lots of rain. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. the final friday of 2023. certainly a soggy one in the bay area. whether you're in the north bay, south bay or in san francisco, you're getting a good soaking tonight. >> yeah, it's enough to trigger a flood advisory for a good portion of the region, and we're not quite done yet with the rain. >> no, it's been a busy night over in the weather department, for sure. let's check in with meteorologist sandhya patel. sandhya? >> yeah. and dan and anna, this has been the strongest storm of the season so far. and it has brought us a drenching. so let's take a look at live doppler

seven. right now, the heaviest and the steadiest of the rain is in the inland east bay, right across highway four. antioch, brentwood, discovery bay, byron area. you will notice street level radar where it is coming down in the south bay. we have steady rain from san jose to willow glen, eden vale, santa clara, the santa cruz mountains getting light to moderate rain right now. and as we widen the picture here, we do have an urban and small stream flood advisory that extends from the southern part of our viewing area, all the way down towards the big sur region, and that is because this level three storm is now a level two, but it is not completely done yet. so let me show you what is in effect, coastal flood warning until saturday at 2 p.m. that's because high tides are going to coincide with these building waves. a high surf warning also in effect until 2 p.m. tomorrow. point arena waves right now 18 footers, large breakers between 28 and 33ft with ice isolated 40 foot waves means dangerous swimming and surfing conditions. here's a live view from our

santa cruz camera, where the waves have just been pounding the coast. now, on our storm impact scale, this is a level two through tonight. some downpours, gusty winds, rough surf, thunder chance and we are looking at still some flooding along the coastline and on the roadways. i'll be back with a look at the timeline to show you how long you'll need to hang on to the umbrellas. ama. >> all right sandhya, thank you so much. and we start the night in the south bay, which saw plenty of rain tonight. santa cruz county is still cleaning up from yesterday's high surf. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez joins us live tonight from san jose with how things are looking. and it's looking like it's pouring. lauren yeah i'm you know we're seeing a consistent amount of rain down here downtown. >> fell a little deserted with the wet weather, but we still managed to find people who were out a stormy friday night didn't stop families from venturing out in downtown san jose. this is the final weekend to catch the

holiday displays at christmas in the park. roberta gardner from spokane, washington, was determined to see it. well last year we went on the second end and everything was torn down. >> so we wanted to see it live. >> some people were prepared for the wet weather, others were caught off guard before the rain hit santa clara valley water had their free filled sandbags outside available for residents who need any further south seaside communities like aptos are still cleaning up from thursday's storm. this is video taken from venus cocktails and kitchen beachside on their instagram. they said they had minor flooding and will reopen on saturday and sunday in capitola. community continued to clean up the seawater and debris. the owner of zelda's on the beach, joshua whitby, said his goal is

to reopen sunday for brunch. looking ahead to the new year, whitby said the storms just keep getting worse so he's preparing for the next one. >> we're installing storm hurricane doors across the back of the restaurant just in preparation for the next one, so i don't have to come down and build a wall in the middle of rain or waves coming crashing over us. >> despite the cleanup, business owners in the treasure beach town of capitola want to let people who are home for the holidays know they're still open in. earlier this evening, capitola police issued an evacuation warning for capitola village and venetian hotel that's located right on the ocean front that went into effect at ten tonight. live in san jose. lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> all right, lauren, thank you so much. and the storm arrived in the north bay bringing rain and strong winds. and a large tree took out the deck of this home in cloverdale firstrillioneported lenders are warning heavy winds could hit

holiday lights and decorations. one santa rosa resident says he'll take his chances. we're going to be laying low and uh- and not climbing any ladders to take down christmas lights. >> if we're smart over the next, next couple days, with street flooding likely, the santa rosa fire department is urging drivers to be super cautious down trees are reported in accidental and power outages are also likely and on the subject of the roads, the chp is investigating a wreck in pacheco tonight. >> it happened in heavy rain just before 8 p.m. traffic the driver witnesses say he hit several parked cars near bloom drive. the truck continued about 400 yards before striking a power pole. then, as you see, overturning fire crews worked to extract the driver, who suffered moderate injuries. no word on what led to the crash, but emergency responders say weather is likely to be a factor. and you definitely need an umbrella tonight if you are out and about. in san francisco, a steady rain fell throughout the evening, perhaps putting a

