20-24 rain coming down across the bay area and we are not done yet, as the sierra sees some much needed snow and our coastlines could be in for more damaging surf. good evening, i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. that rain is still coming down tonight and more showers are on the way tomorrow. >> yeah, we are currently in the midst of a level one storm on our abc seven exclusive storm impact scale, but even with that, we still saw those brief heavy downpours. today we did. >> let's touch base with abc seven news meteorologist sandyha patel tracking it for us tonight. sandy. yeah. >> and dan, right now we are still seeing some brief heavy rain. so let's get you right into live doppler seven. and

let's talk about where it is coming down the south bay. got soaked tonight. right now it is moving across morgan hill, heading out towards 101 leavesley road into gilroy. we have seen some downpours in the north bay as well. from fairfax to mill valley, miller avenue, muir beach, you are getting some pockets of heavier rain. there is a flood advisory for sonoma county until 11:15 p.m. some of the smaller creeks have already seen flooding, and that flooding has translated onto the roadways as well. so that's not out of the question. as we look at the east bay livermore five 8-80 steady rain around concannon boulevard, widening the picture here and that area of low pressure associated with the cold front that is now inland is still coming. and that cold front is what we're keeping an eye on because there is still instability with this upper level low that is moving in our direction. certainly snowing in the sierra. and as we go hour by hour, still some scattered pockets of heavy rain for the morning commute between 5 and 630 could even see some

thunderstorms as we head into 9 a.m. a few more showers, winds right now gusting sustained. i should say 35. diablo oakland hills, 26 miles an hour. it's a level one through tomorrow morning with those scattered downpours, gusty winds, slight chance of thunder, rough and dangerous surf beginning to develop and look at this. hello winter! it is snowing heavily right now in the sierra nevada. this is a live view from zephyr cove. i'll be back with a full look at that forecast, including a warning coming right up. >> dan okay, sandy, thanks a lot. let's stay up in tahoe for a moment. snow is really coming down tonight around the tahoe area. this is what it looked like in state line on the south shore. 8-80 has turned into a real mess. westbound traffic is being held at applegate because of spinouts. those headed east need chains starting at cisco go on highway 50. chains are required uh- one and a half miles west of kyburz to myers, the sierra needs all the snow it can get though, so this is good news today. snow survey revealed the snowpack is just 235% of its historical average for this time

of year. >> we'll get ready for more of this. you are looking at the view from sky seven earlier today over pacifica, and the waves will be bigger tomorrow. the national weather service issued a high surf advisory starting tomorrow at 4 a.m. through thursday morning for waves between 19 and 23ft. while it's fun to check out the waves, it can be dangerous. as we saw with last week's storms, the waves can easily pull people into the ocean from rocks, jetties and beaches. and don't forget, you can track the rain yourself with the same live doppler seven that sandhya and our weather team use. just search abc seven bay area in your device's app store to down to download it. >> all right, let's move now to critical new details about the arrests in the killing of officer oakland police officer twan lee. yeah. >> one suspect we're learning was tracked to a la quinta inn in livermore. >> now, detectives are starting to connect the dots here in the death of officer lee. he was shot last week while working undercover for responding to an early morning burglary of a cannabis shop along the city's waterfront. >> it is the department's first line of duty death in more than

a decade. and tonight, abc seven news reporter tim johns has the latest in the case. >> nearly four days after the murder of officer twan lee, the oakland police department confirming tuesday the arrest of a suspect. sharing the news first with lee's fellow officers over dispatch radio. >> i just want to advise everybody that the killer of officer twan lee is in custody. please take care of each one of you. >> way was shot and killed friday morning when he attempted to stop a robbery at a local cannabis shop. there's a terrible pall of sadness. >> that's fallen over every oakland police officer. barry donovan is the president of the oakland police officers association. >> he says since the shooting, opd has been working nonstop to try and catch those responsible. >> you are going to jail. you are going to be behind bars. we are going to find you. >> in a press release, opd saying they've arrested several people in connection to lee's death, one of those arrests happening in the early hours of tuesday morning at a la quinta

inn in livermore, according to one employee, the fact that so many arrests were made so quickly tells me that this has been an all hands on deck investigation by agencies throughout the bay area, legal analyst stephen clark says with such a high profile case, prosecutors will likely try and get court proceedings moving as quickly as possible. he also tells me police are probably in constant talks with several of those arrested, trying to get more information on those at the center of the crime. it's also important, though, that that information be corroborated by the forensic evidence, by the video evidence and in particular the ballistic evidence in this case. ultimately, the decision to charge those involved will lie with alameda county district attorney pamela price, someone who donilon says has been in regular communication with law enforcement over the case. >> i think they understand and the importance of charging the people who killed an oakland police officer or anyone attached to them, committing crimes in the city of oakland, in oakland. >> tim johns, abc seven news.

