times square, in the thick of all the new year's eve excitement. >> abc seven news starts right now. >> building a better bay area moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc seven news. >> oh, check it out. crowds are gathering. police are preparing and businesses along san francisco's embarked are hopeful for good fortune this new year's eve. hi there, and thanks for joining us on this final day of the year, i'm dionne lim. out with the old. in with the new. there is growing anticipation tonight for a fresh start in 2024. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard is live for us at the bay area's unofficial all new year's eve headquarters that is san francisco's embarcadero. so he's got a look at different celebrations happening today. preparations for also the big one tonight. cornell happy new year. >> happy new year to you, dion 2024 of course just hours away. and you know we can already feel the buzz of excitement down here

on the embarcadero. lots of people making their way here. as you can probably see from pier nine here on the embarcadero. and a lot of fireworks at midnight. of course, police will be here to keep everybody safe. >> fireworks will light up the skies over san francisco's waterfront at midnight. >> spectacular, as always. you know, we do our best to amaze pyrotechnics expert pat diaz says his crew is busy loading mortar shells on this barge for the new year's eve fireworks show. >> they'll be launched about 1000ft from the ferry building. pat believes the weather will cooperate. >> it just seems like particularly you know, given the fact that we get fog from time to time, it seems like the people of san francisco really appreciate what we do more. more, especially when we have good weather and we have cloud cover, which is kind of nice because we get that that deep rumble that you feel in your chest. >> you get it twice, both from

the shell, but then when it reflects off the clouds, which is which is pretty cool. >> this week, abc seven news obtained a threat assessment from the fbi, flagging san francisco as an attractive target for would be attackers due to planned new year's eve celebrations. >> police officials say while there is no credible threat, the department is prepared, there will be additional officers out and around all of the planned venues. >> the fireworks show along the embarcadero. but we'll have additional officers all throughout the city. new year's eve celebration hosted by thrive city. >> for families who can't stay up until midnight. and i wish you guys a happy new year to this ancient bell was chiming inside the asian art museum, a new year's eve tradition for 38 years. the public was invited to ring the bell. according to buddhist teachings, the bell is rung more than 100 times before midnight to purge vices and bad luck. >> so on the new year's eve, we ring the bell for 108 times as a

where you can see cars beginning to gather. anchor spencer christian joining us now with a look at the weather. and if we can see those fireworks. >> good question dion. we're hoping we can. it's been cloudy all day all across the bay area. and as cornell pointed out, it's pretty chilly out there right now. it's only going to get chillier. here's a look at live doppler seven. now under those clouds in those clouds we have lots of moisture. there's almost nothing hitting the ground in the bay area right now. but as i pull back and animate the maps, you can see there's a surge of moisture and more clouds coming up from our south that may actually produce some scattered or isolated showers later in the evening. however forecast animation between now and 9 p.m. shows we expect whatever showers may fall to be clearing out of here and then partial clearing about 11 p.m. just before the fireworks begin. so that's encouraging. i'll have the full forecast a little bit later. dion. >> we like encouraging. all right spencer, thanks several public transit agencies are offering free rides this new year's eve. free muni service runs from eight tonight to 5 a.m. on new year's day. now keep

in mind you don't need to tag your clipper card or muni mobile ticket during those hours, or you will get charged. also, offering free service, ac transit, vta, samtrans and caltrain all starting at 8 p.m. the end of free service that varies. now. bart will run trains until 1 a.m, but it is not offering any free rides. the last east bay bound train running through downtown san francisco stations will be at about 1:30 a.m, while the last southbound train toward millbrae will run through downtown san francisco stations. at about 2:10 a.m, it will not stop at sfo, and you can ring the new year in right here on abc seven, starting at seven tonight. robin roberts has the year 2023 countdown to 2024 for dick clark's new year's rockin eve with ryan seacrest follows. abc seven news is on at 10 p.m, so we can take you back to ryan seacrest at 1030 for the countdown to midnight. police departments across the bay area

will have extra patrols out this new year's eve. oakland police say they're holding dui checkpoints throughout the city. people will also see increased police patrols throughout the city, focusing on key areas and new year's eve events. memorials have been set up to honor a fallen oakland police officer who was killed in the line of duty. friday morning, candles and flowers now mark the location where officers tunnel was mortally wounded on the embarcadero near eighth avenue. the 36 year old officer was shot while investigating a burglary at a business involved with the marijuana industry. a memorial has also been set up inside oakland police headquarters. police have not announced any arrests in the killing. memorial services for the four year veteran officer are being arranged. five people were injured when officers say they tried to break up a sideshow in antioch and a driver sped away. that car crashed into a concrete wall under highway four in pittsburg. officers say other people, who were likely taking

