before showers return here tomorrow. live. look outside. here's the exploratorium camera. it is quiet out there. partly cloudy conditions. we had a couple of light showers move through in the overnight hours. you can see that moisture is now pushing off to the south and east. any cloud cover with it is pushing out as well, and that means we're going to have a lot of sunshine today. but we do have a beach hazard statement in effect along our coastline for the increased risk of rip currents and sneaker waves, all day today. so we'll watch that very closely. temperatures. right now we're waking up to the 40s and low 50s and we're on our way to the upper 50s and lower 60s. later on this afternoon, so we're expecting a lot of sunshine, very similar to yesterday. bright conditions today. upper 50s to lower 60s by 3 p.m. tomorrow though, rain returns here locally, we're still tracking heavy snow coming to the sierra. we'll break down all those details coming up in eight minutes. let's check in with gloria and see how traffic is doing this morning. >> good morning drew. right now we want to tell you about a sigalert that's in effect. this is a live look at the

richmond-san rafael bridge. and of course, they have that had that sig alert for the right three lanes blocked. but right now they also are blocking a center lane there because of emergency pothole repairs. that's going to be blocked until 6 a.m. and that's westbound 580 on the decline. so of course we'll be getting more information for you throughout the morning about this. >> thank you. gloria, happening today, an intense morning for a store in downtown oakland. in just a few hours at 10:00, a public vigil will be held to mourn the police officer killed last week. and then an hour after that, people are planning to rally outside of city hall to urge leaders to declare a state of emergency. organizers of that rally say doing so would help to speed the process of getting a permanent police chief. here's abc seven news reporter j.r. stone. >> as someone who has lost a child, you know i'm really tired of all the death in our city. >> donald lacey, who daughter lois shea was killed in oakland back in 1997, is react to what we have seen in oakland in recent years and this past year,

a 2023 that saw a rise in robberies, burglaries, stolen vehicles and homicides, 126 homicides total, including a police officer. >> it is so painful to me, as someone who was reared in what used to be the one of the greatest cities in the planet in the mid 60s, when i was a kid, and in the 70s, friday, community members in oakland will hold two events a vigil in chinatown for tuan lei, the oakland police officer who was killed last week, and a rally outside of oakland city hall to demand that mayor shang tao and council members declare a state of emergency to help speed the process in getting a permanent police chief, something the city has not had since last february. >> i don't need to wait to april may for another police chief. we got to do this a lot sooner. >> and remember that, uh, the mayor has promised us that, you know, by by the end of this year, uh, we should have a

police chief, uh, or should be calling for the state of emergency. so i think that's a that's the reason why many people, uh, um, i think some people are extremely, extremely upset. >> but lacey questions the implications of what a state of emergency for residents would mean, and says it's important to get the right chief. >> i don't want to rush and hire somebody who's doesn't know oakland. it has to me, to me, be someone who's from oakland. >> there will be a buddhist ceremony friday when officer lei is remembered in oakland's chinatown. lacey believes coming together is key. >> moving forward, we have to start caring for each other, start loving each other, being more considerate for each other. i know these sounds trite and true. uh, trite things to some people, but it has to start with basic human decency. i wish j.r. i knew the answer if i did, i would be promulgating it from the highest mountain. but one thing i do know, we have to do better. >> j.r. stone, abc seven news.

the two men charged with the murder of officer lei will remain in custody without bail. >> 27 year old mark sanders and 28 year old allen brown made their first appearances in court yesterday. both of them charged with murder. sanders is also facing a special allegation that he knew lei was a police officer during that attack. they are set to return to court january 18th to enter pleas. >> in berkeley. tensions are boiling over between police and protesters at people's park yesterday. demonstrators got physical near cal's campus, according to berkeleyside, 11 people in total were arrested. it started when uc berkeley officials began blocking off the park with shipping containers. for years, the university has been wanting to build student housing on the contested open space. protesters trying to stop construction want to preserve the landmark? >> we need a place where

