>> wow. >> it looks like a toy dog. >> he's looking at us, i can tell you that. >> pretty chill. >> that's coming up. also ahead, we are tracking the back to back cross country storm, as people get back to work this week. >> that's all coming up. we begin with two breaking headlines out of japan including the race to rescue survivors after a powerful earthquake on the coast. and there was a fiery plane collision in tokyo, 400 people on board. matt gutman is at the scene. >> reporter: a terrifying scene as japan airlines flight 516 came in for landing and crashed right into a japanese coast guard plane. japanese authorities say they're investigating the entire airport here. you can see the many hundreds of people waiting behind me. >> caller: an air bus collided with that japanese coast guard plane and burst into that fire

ball. then the a350 nose dived and skid on its belly for many hundreds of yards. fire engulfing its belly all arpb. 379 passengers on board and crew managing to escape. japanese authorities say all of them are alive and well. we understand five of the six crew members aboard that coast guard plane were killed. that plane was headed to western japan to deliver earthquake relief they're still trying to get aid to them. tens of thousands of people in addition to those cut off remain without electricity. this morning a desperate search for survivors after that deadly earthquake in japan.

that magnitude 7.6 quake flattening buildings, severing power lines and killing dozens. it forced tens of thousands in coastal areas to evacuate. this video capturing the chaos at this train station, the violent rattling lasting for seconds. hundreds of other passengers traveling on high speed bullet trains stranded for several hours. major road ways buckling, making them impassable. this video taken inside a convenience store showing items on shelves shaking violently. cell phone video taken from inside this store showing the panic and chaos as customers run for safety. powerful tremors rocking this home near the epi center. a baby crying out. and there have been dozens of after shocks in a country accustomed to seismic activity. >> japan has about three times as many earthquakes as california because it's sitting at a very complicated part of the puzzle.

>> reporter: now at first there was a major tsunami warning but that was downgraded. there was also major concern for japan's nuclear power plant. the government here saying all of its nuclear power plants are safe and under control. michael? >> that is some good news there, matt. thank you. the joint terrorism task force leading the investigation following a deadly car crash outside a new year's eve concert. aaron katersky is in rochester with the latest. good morning, aaron. >> reporter: michael good morning. this was the scene of a fiery crash. when firefighters put out the flames, they discovered something that made them question whether this was really just an accident. this morning the urgent investigation into whether a car crash outside a concert venue early new year's morning may have stopped a terror attack. just before 1 a.m. monday a large suv collided with an uber driver's smaller suv pulling out of a parking lot by kodak

center, as 1,000 people were leaving a concert. both vehicles plowed into pedestrians crashing the street. >> how many people are injured? >> we're trying to count. we got one, two, three that i can see on the ground. >> reporter: the large suv burst into flames. the fire took nearly an hour to put out. in and around the charred wreckage of the vehicle, firefighters found more than a dozen gas cans. >> saw the carnage of the cars and the one car burned up and car pieces everywhere. it was surreal to think, wow, this happened right here. >> reporter: also raising suspicion, the driver of the large suv. law enforcement sources told abc news he's from syracuse and had driven his own car to the syracuse airport where he rented the ford expedition. investigators are poring through the driver's electronic devices and social media accounts and talking to friends and relatives as they try to learn more. >> someone saw something, heard

something, knows something. no piece of information is too small. >> reporter: we've just learned the driver of the ford expedition died overnight of his injuries. police have been conducting searches as they work to determine more about him because the nagging question this morning, michael, why would someone rent a giant suv, fill it with gas cans and then drive it toward this crowded theater? michael? >> lot of questions to be answered there, aaron, thank you very much to that. george? >> michael, thanks. now the crisis at the border which has spread to cities across the country. some big city mayors say they're overwhelmed, under funded and want action. mola lenghi has the story. good morning, mola. >> reporter: good morning, george. as you can see here, dozens of migrants, many of them families now living in little tent city in downtown denver stretching a couple of blocks, so big the city plans to close this encampment as the weather is getting dangerously cold. this morning as the number of southern border crossings soar,