damper on some plans, but abc seven news reporter tara campbell talked with several people embracing the wet weather from sandbags to swelling waves. >> friday's storm dropping in on san francisco. we enjoy the rain and do some hike in this weather. >> we live up the road and so we were having a nice rain walk with my daughter and from the embarcadero to the edges of ocean beach, locals and tourists alike, soaking it in. >> well, i do love the rain, so i don't mind it so much. >> bianca smith is visiting from austin, texas. >> got so foggy very quickly so it limited my time. on seeing the golden gate bridge, but that's okay. >> it's her first time in the city and she's not letting the rain put a damper on it. >> it's very beautiful here. the ocean. you can see how wild it is and it's just very pretty to see. >> and while it may be beautiful, the san francisco fire department wants people to take precautions. >> we ask that if you don't have to be outdoors, you stay indoors. think about some good

responding to a burglary underway at a cannabis business at embarcadero and fifth, police say the suspects are still on the run. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn joins us live with more on what the community is saying about the officer and his death. suzanne. >> so, ama officer tuan lee had worked for the department for four years now, for the past two years, he was a community resource officer. so many people tell us lee was committed to keeping oakland safe and that losing him is heartbreaking. >> sadly, today, one of our officers paid the ultimate sacrifice. >> devastating news. the death of a colleague, a friend, a brother killed while doing his job on friday afternoon. the flag draped coffin carried out and a silent show of solidarity for a fallen officer, tuan lee, a four year veteran of oakland pd. >> hey, i got an officer down. >> according to the interim chief, police responded to a call about a burglary in the 400 block of embarcadero early friday morning when officers got there, they spotted several

people trying to get away. one of them fired a gun several times at officer lei lei, who was wearing plain clothes, was struck while he was driving in an unmarked vehicle. he died from the shooting. >> oakland will work tirelessly with all of our law enforcement partners to find those responsible for this assault on our city and the killing of our officer. >> friday night, the scene was still taped off as the rain came down hard on the investigators. officers tuan lei was the first officer killed on the job in oakland in 14 years. that's tough news for a lot of people to process. >> it's a tragedy for the officers who served with him to tragedy for our residents, and a tragedy for this city. >> yeah. it's pretty sad uh, so see, the people protecting us also getting hurt and getting killed. carl chan is with oakland chinatown chamber

of commerce. he was there for us, you know, when we needed needed him, especially, you know, remember during the, uh, the aapi hate era and he's also the cousin of one of our board members. >> he was a great gym for our neighborhood and our community. >> as a community resource officer, officer lei got to know keisha anderson and kept a close eye on her neighborhood, and i left my garage door open one day. >> um, and i didn't know i left it open. he came and knocked on my door and let me know, like i one of your garage. i knew that wasn't the normal for you. um i checked it and everything was fine. >> henderson says losing officer lei is losing a positive piece of her community. >> this is a tragic loss for the city of oakland and governor gavin newsom announced an honor for officer lei today. >> flags at the state capitol will be flown at half staff live in the newsroom. suzanne vaughn, abc seven news. all right, suzanne, thank you. >> and the last time oakland lost an officer in the line of duty was the department's deadliest day. on march 21st, 2009, for officers were shot. it

( ♪ ♪ ) it was actually sunny up in the sierra. a winter weather advisory did take effect for the mountains about an hour ago. there are new evacuation warnings in santa cruz county tonight as residents clean up from flooding. yesterday the santa cruz sheriff's office is telling residents in rio del mar and pajaro dunes to be prepared to leave quickly. it's due to forecast showing the potential for trouble overnight from the surf and the high tide. yesterday, massive waves hit capitola hard, forcing businesses to close their doors.

>> yesterday was a hard one. it really took a blow on a lot of the businesses. everybody had to close. we are open. we're here. we're going to be fully sit down full service. there's a lot of the businesses down here in capitola village that are going to be open today and could really use your patronage. >> tonight's evacuation warning started at 10 p.m. about an hour and 15 minutes ago. the santa cruz wharf is also closed due to unsafe conditions. >> a scary scene this afternoon in san francisco. a car got crushed under a fire truck near lyon and california streets. the fire department says three fire engines were on their way to calls at separate locations around 4:00, when two of them crashed into each other. they then slammed into three parked cars, three firefighters were hurt. they are expected to make a full recovery. no one else was injured. a father and son arrested and charged with starting a massive wildfire in the lake tahoe area in 2021, will not be going to trial. the caldor fire burned hundreds of buildings and all but wiped out grizzly flats, an el dorado

