pattern that starts later today. >> good morning. welcome to tuesday, january 2nd. best way to start the check of our forecast with drew. >> yeah. so it is a quiet start out there. we have clouds upstairs. it's a dry morning leading to a wet evening. here's visibility right now around fairfield. we have some thick fog a quarter of a mile. there elsewhere we're not doing too bad. visibility not a huge issue this morning. the bigger picture live doppler seven along with satellite. our next cold front on approach. here's that low pressure spinning. it's going to push that front through here mainly in the evening. later on today it's a level one on the abc seven storm impact scale. showers and downpours. breezy at times. your biggest impact is going to be slower and slick. travel especially for the evening commute later on. so look at the day planner today. it's mostly cloudy. we're dry this morning. showers first in the north bay around lunchtime. pretty light in nature, but they do pick up in intensity and coverage later on. this afternoon. this evening by four 5:06 p.m. we'll have that wet weather moving through in those temperatures in the upper 50s to the lower 60s. good morning

gloria. >> all right. good morning drew. so we've been talking about how light traffic is out there this morning. and that is still the case right now. here's a toll plaza metering lights. did flip on at 545. this morning, but it almost doesn't even look like it because traffic is flowing pretty smoothly here this morning. and then one of our busier spots this morning is the san mateo-hayward bridge. and it is busier as those folks are heading westbound to the peninsula, but again, not as heavy as it normally is. guys >> thank you gloria. good news. this morning. if your commute involves bart, trains are rolling again in the east bay after a train derailed, caught fire, and then sent nine people to the hospital. all of this happened yesterday near the orinda station, impacting service between the rock ridge and walnut creek stations. abc seven news reporter lena howland in orinda, with reaction from riders and what bart says happened before that incident. lena carmen. >> bart. trains have been coming and going from this station here in orinda all morning long,

which is a good thing. as bart officials confirm, right around 430 this morning, that service would be back to normal between rock ridge and walnut creek. now, this comes after crews worked well into the night to make repairs and do inspections. a giant crane was even brought in last night to lift the derailed bart car back onto the tracks, which took hours to pull off. bart says damage to the track is not extensive, but this is something that cut off all train service between rock ridge and walnut creek, forcing passengers to use a bus bridge. passengers say the train stopped twice and then moved backwards as it derailed, then in a mad dash to evacuate as the car filled with smoke. >> somebody behind us was like, just jump. just jump. so we just jumped in this outside like like mission impossible almost. but like, not in a cool way. like in a very bad way. like scary. we all kind of had to jump off a good distance from the train onto the tracks, bart says just before the derailed, the train

operator was asked to manually switch the track because the signaling issue prevented the computer from doing it. >> they say the procedure is not uncommon, and operators are trained to do it. the operator switched the track and was then manually controlling the train when it derailed the details into what happened are still under investigation, and we've also learned that the public utilities commission of california has also launched an investigation as well. live in orinda, lena howland, abc seven news. >> lena, thank you. this is the fourth bart derailment in the last 15 years. all of them have happened in the east bay. the most recent was in june of 2022. excessive heat on the tracks caused a train to derail between the concord and pleasant hill stations. in february of 2014 and march of 2011. an uneven track wear caused derailments near the concord station and in december of 2009, a train derailed between the lake merritt and 12th street stations in oakland. make sure to download the abc seven news bay

ordered to euthanize more than 91,000 birds. more than a million birds have been euthanized already on nine farms in sonoma county since thanksgiving. marin county also recorded its first outbreak last week. >> a deadly crash outside of a concert venue in rochester, new york, is now being investigated as possible terrorism. gloria. the crash happened as thousands of people were leaving a new year's eve celebration. >> that's right. kumasi the crash happened in the first hour of 2024, just as a new year's eve concert at rochester's kodak center was wrapping up. dash cam video shows the fire, and this was moments after a ford expedition slammed into another suv outside the theater. the crash sent both vehicles into a crowd of people in a crosswalk. several people in the crosswalk were hurt. two people in one of the suvs were killed. >> when we did finally get outside and you saw the carnage of the cars and the one car

burnt up, the smell of gasoline was just so intense. i couldn't believe how strong it was. >> investigators say they found a dozen gas canisters in and around the ford expedition that had been rented at the syracuse airport, and that's why this has triggered a terrorism investigation. the driver reportedly drove his own car to the airport to rent the suv, and then drove more than an hour to rochester. he was taken to a local hospital with life threatening injuries. reggie >> gloria. thank you. california is conducting its first snow survey of the season today. state water experts are expecting the results would be well below normal for this time of year. last week, the uc berkeley central sierra snow lab reported snow levels were around 33% of normal. that was before a storm system arrived over the holiday weekend. the official measurement is going to happen this afternoon at phillips station in the sierra and southern california. >> giant sinkhole swallowing up part of a parking lot in orange

some light showers begin to arrive around lunchtime, and then as we head into the evening. this is 530 today. that's when the heaviest of the rain is moving through. we'll have some pockets of downpours lowering that visibility will have slower commute times this evening, as we have some standing water on our roadways. as that front crosses through here, it will kick up our winds. future tracker winds showing you'll likely see gusts around 20 to 35mph throughout the afternoon and the evening. as we see thatrillionain heavy at times, we have a winter weather advisory starting at 10 p.m. today through early thursday. that snow level around 5000ft. so this is a colder storm. could pick up 6 to 12in of snow. our highest peaks, probably a foot