community members can find each other and learn about their history of berkeley. that's a human right. knowing what your culture is, having water, having food, what we're doing out here is taking advantage of a time of the year when we have very few students, very few people here to be able to do this as safely and as quickly as possible. >> the project is now before the state supreme court. >> construction cannot start until they make a ruling. uc berkeley says streets around people's park will remain closed until the construction site is secured. this map shows the affected area and that includes channing way, hayes street, dwight way and bowditch street. >> new details on a deadly mass shooting at a high school in iowa. iowa. we're learning a sixth grader was killed and five others, including the principal, were hurt. gloria is at the live desk with more on what happened. gloria >> kumasi. this shooting happened on the first day back from winter break. police swarmed the school within minutes of that shooting, and they found multiple victims as students and staff sheltered in place, and some ran from the

building. police identified the shooter as a seven year old student at the high school. middle and high school students were there for a breakfast program. a ninth grader saw the suspect in the bathroom before the shooting. >> it's just traumatizing because honestly, he could have just killed me then and there and i wouldn't be here right now and everything is broken. >> like everyone. like running and like my after that, my, my, like like my mom was telling me to get out of there in social media posts reviewed by abc news, the suspect referenced school shootings and bomb threats. >> in one post, he can be seen holding a revolver. the suspect's friends say he and his sister were bullied, and police have not confirmed a motive for the shooting, according to the gun violence archive, there have already been five mass shootings, so far this year. reggie >> thank you. gloria. on the peninsula, the pacifica pier will be closed for three weeks as it undergoes structural assessment. city officials say the high tides and large waves

in late december damaged sections of the deck and the railing. the pier is a quarter mile long. it's very popular. the city says up to 2000 people visit each day, and it is one of the few piers where people can fish for free every day that people are allowed on it. >> there are people fishing a lot. these are people who do it for a living, you know, do it to feed their families and stuff. um, and so it's a really critical part of pacifica. >> the city says it will combine the findings of the assessment with a separate structural assessment from last spring. for a final report, the public works director estimates repairs could cost more than $20 million. if you're looking for something to do this weekend in capitola village is fully open again for business restaurants and stores are operational after spending nearly a week cleaning up. powerful waves hit the town last week, turning the main road into a muddy mess. the community came together with shovels, along with the help of a backhoe to clear that mud. that same area was inundated by brutal surf

just a year ago, and reggie 5-08 this morning we have a beach hazard statement along our coast today for the increased risk of sneaker waves and rip currents. >> this morning, a live look from sfo. we have partly cloudy skies as the morning commute gets underway here. we're not seeing many issues at all. we don't have any fog out there this morning. just a few partly cloudy conditions. we expect a lot of sunshine today. it is chilly. we're starting out in the 40s for the most part, but we'll bounce back nicely later on this afternoon if you like. yesterday, you'll love today. it's pretty much a carbon copy forecast. lots of sunshine temperatures going into the upper 50s and lower 60s by about 3 p.m. live doppler seven along with satellite over night. last night we had a couple of lingering showers at a press through. we're dry all day today , but tomorrow here comes our next storm system. this area of low pressure. now in the gulf of alaska is going to slide down the coastline and bring us some light showers tomorrow on the abc seven storm impact scale. it's a level one for saturday light scattered showers. we'll keep that rough surf along the

coastline and rainfall totals likely less than a quarter of an inch locally. but in the sierra, a winter storm warning starts tomorrow morning. we're talking 1 to 2ft of snow. snow rates could approach two inches per hour. that is blinding snow and those snow levels could drop to 2000ft. and travel is going to be difficult if not impossible, starting tomorrow morning. now, reggie will go into detail with this snow in the rain coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks, drew. monster trucks taking over oracle park in san francisco. up next, a sneak peek as to what to expect this weekend and an issue over the oakland coliseum. >> why the city's new minor league team is being boxed out by the a's. bad advice is being circulated around tahoe, new fliers and encouraging people to feed the bears a live look outside

the way to the mexico border. the delays have been to protect groups of migrating whales from becoming entangled in fishing equipment. a mysterious flier is going around lake tahoe with a passionate message telling people to feed the bears. abc7 news reporter tim johns is hearing more about the trouble that lies with the trash. >> the alarm is rising in lake tahoe this week after this flier was found posted around the area . the flier calling attention to the local bear population, saying things like the black bears of lake tahoe are some of the most marginalized and oppressed species of life, and that they spend most of their life going from garbage can to garbage can, finding it locked due to selfish, heartless human beings leaving the bears with absolutely no choice but to starve to death or attempt a home invasion. finally the flier calls on people to actually feed the bears. >> after my first read, i couldn't even decide if is this some kind of sick joke that someone's trying to play on the community? >> 2g cylch is a local tahoe bear expert who says the