active runway when they weren't supposed to. it's one of the busiest airports in japan, and many people travel over. >> of course, the new year holidays back here at home, bart trains are back on the move again as normal tonight in the east bay. >> after that sudden derailment and fire early monday morning, bart officials say investigators are still trying to figure out exactly why two cars jumped the tracks near the orinda station, sending nine people to the hospital with minor injuries. lots of things could come out that we don't know, right now, but what we believe right now is it was not not a track issue. >> it was not a train issue. what we are left with and what what most of what we know points to is human error. now if human error is indeed to blame here, there will be changes. >> we're told, including new training and new protocols. this was the fifth bart derailment in the last 15 years. all in the east bay. >> new at 11. an artist in san jose is looking for his

sculpture that was stolen on new year's day. he says he had been working on it for months and this isn't your average work of art. abc seven news reporter ryan curry has more on the mystery to get it back. >> i cut the metal, bend the metal, weld the metal together. >> bending metal is rosenberg's passion. >> every day, six hours a day, grinding and welding, grinding and welding. >> turning thick pieces of steel into beautiful sculptures. it's work that requires enormous levels of time and discipline. >> it's kind of like making a skirt or a piece of clothing. then the pieces are stitched together with a welder and then ground down. >> he was in the middle of working on his latest piece, a tall structure with detailed metal rods and curving on the side. it's now gone. someone stole it on new year's day. it's nine feet tall by about eight feet wide, nine feet deep, weighs about 600 pounds, just wasn't there. rosenberg brought it outside so the metal could rust, giving it a distinct reddish brown color. he says, is necessary for the design to

prevent the sculpture from being damaged. he bolted it to the ground outside his san jose studio. that's one bolt that is two bolts. did you think somebody was going to be able to move it the way that no, i really didn't think that someone was going to come with a pickup truck and drag it out of here. surveillance video from a neighboring business shows a white pickup truck driving by and parking in front of the studio. someone gets out and dislodges the sculpture and drives off. it's inconceivable to me that someone would drive down the road with one of my pieces behind it. >> fillled a report with police. >> the sheets of metal he uses sometimes cost thousands. he had plans to put this piece in a gallery one day, but the time and money spent to achieve that are gone. this recent theft must have been. >> it's a blow. it's for sure a blow in san jose. >> ryan curry, abc seven news. we'll keep you updated on the investigation into that. >> can you believe someone would steal that piece of sculpture? well, happening now, a danger advisory is in effect for a lake in the east bay state. water

officials posted the advisory today for lake del valle in alameda county. they're cautioning people to stay away from blue green algae blooms is happening in the lake. exposure to toxic algae can lead to rashes, skin and eye irritation, stomach problems and in rare cases, serious illness, illness, even death. no word on how long this advisory will last, but we'll keep you updated and check this out. >> an old bomb washed ashore in santa cruz county happened at the pajaro dunes on new year's eve. the bomb squad was called out as a precaution, but quickly deemed it safe and removed it from the beach. this beach was one of the places that evacuated last week during those high waves and high surf warnings, racing to the election season, a new challenger to donald trump emerging with a crucial debate coming next week. plus, we've all heard about the trend by now. but what's the truth about dropping the alcohol for dry january? >> and what do you want to be when you grow up? meet the young man who has his mind made up and is well on his way.

above 4000ft and up to two feet for the highest peaks with gusty winds, very difficult travel on the other side, the tahoe side under a winter weather advisory. so let's check out live doppler seven. a wider picture showing you that we have the area of low pressure off the coastline. even though the front has pushed inland, we're still dealing with the unstable air associated with the second part of this system. so when we look at local live doppler seven, you will see exactly where we are seeing some light modate rain right now. some brief pockets of heavier rain falling right around tiburon, heading in towards the bolinas area. so watch out. san francisco, bayview district, mission street, brisbane you will notice some heavier rain as well. rainfall rates have been really just picking up as this storm has been coming in now between morgan hill and san martin, highway 101, monterey road. this is really a rough go right now. rainfall. so far pretty good in bend, lomond in a short amount

of time. we're talking over an inch of rain close to an inch there in santa rosa, kentfield third of an inch in san francisco, 4/10 oakland. napa. you're looking at a third of an inch in concord. livermore 4900 san jose. i know you typically tend to be in the rain shadow of the santa cruz mountains. don't get as much, but this time around you got a soaking 4000/300 of an inch of rain. here's a look at the storm concerns through morning standing water on the roadways. it's a high likelihood we've already seen it. creek flooding uh- seeing that in the north bay. that's going to continue and power outages will remain low and sierra snow high likelihood as it is snowing right now. temperatures at this hour, 40s and 50s san jose. cameras showing you some rain overnight into the morning. brief heavy rain, gusty winds. we do have that winter storm warning with the heavy snow in the sierra and an unsettled pattern late in the week as another system comes in here on our storm impact scale through tomorrow morning. this is a level one. scattered downpours, gusty winds, slight chance of thunder, rough and dangerous surf is beginning to develop. hour by hour. we go 5:00