county judge ruled today. there wasn't enough evidence to go to trial. the two men, however, still face weapons charges. >> all right, new at 11. brace yourself. p-g-and-e's customers are getting ready to pay more for their electricity and gas. state regulators approved an increase of 12.8% last month that takes effect january 1st. we reported that at the time, but in a filing today with the california public utilities commission, pg and e bumped up that estimated increase by $2. it now projects residential customers will pay an average of about $34.50 more than originally. it was $32.62. the utility plans to use the money to bury power lines underground. federal prosecutors say a second trial against ftx founder sam bankman-fried is not necessary. officials say evidence would duplicate what was already shown to a jury. so they are dropping the campaign finance charges against him. they say a second trial would also cause a delay

in the victims restitution. bankman-fried is a bay area native and son of two stanford law professors. he was convicted last month for wire fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy and other conspiracy charges as well. we have an update on that. >> chinese surveillance balloon that was shot down by the u.s. military after it crossed the country early this year. u.s. intelligence agencies found the balloon used in american internet service provider to send short data transmissions back to china. an official says the network connection was not used to transmit intelligence. instead, the balloon stored the information, which was studied by us officials. china maintains the balloon was a civilian weather research craft that was blown off course today. >> officials attempted to clean up the aftermath after a massive wave flooded ventura county's coastline. look at this a beach closures are in effect through saturday as the area remains damaged and flooded. as you would expect, more high tides are expected through the new year's weekend and as a storm moves into the region, several streets, cars and homes along

the coast were flooded as waves as high as 20ft crashed into the ventura pier. >> all right. we've had a lot of incredible video with this weather that's going on. we sure have. >> this was a three on our impact scale, but really there was significant impact. it's time to check with meteorologist sandyha patel for more on what we can expect as we go forward. >> yes. so we'll still see parts of the bay area getting soaked like we are tonight, dan and anna. but it's going to become more showery in nature. let me show you live doppler seven. right now it is still steady rain across a good portion of the inland east bay and parts of the south bay. so let's get into street level radar from antioch to deer valley road, brentwood, vasco road. excuse me, byron highway. you can see knightsen area, some light to moderate rain right now. and there have been some heavy downpours in this area as well. about 6000/500 of an inch per hour. check out the south bay from campbell to san jose heading into edenvale. coyote you will

notice alum rock, santa clara, the peninsula getting hammered by some heavy rain around mountain view as well. so i would hang on to the umbrellas. it's light to moderate in the santa cruz mountains as we widen the picture here. look at what's happening. the front is pushing in with this level two system, and now we have this cold, unstable air back here that is going to swing through. and as it does, there's potential for thunder. so let's go and show you a loop of the last few hours as we were getting just soaked for several hours of this rain that has been coming through, and there have been some storm damage reports, 11 to be precise, a coastal flooding, nine of non thunderstorm wind damage. so definitely has been a storm that has produced some damage. excuse me. rainfall. all right so far in the last 24 hours picking up 2.78 in ben lomond 8400 san francisco oakland 9/10 of an inch. half an

inch. in san jose, you will notice over an inch in santa rosa. napa, kentfield close to 2/4500 in concord. 2000/200 of an inch in livermore. and we're still counting a couple of hundredths here and there. couple half tenths of an inch is going to be keep coming down, at least for parts of the bay area. so storm concerns tonight. standing water on the roadways. it's a high likelihood coastal flooding, high power outages. it's in that low category now sierra snow going into moderate category wave heights are coming up and they're going to continue to come up until tomorrow afternoon when they begin to recede. so that high surf warning going until 2 p.m. tomorrow, temperatures right now 40s and 50s. here's a live view from our exploratorium camera, where you can see the rain falling overnight tonight. showers a chance of thunder tomorrow. we're looking at the continuation of dangerous waves and coastal flooding. new year's eve cloudy with an isolated chance of a shower or two. so on our storm impact scale through tonight, it's a level two moderate storm impact scale

that... ...is your quest. you needed to write it, and you did, and it has been a bestseller. so, we're talking about bestselling books, then we're talking about movies, a musical on broadway... -right. ...and now a series on disney plus. rick: i think the first thing to know is that we went into this understanding that we did not know the business and we were not putting ourselves forward as experts at making a tv show. we had to lean on a lot of wonderful people, a great team that would teach us how this process works, because it is very different than writing a book. with--with a lot of good help, i think--i think we got there. [growls] -percy jackson... -[thunderclap] ...we've been expecting you. and you also have a lot of wonderful actors who are playing these roles. did you have a part in picking those folks? every step along the way. the only expectations was that they embody the character that they're playing.
