of 736 nine max jets after part of a plane appeared to have detach during takeoff. the plane made an emergency landing after passengers described hearing a loud boom and the cabin deep pressurized. abc news reporter jacqueline lee has the latest over night alaska airlines grounding its entire fleet of boeing 737 nine aircrafts amid serious questions about what caused this hole in the fuselage mid-flight. >> there was a very loud noise and it it seemed like something rushed into the cabin and then rushed out shortly after the flight, heading to ontario, california took off in emergency in the air as the cabin depressurize, forcing the pilot to turn around. >> we are emergency. we are depressurized. we do need to return back to. we have 177 passengers. >> oxygen masks were immediately lowered, terrified passengers seeing portland lights from the hole in the plane.

>> so when the oxygen mask came down, my mind was like, oh my god, something is seriously wrong. you could like, hear the heavy breathing and then from there, i just i just kept thinking of my family. it was hard not we were all trying not to panic. >> alaska airlines say the aircraft carrying 171 guests and six crew members, landed safely at portland international airport, telling abc news the safety of our guests and employees is always our primary priority. so while this type of occurrence is rare, our flight crew was trained and prepared to safely manage the situation. investigators still trying to pinpoint just what went wrong. >> one of the questions here for the investigators is going to be uh- was that a mechanical failure or was that some failure in maintenance? >> and the ceo of alaska airlines says they're only grounding these planes as a precaution, and they will only return after safety inspections and maintenance. jacqueline lee abc news, los angeles. >> well, back here at home, a formal effort to recall oakland

mayor xiang tao is expected to be launched today. the effort is being led by a former alameda county superior court judge who plans on sending a letter of intent to the mayor. she says tao needs to be held accountable for what's happening in the city . >> we need to hold her to the same standard to which she tried to hold uh- chief armstrong, and she said basically things happen on your watch. so therefore you have to go. so things are happening on her watch. she needs to go carbon 40 was removed from the oakland police commission by mayor tao. >> tao has not commented on this recall effort, but community groups did. held a rally yesterday urging the mayor to declare a state of emergency. now on this topic, abc seven news insider phil matier joined us on our news at 4:00 on friday, and he explained why the effort to recall mayor tao is a realistic one. >> they've collected over 300 signatures in order to get the process going, they need 250.

the next step will be to go out and collect 25,000 signatures from the city. citizens of oakland. the voters of oakland. and larry, given the mood not just in oakland, but across the bay area where people are, feel under siege by crime and both violent crime and petty crime. whether it's burglaries to your car, burglaries to businesses, uh- it's not out of the realm that they could collect the needed signatures to put this on the ballot for november. >> now, it's been one week since oakland police officer tuan lei was killed in the line of duty. people gathered in oakland's chinatown to pay their respects. >> if you are are for the vigil began with a traditional buddhist prayer, hymns and a bell ringing ceremony. >> it was organized by the chinatown chamber of commerce foundation. the president of the chamber says it's important to gather in person to remember lei . >> we thought it would be a best

in los angeles wednesday announcing a new state of the art tech and health research park, a collaboration between ucla and the private sector. >> taking over a space that was once a westfield mall. >> this is a race for global dominance in this space. this is about exponentials. >> meanwhile, up north here in the bay area, our own mall in san francisco is seen a new store close its doors. adidas announcing friday they'll be shutting down on january 13th. it's such a small space that's becoming more available in san francisco, though around the city office, vacancies are at record levels, that level now at 35, according to the latest numbers, with all the unused space, there have been questions over whether san francisco could do something similar to l.a. >> you should be able to take a downtown core and make it into not just a business center, but an innovation center, sean randolph works with the bay area council's economic institute. >> he says since the end of the pandemic, several city leaders have been pushing ways to reimagine downtown.

>> i can only say that there's real interest based uh- in the university of california's desire to look at downtown as an option for campus, for housing and a number of things. >> but it's not just university cities that can take up the empty space, says commercial real estate developer mark ritchie. ritchie says artificial intelligence businesses stand out as a rapidly growing consumer of office space. in recent years, especially in san francisco, we're in the best position nationally to recover from this based on the hope for future tech employment and whatever is the vanguard of tech, experts say new development won't come without challenges. >> though there are issues of homelessness that are a deterrent. uh for some companies to come in here. um, there are issues of crime. >> however, despite the obstacles, many city residents tell us they'd support the changes, especially if it's done the right way in the housing. >> um. uh community organizations, uh, after school programs in san francisco.

