the morning headlines with morgan norwood. good morning to you. >> morgan: high matt, spectacular new year celebration around the world. but we begin with breaking news out of japan. a major tsunami warning issued after a series of earthquakes. take a look at this, new images showing the destruction to buildings and roads. the security camera footage shows when the earthquake struck. >> this morning a 7.5 magnitude earthquake tracking japan after ringing in the new year. the earthquakes centering in the prefecture sending shock waves through the surrounding bodies of water. officials now issuing tsunami and evacuation warnings to the peninsula that japan meteorology agency predicting waves could reach deadly heights of 60 feet. according to the power company, more than 32,000 homes are still without power. fire is like the one seen here breaking out across the region. the tremors of the quite visible

people can stand up to 33 feet tall. they are nearly 1,000 statues on this island of just 63 square miles. >> pretty much everything, heritage but also economic system. >> it is they were economy. you know what, for the human race that is available. it says something about all of us in your menu ingenuity. >> and archaeologist had been studding them for over 20 years. it is estimated roughly 100,000 people travel to this island every year to take in the wonder of the statues. >> the average weight of these is about 40 tons. >> they were made at this magnificent sight, the quarry where you can see statutes in various stages of production. some carvings embedded in volcanic ash. >> that is a big one. his name -- he is 63 feet tall. we estimate that his weight would have been around 90 90-100 tons. >> the otherworldly slope with a

>> we are back now with one of the events that shaped 2023. the maui wildfires. amidst the devastation, we learned so much about the resilience of the people there. we met a man who nearly lost everything but found he much more to give. >> for surf instructor sharing his love for the ocean with maui youth is his happy place. once catering to tourist when covid hit and clans dropped, the man affectionately called and offered free surf lessons to kids. >> i started reaching out to this need.

>> his story the centerpiece of a short film "uncle bullies surf story." i saw this as an opportunity to build something of community strong. do you see where the ocean meets the sky? >> yeah. >> that is the horizon. >> but in the wake of the fire is, he became homeless himself with his wife, ashley, losing the home they closed on just a week before. they are now in temporary housing. >> when we open the door, the embers, the coal, the fire, the heat, we knew we had to get out of there. it looked like somebody dropped a bomb on us. there was nothing left. >> still, he says, he has what matters most. >> life is the most precious gift we have. we lost everything, but all of that can be replaced. >> days after the tragedy, gathering with other residents who have also lost so much at a community surf event, but then

the ocean is therapy. >> being in the water with the kids as my happy place. it is about giving into the sense of love and acceptance and using the ocean as a way of just venting and finding joy at the end. >> i'm happy to see him be happy. >> i don't feel homeless. they have the ocean that takes care of me pure the ocean is my home, she has my mother. as long as i have this, i'm feeling like a king. oh come i let that guy. >> the resilience of that community so truly inspiring. it is great to talk to him and see all the great work he is doing. uncle bullies surf camp in a documentary about him, uncle bullies surf school hawaii international film festival in october and the coveted audience choice award for documentary. so keep an eye out for it when it plays around the country. it is really, really want to watch.
