residents, this triggered memories of last winter. >> just trying to barricade to make sure that we're in better hands than last year. i think it came kind of a surprise, um, last year with how high the water can get completely up to these houses with high tides and big waves expected again, firefighters plan to be out in the stinson beach area tomorrow on the peninsula. >> an example of the dangers of the surf today. the coast guard had to be called in to rescue a surfer. the north county fire authority says this happened off the coast of linda mar beach. the coast guard was able to help the person get out of the water, and the surfer is expected to be okay. >> the high tide this morning brought waves crashing over the seawall in miramar beach. in half moon bay, those waves washed all the way up to miramar beach restaurant and partially actually flooded the parking lot and for the next couplef ys here in the bay area, people should steer clear of the beach. the national weather service has issued a high surf warning, in effect until 3 a.m. tomorrow.

officials forecast extremely dangerous waves that could get as high as 40ft in some locations along the coast. experts are also warning about rip currents and sneaker waves. residents have been urged to stay away from beaches during this time of rough weather. despite these warnings, some people, of course, eager to see the high tides for themselves. >> first thing, when i woke up, i looked out on my gorgeous ocean view and i saw these huge, huge waves just breaking and i just had to get on my scooter and come down here and see what was going on. >> they are mesmerizing. obviously. the weather service says there may be impacts to nearby homes, businesses and some possible road closures as well. so abc seven news meteorologist sandyha patel is here with us with information about that high surf warning. >> sandy. yeah >> and kristen, the high surf warning is in effect for good reason. you just showed those pictures. but take a look at a live picture right now from our santa cruz camera. it is so mesmerizing to want to go closer, but stay out of the

water and never turn your back to the ocean, off the rocks, off the jetties. because the wave heights are still up there. earlier point sur had a wave height of about 28ft. the heights have come down, but still rough and dangerous. 17 footers right now. bodega bay that high surf warning until 3 a.m. tomorrow. large breakers 28 to 33ft, up to 40ft for favored areas. and that means dangerous swimming, surfing and still a risk of rip currents as we go. hour by hour, those wave heights will slowly come down as we're seeing. and by tomorrow at 6 a.m, they have come down considerably. but it is still not completely subsiding. we have a storm that's a level two that is coming in tomorrow. you can see it's already getting wound up. that's what's bringing us the rough surf as well. it's a level two, as i mentioned for tomorrow. rain heavy at times, strong winds and rough surf. still with us. a slight possible of thunder. i'll be back in just a few minutes. dan, to let you know. hour by hour, when the heaviestrillionain will hit. and

what other warnings and advisories you need to know about in just a few minutes. >> okay, sandhya. thank you. >> massive waves have swamped roads and businesses in santa cruz county's capitola village. the flooding comes less than a year after storm surf caused major damage in the area. abc seven news reporter, south bay reporter zach fuentes is in santa cruz county tracking the impact of the high waves. zach >> and kristen. thankfully the evacuation warnings that were in place here in santa cruz county have been lifted just under an hour ago. but it's been a difficult day for the county. and once again, capitola village is not an exception. we're on the esplanade right now where the oceanfront businesses are, businesses that are once again in recovery mode. jeff lantis is nearly back to square one, and his capitola business, the sandbar. it was devastated by january's high surf, forcing it to close for six months. now, almost a year later, high waves are once again flooding the village. the day before. this damaged, the city of capitola put in sand barriers trying to protect the businesses.

initially helpful, the protection didn't last very long, helped block us a bit, but one day is all it takes for this to be cleared out now. thursday. much of the repairs made by lantis have been undone. >> our floor is ruined. it'll take at least a month to repair. i would think the high surf forcing evacuation warnings in capitola village. >> the warnings extended through other parts of santa cruz county. >> we're seeing widespread coastal impacts from the high tides and extraordinary waves coming into low lying areas of the coast. >> those lower lying areas include rio del mar beach and seacliff state beach. in less than 24 hours, the areas were flooded with debris from high waves that came and went. we are expecting higher waves coming in and it only takes one for you to be washed out. >> we will not be able to rescue you if you go out. please feed the warning. >> the santa cruz county sheriff's office warning people enamored by the beauty of the waves that they could be deadly. >> with the waves being so powerful. if you turn your back for even a split second, you can be knocked over, swept away.