>> tim johns, abc, seven news across the state. >> now, a new proposal could change a california law to help crack down on car burglaries. right now, prosecutors are required to prove a vehicle was locked and that the break in was intentional. this often means the victim has to testify in person, which can be a challenge , especially if the victim is a tourist. some people consider this instance an unlocked door loophole. the bill would eliminate the requirement to prove the vehicle was unlocked right now. speaking of new laws, there's another one aimed to make a night on the town safer. we often hear about people going to a bar and not remembering anything, because someone may have slipped something into their drink. abc seven news reporter tara campbell shows us what's changing to make sure you're safe. >> the goal is to make scenes like this more safe in just a matter of months. most bars and nightclubs across the state will be required to have drug testing kits available to help customers

shot there are a large gathering of anti-government protesters. for the past couple of weeks, they've been gathering to express dismay, satisfaction with the handling of the war in gaza and the failure to release israeli hostages. now nearly 800 miles away, international leaders are making strides to prevent an expansion of this ongoing battle. us secretary of state antony blinken sat down with turkey's leader today. they discussed ways to de-escalate tensions, speed up humanitarian aid to gaza and plan reconstruction after the fighting ends. this stop is a part of several stops that blinken will make in the region, including israel. now to weather. now rain is on the way. let's check in with lisa on the timing. >> all right. it was a beautiful day yesterday. we are going to be at least five degrees cooler, near average today. you can see all the clouds stacked up. the golden gate bridge where it is

right now, but there is some snow expected later today as the area is under a winter storm warning. lisa will be tracking the changes for you coming up in her full forecast in pleasant hill. now a pickup truck crashed into a house, damaging the garage and at least one parked vehicle. it caused a significant gas leak, which prompted evacuations and closures on this street this morning. p-g-and-e's says there is no longer a threat to the public so people can safely return home, and these roads are now back open. the incident was deemed non-criminal and the driver remained on scene and santa cruz friends, family, swimmers and surfers are all mourning the loss of a well-known swim coach. richard thornton died suddenly this

week. we're told he collapsed into the water as he was about to go surfing, while his exact cause of death is unknown, richard recently fought a battle with cancer. as they mourn his death, they are finding solace knowing he died doing something he loved. >> he'd be on a hospital bed for six months with uh- oxygen tube and drooling on himself and losing weight and everything else. and so what a way to go for someone that loved, loved to the beach and being in the water . >> so thornton was the coach of san ramon valley aquatics. well, as you're getting your groceries this weekend, you should know there's an egg shortage in the north bay. many local stores are reporting empty shelves. as you can see here in low inventory stores like safeway and lucky's are even posting signs like these, asking customers to limit their egg purchases to two packages per family. >> now, i'm not seeing any eggs as i was in here earlier in the week when they were empty. >> there's not an egg on the shelf, just an empty area.

>> now, this is largely blamed on the highly contagious avian flu, which has infected millions of egg laying hens. officials say 11 commercial farms between marin and sonoma counties had to euthanize their massive flocks. more people are now turning to family farms, trying to keep up with demand, and it was a meaningful return for a bay area family after their food truck was severely damaged last month. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez explains how the community helped get them back up and running. hi. you guys ready to order the san jose based food truck area kitchen is back! >> did you want to do the shanghai lumpia on it, too? friday night marked the official reopening of serving their filipino american food. the event was outside the children's museum curiosity in san mateo. number eight. we first met selena wong, the operations manager, and rod reyes, founder of baja, in december. >> there's damage through here. >> it was days after their food

truck was sideswiped and heavily damaged by another food truck that someone had just stolen. out of the same lot they were both parked in a month before that. their insurance company stopped covering commercial vehicles. the couple started a gofundme and it didn't take long for the community to help. >> as soon as we posted it, you know, we got tons of support and it was kind of overwhelming. i was just like, wow, this is amazing. >> with over $11,000 of donations, the truck was in the repair shop a week later, staff at curiosity were some of those gofundme donors. >> i think none of us are thriving unless all of us are thriving. and so when you see someone or a group that isn't, you want to reach out and help and that's really what it's all about. >> reyes founded a seven years ago in memory of his mother. he got the truck in 2021. in 2022, a state food code went into effect that allows mobile food operations to be stored at a private home. it's a law not

