news. check it out. >> the crowds are gathering, police are preparing, and businesses along san francisco's embarcadero are hopeful for good fortune. this new year's eve. hi there, and thanks for joining us on this final day of the year, i'm dionne lim. out with the old. in with the new. there is growing anticipation tonight for a fresh start in 2024. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard is once again live for us at the bay area's unofficial new year's eve headquarters, san francisco's embarcadero. you've got a look at all the celebrations happening today and the preparations for the big one tonight. hi, cornell. >> hey, diane. yeah, 20, 24. just hours away. and i have to tell you, we can already feel buzz of excitement down here on the embarcadero as folks slowly make their way down here for fireworks at midnight to, of course, stake out a good place to watch them. extra police will also be here to keep everyone safe. fireworks will light up

the skies over san francisco's waterfront at midnight. >> spectacular as always. you know, we do our best to amaze pyrotechnic expert pat diaz says his crew is busy loading mortar shells on this barge for the new year's eve fireworks show. >> they'll be launched about 1000ft from the ferry building. pat believes the weather will cooperate. >> it just seems like particularly, you know, given the fact that we get fog from time to time, it seems like the people of san francisco really appreciate what we do more, more, especially when we have good weather. >> we have cloud cover, which is kind of nice because we get that that deep rumble, that you feel in your chest. you get it twice, both from the shell, but then when it reflects off the clouds, which is which is pretty cool. >> this week, abc seven news obtained a threat assessment from the fbi, flagging san francisco as an attractive target for would be attackers due to planned new year's eve celebrations. police officials say while there is no credible threat, the department is prepared, there will be additional officers out and around all of the planned venues

. >> the fireworks show along the embarcadero, but we'll have additional officers all throughout the city. to an new year's eve celebration hosted by thrive city for families who can't stay up until midnight. >> and i wish you guys a happy new year to this ancient bell was chiming inside the asian art museum, a new year's eve tradition. for 38 years, the public was invited to ring the bell. according to buddha's teachings, the bell is rung more than 100 times before midnight to purge vices and bad luck. >> so on the new year's eve, we ring the bell for 108 times as a time of reflection, to let all go. many are hoping that 2024 brings good things. >> i hope we are going to be healthy and then a wonderful new year just to remain healthy and happy. >> yes, that's about it. yeah, happy new year, happy new year.

call you conrad glass is like cornell's. you can see clearer skies. here's a look at live doppler seven. right now we're seeing some moisture passing over the bay area, as evidenced by the green on the screen there, but it's not hitting the ground. so we don't have rain happening right now. but there will be more clouds and masses of moisture surging our way from our south later this evening, mainly between six and about 9:00. so here's our forecast animation notice after about 9:00, skies begin to get partially clear, giving us hope for a good view of the fireworks . later tonight, i'll have the accuweather forecast in just a moment dion. >> all right we like that. hope spencer. thank you. several public transit agencies are offering free rides this new year's eve. free muni service runs from eight tonight to 5 a.m. on new year's day. you don't need to tap your clipper card either. or your muni mobile ticket during the hours, or you will get charged. also, offering free service, ac transit, vta, samtrans and caltrain all starting at 8 p.m. the end of

free service that will vary. bart will run trains until 1 a.m. keep in mind, though, it is not offering any free rides. the last east bay bound train running through downtown san francisco stations will be at about 130, while the last southbound train toward millbrae will run through downtown san francisco stations at about 210. it will not stop at sfo, and you can ring in the new year right here on abc seven, starting at 7 p.m. tonight. robin roberts has the year 2023 countdown to 2024. dick clark's new year's rockin eve with ryan seacrest follows. abc seven news is on at 10 p.m. tonight. so we can take you back to ryan seacrest at 1030 for that countdown to midnight. now, police departments across the bay area will have extra patrols out this new year's eve. oakland police say they're holding dui checkpoints throughout the city. peel people will also see increased police patrols throughout the city, focusing on key areas and new year's eve events. moving on. memorials

have been set up to honor a fallen oakland police officer who was killed in the line of duty friday morning. candles and flowers now mark the location where officer tuan lay was mortally wounded on the embarcadero near eighth avenue. the 36 year old officer was shot while investigating a burglary at a business involving the marijuana industry. a memorial has also been set up inside oakland police headquarters. police haven't announced any arrests in that killing, though. memorial services for the four year veteran officer are being arranged. a car rally was held on the streets of fremont today, calling attention to the situation in the middle east. organizers today rallied on behalf of the palestinian people, and you can see the event drew a large turnout. participate chants demanded an end to the israel military operating in gaza. they also drew attention to the humanity crisis there. the event was

peaceful and lasted about two hours through fremont. just ahead, an alert for parents with little ones. a brand of infant formula is under recall due to a rare but deadly bacteria. we'll have specifics about the product , right? and then in sports, the 40 niners as they clinch the number one seed and will play at home throughout the playoffs. chris alvarez gives us the details a little late