>> then he felt confident enough to look out at the waves. despite the warnings, there's still a sadness among locals over what their county has gone through in a short period of time. >> it's happening. happening a little more often. it seems like despite dealing with hit after hit to his business, lantis says he loves his location and has no plans to leave. >> do you want to stay doing your business here? oh, forever. >> never give a place up right on the ocean like this. jeff lantis staying positive there. >> i did speak with the capitola police chief who told me that while this is a major hit to the community, it's still not as bad as what it saw earlier this year, if you can believe that. but again, considering what these businesses and homeowners have gone through since that time, this is absolutely a major blow right now. live in capitola, zach fuentes, abc seven news zach, thank you. >> in the north bay now a downed tree took down some power lines and forced crews to close a road in fairfax. the large oak tree was blocking olema road about 100 customers in the area lost power. you can check out the abc seven bay area app for the

enforcement from the department of homeland security. >> we need to be aware that there are threats out there or there are, um, people that are out to do harm. but for san francisco, there's nothing credible. there's nothing specific, and there's nothing that's prohibiting us from from celebrating the new year. >> assistant san francisco police chief david lazar says while there is no credible threat to san francisco, the department is prepared there will be additional officers out and around all of the planned venues. >> the fireworks show along the embarcadero. but we'll have additional officers all throughout the city. >> the fbi lists concerns about domestic or jihadi extremists acting on their own, in addition to possible cyber attackers. the note indicates law enforcement is also concerned about drones being used. >> we do not recommend anyone bring out a drone, just adds a layer of complication. it's a homeland security issue. the fbi cited specific concerns related to san francisco, adding the large, unpermitted coastline and fireworks barges could be

targets, as sfpd says they are working in coordination with the u.s. coast guard and their marine unit to respond accordingly. >> alameda police chief nishat joshi is preparing to do the same. >> we are going to have our officers on patrols, they're going to be diligent. we're going to be looking for any information or any indication that our community is a threat. again, i want to reiterate, we don't have any specific information that our community is at risk free. palestine >> the document noted the current threat in environment is made more toxic and dangerous by the ongoing israel and hamas war. as the report notes, threats in hate speech have skyrocketed since the october 7th hamas attack and the fbi adds this follows the reemergence of isis and al qaeda propaganda online. >> when and if we think something's out of place, it's definitely everyone should report it now, the groups behind the protest that shut down the bay bridge last month say no demonstrations are planned this weekend, but that, quote could change. >> and of course, law

surf. >> and there's no place bigger than mavericks and half moon bay. >> the waves looked absolutely massive at and it was everything that, uh, we expected. it was really big. i would say maybe 40 to 60 foot waves. >> miguel blanco flew into town all the way from portugal to surf the historic waves of mavericks. it was difficult for us to see from our vantage point on the shoreline, but the servers painted an incredible picture of what it was like staring down a 40 foot wave. if it's your turn and you just got to go, you know, like when you see a big wave, you're kind of scared. >> but at the same time you're you're feeling like you should go and you go and you just go and enjoy the ride. >> for local iron banner, he wished he didn't have to share incredible waves like these with everyone else, but he recognizes the legacy of mavericks fans, the small surf town of princeton and half moon bay. >> it's like pretty gnarly. i mean, it's super big. people from all over portugal, brazil,

tahiti, hawaii, kai, lenny and his brother out there. yeah, a lot of a lot of amazing surfing going down. >> hbo was on hand creating a documentary of the day's events, but a look through the sails and mist shows crowds of spectators was here to catch the action as well. >> we're seeing some huge swells , big waves and some surfers that are crazy going out there. it was crazy enough to just watch the surfing, but hundreds took the two mile walk to the coastline from the town to line up and down the steep cliffs of the beach. >> san mateo county officials did what they can to suggest people stay away, but these waves brought them to the bay area from far and wide. >> it's amazing. yeah, we're pretty lucky here. pretty special place we live in. >> it certainly is. i mean, it might become a yearly event for this always. and when you see this, the question isn't why, it's why not. >> at mavericks and half moon bay, dustin dawsey, abc seven news. >> all right, active weather out there for sure.