many small business owners know about, including reyes. >> i could also see how it could be kind of risky. you know, like a food truck is a mobile kitchen. mobile kitchen. and you have a lot of expensive equipment on here as we'll continue to park the truck at a shared lot as for what's next, the couple are booked out until may. >> wong and reyes want to thank everyone for helping them get their business on wheels back. >> we're beyond grateful for everybody that's helped us and supported us along the way. and, um, you know, like we're we're glad that we're back up and running and we definitely want to just come back harder and, you know, like, support the community that supported us in san mateo. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news. well we are on storm watch this morning. >> cold winter rain in the bay area means snow in the sierra, and we know they need it. the storm is expected to dump a lot of it in the lake tahoe area starting today, and it's been a slow start to the winter season.

the first sierra snowpack survey , in fact, showed only a few inches in this area. north star and heavenly have 65 and 70% of their terrain closed because of it. now kirkwood is at around 50, and we also know 55 ski lifts across the tahoe basin are still closed. >> it's a thin base, but this mountain ski is so fun and this snow level, lots of terrain to play with. and, uh, yeah, i think, you know, getting, getting the backside and chair for going, uh, this weekend, this sunday, ideally, um, we'll be set up for the rest of the season ahead. >> and the storm is expected to bring snow that will not only be good for skiing and snowboarding, but also cross country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobile tours. i remember being up there last year where the snow was towering above our camera, and now, as you can see, the area actually really needs it for us here in the bay area though, that rain that's coming with this system, how are our rain totals catching up? >> you know, oakland is about 47% of average and 97% of

average in santa rosa. so there is a ways to go for the east bay, the south bay doing a little bit better. but this next system not going to make too much of a dent in our rainfall deficit, because it's not going to add up to very much. it is going to bring in some cold air, set the stage for our colder systems to arrive for the middle of the week. satellite and radar composite right now showing that the activity is to the north of us, but we get in a little bit closer and we're beginning to see some of the rainfall fill in here offshore and in the north bay from around santa rosa. ten, 11:00, and then sweeping through the rest of the bay area throughout the middle of the afternoon. so a look here from mount tam, where you can see all the cloud cover. it has been a chilly start, colder than what we have been used to 50 though in san francisco that's not too bad, but you look at that 46 in oakland, 47 san mateo and san jose. half moon bay is a mild 5242 here. so certainly chilly

conditions at the coast. and we're out of the 30s for the most part, except for livermore, 39 and into the low 40s for napa and fairfield. now this is going to change tomorrow once the cold front moves through much colder air. a frosted advisory in effect for tomorrow morning likely extended into monday morning. so level one system today, the rain spreading to the south and east, accompanied by gusty south winds. then northwesterly winds. and that will bring for the cold air tonight, even colder into monday. and then a couple of weeks. systems for the middle of the week, cold systems, the end of the week. hopefully building up on that snowpack. so our high surf advisory until this evening , 12 to 14 foot breakers. so this is allowing for the possibility of sneaker waves, rip currents and erosion here at the coast. so good thing to keep in mind. and also we are looking at not only the north bay interior valleys, but our east bay interior valleys and the south bay where it is going to get at or near freezing as we get into early tomorrow. high resolution model shows the north

bay passage of the front by about 1:00, and then two 3:00 as we get into the east bay and south bay. so right here 330 still looking at the rain in san jose, but rainfall amounts are not going to be much anywhere from about a 10th to 2/10 at most here. and this takes us. through about 7:00 today. so as we get into your sunday, it will be much brighter. it'll be colder and these winds will have switched around to the north and west. right now they are switching to the south and west and they will be gusting right along the coast. 29 even up to 40 miles an hour here. and then inside the bay, quite breezy as well. so our winter storm warning will expire 4:00 on sunday. upwards of one to perhaps two feet above 7000ft. elsewhere at the local resorts, we're hoping for about 16in kirkwood, 19in at donner and the highs today ranging from the mid and upper 50s with rain exiting the south bay after about 3:00. here are frosty morning. lows low to mid 30s in the