mayors across the country bracing for new waves of migrants. u.s. customs and border protection reporting more than 242,000 encounters at the border in november. texas governor abbott transporting migrants to democratic run city likes denver, chicago and new york. three mayors gathered virtually last week to sound the alarm. >> we at this point now have had more migrant arrivals than any city per capita. >> reporter: new york city mayor adams issuing an executive order requiring charter buses provide the city at least 32 hours notice prior to arrival, but buses skirting around that order over the holiday weekend. local officials saying an estimated ten buss from texas and one from louisiana dropped off about 400 migrants at new jersey transit stations where they continued into the city by train. after putting in place similar restrictions in chicago, mayor johnson sent a plane carrying 350 texas migrants arrived early sunday morning at the rockland airport and were bussed to surrounding suburbs.

left to find their way to the city. city of denver scrambling to find the migrants housing as they prepare to shut down the encampment. also offering them a bus ticket to another city if they choose, eva. >> thank you, mola. now the israel/hamas war and rising tensions in the red sea after a u.s. strike on iran based rebels that left several dead. iran is reportedly deploying a war ship to the region. marcus moore is in israel with the latest. good morning, marcus. >> reporter: eva, good morning. the international chamber of shipping says 12% of global trade passes through the red sea. it offers a shortcut past africa via the suez canal. mersk they have paused their operations because rebels have targeted yet another vessel. this morning with rising tensions in the middle east, iran putting on a show of force,

sending a war ship to the red sea, according to iranian state media reports. its foreign minister meeting with a senior houthi spokes person in tehran monday. this hours after u.s. forces responded to a distress call from a shipping vessel attacked by houthi rebels in the red sea. u.s. central command saying u.s. navy helicopters returned fire in self-defense, sinking three of the four small boats and killing the crews. the fourth boat fled the area. the spokes person for the iranian backed proxy saying that while, quote, the american enemy bears consequences of this crime and its repercussions, the rebels were trying to prevent the ship from reaching israel. the houthis have launched dozens of attacks since israel began its war with hamas following the october 7 terror attack. israel announcing despite a longer war campaign planned, it will start releasing some of its reservists in the coming days. this as the israeli supreme court on monday overturned a law

introduced last summer by prime minister netanyahu's government. the law, which created a divide among israeli citizens and triggered nationwide protests for months prevented judges from overturning government decisions they deemed unreasonable. and at the same time, there's a lot going on behind the scenes. israel sending a team to cairo to discuss a hostage deal. there's no sense of any imminent break through. more than 100 people are being held hostage now. hamas said it will agree to no deal until israel pulls all of its troops out of gaza. george? >> thanks. now the race for the white house. first major test in the republican primary just two weeks away in iowa. donald trump dominating the poll, 30 points ahead of his nearest rivals. rachel scott is tracking the race from the iowa capital. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: george, good morning to you. we are entering that final stretch. the republican candidates will be flooding the state, making their final pitch to voters. of course, that includes the front runner in this race,

former president donald trump, entering the new year still holding that commanding lead. 30 points ahead of his rivals in iowa, 50 points nationally. the former president clearly worried that his supporters might be getting complacent, urging them to turn out for him in just under two weeks. the rest of the field still hoping for a break through. florida governor ron desantis is betting big on iowa. he visited all of 99 counties in the state but he's been losing ground to nikki haley. she's neck and neck with him in iowa. she's already edging him out in new hampshire. the former u.n. ambassador has been playing cleanup the last several days playing cleanup after failing to mention the wor slavery when asked by a voter what caused the civil war. meanwhile, former new jersey governor chris christie facing growing pressure to drop out of the race. he's gone all in on new hampshire. but the state's governor calling his campaign a dead end, saying that nikki haley has the best chance to defeat donald trump

and that christie might be standing in the way, george. >> we have all these different court races around donald trump including maine throwing him off the ballot over the weekend saying he's in violation of the 14th amendment. that's going to the supreme court. >> reporter: exactly. first colorado, now maine. this is the first time a secretary of state has disqualified a presidential candidate from appearing on the ballot, arguing donald trump incited an insurrection. we are learning the trump campaign will appeal both decisions as early as today. as you said, george, the supreme court will likely have the final word on all of this. george? >> rachel scott, thank you very much. eva? the lucky powerball jackpot winner for $842 million out of michigan. let's go to christine winter from wjrt who was outside the store where that winning ticket was sold. good morning. >> reporter: talk about the ultimate start to the new year. people across the country looking at those powerball

