also a major threat. this truck spinning out of control crashing into an ambulance. luckily, no injuries were reported. in south dakota, cars stuck on the side of the road, some in ditches. officials closing i 90 after blizzard conditions. authorities in denver, colorado, forced to shut down portions of i-70 after slick hazardous conditions. an ice storm in fargo, north dakota, leaving 7,000 people in the dark. parts of the storm system making its way east, already impacting areas in the northeast with fog. in boston sky scrapers peeking out from the dense fog. overnight a flight transporting over 200 migrants from texas to new york city was diverted to philadelphia due to weather conditions. that storm not done with us yet. as i said, it's moving to the east coast. right now new york city, you can see completely veiled in fog there. mild conditions on the way along with the heavy moisture.

let's time out the rain here. so as we push into wednesday, today, this afternoon around 12 p.m., look where it's hitting the heaviest. we see colors like orange, yellow, red, washington, d.c. mid-atlantic. then by 10 p.m. tonight the heaviest of the rain making its way into philadelphia, new york, new england. they could see anywhere from 1 to 2 inches, coming down very quickly. that's going to lead to the potential for flooding, even higher totals, 2 to 3 inches in some hot spots like philadelphia, about 1 to 2 in new york. that's something to keep in mind for those who will be headed home today. they could be dealing with flooding on the roads. >> it's a mess out there. thank you for that report. that storm threatening to throw a wrench into the so far smooth travel for millions of people as they make their way home after christmas or head out for the new year's weekend. transportation correspondent gio benitez is live at newark airport with more on this story. gio, good morning to you. >> reporter: hey, demarco, good morning. there is a very good chance that we could see ground stop up and down the east coast at airports there because of that weather

somara was just talking about. with airports across the country looking a whole lot like this, very very busy. this morning a mad dash to get back home after millions of travellers hit the roads and skies for christmas. >> you've got to expect it to be crazy. >> reporter: the tsa screening more than 14.5 million people at airports between last wednesday when the holiday rush began through christmas day monday. that's almost 2 million more than last year. >> so tsa has been going really well. long but smooth. >> reporter: travel itself also mostly smooth with airlines like american and united reporting their best performance ever. but tsa and faa staffing issues creating hiccups at atlanta's hartsfield jackson international airport, the busiest in the world. our faith abubey was there. >> you can see the tsa screening line is wrapped around the atrium. it goes all the way over there. some travellers taking me it's taken them two hours from the time they walked through the doors to drop off their bags to getting through the security lines.

>> we've never seen it this crazy. we live here, so we know to get here way early. >> reporter: the tsa telling abc news, we did have an unusual number of employees call in sick today. additionally, there were blizzard warnings issued, creating a very busy morning at atl. >> i think we're going to wait probably twice as long. >> reporter: in denver, ground stops because of weather and staffing at air traffic control. >> super busy. >> it's organized crazy. >> yeah. >> reporter: and the next busiest day for air travel is this friday so make sure you prepare for that. meanwhile, let's talk about the roads now. they will be busy today between 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. so make sure that you're getting on the road early or very late at night for the best chance at avoiding that traffic. but the gas prices though, they're looking pretty good. $3.12 a gallon, that's the national average. that's a bit up over last week but still down about $0.13 from last month, whit. >> we'll take that silver lining. thank you. now to talks between the white house and leaders in the middle

east about the way forward in gaza as the fighting intensifies and the u.s. responds to another round of attacks by iran backed militants fueling fear of a wider conflict. britt clennett is joining us from israel with the latest. britt, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, whit. yeah, president biden spoke with his qatari counter part to discuss how to bring back the more than 100 hostages still held in gaza, including americans. overnight president biden speaking with qatar's amir talking about the urgent effort to secure the release of all remaining hostages held in hamas including american citizens. and the need to boost humanitarian aid to gaza. the high stakes call coming a day after top israeli official met with secretary of state blinken at the white house, discussing military operations and the possible return of hostages. but this urgent effort growing more complicated this morning, as israel expands its ground offensive to central gaza launching over 200 rockets in a day. hamas saying more than 250