first look at how some other countries rang in the new year. thailand uses this impressive celebration to increase tourism and bring in people from around the world to celebrate it, and fireworks lit up the sky over australia's sydney harbor, where it became 2024 at 5 a.m. our time sydney is one of the first major cities to ring in the new year. it's reported that this display included about 13,000 aerial shells and more than 75,000 pyrotechnics. this practically looks like daytime. it's so bright and the celebration in dubai is all about the burj khalifa. it's the tallest building in the world. it was lit up with fireworks, led shows, even water works. dubai's media office says it takes a whopping ten months of preparation to make it all happen. now closer to home, we are just hours away from the biggest new year's eve celebration in america. you'll watch it right here on abc seven when we bring you dick clark's new year's rockin eve with ryan seacrest live from new york city . for a preview of all the

action, let's go live to anthony carlo once again from our sister station wabc, live in times square, who you really hear the party behind you. >> oh, the party is rocking, dion. let me tell you. flow rida just took the stage here. the man had some great hits and the crowd here is certainly enjoying it. you know, we've got a million people packing in here to the crossroads of the world they call times square. that for a reason. and even with some new security concerns this year, people are here and hopeful that they're going to have a great time. the excitement is rising in anticipation of the famous new year's eve ball falling in times square. i mean, it's the, i think, number one attraction in the world. >> so you got to be here like frank sinatra said, it's the city so nice. >> they named it twice. new york, new york, baby. >> it's a surreal feeling. it's really hard to describe. it's special. >> a week of festivities leading up to the big event, ensuring all will go smoothly for the

crystal clad ball, the dazzling performers and the tons of confetti. there's a small margin for error on such a big stage. a massive audience counting on it all to go right. we're going to have a lot of people here. >> time square is going to be filled, our office buildings, our hotels, restaurants are going to be filled with people. we're looking forward to a safe, enjoyable new year's in times square, a herculean task for the nypd using every tool in the toolkit, including thousands of uniformed cops and drone technology. safety is always a priority. we work hand in glove with the new york city police department. they are the best in the business at both events and then also managing protests. so we've we've been in discussions. they're planned. they they have a plan for tonight and i'm sure it's going to be executed flawlessly. >> police will be leaning on their drones as they manage ongoing protests stemming from the israel-hamas conflict. demonstrators organizing a shut it down for palestine rally near

times square. this is a game changer for us when it comes to protests, because a lot of times we don't know which way they're heading, so this allows us to get a bird's eye view of exactly which way they're heading. also, that the estimated 1 million people who packed times square for the magic of ringing in the new year can do so without a worry. we went to a lot of security to get to this point right here, so i feel really safe. >> everyone has been checked. >> that has came from this point forward. and new york city police are happy to report that it has been relatively quiet. >> we talked about those protests there that were planned again, very loud here in times square, where all the entertainment is going on. we wore our very best tonight, of course, as we await 2024 live in times square, anthony carlo dion, i'll send it back to you. that sounds good. >> we like the loud portion to be in conjunction with the celebration. all right anthony, thank you. all right. here at home, things definitely not as cold as new york, nor is loud.

>> or at least not yet. >> yeah, we've got time, but we've got some clouds hanging around. >> as you know, dion. and we're hoping for some clearing by midnight. now here's a look at live doppler seven. lots of green showing up there. basically moisture in the atmosphere that is not hitting the ground. we don't have rainfall at the moment, but as you look at the satellite radar animation, you can see a little disturbance moving up from our south that could produce a shower or two in the bay area between now and about 9 p.m, but after that, we expect at least partial clearing. this is a view from sutro tower looking out over san francisco, where it's 55 degrees right now. in fact, we have mid 50s also at oakland, hayward, san jose, and low 50s at san mateo and half moon bay. and looking across the calm embarcadero of the temperature readings right now, 50 at petaluma. pretty chilly there. low to mid 50s at santa rosa, livermore, napa, fairfield and concord. and these are our forecast headlines approaching midnight. we expect some partial clearing uh- you might get a decent view of the fireworks. new year's eve day tomorrow. sunny start to 2024. and for the week ahead, a wet, unsettled pattern is coming our way. so be

prepared for some rain this week, but not tomorrow. so from now until about 9 p.m, as i said, some showers may move through the bay area, but we expect dry conditions after that and partial clearing as we approach midnight and then even further clearing after midnight. but of course, fireworks will probably at least the legal ones be over by then. overnight lows will be mainly in the mid to upper 40s across the bay area, with a few lingering clouds. we'll start the day with bright sunshine tomorrow, which should last all day long, and highs will be right around 60 degrees. generally across the bay area, so a pretty mild new year's day. certainly milder than today was. and here's the accuweather 70 forecast. so sunny skies tomorrow. showers will develop by midday on tuesday on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale. this is a level one storm that will continue producing rain into wednesday. thursday. we expect sunshine to return, but not for long because late day showers will begin on friday , continuing into saturday, which will be yet another rainy day, and then mostly sunny skies again next sunday. >> now, abc seven sports with chris alvarez with the lions
