richmond-san rafael bridge. and of course, they have that had that sig alert for the right three lanes blocked. but right now they also are blocking a center lane there because of emergency pothole repairs. that's going to be blocked until 6 a.m. and that's westbound 580 on the decline. so of course we'll be getting more information for you throughout the morning about this. >> thank you. gloria, happening today, an intense morning for a store in downtown oakland. in just a few hours at 10:00, a public vigil will be held to mourn the police officer killed last week. and then an hour after that, people are planning to rally outside of city hall to urge leaders to declare a state of emergency. organizers of that rally say doing so would help to speed the process of getting a permanent police chief. here's abc seven news reporter j.r. stone. >> as someone who has lost a child, you know i'm really tired of all the death in our city. >> donald lacey, who daughter lois shea was killed in oakland back in 1997, is react to what we have seen in oakland in recent years and this past year,

a 2023 that saw a rise in robberies, burglaries, stolen vehicles and homicides, 126 homicides total, including a police officer. >> it is so painful to me, as someone who was reared in what used to be the one of the greatest cities in the planet in the mid 60s, when i was a kid, and in the 70s, friday, community members in oakland will hold two events a vigil in chinatown for tuan lei, the oakland police officer who was killed last week, and a rally outside of oakland city hall to demand that mayor shang tao and council members declare a state of emergency to help speed the process in getting a permanent police chief, something the city has not had since last february. >> i don't need to wait to april may for another police chief. we got to do this a lot sooner. >> and remember that, uh, the mayor has promised us that, you know, by by the end of this year, uh, we should have a

police chief, uh, or should be calling for the state of emergency. so i think that's a that's the reason why many people, uh, um, i think some people are extremely, extremely upset. >> but lacey questions the implications of what a state of emergency for residents would mean, and says it's important to get the right chief. >> i don't want to rush and hire somebody who's doesn't know oakland. it has to me, to me, be someone who's from oakland. >> there will be a buddhist ceremony friday when officer lei is remembered in oakland's chinatown. lacey believes coming together is key. >> moving forward, we have to start caring for each other, start loving each other, being more considerate for each other. i know these sounds trite and true. uh, trite things to some people, but it has to start with basic human decency. i wish j.r. i knew the answer if i did, i would be promulgating it from the highest mountain. but one thing i do know, we have to do better. >> j.r. stone, abc seven news.

the two men charged with the murder of officer lei will remain in custody without bail. >> 27 year old mark sanders and 28 year old allen brown made their first appearances in court yesterday. both of them charged with murder. sanders is also facing a special allegation that he knew lei was a police officer during that attack. they are set to return to court january 18th to enter pleas. >> in berkeley. tensions are boiling over between police and protesters at people's park yesterday. demonstrators got physical near cal's campus, according to berkeleyside, 11 people in total were arrested. it started when uc berkeley officials began blocking off the park with shipping containers. for years, the university has been wanting to build student housing on the contested open space. protesters trying to stop construction want to preserve the landmark? >> we need a place where

community members can find each other and learn about their history of berkeley. that's a human right. knowing what your culture is, having water, having food, what we're doing out here is taking advantage of a time of the year when we have very few students, very few people here to be able to do this as safely and as quickly as possible. >> the project is now before the state supreme court. >> construction cannot start until they make a ruling. uc berkeley says streets around people's park will remain closed until the construction site is secured. this map shows the affected area and that includes channing way, hayes street, dwight way and bowditch street. >> new details on a deadly mass shooting at a high school in iowa. iowa. we're learning a sixth grader was killed and five others, including the principal, were hurt. gloria is at the live desk with more on what happened. gloria >> kumasi. this shooting happened on the first day back from winter break. police swarmed the school within minutes of that shooting, and they found multiple victims as students and staff sheltered in place, and some ran from the

building. police identified the shooter as a seven year old student at the high school. middle and high school students were there for a breakfast program. a ninth grader saw the suspect in the bathroom before the shooting. >> it's just traumatizing because honestly, he could have just killed me then and there and i wouldn't be here right now and everything is broken. >> like everyone. like running and like my after that, my, my, like like my mom was telling me to get out of there in social media posts reviewed by abc news, the suspect referenced school shootings and bomb threats. >> in one post, he can be seen holding a revolver. the suspect's friends say he and his sister were bullied, and police have not confirmed a motive for the shooting, according to the gun violence archive, there have already been five mass shootings, so far this year. reggie >> thank you. gloria. on the peninsula, the pacifica pier will be closed for three weeks as it undergoes structural assessment. city officials say the high tides and large waves