people were killed in the last 24 hours. israeli army chief of staff now warning the war will continue for many more months. this amy rising concerns that the conflict in the region could grow even wider. israel's defense minister saying the country is now under attack from seven different fronts including gaza, the west bank, lebanon and iran. protesters taking to the streets after reports from state media claiming an israeli air strike in syria killed a top iranian general directly responsible forearming proxy groups in the region. iranian officials vowing revenge. u.s. central command confirming tuesday it shot down ten more drones and five missiles launched by the houthi rebels. the u.s. military carried out multiple air strikes in iraq in retaliation for attacks by tehran linked militants. iran calling it a hostile act that infringed its sovereignty. eva? >> britt, thank you. now to security preparations for new year's eve.

an estimated 1 million revellers will head to times square this weekend and law enforcement officials say that makes it an attractive target for violence. abc news senior investigative correspondent aaron katersky is in times square with more. good morning, aaron. >> reporter: good morning, eva. the eyes of the world are about to focus here. so that does make this event, the new year's eve ball drop in times square a potential target for attack. this morning new york city's getting ready for the biggest party of the year. >> 3, 2, 1! >> reporter: more than 1 million people are expected to cram into times square to watch the ball drop on new year's eve. the mayor said police will be prepared. >> there's always a serious concern around safety in new year's eve because there's a large number of people. the police department is on top of it. >> reporter: abc news has obtained a threat assessment by the fbi, nypd and other agencies that says the ball drop could

draw interest from malicious actors looking for targets of opportunity or lone offenders inspired by or reacting to the on going israel/hamas conflict. the security plan includes thousands of officers, miles of barricades plus drones, dogs and hundreds of cameras, all to keep the crowd safe. >> i think it's a pretty safe bet that someone is going to try to do something to distract or disrupt the event in times square. >> reporter: in recent years though, extremists have almost exclusively targeted law enforcement or military personnel. just a year ago at this very celebration a young man from maine attacked police officers with a knife as they worked a security check point. >> it's a real hercules task to manage that number of people without being heavy handed, but being protectors. >> reporter: one additional concern, possibility that demonstrations over the war in israel could disrupt. there's no specific threat and, demarco, crowds have been gathering here in times square since 1904 so the nypd has a

long history of keeping the event secure. demarco. >> we're hoping for the best. thank you very much. turning to the crisis at the border. secretary of state antony blinken is on his way for a meeting with mexico's president as another sprawling caravan heads to the u.s. border. jay o'brien has this story. good morning. >> reporter: demarco, good morning. with the situation at the southern border only worsening, u.s. officials say this urgent meeting will try to help address some of the root causes of the immigration crisis as well as tackle border security. this morning secretary of state antony blinken and homeland security secretary mayorkas traveling to a high stakes meeting with the mexican president to address the on going immigration crisis at the southern border. administration officials expected to push the mexican government to step up immigration enforcement within their own borders. the urgent meeting comes as

migrant border crossings hit historic highs. border patrol reporting on average nearly 10,000 apprehensions a day last week. and these images, an apparent caravan of an estimated 6,000 migrants now making their way to the u.s. border. norma diaz is traveling with children saying he's fighting for the well-being of his family. white house officials blaming volatility in central and south american countries. >> there's a lot of factors. part of that is, of course, dealing with instability. >> reporter: but republicans blasting the president. >> the policies of the biden administration are attracting people from all over the world. we have to change those policies to secure our border. >> reporter: back in the u.s., border patrol in places like eagle pass, texas, overwhelmed. this weekend buses carrying migrants nearly 130 in total stopping in suburbs outside chicago. the latest in a series of migrants transported to northern cities by texas governor greg abbott. all of this comes as the white house is still locked in tense