information and the flier is false. he says on wednesday, he saw dozens of them posted around south lake tahoe and began taking them down. >> i only pulled about two thirds of them down as i went through town, and it took me two hours. >> experts say these fliers aren't just full of misinformation, though. they tell me that if people take them seriously, they could cause long terme damage to the tahoe bear population. peter tierra of california fish and wildlife tells me he's aware of the fliers and that his department is telling people not to follow them. tierra says feeding bears human food ultimately causes harm to both the animals and people they look for. >> they become addicted to it. they get dependent on it and their behavior changes. you know, it gets more brazen. we see it escalate. >> fish and wildlife is one of several organizations that has called out the posters in recent days. experts say bears are perfectly capable of surviving on their own and better off without human handouts. anne bryant of the bear league says the fliers are antithetical to the values held by most tahoe residents. >> it's disgusting, and a in a

complete it's against everything environment, mentally friendly and pro bear. >> that's why, even though no one knows where the fliers came from, she's determined to find out. >> we've got 250 volunteers and 3000 members, and i'm going to put everybody on heightened alert to find out who's doing this in san francisco. >> tim johns, abc seven news. the developments with draymond green's possible return to the warriors. >> espn is reporting green is going to be back at the team's facility soon, so he can prepare to play in games. the nba suspended draymond green indefinitely after this happened last month. he hit a player in the face during a game against the phenix suns. he's been ordered by the league to complete league mandated counseling sessions. green missed his 11th game last night as the warriors faced defending champions denver nuggets at the oakland a's. don't want to play

at the coliseum anymore, but it's not stopping them from preventing another team that does the vegas bound a is to blocked the new oakland ballers minor league team from playing a game on the coliseum in june, citing exclusive rights to the building for professional baseball. the ballers are an expansion team in the independent pioneer league. they say they had a signed contract and paid a deposit with the firm that operates the stadium. team officials say they're disappointed but added added nothing will be stopping them from turning the page on a new chapter for baseball in oakland. >> it's time to rev up your engines, monster jam has made its way back to san francisco after more than a decade. they're taking over oracle park, home to the giants. that's where abc seven news reporter lena howland is live. now with one of the drivers you're going to see this weekend. hi, lena. >> hey, reggie. good morning to you. that's right, monster jam is back in san francisco for the first time in more than a decade. and the team here from monster jam woke up nice and

early for us to show off some of their monster trucks. and we're bringing in one of their drivers that you're going to see out here this weekend. inside of oracle park. this is adam anderson, and he is the driver of grave digger. i'm sure many of you watching at home are pretty familiar with grave digger. it's been iconic and it's one of the most decorated monster trucks. so adam, tell me a little a little bit about grave digger for those who might not be familiar with it. >> well, it's pretty cool. and actually, my father, dennis anderson, is the creator of grave digger, and he created in 1982, created me in 1985. this has been my entire life. um, i myself, i can't even remember if i've been here to oracle park. i've been driving for over 18 years now, and i ran all around the nation, all around the world , and. but we're back here. it's been a long time. we're excited for it. and i know there's a lot of fans in the in the area that have been to many of the events. but, you know, this is every time is something new. it's new for us, new track, there's new trucks. but there's one thing that hasn't changed and that's grave digger and what we're

going to do out there. >> that's right, that's right. okay, adam, so tell me a little bit about your career. i hear that you are a five time monster jam world champion. >> yeah. that's correct. five time world champion. and i think i've won, like, a series championships where i whipped everybody's butt and got all the points every season. i think i've done that 3 or 4 times now. and so sometimes people get sick of seeing us win. my dad started as the underdog and now, you know, here we are, team grave digger. and you know, it's been over 40 years. we're still out here and now we're on top of the world. and look, we're in oracle park. we're here to have some fun. and what's exciting to me is actually we're starting the events a little bit earlier for the families. i'm excited for that because there's a lot i see the kids out here sleeping, you know, they're worried about it being loud. so there's kids sleeping in the stands. well, that's not happening anymore because it's going to be early. you're going to get out here, you're going to have some fun with us. >> okay. and then last question real quick. tell me about the course here. what people are going to see inside of oracle park. >> so it's pretty amazing what the crew, the track crew does