that is coming up. >> we are looking forward to that. first top headlines including a fiery plane collision on a tarmac in japan after a plane loaded with 379 passengers landed it crashed into a japanese coast tkpwar plane. passengers and crew were able to get to safety. also right now, the joint terrorism task force is leading the investigation following a deadly car crash outside a new year's eve concert. a large suv collided with an uber driver pulling out of a parking lot by the kodak center as 1,000 people were leaving a concert. both vehicles plowed into pedestrians crossing the street. fire fighters found a dozen gas cans in the large suv. busiest travel season ever getting under way. the tsa expects to screen 2.5 million passengers today. it was an incredible start to the new year for a north carolina woman who fell to the floor after she became the first powerball millionaire of 2024. then she nearly tackled ryan seacrest, who called out her number live on dick clark's new year's rocking eve.

[ laughter ] if i won $1 million unexpectedly. right? we have a lot more ahead, including jeremy renner, one year after his nearly fatal snow plow accident, returning to the hospital that saved his life. that is coming up. right now ian ziering involved in a brawl. several bikers on hollywood boulevard encountered him. the incident was caught on camera. this morning we are hearing from ziering. kayna whitworth has the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. ziering saying this incident has left him deeply concerned about the growing boldness of such groups who disrupt public safety. now, law enforcement calling him the victim in all of this adding a group of bikers were driving recklessly and apparently struck his vehicle. >> hey! >> reporter: this morning authorities investigating this brutal midday attack in

hollywood. in video obtained by tmz, you can see ian ziering exit his vehicle. and throw a punch before a vicious brawl breaks out. authorities say he is the victim in this harrowing new year's eve incident with a group of people riding motorized minibikes. the bikers pummelling him with kicks and punches before he could run across the street. the 59-year-old actor then kicking back before getting away. moments later, he is seen comforting his terrified 12-year-old daughter, who witnessed the whole thing. ziering called the incident alarming but said both he and his daughter are unscathed. according to ziering, he was stuck in traffic and was approached aggressively by one of these riders. he says he got out of his car to assess any damage, which unfortunately escalated into a physical altercation. the actor goes on to say, this situation highlights a larger

issue of houliganism on our streets and the need for effective law enforcement responses to such behavior. authorities now say that the suspects fled the scene before they arrived and they will use that video as part of their on going investigation. an official police report has been filed but no arrests have been made yet. >> thank you, kayna. appreciate that. now we're going to turn to the deadly shark attack in hawaii. a surfer killed at a popular beach. demarco morgan is here with details. >> reporter: michael, good morning. it happened over the weekend. first responders were able to get the victim out of the water, but it would be too late. >> it is a living nightmare. >> reporter: this morning a family grieving after a shark encounter in a popular tourist destination in maui ended in tragedy. authorities investigating the death of 39-year-old jason jay carter, seen here scuba diving prior to the incident after getting bit by a shark while surfing on saturday. >> whether you had a lifetime

with him or five minutes, you felt like a changed person because of his beautiful spirit. >> reporter: carter, a local maui resident, was given medical care at the scene before being rushed to an area hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. >> he wasn't doing anything reckless or strange or out of the norm. >> reporter: this, the first fatality from a shark encounter in hawaii in more than a year. experts say shark encounters aren't limited to just the summer months. we are waiting to learn more details about this incident. guys? >> all right. now to the owner of the carolina panthers under fire after he was caught on camera apparently tossing a drink on to opposing fans. will reeve is back with these details. good morning. >> this is quite something. david tepper, the panthers have been having a miserable season. they're 2-14. their rookie quarterback been having a rough go of it. they fired their coach midseason.