was preparing to head to japan's west coast to help with the earthquake relief efforts. >> the death toll from the 7.5 magnitude earthquake has risen to at least 48. inspection of the area by helicopter has revealed widespread damage, including roads cut off, landslides and fires. at least 40,000 power lines were knocked down. there are now more than 2000 firefighters and 1000 other first responders helping with those rescue efforts. this earthquake happened in western japan. that's an area that isn't accustomed to earthquakes of this size. there have been at least 147 aftershocks with a magnitude of one or higher. seismologists say aftershocks could continue there for months. >> turning to a true honor of a lifetime for one san jose newborn. the first baby born in the bay area in 2024, baby albert is happy, healthy and now the owner of a rare life fact.

abc7 news anchor dion lim was able to catch up with the family to introduce us to baby albert and a story you'll see only on abc7 news. >> filipina paraglider will be the first one. yeah, the first one in the bay area. >> yeah, for parents cheng yang and yao ming wong, their second son, albert, was more than ready to burst into the new year when he was born at exactly 1205 on january 1st. >> she laid on the bed is already like, almost 11. i think it's already 11, and within the hour everything is done and it's like, really, really fast. we know that second one will be faster, but we didn't expect like this fast. >> baby albert, according to his nurses at good samaritan hospital in san jose, is wasting no time making his voice heard. >> he cries really loud. he made it clear that he wants something. >> while albert has no problem with volume forming words, makes it a little hard to do an interview. so we found another way to get a glimpse into his future. when a child is born with mercury retrograde in their birth chart, it makes them an

showers moving through today, but other areas, new york especially, totally quiet sunshine, mid 40s chicago, denver, atlanta looking great. l.a. is going to be dry. we'll have temperatures in the low 60s. but here locally we are tracking rain this evening. a level one on the abc seven storm impact scale. showers and downpours with a wind kicking up at times. slick travel the biggest impacts this morning. it's very quiet out there. it's mostly cloudy. we're dry into the afternoon. we start seeing those showers light in nature. first arriving in the north bay, then heading into the evening. here comes that front, bringing heavier showers. 5:06 p.m. likely we'll find the heaviest of the rain, but it's a quick moving front. we'll finish out the night with mostly cloudy skies and perhaps an isolated shower will linger into early wednesday morning. but the main event is this evening. rainfall totals coming in a 2:45 quarters of an inch of rain for most of us. however, we'll watch for those downpours do move through those areas could pick up close to an inch of rain later on tonight. snow is coming to the sierra. we'll have a winter weather advisory kicking in at 10 p.m. tonight. the heaviest snow falls early tomorrow

his jugular vein yesterday afternoon. lee was airlifted to the hospital, where he's undergoing emergency treatment there. officials say they have detained the attacker, who used a seven inch knife that he bought off the internet. news at six an investigation is underway after six more complaints about flaring in the east bay. this time it happened new year's eve at chevron's richmond refinery, chevron tells the chronicle. it was a result of a, quote, process upset these latest complaints come after a series of flaring incidents in richmond and martinez late last year, flaring in november resulted in four notices of violation one for chevron that flaring was blamed on a power outage. if you're going to the warriors game today, get to chase center early. if you want a free bobblehead. tonight's giveaway is an andrew wiggins jedi bobblehead. you can see it on

is live at the orinda station. lena, you just talked to bart officials. >> reggie. that's right. only moments ago, i just talked to a spokesperson for bart out here at the orinda station who says their crews were extremely busy working through the night to make repairs and also do some inspections on the track just to make sure that everything was safe and ready to run as normal today. now i do want to go to some video taking yesterday, capturing the scary moments when it all happened, when a bart train derailed and caught fire near the orinda station, passengers say the train stopped twice and then moved backwards as it derailed. then a mad dash to evacuate as the car filled with smoke. nine people had to be taken to the hospital, while a giant crane was brought in. last night to lift the derailed bart car back onto the tracks, which took hours to pull off. but bart says damage to the track is not extend live. i just talked to a spokesperson for bart and i asked him what reassurance he can offer

happening just hours after the u.s. military responded to a distress call from a shipping vessel being attacked by houthi rebels in the red sea. u.s. central command says that the houthis were trying to board the vessel when they fired at two u.s. navy helicopters. and i think we have the wrong video there. so let me see if i can get back to the other correct video here. all right. the helicopter returned fire, killing ten rebel fighters. a houthi spokesperson says that they were trying to prevent the ship from reaching israel. the internal national chamber of shipping says a 12% of global trade passes through the red sea , and maersk is one of the world's largest shipping companies. well, they now paused all ships from traveling through the area for at least 48 hours. reggie >> thanks, gloria. this morning we're hearing from demonstrators who showed up to congresswoman nancy pelosi's san francisco home to demand a cease fire in gaza. we first brought you that story yesterday, as it was starting on abc seven mornings.
