plane that was on the same runway. experts are describing everything that went wrong and what went right. >> here's abc's lionel moise with more this morning. >> new details on how hundreds of passengers escaped this fiery plane collision in tokyo. a japan airlines plane erupting in flames after landing and crashing into a japanese coast guard plane on the same runway. jack and matthew say they saw the explosion from the terminal and showed these photos of. after the fire, the tail of the japan airlines plane smashing to the ground. in the aftermath. >> over the past couple of years, we've had numerous instances where airplanes came very close to hitting each other when they moved out on a runway, when they weren't supposed to, flames trailing the airbus with 379 people on board, passengers racing to emergency slides, everyone escaping before the plane was engulfed. >> experts say this type of plane is made of special material that stops fire from spreading rapidly. it was very

fortunate that the collision did not rupture the fuel tanks on the jal aircraft, and so the fire that you saw was fairly well contained. >> well, after the airplane came to a stop that gave the passengers enough time to get off and get away from the airplane before the fire consumed the rest of the hull. >> u.s. authorities have warned of an increasing number of close calls at american airports. a shortage of air traffic controllers blamed as one factor in the growing list of near misses in the us. >> there's been a lot of attention paid to these close calls and these runway incursion is congress having hearings, but it takes money and it takes technology. flashing lights, ground radar. there are technology fixes. they just aren't being put in place fast enough. >> experts are praising the quick evacuation of the japan airlines plane, with passengers following instructions, leaving their personal items behind. planes are required to prove they can be evacuated within 90s

for emergencies like this, but that's not always the case. many back in 2016, the ntsb called the evacuation of an american airlines flight at o'hare airport too close for comfort after the engine caught fire. some passengers disregarded crew members instructions, taking their carry on luggage with them, which could slow the evacuation. five of the six crew members on that coast guard plane died. they had been delivering aid for earthquake survivors. the investigation will focus in part on communication from the airport control tower to find out why that smaller plane was on the runway, rhiannon. andrew. lionel. >> thank you. meanwhile, more than 60 people are now confirmed dead after that earthquake hit western japan. dozens of people are believed to be trapped in collapsed buildings. the area was hit by a strong aftershock today we turn now to the crisis that the southern border suburbs in the northern us are fighting back. >> they're angry over texas sending busses packed with migrants to their towns. now

four suburbs near chicago are taking action. abc's ike ejiochi is here now with the details. ike good morning. >> hey. good morning ryan. and as the suburbs take action. president biden answered a question about that crisis while returning to the white house last night. returning from his holiday trip in the caribbean. reporters asked president biden about the record number of migrants at the southern border, something they ought to give me the money i need to protect the building. a white house official says negotiations on border funding are moving in the right direction, even as republicans insist new aid for ukraine be tied to increased us border security. today, house speaker mike johnson, along with 60 other republican lawmakers, are set to visit the border in texas . the influx of migrants is now hitting american suburbs far from the border. hundreds of migrants were dropped off at bus and train stations outside new york city after mayor eric adams issued an order requiring busses

carrying migrants into new york give 32 hours notice. a similar situation in chicago, where four suburbs passed an ordinance last night prohibiting the transport of large groups of people without an approved application. >> before we begin bussing illegal immigrants up to new york, it was just texas and arizona that bore the brunt of all of the chaos. now, the rest of america is understanding exactly what is going on since 2022, texas governor greg abbott has bussed more than 80,000 migrants from texas to so-called sanctuary cities. >> what texas is doing is bonkers. mayor adams administration furious with abbott even comparing him to the joker in the dark knight. >> there's a line in it that some men can't be reasoned with or negotiated with. >> some men just want to watch the world burn. greg abbott is that man. >> mayor adams says he does not want to revoke new york's sanctuary city status, but does not want to be required to

shelter the migrants. now, here's some good news. border authorities say the high level of migrant crossings has dropped off in recent days, allowing them to reopen four border crossings tomorrow. andrew. all right. ike, thank you. >> new jersey senator bob menendez already under indictment for an alleged bribery scheme, is facing a new corruption charge. he's accused of accepting bribes in return for helping the gulf nation of qatar. prosecutors say he received designer watches and cash. he and his wife were indicted in october for allegedly taking gold bars for helping egypt's government. he has refused calls to resign, police say a break in at colorado supreme court is not related to the court's recent ruling on whether donald trump should be on the state ballot. >> police say a man opened fire in the building after a car crash and briefly held a security guard. the suspect surrendered after a standoff overseas. >> hamas and hezbollah are vowing to retaliate for a drone strike that killed a top hamas leader in beirut. if confirmed, this would be israel's first attack on beirut since 2006. it

follows weeks of attacks between israeli soldiers and hezbollah fighters in lebanon. >> we have new details on the airline that sent a boy traveling alone to the wrong destination. he was flown to puerto rico instead of cleveland . here's abc's andrea fujii this morning. >> the father of a teenager who mistakenly got on the wrong flight over the holiday break is speaking out. he has flown with us many times before, but his first time flying alone on the friday before christmas, 16 year old logan was supposed to fly from tampa, florida, to cleveland, ohio on frontier airlines to visit his mom, but instead he ended up in puerto rico. >> if it goes up to the gate attendant, he they check his personal item in the little slot and then they look at his phone, which has the boarding pass. they don't ever scan it and set it down and scan it, which would have just alerted them. >> frontier says the flights to puerto rico and cleveland left from the same gate with the puerto rico flight leaving earlier. logan father says when his son saw passengers at his

gate boarding, he simply joined them. and just like in the movie home alone two, welcome aboard american airlines flight 176 nonstop to new york. >> when kevin ended up in new york city, logan also did notrillionealize. >> he was on the wrong flight until it was too late. >> exactly like home alone two, where kevin puts on the music and the flight attendants start talking about where they're going, and he can't hear anything. that's exactly what happened with logan frontier says. >> it doesn't offer an unaccompanied minor program. the airline saying logan was immediately flown back to tampa on the same aircraft and accommodated on a flight to cleveland the following day, adding frontier has extended its sincere apologies to the family for the error. this wasn't the first airline mistake over christmas, a six year old was traveling alone on spirit airlines from philadelphia to fort myers, florida, but was instead placed on a flight to orlando, so the gate agent was fired. and as for this latest incident, frontier airlines hasn't said how logan got on the