>> and big sur for sure too. let's see how long this is going to last. >> meteorologist cindy patel tracking all of it for you around the bay area. >> sandhya absolutely. and dan and kristen, let's take a look at live doppler seven right now because we do have a lot of cloud cover out there. but there are some breaks in the clouds and some sun peeking through. i do want to show you very small little area of sprinkles north of our radar site. now i want to take you down towards carmel lagoon, where a flood advisory has been extended until 6 p.m. tonight. flooding has already occurred in this area this afternoon, and it's still possible around carmel river state beach parking lot and nearby neighborhoods. so this is still a concern. it's a combination of the high surf and the high tides that's leading to that flooding. and you can see a new storm is winding up here in the pacific, and that is going to be heading in our direction tomorrow. so we do have a coastal flood advisory that has also been extended until 2 p.m. tomorrow afternoon. soon. still, the potential for some minor low lying flooding right now. a

areas shaded tomorrow. 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. gusts to 50 miles an hour. you could see some power outages and downed trees so be aware of that. winds begin to pick up tomorrow morning out of the south, 25 to 30 miles an hour and even stronger by noontime. over 40 mile an hour winds. and then as we head into the afternoon, you're still seeing gusty winds around some of our inland areas. so this is not going to be just a coastal thing, but the strongest winds will be near the coast tomorrow morning. commute time. you have rain at 5 a.m. as we head into the afternoon. 1:00 some downpours in the north bay. rain beginning to move in along the coastline. 330 it's going to be pretty stormy across the region going into the evening hours, so if you're getting away tomorrow or you're commuting tomorrow, the best time to get away will be in the early part of the day, because later on in the afternoon and evening, it's going to be pretty stormy. saturday scattered showers continuing. those showers will be mainly through about noontime and then they'll be moving on out. so your weekend is not completely a washout in terms of rainfall estimates. most of you

california highway in tahoe is now linked to a missing persons case dating back 50 years. reporter orko manna explains how investigators finally got their break in the case. >> september six, 1970 was the last time anyone saw donna lass. the 25 year old south lake tahoe resident was on the job at the time. >> she was working as a nurse at the sahara tahoe, which is a casino on the nevada side that casino hotel is now the golden nugget. >> while the name has changed, what hasn't is the mystery surrounding lass's disappearance . >> old cases stay open until they're solved. >> south lake tahoe police chief david stevenson tells me a security supervisor at the hotel filed a missing persons report three days after last went missing. for 50 years, she remained lost until now placer county sheriff's office says a skull found in 1986 off of highway 20 near interstate 80 has been identified as las. but

what took so long at that time, the dna testing technology wasn't advanced enough to get a sample. stevenson also says dna from lassie's relatives was not collected until her sister gave a sample five years ago to enter a new cold case team made up of people from the placer county sheriff's and district attorney's offices. last week, the team sent the skull to the california department of justice, hoping new technology could i.d. it. >> they had those remains sampled for dna. it was processed, run through the system, and they were uh- cal doj was able to get a hit on those remains based on that familial dna that was uploaded. it matched with last, but it's still unclear how she died. it hasn't been proven to be a homicide at this point, but we're obviously treating it that way. >> so what happens next? even after more than five decades since donna last was last seen here, there are still no suspects. but police say they won't stop searching from here