we're back now with the latest on actor jeremy renner' recovery, in a special moment over the weekend where he visited the hospital that saved his life after that devastating snow plow accident. stephanie ramos has the story. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: michael, good morning. actor jeremy renner said knowing he has a lot to fight for helped him survive the after math of that snow plow accident a year ago. he is thanking those who helped him through his remarkable recovery. this morning jeremy renner making a surprise return. the avengers star going back to the hospital in reno, nevada, thanking the staff that helped save his life. >> someone is on the ground, got run over by a snow cam. he's been crushed. >> reporter: the 52-year-old run over by a large snow plow on new year's day 2023. first responders capturing the moment on body camera. the actor's nephew saying renner got out of the plow to check on him. the plow didn't stop.

office facing re-election this year, possible rematch with donald trump. lot of the polls show him, especially in the battleground states trailing or tied with donald trump. what does the white house think about that? how can you turn it around? >> hi, george. happy new year. thank you very much for having me. i'm going to be mindful here. as you know, george, can't really talk about an up coming election but here's what i will say. just taking really baby step back here for a second. last year if you think about the last three years this president has accomplished more than any other president has been able to do in two terms. so we saw the data coming out of last year on the economy and bidenomics and how it's working. you think about 14 million jobs created. unemployment under 4% in 22 months. gas prices going down under 3 bucks in 28 states. those things matter. that's incredibly important. so we're hoping, what we want to do is continue to focus on bidenomics and consider lowering of costs on products for the american people. the president after coming out

of the state of the union, he talked about finishing up the job, right? what he meant by that is continuing to work for veterans, right? making sure we do the work that we need to do there. working on public health issues like cancer and other important critical key things that american people care about. whether it's making roe the law of the land, continuing to work on gun violence. our young people, kids, when it comes to gun violence, guns with the leading killer of kids. we're going to continue to do that work and that's going to be our focus in the upcoming year. >> also facing national security challenges, including war in the middle east and potential now wider war with iran now that they've sent a war ship into the red sea. we've seen battles with the houthi rebels. are you concerned about a wider war? >> so here's what i will say to that. the houthis is a rebel organization. obviously, we take all of this very seriously. the president has said we are ready to act in self-defense if needed.

i'm certainly not going to get into specifics of our military operations. but the president is always and has always been committed to our service member and protecting our service member abroad. that's what the president is going to be committed to. >> the war in ukraine is grinding on. it seemed to escalate over the last several days. but this aid package is still stalled in congress. are you confident you can get it done early this year? >> so look, we have to be confident that it gets done. let's not forget what's going on here. talk about the supplemental where there's been negotiations happening on the hill, even through the holidays, which we appreciate. but look, last week the president put out a statement on what you just stated about what we've seen, continued aggression in ukraine, something we haven't seen since the beginning of the war. we got to remember what ukraine is fighting for. they're fighting for freedom, democracy. this is against president putin, who's doing this aggression. it's not just ukraine that we have to worry about here, george. we're talking about our nato alliance, right? he's not going to stop.

president putin is not going to stop at ukraine. we have to think about, and the president understands this. when we talk about our national security, it's not just abroad but here at home. so we're going to do everything we can, that the brave people of ukraine have what it needs to continue to fight for their democracy. >> also tied up in those negotiations, border security. many american cities now overwhelmed with this immigration crisis. >> look, george. you know, it is really, when we think about the bussing and flights we are seeing from one governor currently right now, governor abbott, that is doing this. using migrants as a political stunt. it's not protecting our communities across the country. it's not making texas any safer. it's shameful. we need to call that out. look, we've been in touch with mayors and governors in the northern part of the country to talk, to give them and provide resources that they may need to deal with the influx. but the president, on day 1 of his administration, put forward an immigration legislation, a comprehensive immigration legislation because he understood how important it was

to deal with border security, an immigration system that's been broken for decades. you see conversations happening in a bipartisan way in the senate. we really appreciate that. we believe it's headed in the right direction. we hope when congress gets back, that we can move forward on those conversations and get things done, to make sure our border is secure. >> karine jean-pierre, thank you. michael? >> thank you, george. now the new state law that took effect when the calendar turned to 2024, from guns to minimum wage, to inclusion programs. chief white house correspondent mary bruce is here now to tell us all about them. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, michael. with the new year comes a new slate of state laws across the country that are having an immediate impact on americans' lives. first up, gun reforms. despite a historic number of mass shootings last year, congress remains dead locked on this issue, so states are now taking action instead. california now taking the biggest step, barring guns in most public places, including

