i, and this is expected to change in a few hours. rain is on the way to the bay area. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. part of the weekend will be a stormy one. at least the start of it. yes rain is working its way back into the forecast and the sierra is expecting lots of snow. >> meteorologist sandhya patel is here with what's in store starting sandhya on saturday. >> that's right. and tomorrow it's going to turn wet and windy across the bay area. dan and let's take a look at our level one storm on live doppler seven. it is already pushing into the pacific northwest and we will start to feel the effects of it as early as tomorrow morning. let's start you out with where

the rain will begin. first, in 10 a.m. it's going to be in the north bay. the rain begins to spread as we head into the early afternoon. by 2 p.m, we're seeing pockets of moderate rain along with the gusty winds. it's a level one storm on our storm impact scale. light to moderate rain, gusty slick roads, and still some rough surf. even though that beach hazard statement just expired at 10 p.m, swells remain elevated. a live view from our zephyr cove camera. i can tell you this much. it's not going to be as calm as it looks right now. we do have a sierra snow weather alert. heavy snow at low elevations near whiteout conditions at times with those winds, poor visibility, chain controls, and delays be prepared for hazardous travel conditions. but here's the good news we will get much needed snow in the mountains. this is just a quick preview through sunday. we're looking at about 15in donner and kirkwood. i'll be back with a full look at the wind and rain timelines for the bay area, plus the second half of your weekend forecast coming right up, dan. >> okay, sandy thanks you can

check out the abc seven bay area app for the latest on weather conditions and to access the same doppler seven that sandhya and our weather team use every day. search abc seven bay area in your devices app store to download it. developing news take a look at this a window on an alaska airlines flight blew out mid-air. >> the plane was headed from portland to ontario, california. the. the incident happened shortly after takeoff. a total of 177 people were on board the plane returned safely to portland. no one was hurt. one passenger told a portland television station some passengers had their cell phones sucked out of the plane, and one lost their shirt, according to the faa and the faa records. the plan has only been in the plane, rather has only been in service since october. >> well, as we look to build a better bay area, we have focused a lot recently on san francisco from fighting crime to reimagining downtown. there are a lot of issues to address. tonight we're looking at the san francisco center right on in the heart of the city on market street. adidas announced it is closing its store, joining a

growing list of big name retailers that have pulled out of the mall. and while this is certainly another blow, we want to explore the bigger picture tonight and some of the potential alternatives to bringing in new businesses to fill the vacancy and save the center. abc seven news reporter jim tim johns on the options. governor gavin newsom in los angeles wednesday announcing a new state of the art tech and health research park, a collaboration between ucla and the private sector taking over a space that was once a westfield mall. >> this is a race for global dominance in this space. this is about exponentials. >> meanwhile, up north here in the bay area, our own mall in san francisco is seeing a new store close its doors. adidas announcing friday they'll be shutting down on january 13th. it's not just small space that's becoming more available in san francisco, though. around the city office, vacancies are at record levels. that level now at 35, according to the latest numbers, with all the unused space, there have been questions over whether san francisco could

do something similar to l.a. >> you should be able to take a downtown core and make it into not just a business center, but an innovation center. >> sean randolph works with the bay area council's economic institute. he says since the end of the pandemic, several city leaders have been pushing ways to reimagine downtown. i can only say that there's real interest in the university of california's desire to look at downtown as an option for campus, for housing and a number of things. but it's not just university cities that can take up the empty space, says commercial real estate developer mark ritchie. ritchie says artificial intelligence businesses stand out as a rapidly growing consumer of office space. in recent years, especially in san francisco, we're in the best position nationally to recover from this based on the hope for future tech employment in whatever is the vanguard of tech, experts say new development won't come without challenges, though there are issues of homelessness that are a deterrent. >> uh- for some companies to

come in here, there, um, there are issues of crime. >> however, despite the obstacles, many city residents tell us they'd support the changes, especially if it's done the right way in the housing. >> um, uh, community organizations, uh, after school programs in san francisco. >> tim johns, abc, seven news across the bay. >> now, it's been one week since oakland police officer twan lay was killed in the line of duty. this morning. people gathered in oakland's chinatown to pay their respects in. >> you are all for the began with a traditional buddhist prayer, hymns and a bell ringing ceremony. >> it was organized by the chinatown chamber of commerce foundation. the president of the chamber says it's important to gather in person to remember lee. >> we thought there would be a best way for many, uh, you know, folks, they they couldn't do it online, and they want to send the, uh, you know, the messages

