hope you had a happy holiday. and we're going to see what today has in store. yeah good morning. >> it's really quiet out there when it comes to the forecast. we have a lot of cloud cover upstairs but no thick fog to deal with this morning. a live look from sutro tower. good vision of the golden gate bridge this morning. and when we look at temperatures not too chilly, we're not finding 30s on the board. this morning, more of us in the 40s and low 50s. certainly take the heavier jacket with you this morning. you don't need the rain gear. you can leave that home today. that's a different story tomorrow. we'll talk about that in a second. here's how the day shapes up. it's about cloud cover, limited sunshine, but we are dry today. it's mostly cloudy this afternoon. temperatures in the 50s and low 60s. let's see how we're doing on the roads with sue. this morning. good morning. >> and just as quiet on the roads, drew, we'll take a look at the eastshore freeway, which is one of the busiest stretches. and you can see all those gaps between the headlights. so yeah, not quite as many people out and about this morning. it's a quiet week. if you're making your way past the golden gate fields and berkeley and emeryville and this is your destination, the bay

bridge, or at least headed there to get into san francisco. lots of cars, but they're moving at the limit. no delays going into san francisco. so in fact, we'll take a look outside. all the green, green is great. and if you have to be up and out this early tuesday morning, it's not a bad way to go. kumasi thank you. >> sue. entire livelihoods for a group of small businesses in los altos turned upside down. we first brought you this story as breaking news yesterday morning right here on abc seven. that's when fire crews were called to an early morning two story shopping center fire at the corner of west el camino real. thankfully, nobody was inside the building at the time, but this morning, danger still remains. abc seven news reporter lena howland joining us live this morning with the latest on this. lena >> kumasi fire officials tell us even the morning after there is still some concern that this building could collapse outwardly, that is why there is still such a large perimeter set up around this building, still blocked off at this hour. now, the fire started about 24 hours

ago, just before 5:00 on christmas morning. during the firefight, there was some structural collapse, including the roof and the hvac systems. so firefighters were pulled to battle the flames from the outside, taking firefighters until the afternoon to get this fully contained. business owners tell us there's at least ten other businesses that were in this shopping center, including a salon, a bakery and sat prep center, and a judo and martial arts school. i'm in shock still. >> you know, i just opened up my business. it's only been a year, so it was starting to go really well, you know, great location, nice building. and then this. the santa clara county deputy fire chief says if the building contents have cooled off by sometime later this morning, then firefighters can take a closer look inside. >> they haven't been able to make entry since before the roof collapsed. firefighters also

tell us the cause of this fire is still under investigation. at this time. but the good news is that no one was injured. live in los altos lena howland abc seven news. >> happy to hear that. thank you. lena. now to the holiday travel rush going on right now. this is a live look at sfo and san jose. minetta international airport. according to data from tracker flightaware.com. com 14 flights have been delayed. only one cancellation so far at sfo. at sjc, travelers are looking at 12 delays and no cancellations this morning. now it is a different story when it comes to air travel on christmas day. sfo and sjc combined saw more than 120 delays. each one of them had a canceled flight. now let's look at our abc seven oakland airport camera. oakland international saw more than 40 delays yesterday. more than ten flights got canceled. but right now, just 11 delays this morning . nationally, winter weather is causing headaches for americans traveling today. the midwest already experiencing blizzard conditions impacting those who

are driving cross country flight delays and cancellations are limited for now. abc news reporter liz landers has more on the holiday travel conditions from washington. this morning. >> a wintry weather storm is hitting the heartland, bringing blizzard conditions around the holidays that was i-80 at a standstill for hours yesterday in nebraska, when whiteout conditions caused dozens of crashes, 50 mile per hour winds shut down part of i-90 highway in south dakota. christmas day. to these conditions expected to cause travel delays on the roads and in the skies. as americans are eagerly back to traveling for the holidays. 157 flights within an into or out of the u.s. canceled so far, and 2111 delayed as of late afternoon monday, according to flightaware . one airline mix up leaving a six year old boy in the wrong city. >> they told me, no, he's not in this flight. he missed his flight. i said, no, he could not miss his flight because i have