colorado. so abc news reporter darya elbinger has the latest. >> former president donald trump once again on the presidential ballot in colorado after an historic announcement by the supreme court. the justices say they will hear arguments in the case whether trump should be banned from the state's election ballot for engaging in insurrection against the united states on january six, the colorado supreme court removed trump from the primary ballot, citing the 14th amendment, which prohibits any officer of the united states who swore an oath to the constitution and engaged in insurrection from holding office. the trump team, disputing that ruling in a statement to abc news, a trump campaign spokesman says they are confident the supreme court will affirm the civil rights of president trump and the voting rights of all americans. >> it was inevitable that this was going to end up at the supreme court. >> the supreme court's decision could expand beyond colorado, though similar legal challenges

against trump are underway in more than 30 states. if trump is on some ballots and not on others, that's going to land in their lap anyway. >> so they understand that and they're going to have to resolve this once and for all. >> trump, who denies any wrongdoing related to the events of january 6th, reacted to the supreme court's announcement during a campaign rally friday in iowa. the oral arguments in the supreme court are scheduled for february eighth. the justices could rule on the matter just in time for super tuesday primary elections in march. daria aldinger abc news, new york. >> today marks a somber anniversary in our country's history. it's been three years since the january 6th attack on the u.s. capitol. tens of thousands of trump supporters, as you see here, descended on washington for a rally. then complete chaos overtook the capitol. i spoke to speaker emerita nancy pelosi about the message she has for our country. looking back at the insurrection , here's what she had to say. >> it was assault on the

berkeley's people's park is on schedule and is expected to be completed by tonight. now, that's according to u.s. officials. the university cleared the park early thursday morning. uc wants to build student housing on that land, but protesters want the historic space preserved. seven arrests were made thursday. all were cited and released in marin county. governor gavin newsom plans to turn san quentin state prison into a rehab and education center. and we're learning more about what that would look like. a new report shows the state plans to reduce the population by 30, and retrain the guards. the plan also calls for removing death row. no one has been executed at the prison in decades. now the project comes with a big price tag, a $360 million price tag that is. but a state advisory council said that could be cut down by at least a third, reducing the population in single cells will then give us a better chance, we believe, to ensure that every resident has a

will get the cold front sweeping through the bay area midday around oakland and fremont. a little later than that. as you head to the south. look at that great view from san rafael 50, san francisco 48, in hayward, 47 san jose san mateo is at 48 mid 40s here. it's chilly along the coast and south winds are beginning to pick up 42 santa rosa with 39. in livermore and 40 in napa. so a cold start to your weekend and we're going to bring rain into the afternoon. in the morning hours in the north bay, the afternoon for the rest of us. and then those breezy south winds switching over to a north wind. the cold air settles in a frost advisory for sunday morning until 10:00. this will be extended into monday that should be the coldest morning. we'll see. and then looking at more rain, lighter rain on the way for that tuesday, wednesday time period. and then as we get to the end of the week, things get interesting because we could see more rain and more sierra snow. high surf advisory right on through the

evening hours. you can see the breakers 11 to 14ft. beach erosion and the possibility of rip currents. so dangerous conditions here as you head towards the shoreline. keep that in mind. interior. north bay, east bay and south bay for those frosty readings. first thing tomorrow, high resolution models looking at the north bay passage of the front by 1:00 and then two 3:00 for the rest of you in the east bay, the south bay, the santa cruz mountains, maybe about 4:00, and rainfall amounts . we could see a few heavy downpours, and that will add up to about a 10th to 2/10. and that's about it. so it comes down quick in a short period of time and then is out of here for a cold evening. there's a look at the winds. continue to kick up with the front 1:00. remember it's pushing right on through the north bay there. so 25 to 30 mile an hour winds. and then as we get to about 5:00 we've got the winds gusting to near 40 miles an hour. and it is breezy all across the bay. so a cold day today and even chillier day for your sunday looking, but much brighter winter storm

warning through 4:00 on sunday. 1 to 2ft. that's way above 7000ft. so at lake level we will get the snow. but the ski resorts will see anywhere from about 11 to 9 18in of snow up towards donner lake. so that would be some great news. mid-fifties, windy out there. we'll see those rain drops continue throughout the afternoon in the south bay, but by about 5:00 they should be winding down and as we look at the overnight lows, yeah, could see some frosty conditions for our inland valleys of the north and east bay. so cold night. on the way. the accuweather seven day forecast, a bright sunday. we'll need that to warm up after our rain today in the cold conditions. and then as we look at the middle of the week, some lighter storms. and then by the end of the week could see more significant rain. so we'll keep you posted on that. >> okay. good. and plan for two chilly days to coming up