libraries, public parks, churches and sports venues. while illinois is also banning high powered semiautomatic rifles and magazines. colorado is getting rid of those ghost guns, those do it yourself homemade guns. next, the federal minimum wage. it hasn't been raised in nearly 15 years now. still stuck at $7.25 an hour. but once again, we are seeing states taking matters into their own hands. 22 states are raising their minimum wage. many workers will now be making $15 an hour or more. now, we know states have also been battlegrounds for social issues. new restrictions on gender transition care for younger people are now in place. in texas they have now banned offices and programs that promote diversity, equity and inclusion at publicly funded colleges and universities. conservative lawmakers saying those programs stoke racial divisions or push liberal agendas on campuses. lots of changes across the country, eva. >> mary, so nice to have you here in studio in new york here.

>> thank you. >> now another major infant formula recall. hundreds of thousands of cans are being recalled over possible bacterial contamination. rhiannon ally is here with what parents need to know. really concerning this morning. >> absolutely, good morning, eva. this one is a big one for parents of young babies. johnson nutrition is voluntarily recalling 675,000 cans of the nutramigen's hypoallergenic formula. it's a special formula given to infants who are allergic to cows milk. the contamination was found in samples overseas. the company said testing did not turn up any problems here in the u.s. but it divide sided to issue the recall out of an abundance of caution. the company tells abc news it understands the incredible responsibility we have in providing what is often the sole nutrition for infants. there can be no short cuts for this vulnerable population. the company says the recall will not impact any of its other

(♪) ♪ ♪ we are back with our gma cover story. respiratory illnesses are on the rise around the country. 31 states and washington, d.c. experiencing high or very high levels of activity. dr. jen ashton is here with what we need to know about it. seems like every family we know has been hit with this. what can we expect over the next several weeks? >> clearly no one has a chris call ball. we do have data over the past couple years. we know during the holiday season the data is limited coming into the cdc. so we expect, after travel, after people get together, after the data input catches up, we expect to see all three major viruses, rsv, covid and influenza rates go up in

january, as they do most years. that should not be a surprise to anyone. >> and you said respiratory illnesses, rsv, covid. the common cold. they all kind of have similar symptoms. what is the one we're most at risk? >> well, look. i think for all of them, most at risk are people who are not vaccinated. but then there are risk categories. we've heard them before. they bear repeating. infants and children under 5, particularly vulnerable. pregnant women, adults 65 years and over and anyone with a compromised immune system or underlying respiratory illness. but we also have to remember that all three of these viruses, they present with similar symptoms and they can be unpredictable. so we probably all know a person who doesn't fit into those categories who was current and up to date with their vaccinations and boosting who got pretty sick. that's what we need to remember. >> you have an article in your new magazine on newsstands right now. how can you protect yourself? you can't avoid people.

this morning kelsey hatcher, the alabama mom with the rare double uterus who was pregnant with a fetus in each, introducing us to her healthy twin girls roxy and rebel. >> we actually delivered roxy, our first girl in the or. she was born at 7:49. everybody cheered. it was like, oh my gosh, we did it. then reality of like, okay, we have to prepare for the next one. >> reporter: but rebel, well, let's just say she lived up to her name. >> she wasn't quite ready yet so it took about ten hours between the two. at that point 6:00 the next morning we decided it was time for a c-section. >> reporter: the babies born ten hours apart and on two different days. >> they were born on separate days. >> there was even a chance that they could be weeks apart.

and here, you have this beautiful -- let me just hold on to this. you have this beautiful, beautiful chicken. we're going to sauce it. i take some hot oil, just a little bit. put it over a variety of seasoning, chicken, bouillon, hot chilis, garlic. you good with that? >> i'm good with that. good soy sauce, black vinegar. chili crisp. who doesn't like it spicy. you think it's right? >> looks right to me. >> okay. yeah. there you go. we're just going to pour some of this on top. >> oh, yeah. >> add some -- >> bam. >> add some scallions. add some of this. the two or three tablespoons of oil is all the external fat that we put on there. you want to measure that out and just put another tablespoon on there, go ahead. by lightly cooking the ginger, garlic and chilis we maintain

