firefighters can take a closer look inside. >> they have not been able to make entry since before the roof collapsed. fire fighters also tell us that the cause of this fire is still under

investigation, but no one was hurt in this fire. live in los altos. lena howland abc seven news. >> thank you. lena developing news president biden is ordering the u.s. military yesterday to carry out airstrikes in iraq. officials say it was one of three options given to the president in a call with defense secretary lloyd austin. according to the white house, that strikes targeted three locations used by iranian backed militants. the strike was called in retaliation for a drone attack that injured three u.s. service members in northern iraq . one of them is listed in critical condition. new developments in the war between israel and hamas as a civilian death toll keeps rising. there is a new ceasefire plan being offered, but so far there's little, if any, support for it. abc news reporter andrew dymburt has the latest. >> this morning, despite growing international calls for a cease fire, israel is forging ahead with its bombing campaign in gaza. prime minister benjamin netanyahu, during a surprise visit with his troops, proclaimed we are not stopping.

netanyahu saying the war will continue until hamas is destroyed. just hours earlier, one of the deadliest airstrikes for civilians since the war began, the hamas run gaza health ministry says at least 70 people were killed in an airstrike on this refugee camp. dozens of women and children among the victims. also over the weekend, at least 17 israeli soldiers were killed, sparking renewed protests in israel to do a vote. the prime minister was heckled in parliament by families of israeli hostages held by hamas. >> we need someone to tell us what they're going to do. we need everyone to know that that romy and many more hostages are still had held in gaza. and we want people to remember them. and to not forget that they're there and they need to come home. >> neighboring egypt is now proposing a new cease fire plan. it includes a mediated release of hostages and the formation of a new palestinian government in

gaza. neither side outright rejected the offer, raising hopes for a new round of diplomacy. but there's also growing concern about a wider conflict in the region. iran says a high ranking iranian general was killed during an israeli airstrike in syria yesterday. an iranian political group now calling for revenge. the us is hoping to work with israel to scale down operations in gaza, axios reports. one of prime minister netanyahu's top confidants will visit the white house today, where officials plan to discuss a time frame for the next phase of the war. andrew dymburt abc news, new york. >> 509 will take you to san jose mineta international, where things are quiet. we have mostly cloudy conditions right now, and the cloud cover is going to hang around all day today. so looking at the morning drive, you can see it's a mostly cloudy morning. we're dry out there just a few peeks of sunshine. once that sun is up here past 7 a.m, temperatures starting out in the 40s and slowly climbing through the 50s as we head into the afternoon, here's live doppler seven along with satellite. you can see a lot of

cloud cover moving into northern california on satellite, it's all ahead of this cold front. this cold front will move through here tomorrow and bring a return of some showers. but ahead of it, we're getting a lot of cloud cover blowing off that front today. it's just a cloudy day before those showers return tomorrow. so here's the breakdown. region by region today. you see, it's a mostly cloudy day. we'll have winds out of the south, gusting about 5 to 15mph. and most of us will get into the upper 50s to the lower 60s for daytime highs. now if you travel across the state, we're not finding any issues. just cloudy in northern california. a lot more sunshine in southern california, but we're not finding any intense weather makers coming our way. the next 24 hours. but that rain is going to come back here by about wednesday midday on the abc seven storm impact scale to level one tomorrow. scattered showers and isolated downpours. it will create some slick travel. we'll go hour by hour in future weather. kumasi the storm coming up in about nine minutes. >> thank you drew. well tomorrow's weather could be a helpful tool to get ahead of a seasonal chore today. coming up,

one in the past, including people who were never convicted or prosecuted. it applies to simple. possession, attempted possession and use of marijuana on federal land. and in washington, d.c. anyone who needs proof of a pardon will need to apply for a certificate. for a certificate from the justice department. once the calendar officially flips to 2024, a slate of new laws is set to hit the books here in california. for many of them, aiming to help you save money. so here are a few of the policies going into place. minimum wage is increasing to $16 an hour for all employers. fast food employers are required to pay workers a minimum of $20 an hour starting on april first.

