opera house. paris fireworks seen lighting up in fronts of the eiffel tower. back here in new york the giant crystal ball dropping at midnight. san francisco, london, paris and hong kong. amid rising global tensions, security forces working around the clock. in new zealand, demonstrators chanting cease fire now as fireworks lit up the sky for celebrations. in europe, 90,000 officers were deployed across france and germany, detaining three people on new year's eve after thwarting a holiday threat to a famous cathedral. and why nypd started early in the week as over 1 million people flocked to see the ball drop. >> 300 police officers are

reassigned inside subway stations, centered around times square. this is all about public safety. >> reporter: abc's alex preshe on the ground in times square. >> coming into tonight's celebration there were concerns about security. this whole area a frozen zone. no vehicles going in or out. it makes it harder to navigate. police are also hopeful that it will make it safer. >> reporter: police seen bracing the new england cold monitoring celebrations in boston commons. but increased police presence not deterring party goer, still ringing in 2024 with joy and celebration. the ball just dropped here in times square. take a look at this ■crowd behid me. they are having a blast. just an absolute blast. >> now to the middle east. israel announcing they're preparing for the war in gaza to last for the rest of this entire year. abc's rhiannon ally has the latest.

overnight the new year bringing increasing fears that israel's war with hamas could escalate into a wider conflict. the u.s. military saying for the first time, it killed iran backed houthi rebels after navy helicopters came under fire in the red sea, where houthi fighters have attacked commercial ships from yemen. u.s. central command saying the helicopters, acting in self-defense after being fired upon, responded by sinking three small houthi boats that were trying to attack a container ship. a fourth boat fled. it comes as israeli forces released video of heavy fighting in gaza. the idf saying it expects the war with hamas to likely last throughout the entirety of 2024. adding some reservists are returning home this week taking a brief break to give them the needed strength for a prolonged fight. over the weekend, prime minister benjamin netanyahu said israel's

war with hamas will last many more months. netanyahu also vowing to take back control of gaza's border with egypt, saying any other arrangement would not ensure the demill tarization that israel is after. a policy the biden administration rejected in an interview with whit johnson. >> we don't support any reoccupation of gaza. what we do support is some post conflict governance in gaza that meets the aspirations of the palestinian people. >> reporter: the fierce fighting in gaza remains unrelenting this morning as the israeli military expands its operations farther south. the death toll in gaza 21,800 according to the hamas run health ministry. as aid trucks move in, with thousands lining up for food. now here's a look at the weather. ♪ early in the morning start of a new day new hopes new dreams new ways ♪

great job. >> bravo. we're counting down to the college football action this afternoon. fans will be on the edge of their seats as the top teams battle it out in bowl games in a matchup for the national championship on the line. will reeve has the lowdown on what to watch. >> reporter: this morning as the calendar flips to 2024 it is a jam packed day of college football. five bowl games today all on the abc/espn family of networks. the two with the most at stake, the college football playoff semifinals. first up at 5 p.m. eastern it's the bluest of the blue chips at the most iconic of venues. michigan and alabama in the rose bowl, with a spot in the national championship on the line. number one michigan is undefeated despite head coach jim harbaugh being suspended six of the team's 13 games for various infractions and scandals, including allegations of sign stealing. blake quorum led all running

backs with 24 touchdowns this season. the number 4 crimson tide, led by the quarterback who's an unstoppable force. they got here by beating two time defending national champions georgia. >> it goes down to the wire. >> reporter: bama's win kept undefeated florida state out, the first time an unbeaten team from a power five conference missed the playoffs. alabama keen to prove they belong. >> it's unfortunate that some good team had to get left out, but i really think that our team earned the right to be here. >> reporter: in the night cap, number two washington against number three texas in the sugar bowl. . >> touchdown, texas. >> reporter: the first ever pac12 champs before the conference was banned led by michael pennex junior. the longhorns haven't played for a national title since 2009. >> what a response by texas.

>> we are back now with one of the events that shaped 2023. the maui wild fires. amid the devastation, we learned so much about the resilience of the people there. we met a man who nearly lost everything, but found he had much more to give. for surf instructor bull, sharing his love for the ocean with maui's youth is his happy place. once catering to tourists, when covid hit and clients dropped,

the man called bully began offering surf lessons to kids. >> i started reaching out to this need. >> his story the center piece of the short film uncle bully's surf school. >> homelessness is rampant in our area. i saw there was an opportunity to build something, community strong. do you see where the ocean meets the sky? >> yeah. >> that is the horizon. >> but in the wake of the fire, he became homeless himself, with his wife ashley losing the home they closed on just a week before. they're now in temporary housing. >> when we opened the door, the embetter, the coal, the fire, the heat, we knew we had to just get out of there. it looked like somebody dropped a bomb on us. there was nothing left. >> still, he says, he has what matters most. life is the most precious gift
