is always a chance we may spot some other fireworks being set off. taking a look. oh, none to be seen yet tonight, abc seven news reporter tara campbell is out on the embarcadero getting ready for the celebration. >> yeah, dion, we've been out here since late this afternoon. people are arriving early trying to get that premium parking vendors getting set up. and i can tell you as soon as it turned dark here, the energy turned electric from street vendors to selfies on new year's eve, celebrations are well underway in san francisco. >> we want to do something special for the holidays, and why not come back to our old hometown and enjoy the fireworks ? >> people streaming onto the embarcadero in anticipation of the night's fireworks? just be early there so that you know you get the best spot to see the fireworks and this crowd is happy to put the covid 19 pandemic behind them more or less celebrating. >> since it's been cooped up for a long time in the house. >> it's always been tradition

for me coming here to the ferry building for new year's on that ever since right before covid started. >> so this is the first time back, and it's really exciting. >> and from san francisco to the south of spain, locals and tourists alike ready to ring in the new year. >> it's very cool and it's very different from spain. it's really a very, um, cosmo politan city. it's beautiful and i think it's really i like it. yeah. >> and on this new year's eve, san francisco police is upping its presence. this past week, abc seven news obtained a threat assessment from the fbi, flagging the city as an attractive target for potential attackers. police say while there is no credible threat, they are prepared. >> i think safety always number one, right? and uh, but also that you got to be having apply some common sense. >> it's good to be cautious, but also it shouldn't stop you from having fun and enjoying your city. now as you just heard there, people certainly are taking safety precautions and being aware of their surroundings, but nothing seems to be holding these crowds back.

>> people are excited to celebrate this new year's eve in san francisco. tara campbell, abc seven news and we love to see it. >> well, wherever you might be celebrating tonight, make sure you and your loved ones all have a safe ride home. muni service is free. it runs until 5 a.m. and you don't need to tap your clipper card or muni mobile ticket during these hours, or you will get charged. also offering free service, ac transit, vta, samtrans and caltrain keep in mind, bart will run trains until 1 a.m, but those rides are not free. the last east bay bound train running through downtown san francisco stations will be at about 130. the last southbound train toward millbrae will run through downtown san francisco at around 2:10 a.m. all right, let's get a check now, with spencer keeping an eye on that forecast for the fire works. let's hope we can see them. well chances are improving. >> let's take a look at live doppler seven. you can see we have clouds, high clouds moving over lots of moisture. they're

showing up on the radar, but no rain is hitting the ground right now. however looking at our looping radar, you can see that we've had little impulses moving up from our south and weakening as they approach the bay area. so here's the forecast animation starting at 11:00, at which point we expect some light showers to be moving over the golden gate, san francisco, perhaps oakland as well, but they should be out of here by 1130. and then there's going to be some partial clearing leading up to midnight, which is about the time we hope to see the fireworks. so chances of seeing them are improving. i'll have the full forecast a little bit later. dion >> all right. improving is good spencer. thanks the happening now let's go out live to times square where you can see new york city is kicking off the new year and quickly cleaning up after that ball drop. reporter anthony carlo from our sister station w abc, is showing us how the big apple is the epicenter of celebration. ian. oh my hope they travel here from all around the globe. >> i come from chile, pouring into the crossroads of the world for a tradition. >> some have waited their whole

candles and flowers now mark the location where officer tunnel was killed on the embarcadero near eighth avenue. the 36 year-old officer was shot while investigating a burglary at a business involved with the marijuana industry. a memorial has also been set up inside oakland police headquarters. police have not announced any arrests in the killing. memorial services for the four year veteran officer are being arranged, and oakland's chinatown chamber foundation has set up a gofundme for officer lee's family. riders on bart will be paying more for trips in 2024. fares are jumping 5.5, or about $0.23 per ride. this is a scheduled bi annual increase that was approved by bart's board of directors back in june. meanwhile, a low income fare discount will increase from 20 to 50% through the clipper start program. bart has tied fare increases to the rate of inflation. happening tomorrow, dozens of brave ice skaters will

what an awesome sight. bangkok goes big on new year's eve. this was the show in thailand, one of the first places to enter 2024. thailand uses the impressive celebration to increase tourism and bring in people from around the world to celebrate. wouldn't that be nice? wow. yeah and to celebrate the new year this ancient bell was chiming inside the asian art museum in san francisco. this is a new year's eve tradition and it has been for 38 years where the public is also invited to ring the bell. now according to buddhist teachings, the bell is rung more

than 100 times before midnight to purge vices and bad luck. >> so on the new year's eve, we ring the bell for 108 times as a time of reflection, to let it all go. plenty of people turned out for the ceremony as you can see, all hoping for that good luck in the coming year. >> well, a 16 year old tampa, florida teen flying alone boarded the wrong frontier airlines flight from the correct airport gate. the teen was supposed to fly to cleveland. but listen to this. ended up in san juan, puerto rico. his family says the teen showed up at the gate ahead of time on december 22nd, but he was so early that he actually boarded the flight that left before the cleveland departure. frontier says the boy was flown right back to tampa on the same plane and put on the correct flight to ohio, where his mother was waiting for him for christmas. the mix up is under investigation, and the boy's father says airline staff did not scan his boarding pass as

>> so you have. you were full of surprises, my friend. >> don't know where that came from. let's talk about the weather, shall we? >> we know where that came from. >> hoping for clear skies here in san francisco so we can see the fireworks, which will be happening very shortly on live doppler seven, you can see some green there that is moisture in the air. that's not hitting the ground on our looping image, you can see some moisture moving in our direction and we might have a shower or two before the fireworks begin, but we're expecting partial clearing at least right now. we have temperatures in the low to mid 50s at san francisco, oakland, hayward, san mateo, san jose, and half moon bay. and as you see this clear view over uh- emeryville, upper 40s, right now, santa rosa and petaluma and livermore where it's pretty chilly, low 50s at napa, fairfield and concord. these are the forecast headlines approaching midnight as we are now, we expect partial clearing, so we might get to see those fireworks tomorrow. new year's day a sunny starts at 2024, but the week ahead will bring wet, unsettled weather, especially by midweek. but for tonight, by 11:00, a little bit of a shower