to check in. >> tag spirit airlines accidentally sent an unaccompanied minor from philadelphia to orlando instead of his correct destination of fort myers, florida. spirit airlines saying the child was always under the care and supervision of a spirit team member. and as soon as we discovered the error, we took immediate steps to communicate with the family and reconnect them. and it has been a record year for airline travel. tsa says that they have seen 12% more travelers this year than last. in washington, liz landers, abc news developing news president biden is ordering the us military on yesterday to carry out air strikes in iraq. >> officials say it was one of three options given to the president in a call with defense secretary lloyd austin, according to the white house. the strikes targeted three locations used by iranian backed militants. the strike was called in retaliation for a drone attack that injured three us service members in northern iraq . one of them is listed in

critical condition. new developments in the war between israel and hamas, as the civilian death toll keeps rising, there is a new cease fire plan being offered so far, there is little, if any, support for it. abc news reporter andrew dymburt has the latest. this morning. >> despite growing international calls for a ceasefire, israel is forging ahead with its bombing campaign in gaza. prime minister benjamin netanyahu, who during a surprise visit with his troops, proclaimed we are not stopping netanyahu, saying the war will continue until hamas is destroyed. just hours earlier, one of the deadliest airstrikes for civilians since the war began, the hamas run gaza health ministry says at least 70 people were killed in an airstrike on this refugee camp. dozens of women and children among the victims. also over the weekend, at least 17 israeli soldiers were killed, sparking renewed protests in israel to do a vote. the prime minister was heckled in parliament by families of israeli hostages held by hamas.

>> we need someone to tell us what they're going to do. we need everyone to know that romi and many more hostages are still had held in gaza, and we want people to remember them and to not forget that they're there and they need to come home. >> neighboring egypt is now proposing a new ceasefire plan. it includes a mediated release of hostages and the formation of a new palestinian government in gaza. neither side outright rejected the offer, raising hopes for a new round of diplomacy. but there's also growing concern about a wider conflict in the region. iran says a high ranking iranian general was killed during an israeli airstrike in syria yesterday. an iranian political group now calling for revenge. the us is hoping to work with israel to scale down operations in gaza. axios reports. one of prime minister netanyahu's top confidants will visit the white house today, where officials plan to discuss a time frame for the next phase of the war.

including people who were never convicted or prosecuted. this applies to simple possession, attempted possession, and use of marijuana on federal land and in washington, d.c. anyone who needs proof of a pardon will need to apply for a certificate for a certificate from the justice department. happening today. the final season of thoroughbred racing kicking off at golden gate fields in the east bay. the track farewell season is ending on a lackluster note. the chronicle is reporting purses have been cut by at least 25, and stakes races were cut from 15 to 2. officials say the cuts are due to a roughly $3 million deficit, and the track's scheduled shuttering on june 9th. gates opened at 10 a.m. the first race is set for 12:15 p.m. once the calendar flips to 2024, a slate of new laws is set to hit the books here in california, and many of them are aiming to help you save money. so here are a few of the

policies going into place. minimum wage is getting increase to $16 an hour for all employers. fast food employers are required to pay workers a minimum of $20 in and $20 an hour starting april 1st, health care workers are seeing an increase in pay to $18 an hour. more sick time coming to california. workers sb 616 ensures workers will get at least five days or 40 hours of sick leave every year, which is up from the standard three day minimum or 24 hours a year. the new law aims to standardize sick leave policy nationwide and. a ban on junk fees goes into effect july 1st. sb 478 prohibits the act of deceptively advertising low prices and then tacking on additional required fees, either in the fine print or toward the end of your transaction. state attorney general rob bonta says california now has the most effective piece of legislation in the nation to tackle that problem. also going into effect, starting july 1st, a ban on expensive security deposits, landlords with more than two

rental properties will not be able to require deposits that cost more than a single month's rent. landlords that own only two properties, with a total of four units, will be exempt from this ab 12, introduced by san francisco assemblymember matt haney, was signed into law back in october. can you imagine if a gingerbread man came to life? one person in florida capitalized on the idea recently . check it out. so this woman dressed up in the inflatable gingerbread man costume wanted to surprise the amazon driver that had just delivered the package to her house. so she just standing there minding her business. this man is out here just trying to deliver packages in time for the holiday. no, and he got a surprise. but the person recording said the whole prank made the driver's day. >> i did it. i think so i like when i like when there's, like