part in that sideshow showed up at the crash scene. >> apparently, it was an additional sideshow. vehicles in the area responded to this area. uh- as well, and verbally, verbally yelling at our officers and an unknown objects were being thrown at our officers here on scene. um, and uh. it became a little bit more hostile at that point. >> the chp called for backup, and officers from other agencies helped gain control of the scene . in an alert for parents with little ones. a brand of infant formula is under recall due to a rare but deadly bacteria. we'll have all the specifics on the product and a little later in sports, the 40 niners as they clinch the number one seed and will play at home throughout the playoffs. alvarez joins us with details later

products could be potentially contaminated with bacteria. the voluntary recall affects more than 675,000 cans of the product . fda officials say some samples have tested positive for a rare and potentially deadly bacteria. no illnesses, though, have been reported. well, we are just hours away from a host of new laws taking effect in california, and here are some of the ones impacting a lot of people. california's minimum wage is increasing to $16 an hour on january 1st. it's higher than that in many bay area counties. for fast food workers, it will be $20 an hour. another

benefit for workers all full and part time employees in the state are getting a minimum of five six days a year. workers will accrue sick hours once they have been employed for 200 days. employers are also now banned from discriminating against a worker who uses cannabis while not at work and away from their workplace. employers also won't be able to ask about a job applicant or ask about a job applicant if they have used cannabis in the past. and don't forget, you can find out what else is changing in the new year with this article about california's new laws. you can find it at our website. abc7 news .com. well, over in oakland today, a community oriented celebration of the sixth day of kwanzaa, neighbors, friends, family, and parishioners all gathered at saint patrick's parish for a gathering filled with food, scripture reading, and the lighting of candles. the week long kwanzaa celebration celebrates african culture with each day celebrating one of seven principles. today's event

bangkok goes big on new year's eve. we're getting our first look at how some other countries rang in the new year. thailand uses this impressive celebration to increase tourism and bring in people from around the world to celebrate. it now got to go down under now. fireworks lit up the sky over australia, sydney harbor, where it became am 2024 at 5 a.m. our time sydney is one of the first major cities to ring in the new year. it's reported that this display included about 13,000 aerial shells and more than 75,000 pyrotechnics. it's an odd the celebration in dubai is all about the burj khalifa, the tallest building in the world. it was lit up with fireworks led shows and waterworks. dubai's media office says it takes ten months of preparation to make it all happen. what a sight and we are also just hours away from the biggest new year's eve

the city so nice. they named it twice new york, new york, baby. i mean, it's the, i think, number one attraction in on the world. >> so you got to be here to see that big, shiny new year's eve ball drop. >> a timeless tradition to ring in a brand new year with big wishes, wealth and prosperity. it's a herculean task to manage an estimated 1 million people packing into the crossroads of the world in the big apple, the nypd, using a full arsenal of tools to keep people safe, including drone technology. this time, it's a bit more complicated because of the ongoing protests in new york city stemming from the israel-hamas conflict. but we can look for any type of anomalies in a crowd any suspicious people, any suspicious person. >> as you can see, it has infrared. it picks up infrared capabilities to celebrate new year's eve safely. >> here in new york city is the most important wish for some. we went to a lot of security to get to this point right here, so i feel really safe. >> everyone has been checked. that has came from this point

compared to new york. >> all is relative. yes. >> let's take a look at what's happening right here, right now on live doppler seven. we've got moisture in the atmosphere. as you can see indicated by the green spots. uh. most of that is not hitting the ground. however, there is moisture on the way that will likely hit the ground. uh- storm down to our south near la is kicking up some moisture that will probably produce some late evening showers here or maybe even early evening showers here, but they should be out of here by midnight and we might be able to actually see some fireworks. right now we've got cloudy skies, temperature readings in the mid 50s, the san francisco, oakland, san jose, san mateo and half moon bay. 59 at hayward. nice view at the golden gate where it's cloudy and light breeze blowing their temperature readings up in the north bay and over in the east right now. low to mid 50s at santa rosa, petaluma, napa, fairfield, concord and livermore . and let's take a look at oh wow, what a western sky. i wish i could show you that again. looking from emeryville towards the post-sunset sky, these are our headlines. uh- approaching midnight. we'll see partial clearing then for new year's day

tomorrow, a sunny start to 2024, and then the week ahead. it looks a bit wet and unsettled. we may see some sunshine here and there, but lots of clouds as well. here's our forecast animation for the evening hours starting at 6:00. we'll see a couple of areas of showers passing through, but by 9:00 we expect the showers to have ended , giving way to some partial clearing between 11 p.m. and midnight. so that's looking pretty good. it gets even clearer after that. we should hold the fireworks at 5 a.m. skies will be almost totally clear. overnight lows will be mainly in the mid to upper 40s. highs tomorrow right around 60 degrees for much of the bay area. so milder than today, but still seasonal. cool. and here's a look at the accuweather seven day forecast. so tomorrow we get off to a sunny start for 2024. showers will develop by midday on tuesday, giving way to even more rain on wednesday. so level one storms on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale thursday. sunshine returns, but then unsettled wet weather returns again on friday and saturday and finally next