to get a visa. yeah, okay. that's true. >> uh, look, you guys, fancy dinners are a common theme during the holidays. a formerly known michelin star restaurant is offering a new taste to its menu. to celebrate the new year. owner carrie blease and longtime chef nathan makowski have reopened their restaurant space for a third time. yes the san francisco eatery initially offered modern european cuisine. they eventually turned into a revolving door for chefs across the globe. after taking a hiatus during the pandemic. >> all right, now, carrie and chef nathan join us to talk about their their reimagined six course celebratory french inspired menu at lord stanley, which is a lovely name. are these the dishes? part of the new year's eve menu? ooh >> um, well, some of them are. and some of them aren't. we >> well, let's talk about the crab dish. yes. so the crab we have a salmon. >> i think. um, talk to us about what you're doing now. now that it's not that you know michelin and why you made that decision. and what is your focus?

>> well, we just kind of wanted to get back to doing what we did previous to covid and just being a restaurant. um, that is lord stanley. and focusing on the food that we like to cook and enjoy to serve guests. and that was basically it, you know, is what what is it? >> you know, what days are you open? how many days are you open during the week? are you back to a full schedule? >> we are going, yeah. >> sorry. yeah. um, we are actually opening seven days after the new year, which is exciting. um, we haven't been able to do that since pre-covid, so, um. yeah, we're excited to be back full force. um, so, yeah, after the new year, we're closed for a couple days. little rest, and then we'll be seven days moving forward. >> oh my gosh, can i just ask you about this? i don't know what it is. i don't know if you can see it. it's white. it appears to have some chives or onions on it. >> that's the crab dip right. >> the crab dip. oh that's good. tell us about that crab dip. >> um, just something fun and easy and approachable. it's, um, it's kind of. it's going to be on our sunday menus, which is a

prefix style. and it's been on a couple different menus, and it was just kind of something where we're using good ingredients and just being approachable and fun. >> so good. >> what is it? >> what does it take to make a restaurant approachable? that's a great distinction, and it's obviously something you have to set out to accomplish. what are the decisions you have to make to give it that sort of comfortable feel? um >> you know, i mean, we offer various menus, which i think is kind of a winner. we have an a la carte menu. we have, um, the menu deluxe, which is kind of like our tasting menu. um, and also during the pandemic, we installed a takeout window. so we have very casual takeout options that you can get, um, to go enjoy those outside or take them home. so kind of a little something for everybody. um, was our goal. and nathan kind of creates his menu around all of that. yeah >> good variety. >> this is so good. but tell us about your both your new year's eve sunday menu and your normal sunday suppers. >> um, so our new year's eve menu this year we decided to go

with a theme that's, um, kind of 80s retro. so the menu was very much built around that kind of, um, plays on classics. um, definitely inspiration from the old school dishes there, which is kind of why i did the salmon rosette. you know, um, a rose of smoked salmon that is also, um, cured. and then, um, the, the sunday supper menus are meant to be very casual, relaxed. it's a prefix style. um, and just meant to have a relaxed sunday evening . >> so you don't it's not a stuffy restaurant. you don't have to feel ill at ease. it's designed to for families. do you have a lot of families come in? >> yeah, absolutely. you know, we have a lot of neighborhood regulars, which is of course, wonderful. that's what we love. and um, yeah, families, people of all ages, um, very mixed crowd, which is, which is great. yeah. >> so you don't have to be a lord or a lady to attend. >> no, i know what was the inspiration for the name originally. yeah

>> um, originally. well, my husband's father's name was stanley. um, and we lived in london for quite some time. there was a pub nearby called the lord stanley. we always kind of saw a lord as someone who was welcomed and inviting. so it's a little bit personal, a little bit, a little bit british sounding as, um, my husband's british and, uh, little family name as well. >> oh that's fantastic. well, congratulations to you both. really great stuff. well done. and thank you. the restaurant is lord stanley, open seven days a week after the new year. thank you both. all right, that's it for the for four.