just a really cloudy today. upper 50s to the lower 60s for our daytime highs. now tonight we'll start to see showers move into the north bay after midnight. we'll keep the cloud cover overhead. that will act like a blanket this time of the year. not too chilly with most of us staying in the low to mid 50s overnight. here's the abc seven storm impact scale. it's a level one for wednesday. a light storm, scattered showers and isolated downpours. the biggest impact will be slick travel as you go about your day tomorrow. here's future weather 8:00 in the morning. the rain is in the north bay and then we see those showers start to spread south and east throughout the middle part and afternoon on wednesday. wednesday evening will still be dodging some drops before the system moves out of here. by the end of the day tomorrow. but rainfall on the lower end, some higher totals in the north bay, where the rain will linger a little bit longer. some scattered downpours are possible up to half of an inch in parts of the north bay, and then the numbers go down as that system moves south and east, less than a quarter of an inch around the bay shoreline, most likely for most cities. here's the accuweather seven day forecast for the next seven days. for

>> the first year we did it, we probably fed maybe about 100 people, and now, um, the highest we go we've done as many as 300 people come by to be greeted by her team of volunteers, some take the food back to encampments, others return to a senior center around the corner. >> people like jimmy brooks, who says this is the only meal he gets on christmas. >> i'd be locked in. i won't have any. i probably won't have no christmas dinner this one to go for you guys at jack london square, the home of chicken and waffles, was the home of low income families in need of a hearty meal. >> oakland native and restaurant owner derrick johnson says it's something he has to do. >> i feel it's an obligation of every business, especially small business, to support the community. and when i volunteer, appeared in the past, i'd go to shelters and i just wanted to open the restaurant up where people could sit down, have more of a family feel and they can get served. he teams up with bishop brandon reams of the center of hope community church in east oakland. >> it's a very difficult time.

even tracy to dublin west. 580 you don't see those speeds very often in 24 minutes. >> thank you. sue. fire investigators are expected to be back at the scene of a fire that ripped through a commercial building in los altos. it broke out at the corner of el camino real and san antonio road early christmas morning. thankfully, nobody was inside the building at the time, but this morning, crews are still monitoring it. abc seven news reporter lena howland joining us live there this morning with the latest lena. >> kumasi fire officials tell us there is still a concern that this building could collapse outwardly, which explains why el camino real is still partially shut down more than 25 hours after the fire. you can see some of the fencing extending into the road as part of the perimeter. i want to go now to the dramatic scene just after the fire started, right around 450 yesterday morning. during the firefight, there was some structural collapse, including the roof and the hvac systems, so firefighters were pulled to

battle the flames from the outside, taking firefighters until the afternoon to get this fully contained. business owners tell us there's at least ten other businesses that were in this shopping center, including a salon, a bakery and sat prep center, and a judo and martial arts school. we also talked to a manager for a construction company that had an office on the second floor. >> devastating. devastating. i still can't believe it. it's gone. >> did the fact that we have a lot of fire damage the building is structurally unsafe, so we've moved back to more, giving it a perimeter. fire officials tell us they haven't been able to get inside to assess the damage since the roof collapsed in the middle of the fire yesterday. >> they say if the building contents have cooled off by sometime later on this morning, then they can take a closer look inside. firefighters also tell us the cause of this fire is still under investigation.

however no one was hurt. live in los altos. lena howland, abc seven news. >> thank you. lena well, dreams of a white christmas became a nightmare for thousands traveling across the middle of the country. people traveling to the central and upper midwest are now dealing with snow covered roads, snow spinouts, airport frustration as delays and cancellations are building. here's reporter jenn sullivan. reporter a powerful storm pummeling parts of the plains and upper midwest. >> more than 725,000 people across south dakota, parts of colorado and nebraska under a blizzard warning monday, omaha could see between 5 to 11in of snow by tuesday. the weather crippling christmas travel and the slick and dangerous conditions causing multiple semis to jackknife on interstate 80, forcing officials to close eastbound lanes between grand island and lincoln. the nebraska department of transportation tweeting a warning to drivers not to travel the same system, causing dense fog in chicago and

