>> building a better bay area moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc seven news. >> sadness and outrage in response to the death of a police officer in oakland today. a tribute in his honor. hi there and thanks for joining us. i'm dion lim, more than 24 hours after officer tuan lee's death, the search continues for suspects today in his murder. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard says police are hoping tips from the public will help bring the killer to justice. >> there's a growing memorial inside the oakland police headquarters for officer tuan lay. flowers and cards honoring the 36 year old officer killed friday morning in the line of duty. sadly, today, one of our officers paid the ultimate sacrifice. police officials say. lay was a four year veteran of the force. lay was shot while he and other officers were responding to a burglary underway at a cannabis business at embarcadero and fifth. fellow officers paying tribute to lay friday afternoon. on saturday,

oakland naacp member. he says the tragic shooting comes just days after oakland mayor shang tao rejected a list of police chief candidates from the police commission. >> safety has to be priority. it has to be number one. we have to get on top of it. and i'm saying it's an urgency and it's an emergency. we need to do it now. >> oakland will work tirelessly with all of our law enforcement partners to find those responsible for this assault on our city and the killing of our officer. >> for now, a community mourning the passing of an officer who dedicated his life to keeping oakland safe. >> so this is a tragic loss for the city of oakland. >> in oakland. cornell, bernard. abc seven news. new details now on a crash involving a police cruiser in san francisco. >> police say the driver of the suv involved in the collision failed to stop for officers during a traffic stop. you can see that suv flipped on its side next to a mangled patrol car. that accident happened at about

1030 last night on third street and cesar chavez. four officers were injured and taken to the hospital. all will be okay. the driver of the suv was taken into custody. all right, moving on to the weather. now talk about a soaking start to the day for much of the bay area. this is a storm cell that hit san francisco at about 8:00 this morning to talk about how long this break in the rain will last. let's get to weather anchor spencer christian standing by with the answer. hi spencer. okay, dion. >> we're enjoying quite a break right now. this is the view at the golden gate. lots of blue sky showing up in that camera view. and as you look at live doppler seven, you can see very little happening right now in the way of shower activity. most of this green we're seeing in this central part of the bay area is just uh. it's not even hitting the ground. it's evaporating before raindrops hit the ground. however, some raindrops are hitting the ground down in the south bay near cupertino and saratoga. we had some light sprinkles on parts of the santa cruz mountains. we still have some areas of light sprinkles. that's just about it. now, some other good news here. what had been a high surf warning is now down down scale

to a to a high surf advisory is what i'm trying to say until 10:00 tonight. large breakers, 16 to 19ft. not quite the dangerous waves we had earlier. still, though dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and wave heights continue to come down. i'll have the accuweather seven day forecast a little bit later. dion. >> all right. spencer, thanks. pacifica police are warning of more high tides along the coastline today. those waves. the area has already been hit with dangerous waves and flooding. and despite evacuation warnings, police say the waves have attracted some people still to the beaches. one resident traveled from walnut creek to get a close look at the high tides. >> well, i've been watching it on channel seven and you know, and uh- kind of knew i was going to get what i was going to get when i got here, and it's not disappointing. i seen people get knocked over practically down

there, but they were on that side where they're not supposed to be. >> see this view was listening to you, spencer. the national weather service issued a high surf advisory for the san mateo county coast. the tides have caused flooding and road closures along beach boulevard and clarendon road as well. it's not just here in the bay area. massive waves are slamming. much of the california coast. the waves you see here are in manhattan beach near los angeles . abc news reporter will carr has a closer look. >> crews building massive sand berms along the coastline to protect homes and businesses after a terrifying rogue wave swept through ventura this past thursday. >> we're asking people to avoid the area. all of the beaches and harbors are closed within all the shorelines of ventura county . >> the wall of water sweeping people off their feet. this street turning into a river. >> it was like a tsunami. from what you've seen on the news, and just came suddenly, the people that were up on the second floor and the first room

sierra central sierra snow lab in soda springs said this morning that it received just two inches of snow over the last 24 hours. there are more storms in the forecast for the tahoe area next week. the snow lab says it hopes they will bring a bigger boost to those snow totals as and taking a look now at the road conditions in tahoe, this caltrans camera shows the i-80 at donner summit area, where you can see they're pretty smooth sailing dusting the trees. you can see that snow, but the roads are not snowy, just kind of soaked. there are currently no chain requirements on 8-80 or highway 50. can you remember last year? but it was like, oh my gosh, those roads are covered. >> you could not drive there. >> everything was shut. we had warnings and all kinds of coverage. >> this was a warm storm, obviously, which is why not much snow fell in the sierra. we need some colder storms over there to produce a higher snowpack. here's a look at what's happening right now dion on our live doppler seven image. you can see not much in the way of

rainfall right now. we have a few patchy light widely scattered showers. the wind is relatively calm a little bit breezy in some spots closer to the coast and the bay and on we go to the 24 hour temperature change. and from san francisco and oakland and concord northward and eastward, every location is a few degrees warmer than at this time yesterday, and other locations to the south and southeast are cooler than at this time yesterday. so here's the view. looking out over san francisco under partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies, 57 degrees here in the city right now. oakland 58. we've got 60 at hayward and upper 50s at san jose. san mateo and half moon bay and we've got mainly clear skies at the golden gate right now. things are really clearing out in the north bay. 60 right now in santa rosa and at napa, low 60s at fairfield and concord . and off we go to our forecast headlines now for this evening. the showers are winding down. that has begun already, but we still may see a few showers popping up as we go into the late night hours tomorrow, new year's eve. mostly cloudy, a slight chance of an isolated shower or two, but mainly a dry day tomorrow and certainly a dry

day on new year's day with a sunny start monday to 2024. here's our forecast animation going into the evening hours. notice just a few spotty showers pushing far out to the east. they're out towards the central valley, so we don't expect any significant precipitation tonight. clouds will linger, however, and we'll start to get some partial clearing late tomorrow evening. what have been a high surf warning earlier today is now a high surf advisory wave. heights are still elevated, but not quite so high as they were earlier today is still dangerous. swimming and surfing conditions, and a chance of some localized beach erosion. now overnight. look for mainly cloudy skies, low temperatures generally in the mid to upper 40s. highs tomorrow, mainly in the upper 50s to about 60 down in san jose, but most locations are pretty much on the cool side. tomorrow 56 to about 58 degrees for most of the bay area. and here is the accuweather seven day forecast. so christmas eve daytime, mostly cloudy, but we'll see partial clearing going into the nighttime hours tomorrow. then monday uh- did i say christmas eve? new year's eve? i i had it