and the condolences to the family. so which is very important for many of us. >> tuan lay is the first oakland police officer to die in the line of duty since 2009. and the official law enforcement memorial memorial service for officer lay is on wednesday. it is open to the public. the service will be held at 10 a.m. at the three crosses church, which is in castro valley. happening tomorrow a formal effort to recall oakland mayor shengtao is expected to be launched. >> it's being led by a former alameda county superior court judge who plans on sending a letter of intent to the mayor. the thinking is tao needs to be held accountable for what's happening in the city. tao hasn't commented on the recall effort. there was a rally today in oakland by community groups urging the mayor to declare a state of emergency. abc7 news insider phil matier joined us on our news at four. he explained why the effort to recall mayor tao is a really sick one. >> they've collected over 300 signatures in order to get the process going, they need 250. the next step will be to go out

and collect 25,000 signatures from the city cities of oakland. the voters of oakland and larry, given the mood not just in oakland, but across the bay area where people feel under siege by crime and both violent crime and petty crime, whether it's burglaries to your car, burglaries to businesses, uh, it's not out of the realm that they could collect the needed signatures to put this on the ballot for november. >> our phil matier talking about what's going on in oakland now, new at 11, a new year and a new law that's aimed at making a night on the town safer. you hear often about people going to a bar and not remembering anything because someone slipped something into their drink. abc seven news reporter tara campbell shows you what's changing to protect people. >> reporter the goal is to make scenes like this more safe in just a matter of months. most bars and nightclubs across the state will be required to have drug testing kits available to help customers know if their drink has been spiked. >> i think it's super important,

primarily women and members of the lgbtq communities. >> assembly member josh lowenthal introduced the ab 1013 early last year. in the fall, it became law by way of example, i have members of my staff that have been roofied. >> there are members of the legislative body that have been roofied. >> lily horton says. it almost happened to her. >> they told me they wanted me to leave with them. so they got a drink and they passed it behind their back. my friend caught that and then, um, defended me. >> bar owners are required to have tests available starting in july, and it's up to them whether they charge customers. tara campbell, abc seven news. there's now a proposal to change a california law which will crack down on car burglaries as they hoped. >> currently, prosecutors are required to prove that a vehicle was locked. that's on top of proving the break in was intentional. now, this often

means getting the victim to testify. in some cases, that could be a real challenge, particularly if they're a tourist from out of town. it's referred to by some as the unlocked door loophole. the bill would eliminate that requirement to prove the vehicle was locked in pleasant hill, a pickup truck crashed into a house. >> look at this, damaging the garage and at least one parked vehicle caused a significant gas leak, which led to an evacuation of some residents and the closure of the street. it was deemed non criminal. the driver remained on scene. p-g-and-e's arrived to evaluate and there is no longer a threat to the public, allowing police to reopen that roadway. today friends, family, swimmers and surfers are all mourning the loss of a well-known swim coach. richard thornton died suddenly this week in santa cruz. richard reportedly collapsed into the water as he was about to go surfing while his exact cause of death is unknown, richard recently fought a battle with multiple myeloma. his family says the cancer wouldn't stop him from surfing as they mourn his death, they find solace knowing he died doing something

he loved. >> he could be in a hospital bed for six months with uh- oxygen tube and drooling on himself and losing weight and everything else. and so what a way to go for someone that loved, loved to the beach and being in the water . >> up until he died, thornton was the coach of san ramon valley aquatics. >> governor newsom has plans to turn san quentin state prison into a rehabilitation and education center. a new report breaks down what would be involved in that, including reducing the population by 30% and retraining the guards. the plan also calls for removing death row. keep in mind no one has been executed at the prison in decades. the project comes with a hefty $360 million price tag, but a state advisory council says that could be cut down by at least a third. >> reducing the population single cells will then give us a better chance, we believe, to ensure that every resident has a comprehensive rehabilitation and