snarling travel plans. >> it's just a lot of disappointment, man posted left yesterday. i'm just trying to get to my family in texas. >> the low visibility causing dozens of flights to be canceled or delayed at chicago's midway airport. >> it's terrible. i'm just i'm just keep trying to keep a smile , keep a positive outlook to keep from crying. >> midway is the fourth busiest hub for southwest airlines, the weather causing at least 58 flights to be canceled, a spokesperson for the airline saying they have all hands on deck to find alternative flights for passengers. i'm jenn sullivan, reporting. >> your voice, your vote. an effort to make california the second state to remove former president donald trump from the 2024 primary ballot is not happening, at least for now. california's secretary of state, shirley weber, says she will look at all the options barring the u.s. supreme court's decision in the matter. a letter from the lieutenant governor earlier in the month urged weber to explore legal options. weber's response means nothing will happen until the supreme

court acts on colorado's ruling. the colorado supreme court disqualified trump from appearing on its state's ballot under the constitution's so-called insurrection clause. this holiday weekend, many in the community stepped up to help those in need and to build a better bay area. the bay area rescue mission in richmond is one of the organizations that did that. abc seven news reporter anser hassan shows us that they do much more than preparing a christmas meal. good morning everybody. >> welcome. >> as folks lined up for christmas dinner at the bay area rescue mission in richmond, behind the scenes cook comfort mensah makes sure to capture the holiday flavor. >> it's a holiday. christmas so we make sure everybody you know eats some ham and yam and corn, mashed potatoes, gravy, pie and salad. >> she knows how important this meal can be for those who are struggling a few years ago, she was in line for food and she says it isn't just about the meal, it's also about a sense of

belonging and being seen. >> very, very important, very important because you got a one going to depress and confuse. don't have no family. so when you come here, we all family together, there's no separation. so that makes it wonderful. i think that people have a misconception of the homeless population. >> i think a lot of people in the bay area are one paycheck away from homelessness. >> david smith, better known as pastor dave, has been working with the homeless population for more than three decades. in that time, he says, a lot has changed . >> ten years ago, god bless you. ten years ago, it was people from the ages of 45 to 60. now you're seeing men and women in their late early 20s and in our program, we have you know, 19 and 20 year old, as we're seeing a lot of young mothers. pastor dave says that the bay area rescue mission, they don't just

condition led to what doctors are calling a 1 in 1,000,000 pregnancy. kelsey hatcher and her husband recently welcomed two baby girls to the family. earlier this month. hatcher has a condition known as uterine didelphys, which means she has two uteri. despite the condition, she already had three kids. then she got pregnant with two embryos, one in each of her uteri. >> as soon as she moved the ultrasound line to the other side of my belly, like she didn't even have the time to say anything, i immediately said, oh my gosh, there's another one! after 20 hours of labor, hatcher

displays, and keeping the holiday cheer alive in san jose. >> we would not exist without them. they're not just picking up trash. they're doing something that 700,000 people a year will appreciate when they come to christmas in the park. the program also gives participants an alternative sentence other than jail time and the opportunity for a second chance. >> that is our main goal and our belief in the individuals that we serve. that ability to self reflect and know that they're more than what has happened in their life. we have to remember that almost everybody who comes into jail is going to get out, and the three things we want them to have is a job, a purpose, and a community. >> the jail system is all always known for taking it's good to give back to the community. >> thompson completed her time and now has a new job and is getting married. and this christmas she could walk through the park knowing the impact it left on her life. >> it makes christmas in the park so much more special to me than it already was. and it was a big part of my christmas memories and a big part of my core. like san jose identity. and now it's cemented in that in san jose, dustin dorsey, abc

west bank. so far, though, no indication israel or hamas is receptive to this proposal. the white house national security council is declining to comment. number six, the national park service is replacing railings at the base of the golden gate bridge. the new railings started to go up along marine drive at foot point. they're made of aluminum and they kind of blend into that grayish background. there the complete project will be finished by late january. at number seven. today is the first day of kwanzaa. the seven day celebration observes seven core principles of african american heritage and values. it runs until new year's day. there is a celebration at city hall today. everybody is welcome to come out . >> what a wonderful time of the year. >> i know it has been good and i'm yeah, i appreciate it. you know, the advice to put your decor away. but i'm not ready. no >> yeah. >> another week at least. strap it down, make sure it's tight. >> just make sure it doesn't blow away a lot of inflatables out there that can easily get wafted into the air. and if not, just bring it back out thursday.