health care workers are seeing an increase in pay to $18 an hour. more sick time coming to california workers sb 6.16 ensures workers will get at least five days, or 40 hours of sick leave every year. it's up from the standard three day minimum, or 24 hours a year. this new law aims to standardize sick leave policy statewide, a ban on junk fees goes into effect on july 1st. sb 478 prohibits the active, deceptively advertising low prices, then tacking on those additional required fees either in the fine print or toward the end. now, state attorney general rob bonta says california now has the most effective piece of legislation in the nation to tackle this problem. also, starting on july 1st, a ban on expensive security deposits, landlords with more than two rental properties will not be able to require deposits that cost more than a single month's rent. now landlords that own only two properties, with a total of for units will be

exempt from this ab 12, which was introduced by san francisco's assemblymember matt haney, was signed into law back in october. when it comes to christmas day meals, not many have been doing it as long as saint anthony's foundation in san francisco. its ar 1500 meals to guests in the tenderloin yesterday, continuing its more than 70 year old tradition. abc seven news reporter melanie woodrow introduces us to some of the volunteers who've been around for decades. reporter for 73 years, saint anthony's foundation has been serving guests a hot meal on christmas and for 20 years, the wasserman family has been volunteering to help. >> this is josh and he was seven when we started doing this. >> it's a very important part of our tradition. >> it taught me at a very early age the importance of working community service into your life and your schedule. allison wasserman, now 32 and living in los angeles, travels back to san francisco to volunteer every year. >> i honestly like i can't remember not doing it. >> we love the mission and the

message and, you know, yeah, we could be doing anything, but we get up and this is what we do. it's now it's part of our tradition. >> we're just trying to help other people instead of staying at home. and unwrapping presents. >> saint anthony's foundation interim ceo brian young it's a great opportunity for us to connect with our community, connect with our guests and serve them a warm meal. >> but at the same time serve them a smile as well. >> christopher harris appreciated being able to spend his christmas here. >> i have no family here. they're all back in the east coast and this is a blessing. the difference saint anthony's makes extends beyond the holidays. >> david white says he used to sleep outside saint anthony's was addicted to crystal meth and with nothing left nine months ago, he changed his life with their help. >> my life is so much better now. >> now he works at saint anthony's in guest services. i was finally ready to change. >> i was i was at my wit's end. i had no hope left. hope with

saint anthony's is serving every day along with chicken, vegetables and a whole lot of brownies. >> this christmas in san francisco, melanie woodrow, abc seven news in oakland. >> two restaurants showed off the giving spirit of the holiday. we visited jacqueline square, where the owner of chicken and waffles opened up his establishment to feed families in need. derek johnson, simply said it's something he had to do. >> i feel it's an obligation of every business, especially small business, to support the community and when i volunteered in the past, i go to shelters and i just wanted to open the restaurant up where people could sit down, have more of a family feel and they can get served. >> yep. all right. nearby, the owner of mama t's in oakland, tina johnson, also passed out free meals. she's been doing this for 16 years. this year, mama t's handed out about 300 warm meals. this is what we love to see. >> especially when those in need on holidays. it's just nice to

get a warm meal. >> and the food is good. yeah, and let me tell you, the house of chicken and waffle. >> yeah, it looks good. >> mhm. good for them. >> good morning everybody. if you have to travel today it's not looking too bad across the country. no intense storm systems brewing. here's the west coast. if you have traveled to the pacific northwest. it's a blend of sun and clouds from vegas to phenix. we are dry in the upper 50s to the mid 60s. quite chilly from fargo to kansas city. we'll have temperatures in the 30s with a mix of rain and snow, and along the east coast, the carolinas especially. we've been in and out of the showers the past 24 hours. that continues. even some thunderstorms are possible around pittsburgh, with fog in new england. so take to the skies just know that we're not tracking any huge delays on the horizon today. back here at home. locally, it's just a really cloudy day. we're dry today before showers return tomorrow. upper 50s to the lower 60s for daytime highs under limited sunshine tonight after midnight we'll start to see some light showers move into the north bay with that cover of clouds. we'll have our temperatures in the upper 40s to the mid 50s. let's bring in the