reentry plan from day one. the report also says the prison should conduct restorative justice sessions between inmates and their victims, or survivors. >> the supreme court has decided today to review the colorado supreme court's decision about donald trump. the state's highest court decided to remove the former president and his name from the ballot there. at issue is whether language in the 14th amendment can forbid trump's candidacy because of the january sixth insurrection. colorado is one of at least 18 states where that question has come up. once the supreme court weighs in, it could decide the matter nationwide. >> a couple thought they lost their livelihood when someone smashed into their food truck tonight. they were back in business. who helped get them up and running as if the warriors had enough to deal with already. >> the big injury tonight to chris paul. >> and could apple find itself in hot water with the government? why? there's an government? why? there's an ongoing investigation when abc

hi. you guys ready to order the san jose based food truck baja kitchen is back. >> did you want to do the shanghai lumpia on it to friday night marked the official reopening of serving their filipino american food. the event was outside the children's museum. curiosity in san mateo. number eight. we first met selena wong. the operation manager, and rod reyes, founder of baja, in december. >> there's damage through here. >> it was days after their food truck was sideswiped and heavily damaged by another food truck that someone had just stolen. out of the same lot they were both parked in a month before that, their insurance company stopped covering commercial vehicles. the couple started a

truck at a shared lot as for what's next, the couple are booked out until may. wong and reyes want to thank everyone for helping them get their business on wheels back. >> we're beyond grateful for everybody that's helped us and supported us along the way. and you know, like we're we're glad that we're back up and running and we definitely want to just come back harder and, you know, like support the community that supported us in san mateo. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news a nationwide egg shortage is creating a challenge at the grocery store. >> you may have noticed many local stores are reporting empty shelves and low inventory stores like safeway and lucky's are posting signs asking customers to limit their egg purchases to two packages per family. >> i'm not seeing any eggs as i was in here earlier in the week when they were empty. >> there's not an egg on the shelf, just an empty area. >> it's largely blamed on the highly contagious avian flu,

which has infected millions of egg laying hens. officials say 11 commercial farms between marin and sonoma counties had to euthanize their massive flocks. more people are turning to family farms that are trying to keep up with the demand. right from eggs to crabs, the season still can't start in the bay area. boats and crab pots continue to sit idle at fisherman's wharf. as you can see, the state fish and wildlife department did allow commercial crab fishing to begin north of the sonoma county line today, but not south of it, because an aerial survey still found endangered humpback whales off the california coast. the state says it will check the waters again on thursday, so we'll see the new york times reports. >> the justice department is deep into an investigation of apple, which could lead to a big antitrust case. the government is looking into the company's use of control over iphones and software, which makes it difficult for users to use one product without another. if a suit is filed, it would be the fourth major tech company sued for monopolistic business practices within five years.

to 2ft of snow even higher over the highest peaks. with those snow levels between 2 to 3000ft dropping to 1000 foot elevation on sunday. that's extremely low. and of course, with snow rates possibly two inches per hour, it's going to be dicey getting up there. gusts to 55 miles an hour travel may be very difficult to impossible, so keep that in mind. so tomorrow is not a good day to get up there. heavy snow, windy conditions. but if you do have to go carry the chains sunday is mainly sunny. you're better day. slight chance 27 degrees. so get to enjoy some fresh powder after the storm passes. partly cloudy on monday. i do want to show you the surf from our santa cruz camera. even though the beach hazard statement has been dropped, the swell heights remain elevated and you're going to continue to see rough surf. so just keep that in mind. if you are at the coast tomorrow, follow the storm frost advisory goes up from midnight to 10 a.m. it's for all of these areas inland temperatures dropping down to the low 30s. you can bet there will be frost out there. so protect your tender plants

"aloha" is a very spiritual and very important word to our people. so if you take those five letters, a-l-o-h-a, "alo" announcing as face to face, and h-a enunciate as "ha," that breath of life. it mean compassion, it means forgiveness, it means grace. but most of all, it means love. i could listen to you speak about that all day long. i like to say that aulani is the most hawaii resort because it takes the time to share the culture,

to know the culture, and reflect it, and that is unusual in hawaii. i don't know if people really understand that. yeah, i love that you share that, because what makes it so special is our cast members. because they are not just sharing the story, but they're sharing the story that they've lived because they are from the islands, they were born and raised, and they just add that special touch, that little extra magic.