>> exactly. accumulation. i got to save that. i got to eat dessert after i eat chicken. you have been a goodwill ambassador for the world program for the past few years. what kind of work have you been up to? >> the lis is massive, right? have 800 million people around the world that desperately need our help. we have more falling into situations in countries, especially in eastern africa, with famine. weather systems changing around the world have meant we're trying to look at what we can grow where. so the biggest program i'm working on is a pilot program in zambia where we're teaching students to grow their own food so they have a more diverse diet, on location, eating there. attendance is up, test scores are up. they're teaching their parents how to farm with modern farming techniques. and zambia is the size of germany and it's got eight, nine countries around it, several of which are not doing so great. if zambia can become an economic

character who could run around and do irresponsible things. that's how this was born. it all came together in the genres that i hope is entertaining. >> my understanding is many of the characters were based on childhood stories you heard from your grandparents? >> yes. many of the anecdotes were based on stories i heard from my grandmother growing up. if i were to ask my grandmother directly, what was your life like during the war? she would tell me to mind my own business, get back to my chores and leave her alone. i learned that if i just let her go about her day, she would talk up a storm and all of these stories started to come up, like how they were always hungry, or she was nearly killed by an air strike when she was bicycling home. >> some of the themes are very epic, whether it's colonialism, or occupation or the classism that exists. why did you want to tackle those issues?

>> tacking on a day or two before or after winter or spring break has been a relatively normal occurrence for some families, but now some parents emboldened by the rise of remote work and schooling in the pandemic are fed up with high prices of peak season travel and are saying yes to taking their kids out of school to travel. spending quality family time is essential. and more and more families with kids are opting to take family vacations while school is still in session. meet the fernandez family. mom, dad, two kids, the eldest in first grade, the youngest is 2 years old and stays home with mom. they travel during the school year to save money and to give the kids a break from routines. >> my family and i like to take vacations during the school year, let's say maybe twice during the year, if not at least once. >> the fernandezes say vacationing during the off season means it's also less crowded. >> it's quite affordable

compared to going during the summer. air fare, hotels and everything are going to be much more expensive. >> the bakaly family also take family trips when school is in. >> if you can go between september/october, that seems to be when crowds are down, prices are down, and then the same in february after president's day. i think people aren't traveling right before spring break. >> but educators are worried about the impact of missing class on kids. >> showing up to school every day, re-establishing that routine of everyday attendance is critical. it helps lower anxiety, helps make sure they develop good habits that are important for success in school. >> reporter: for the majority of american family, the family travel association says summer and spring still remains the top time to vacation, but 56% of

respondents to the survey found the timing of school breaks are a challenge, and 59% cited affordability as their most pressing issue. these families say taking the kids on vacation is beneficial, adding that traveling can be educational because the kids get to learn new experiences. >> i feel like even though we have a long summer break, having your kids just going to school and home and back and forth, it gets pretty repetitive. i think doing these family vacations is definitely helpful, not only for the kids but for the family as a whole. >> educators stress the significance of consistent learning for students' academic success. they say missing school can create gaps in knowledge an learning that might be challenging to bridge. some parents argue the experiences gained toward travel can also contribute to a child's education. guys, in my household, the kids are sticking with the school calendar. they're not missing any days of school. and they're organizing.

death, it makes us more productive and less stressed. >> you also talk about time blocking. what is that? >> time blocking is basically where instead of trying to use a to do list to figure out what you need to do, you'll use your calendar. the problem with a two do list is it's long. you can keep adding more things to it. the nice thing about a calendar is it's finite. it forces you to prioritize what are the true things that matter to you? rather than just -- as we all do, just tack things on. >> which things you're going to do just today? >> exactly. >> that seems to make sense. if people want to begin their year with this new mind set, what's the first tip you give them? >> first tip i would say, if there's one thing you do at the start of every day, ask yourself, what is today's adventure going to be? that question asks you to figure out what's your most important task for that day? if you just do that, you'll be productive. but framing it as an adventure encourages you to find the fun in it. encourages you to approach it with more of the sense of play. what is today's adventure going to be? >> is this your adventure for today? >> this is my adventure for today.