park holds a special place in the hearts of many. and for those who take part in bringing it to life, the love is on another level. >> i love bringing my friends and family around and showing them like i painted that i helped build that. >> you don't understand what it takes to create this display a bond built not by choice but by necessity. >> a second dui left san jose's catherine thompson at a crossroads between jail time and community service. the santa clara county sheriff's work program brought her here. santa san jose workshop, the operational warehouse of christmas in the park. >> when i was ordered to my 60 days of community service, the judge mandated three days a week, he said. i firmly believe you need more structure in your life and the structure that working here gave me actually really did help put my life back into perspective and help me focus on what i wanted to do once i had completed my job here. >> thompson was just one of the dozens of weekly participants with nonviolent misdemeanors in the program that has been a part of christmas in the park for nearly half its existence. the duties include general cleanup of pathways and fences,

maintenance and upkeep of displays, and keeping the holiday cheer alive in san jose. >> we would not exist without them. they're not just picking up trash. they're doing something that 700,000 people a year will appreciate when they come to christmas in the park. >> the program also gives participants an alternative sentence. other than jail time and the opportunity for a second chance. >> that is our main goal and our belief in the individuals that we serve. that ability to self reflect and know that they're more than what has happened in their life. we have to remember that almost everybody who comes into jail is going to get out, and the three things we want them to have is a job, a purpose and a community. >> the jail system is all always known for taking. it's good to give back to the community. >> thompson completed her time and now has a new job and is getting married and this christmas she could walk through the park knowing the impact it left on her life. >> it makes christmas in the park so much more special to me than it already was. and it was a big part of my christmas memories and a big part of my core. like san jose identity. and now it's cemented in that in

portezuelo hill to central marin, and the whole ride all the way to the golden gate bridge is fog free, and at the limit. no delays. overall take a look at the green. even out of the central valley. so if you've got somewhere to be at 530 this morning yet, it's pretty, pretty easy going out there. >> kumasi thank you. sue dreams of a white christmas became a nightmare for thousands of people traveling across the middle of the country, people traveling to the central and upper midwest are dealing with snow covered roads, spinouts, and airport frustration, delays and cancellations are building up. here's reporter jen sullivan reports a powerful storm pummeling parts of the plains and upper midwest. >> more than 725,000 people across south dakota, parts of colorado and nebraska under a blizzard warning monday, omaha could see between 5 to 11in of snow by tuesday. the weather crippling christmas travel, the slick and dangerous conditions causing multiple semis to jackknife on interstate 80,

forcing officials to close eastbound lanes between grand island and lincoln. the nebraska department of transportation tweeting a warning to drivers not to travel the same system, causing dense fog in chicago and snarling travel plans. >> it's just a lot of disappointment, man posted left yesterday. i'm just trying to get to my family in texas. >> the low visibility causing dozens of flights to be canceled or delayed at chicago's midway airport. >> it's terrible. i'm just i'm just keep trying and keep a smile. keep a positive outlook to keep from crying midway is the fourth busiest hub for southwest airlines, the weather causing at least 58 flights to be canceled. >> a spokesperson for the airline saying they have all hands on deck to find alternative flights for passengers. i'm jenn sullivan, reporting. >> fire investigators are expected to be back at the scene after a fire ripped through a commercial building in los altos. it broke out at the corner of el camino real and san antonio road early christmas morning. fortunately, no one was

paycheck away from homelessness. >> david smith, better known as pastor dave, has been working with the homeless population for more than three decades in that time, he says, a lot has changed. >> ten years ago, god bless you. ten years ago, it was people from the ages of 45 to 60. now you're seeing men and women in their late early 20s. and in our program, we have of, you know, 19 and 20 year old as we get seeing a lot of young mothers. >> pastor dave says that the bay area rescue mission, they don't just believe in handouts, but instead what he calls hand ups. they offer more than just food and shelter. their year long vocational program helps people get off the streets and on their feet. comfort is a graduate of their culinary arts program. >> i'm so grateful they have a program like this and richmond to be able to help individuals. they need. >> but tonight the focus is christmas and community. >> but it's nice to share a meal, and it's nice to share a