very comfortable going into the upper 50s to lower 60s. so get out and enjoy if you can. the weather is looking absolutely delightful today. tonight though, we'll find some changes. clouds begin to move in ahead of our next storm system. we'll drop into the 30s and 40s, and then we'll track thatrillionain on saturday. here's future weather. we'll begin early saturday with mostly cloudy skies right around 10:11 a.m. we'll find some light to moderate showers moving into the north bay early on into the afternoon. by 1:02 p.m, those showers in the east bay, the south bay and along the peninsula. and that storms wrapping up by about 4 or 5 p.m. any wet weather is out of here. we turn to clear skies and we're drying out for sunday. rainfall totals on the low side, most areas just picking up less than a quarter of an inch of rain. maybe a few higher spots in the north bay. we find those showers early on. this is a big snow maker for the sierra winter storm warning begins tomorrow morning. we're talking 1 to 2ft of snow. here's a look at the snowfall forecast. if you're traveling to tahoe today, no problems. it's tomorrow.

understand that this is pretty much all homemade. it really is. >> and honestly, so the entire body is just a fiberglass shell that protects everything that the structural integrity of the truck uh- the roll cage, all the safety equipment, the suspension on, you know. but the coolest part about it, the body is all hand painted. it's awesome. so it's all airbrushed. you can actually feel the body and you can feel all the brush strokes and stuff like that. not all of the trucks are like that anymore, but that's kind of the mystique of grave digger and but that's just something my dad is creating. and now myself and all my siblings are carrying it on. >> oh my gosh. >> amazing. and that's a total of four kids. you and three other siblings. yes. >> and then we have, you know, three other team members after that. so grave diggers around the nation around the world seven times this coming weekend. so it's a pretty unbelievable thing. >> wow. and tell us a little bit about the engine and the power that goes into this. >> so you know, it has 1500 horsepower. it's based off of like a big block chevrolet truck. but it's all nothing is factory piece. everything is custom made for this. and that enables us to do some of these unbelievable stunts. the tricks

where the balancing acts that we do, um, and sometimes we accidentally do these tricks, and then we got to recreate them on purpose. and sometimes we, the kids show us in video games and they're like, well, maybe we could actually do that. and then we're able to create actual obstacles that make us do those stunts. so like right behind us, right here, we have an awesome obstacle that we have developed and it doesn't look like much, but you can actually do backflips off of this. this is one of the backflip ramps that is located on the track that the dirt crew has come out here, and they take a lot of hours to get it just right. the measurements and i know it seems very simple, but it takes a lot to make a 12,000 pound truck do a perfect backflip. >> that is incredible. well, we are excited to see you go over this ramp this weekend. and for those of you interested in coming out to monster jam, it's going to be happening. this weekend. it kicks off tomorrow with a pit party at 1230. doors open up at 330 and the event starts at five on sunday. doors open at 1230 and it starts at two in the afternoon, and tickets for this start at just $20. live in san francisco lena

snow with winter storm warnings in effect today, though, it's all about bright sunshine, a really spectacular forecast. upper 50s, lower 60s. could it get any better in the middle of january? if we're not talking rain, we have bright skies and 59in the city, 60 in oakland, 62 in san jose. overnight tonight after midnight, clouds will come on back ahead of our next storm system. we'll dip into the 30s and into the 40s. tomorrow is forecast. those showers are very light and very scattered in nature. most of us will end up with less than a quarter of an inch of rain. as this front moves through, but we are talking about the potential for 1 to 2ft of snow in the sierra winter storm warnings do begin at 4 a.m. tomorrow morning. you can see snow totals in a lot of areas. more than a foot. i think some of our highest peaks could exceed two feet of snow. so looking at the tahoe forecast, if you're trying to get up there today, you'll have no problems. it's mostly sunny and we're dry. it's tomorrow though. conditions go downhill, travel will be difficult, if not impossible as that heavy snow is falling and then early sunday morning we