in late december damaged sections of the deck and the railing. the pier is a quarter mile long. it's very popular. the city says up to 2000 people visit each day, and it is one of the few piers where people can fish for free every day that people are allowed on it. >> there are people fishing a lot. these are people who do it for a living, you know, do it to feed their families and stuff. um, and so it's a really critical part of pacifica. >> the city says it will combine the findings of the assessment with a separate structural assessment from last spring. for a final report, the public works director estimates repairs could cost more than $20 million. if you're looking for something to do this weekend in capitola village is fully open again for business restaurants and stores are operational after spending nearly a week cleaning up. powerful waves hit the town last week, turning the main road into a muddy mess. the community came together with shovels, along with the help of a backhoe to clear that mud. that same area was inundated by brutal surf

the way to the mexico border. the delays have been to protect groups of migrating whales from becoming entangled in fishing equipment. a mysterious flier is going around lake tahoe with a passionate message telling people to feed the bears. abc7 news reporter tim johns is hearing more about the trouble that lies with the trash. >> the alarm is rising in lake tahoe this week after this flier was found posted around the area . the flier calling attention to the local bear population, saying things like the black bears of lake tahoe are some of the most marginalized and oppressed species of life, and that they spend most of their life going from garbage can to garbage can, finding it locked due to selfish, heartless human beings leaving the bears with absolutely no choice but to starve to death or attempt a home invasion. finally the flier calls on people to actually feed the bears. >> after my first read, i couldn't even decide if is this some kind of sick joke that someone's trying to play on the community? >> 2g cylch is a local tahoe bear expert who says the

information and the flier is false. he says on wednesday, he saw dozens of them posted around south lake tahoe and began taking them down. >> i only pulled about two thirds of them down as i went through town, and it took me two hours. >> experts say these fliers aren't just full of misinformation, though. they tell me that if people take them seriously, they could cause long terme damage to the tahoe bear population. peter tierra of california fish and wildlife tells me he's aware of the fliers and that his department is telling people not to follow them. tierra says feeding bears human food ultimately causes harm to both the animals and people they look for. >> they become addicted to it. they get dependent on it and their behavior changes. you know, it gets more brazen. we see it escalate. >> fish and wildlife is one of several organizations that has called out the posters in recent days. experts say bears are perfectly capable of surviving on their own and better off without human handouts. anne bryant of the bear league says the fliers are antithetical to the values held by most tahoe residents. >> it's disgusting, and a in a

understand that this is pretty much all homemade. it really is. >> and honestly, so the entire body is just a fiberglass shell that protects everything that the structural integrity of the truck uh- the roll cage, all the safety equipment, the suspension on, you know. but the coolest part about it, the body is all hand painted. it's awesome. so it's all airbrushed. you can actually feel the body and you can feel all the brush strokes and stuff like that. not all of the trucks are like that anymore, but that's kind of the mystique of grave digger and but that's just something my dad is creating. and now myself and all my siblings are carrying it on. >> oh my gosh. >> amazing. and that's a total of four kids. you and three other siblings. yes. >> and then we have, you know, three other team members after that. so grave diggers around the nation around the world seven times this coming weekend. so it's a pretty unbelievable thing. >> wow. and tell us a little bit about the engine and the power that goes into this. >> so you know, it has 1500 horsepower. it's based off of like a big block chevrolet truck. but it's all nothing is factory piece. everything is custom made for this. and that enables us to do some of these unbelievable stunts. the tricks

where the balancing acts that we do, um, and sometimes we accidentally do these tricks, and then we got to recreate them on purpose. and sometimes we, the kids show us in video games and they're like, well, maybe we could actually do that. and then we're able to create actual obstacles that make us do those stunts. so like right behind us, right here, we have an awesome obstacle that we have developed and it doesn't look like much, but you can actually do backflips off of this. this is one of the backflip ramps that is located on the track that the dirt crew has come out here, and they take a lot of hours to get it just right. the measurements and i know it seems very simple, but it takes a lot to make a 12,000 pound truck do a perfect backflip. >> that is incredible. well, we are excited to see you go over this ramp this weekend. and for those of you interested in coming out to monster jam, it's going to be happening. this weekend. it kicks off tomorrow with a pit party at 1230. doors open up at 330 and the event starts at five on sunday. doors open at 1230 and it starts at two in the afternoon, and tickets for this start at just $20. live in san francisco lena