negotiations with republicans and democrats on capitol hill over immigration reform which is now directly linked to any future aid for israel and ukraine. and with congress out on recess, sources tell us there are no active negotiations and no in person meetings are expected until at least the new year. whit? >> still gridlock on that conversation. all right, jay, thank you. now to the holiday sales score card. despite lingering effects of inflation, new numbers show americans spent more this year not only on holiday gifts but on themselves. morgan norwood is here now. some encouraging signs for the economy. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, whit. that's right. from winter wardrobes to fine dining, holiday shoppers really showed up easing immediate fears of an economic slowdown. overall consumer spending grew by 3.1% compared to the same time last year. but what were we actually buying? it wasn't the fancy pair of earrings or new tv's. jewelry and electronic purchases shrunk.

instead shoppers went big on clothing, food gatherings around the table, spending at restaurants jumped nearly 8%. shoppers also preferred to ask the cart versus push the cart as online spending was up 6.3% compared to in store shopping 2.2%. so what about the economy for the year ahead? let's talk about this. americans continue to spend. inflation which hit its highest level in 40 years earlier this year actually close to 3%. so people are getting jobs. unemployment is at a 50 year low. these are really good signs ahead of 2024. remember the 2023 recession that experts were predicting? where? we didn't see that. but if there was anything that initially gave economists pause heading into the holidays, it was the record high credit card debt americans picked up once inflation spiked. now at more than $1 trillion. that is trillion with a t, guys. >> wow. just because they spend the money doesn't mean they have the money. right?

>> well, here's one way to figure that out. figure that out. here's hoping one more christmas present is on the way. the powerball jackpot. the prize is now $685 million. andrew dymburt is here with all the details. i love when the jack pot gets big. >> so do i. we have more ahead including the way to handle holiday returns without leaving your home. that is coming up. >> important information. we do move to that abc news exclusive. new twist in the case of alex murdaugh the disgraced south carolina lawyer who killed his wife and son. the outspoken court clerk now under fire after writing a book about the trial and the murdaugh family. trevor ault has details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, whit. so this county clerk in alex murdaugh's murder trial has already been in the spotlight. his attorney said she tampered with the jury. which she and prosecutors deny. now there's new controversy. she wrote a book about the trial and now seems to admit some of the words were stolen. this morning yet another twist and scandal surounding the trial of convicted murderer alex murdaugh. once again centered around the county clerk who read his verdict. >> guilty. >> guilty. >> guilty. >> reporter: in the after math of the bombshell trial, becky hill co-wrote "behind the doors of justice the

murdaugh murders" in which she detailed her role in the trial and decades long personal relationship with the murdaugh family. she's now accused of plagiarizing a section of that book. >> i was shocked. i was disappointed. i was sad. >> reporter: neil gordon is the book's co-author. he said he discovered what he called the ethical gap while reviewing thousands of hill's e-mails that had been released to reporters through freedom of information act requests. >> she said she felt like she was under a lot of deadline pressure and she remembered that that particular article was on her e-mail. >> reporter: this screen shot shows in february hill received a lengthy excerpt of an article by a bbc journalist about the trial. it appears hill copied from it directly for the opening of the book, prompting gordon to publicly apologize to the bbc and the reporter. >> i decided to look at our book because the words were very familiar to me.

and sure enough, it was the preface of our book. i was sick to my stomach. >> reporter: hill had spoken about the trial on numerous occasions, including giving an interview in a netflix documentary series about the case. >> i had a feeling from our time together with the jury that it was not going to take our jury long to make the decision in this case. >> reporter: in a statement responding to these new allegations, hill's attorneys say she's deeply remorseful for this unfortunate lapse in judgment. this comes just months after alex murdaugh's attorneys had accused hill of jury tampering saying she pressured jurors to reach a quick verdict in hopes of securing a book deal for herself, a claim she denied and prosecutors called unfounded and not credible. >> because of the seriousness of these charges, when the judge holds the evidentiary hearing to consider whether to grant a new trial, becky hill probably won't be able to testify. if she does, she's going to risk being cross-examined and her

after 33 seconds. >> i learned that i need to be more prepared. >> up next, judy. >> come on in. >> says they have extinguishers but admits she's not sure how to actually use one. >> oh god. there's a lock on it. >> she forgets to pull the pin. >> i don't know how to do it. >> but with a bit of help is finally able to douse the flames after a nail biting 44 seconds. though experts caution if you can't put out a fire in 30 second, you should get out. >> it's so important to act as quickly as you can. dial 911, get the fire extinguisher, aim at the fire, try to put the fire out and then leave. >> up last, mom of four lisa has three fire extinguishers at home. >> put out that fire right over there. >> but once she gets the extinguisher. >> how do you pull the pin? >> she struggles for almost 20 seconds before she is able to tug it free and put out the blaze. >> remember the word pass. pull the pin.

aim at the base of the fire. squeeze the handle. sweep side to side. but before you even reach for that extinguisher, firefighters say the first thing you need to do is call 911. wow. i had lots of practice ahead of time. >> you looked good. >> but look, you should keep at least one fire extinguisher on each floor of your home, easily accessible areas. check expiration date. they do go bad over time. also experts say fire extinguishers are just one part of a complete home fire safety plan which should include multiple ways to evacuate your home. every family should have a plan. you actually need to practice that plan. >> if you can't put it out in 30 seconds, get out. >> exactly. call 911 first. >> how hard is it to pull that pin out? >> some can be tough especially the industrial ones like we have in this building.

>> good morning. >> i am so excited to talk to you about this. you say beyond the scale isn't about losing weight but gaining a different perspective. >> exactly. for so long, many of us are so focused on the number on the scale. this is about focusing on other victor is, other mile stones. some women told us after they reached their goals, they can do cannon balls in the poolwith their family, walking up the stairs. you are more likely to stick with your progress and reach your goal. >> you can embrace that lifestyle change and the impact that it has. one person that you decided to feature is michelle rice nelson. what was it about her story that was so compeling? >> michelle's story is a classic case of putting everyone else first. you have to learn to put on the oxygen mask for yourself. she was caring for her mother with alzheimer's, caring for her children. often she fell to the bottom of the list. when she made that change, she found' she had so much more energy. although her mother sadly passed away.

that energy allowed her to cope with her grief and even find joy. >> let's get to it. michelle is here ready to tell us all about her transformation. come on out, michelle. [ applause ] >> yay, michelle. >> wow! >> wow. >> get out here. looking good and feeling good. you see this picture. you say it holds a lot of significance. why? >> this picture represents a very sad period in my life when things were really out of control for me. i was the caregiver to my mom, who suffered from alzheimer's dementia. i am a person who lived with disabilities. i have spinal degeneration which has caused paralysis in my right hand and my right foot so i don't have full functionality on my right side. i have low vision.

but i had to care for my mom because she needed me. i'm also an older mother to a young child. during the pandemic, i had to home school him. so all of these factors combined created the perfect storm for me to gain the weight and to be depressed. >> what was the turning point? >> the turning point actually was when i was diagnosed with prediabetes and both of my parents had been folks with diabetes. my father died due to complications related to diabetes. so with all the other health conditions that i have going on, that i didn't need. so hence my weight loss journey. >> i'm sure there are so many people listening to your story and shaking their heads because it's something they feel and they understand so deeply. you say part of your success has been because of nutri system. you will be featured in their commercials. but also walking. >> walking.

i am going to start with nutri system. when i gained the weight, i first considered bariatric surgery. when i thought long and hard about the long term complications, i said no. nutri system was there. it seemed easy. with my chaotic life, it was a program that fit right in because i did not have to think about anything. i was already thinking about everything for everyone so the food was delivered to me. i had breakfast lunch dinner snacks everything was set out. that was good. nutri system combined with walking daily. i walk rain, sleet, shine, it does not matter. i know people think i'm crazy when they see me but i walk. that's part of what i do daily. it's like oxygen, food, water, oxygen. this is something i need. >> we don't have much time left but i want to get this question. what's your advice to others who want to make a change? >> my advice to others is, if you fall down, don't stay down.

[ applause ] bravo! >> you are joining us with a four point holiday audit. >> that's right. we are going to get into the new year taking stock of our mental health, our financial health, physical health and our dreams. what are our goals in the new year? >> let's do it. >> how did you develop this? >> i did the audit myself when i was an attorney. before joining as a contributor to the gma family, i was a lawyer. i really needed to take stock of not feeling like i had energy, not feeling like i was living my passion. there may be some folks who are getting curious about the new

year and this is kind of a framework to enter into that. >> people know you as a fitness instructor from peloton. what do you think people should be thinking about when it comes to their fitness as they head into the new year? >> we're listening. >> folks who are watching, they say really? yes, consistency is more important than intensity. recently i had to take my own advice of being nimble. you might plan for a 30 minute workout and the day escapes from you, do five, ten. christmas morning i was doing a ten minute core workout with my daughter playing with her toys. being nimble is incredibly important. start before you're ready. there's never going to be a great opportunity or time. no perfect time to get uncomfortable so start today. >> that's the physical. but also mental health is important. >> we know mental health is just as important as our physical health. i'm going to say something that might challenge some folks, but use your no to protect your yes. enter the new year saying no without guilt and yes without fear.

i also think that it's really important to be kinder to ourselves. that internal monologue, that's the most important conversation we're going to have. speak to yourself like you would a friend. >> that's so easier than done. >> i know, right? >> it takes practice. just like everything else, it takes practice. if you're running late and you think, i should have -- speak to yourself like you would a friend. it's important to eliminate the moments of friction throughout our day. what's a choice we can make today to make tomorrow better? >> so much friction. [ laughter ] all right. we got into the physical, the mental. now the financial health. what are some tips as people are approaching career and money goals? >> it's important for us to anchor it in the why. there are lots of ways we can talk about saving and financial health. i actually like rooting it in the narrative because then that makes the action items more achievable. begin with the end in mind. think about where you want to be in six months and a year and how you will be experiencing that vacation or being debt-free.

seeing ourselves in that place as the owner of the pen writing that story is crucial for financial health as well. >> we hear this time of year a lot of talk about life goals. how do you frame that? how do we get to that big picture? >> for me it comes in three parts. three tools in the super hero's tool kit to what i call dreamscaping. planning a dream that makes sense maybe even a little uncomfortable. number one is journalling. that's why i released welcome hustler. it is an empowerment journal that uses mantras. number two is the second create a mantra. create a word that you will attach to 2024 that will bring you out of the lower moments we all have. third incredibly important one is vision boarding. it's more than arts and crafts. it is a way to name it and claim it and crystallize what we want in the new year. >> aim it and claim it. you know me. >> i love your classes, by the way. >> thank you. >> thank you very much. good to see you as well.

now to the power of dreams. disney teamed up with make a wish to make 100 wishes come true. for myka, that dream was to be in nfl. look what happened when she got her wish. >> ready, set, hike! >> reporter: myka ellers is a massive kansas city chiefs fan. >> oh yeah! >> reporter: saying she dreams of some day playing in the nfl herself. >> i want to show girls who want to play that they can do what they want to do. >> reporter: born with a condition pulmonary stenosis, myka would endure two open heart surgeries when she was only a baby. >> i remember asking a nurse, please take care of my baby. >> what did you say to her as you were handing her off? >> bring her back to me. >> reporter: myka not only survived, but has since been thriving with sports one of her biggest passions, which is why last year make a wish and espn

[ laughter ] the trick is stale bread. lot of time people use fresh bread. it's too moist, doesn't soak up all the custard. stale bread works. whip that up for me. >> boom. >> there we go. there we go. get in there. >> you might get some whole eggs in here, too. apologize in advance. >> here's what it's supposed to look like. >> another trick here, people don't think about, squeeze the bread. let it really soak up that custard. tard. it will make it nice and moist like a flavorful piece of bread. just give it a little squeeze.
