into the world. ♪♪ taking a live look outside where you can see it is all clear now, but that was not the case earlier today as rain rolled through the bay area. the. good evening and thanks for joining us. i'm dionne lim. we got another decent soaking today as a storm quickly moved through and is now dumping snow in the mountains. so what does sunday look like? spencer's got the answer. hi there. hi, dion. >> well, it's not going to snow here, but there's a lot of snow falling right now in the sierra. let's take a look. a quick look at live doppler seven. you can see that our storm has left us and moved far to our south. so our skies are clearing here, but

there is still quite a storm raging right now in the sierra. in fact, a winter storm warning remains in effect until 4:00 tomorrow morning for most of the southern sierra, the south of lake tahoe now and we expect up to about 18in of snow. additional snow in the higher peaks. the snow levels down to about 1000ft by tomorrow morning . gusts of wind to 60mph. really hazardous driving conditions. meanwhile, back here in the bay area where our skies are clear, temperatures are going to plummet. tonight we have a frost advisory that will be in effect from midnight tonight to 10 a.m. for the north bay valleys. the entire east bay, including the hills and the valleys and all of the santa clara valley. more on that on the big chill and our seven day forecast. a little bit later. dion i feel cold thinking about it. >> spencer. thank you. well happening now there is a winter storm warning for the sierra that goes until tomorrow morning. interstate 80 and highway 50 are a mess with all of the snow and blizzard like conditions. chains are required for those who are making the drive, though authorities are urging people to stay off the

roads until those conditions improve and you can check out the abc seven bay area app for the latest on weather conditions and access the very same live doppler seven. our weather team uses. just search abc seven bay area in your devices app store to download it for free. well, two developing news now. some boeing 737 max nine airplanes are grounded after an alaska airlines flight had part of its fuselage blown off in midair. it made an emergency landing, and, remarkably, no one was hurt. alaska though, has canceled more than 100 flights today as it inspects its fleet. here's abc news reporter zohreen shah. >> a frightening moment for passengers was an alaskan airline flight flying with a section of its fuselage missing mid-air, something rushed into the cabin and then rushed out shortly after flight 1282 took off from portland international airport, bound for ontario, california, for an emergency in

the air. a large hole developed in the fuselage, causing cabin depressurization, forcing the pilots to turn around with 171 passengers and six crew members on board. oxygen masks were immediately lowered. passengers recorded that that part of the plane was suddenly gone. >> when we are emergency, we are depression sized. we do need to return back to. we have 177 passengers, passenger say they were terrified in the moment. >> a lot of tears. i just didn't know what was going on and i just feel the plane drop and it wasn't like any other turbulence. just because the masks had came down to so that's when i knew, like, oh gosh, this is something way different. um, and yeah, i started freaking out . >> the plane landed safely in portland with no injuries reported. the airline, telling abc news the safety of our guests and employees is always our primary priority. so while this type of occurrence is rare, our flight crew was trained and prepared to safely manage the situation in a team from the ntsb will be looking into what caused this incident.

>> one of the questions here for the investigators is going to be, uh, was that a mechanical failure or was that some failure in maintenance? >> the faa says about 170 boeing 737 max nine planes operated by us based airlines will be grounded. and alaska airlines had already taken the precautionary step of grounding its 65 737 max. all the planes will be inspected before they can return to service, zohreen shah, abc news, los angeles now closer to home, all three bay area airports saw some impact by today's tempoorary grounding. >> of the 737 max nines by the faa. together, oakland sfo and san jose mineta airports saw dozens of flight cancellations. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard says one alaska airlines plane had to return to san jose for inspection. more than an hour into the flight. >> actually, my wife noticed we're going in the wrong direction. we're coming back. >> tom lopez's vacation to puerto vallarta was cut short

saturday, an hour and a half after his alaska airlines flight took off from san jose mineta airport, five minutes later, captain got on and said, we've been instructed we have to go back to san jose. lopez says he heard the captain discuss the plane needed to be inspected. >> he never said emergency. >> saturday, the faa temporarily grounding some boeing 737 max nine airplanes after this alaska flight from portland to ontario lost a cabin door plug mid-flight on friday night. no one was hurt, but lopez wonders why his flight was allowed to take off. >> that was my big thing. i just can't believe somebody dropped the ball and let the plane go off in the air. >> by saturday afternoon, 42 flights were canceled at sfo, including 27 alaska flights and 14 on united. we saw four alaska jets parked on this sfo tarmac, an aviation expert tells abc seven news. the planes are 737 max nines. the faa is requiring

immediate inspections of the planes before they can return to flight. in a statement, the agency saying safety will continue to drive our decision making as we assist the ntsb investigation into alaska airlines flight 1282. mueller family from portland is flying home and feeling a bit uneasy after seeing video of the in-flight emergency on social media. >> so yeah, it's a little concerning, especially since we're like flying the day after. it's kind of a chance you take, like going on planes and, you know, have to get home either way. >> so at sfo, cornell, bernard, abc seven news. new at 11. >> it's been a violent night in oakland. police are investigating multiple shootings. at least two of which turned deadly. one happened just before 6 p.m. at seminary avenue and san leandro street when officers arrived, they found a female victim. she was then taken to the hospital and died. her identity has not been released and no arrests have been made. then, about two hours later, a man was shot near a store on linden street near 30th. police say when they

showed up to the scene, they learned the victim had already been taken to the hospital. they say he later died from his injuries. his name has not been released and no arrests have been made in that case and oakland police are also investigating a shootout that ended with a car crashing into a home. officers were alerted by a shotspotter activation, where they determined two people. people, i should say, in two cars were shooting at each other in the area of east seventh street and 55th avenue, new details now in the fatal shooting of an oakland police officer, twan lay, the east bay times reports. the mother of one of the suspects has been arrested. she's accused of being an accessory after the fact, and alameda county jail records indicate she was in custody, according to the report, the mother of mark demetrius sanders is accused of attempting to destroy evidence and helping him leave the state. she's scheduled to be arraigned on monday and is being held without bail. the effort to recall mayor sheng tao

is officially underway. a letter of intent was sent via certified mail to the mayor this afternoon . organizers say rising crime is a driving factor. here's abc seven news reporter anser hassan signed, sealed and soon to be delivered. >> the recall of oakland mayor sheng tao is officially underway . >> there's too many. there are too many lives that have been lost, too many cars stolen, too many people who've been robbed coming from a bank followed home . too many things. too many businesses have closed. just just, you know, this mayor has blood on her hands. >> a retired alameda county superior court judge, brenda harbin forte, is leading the recall campaign. the letter of intent was sent certified mail to mayor tao on saturday. the letter states. you lack the competency, credibility, judgment and the ability to lead what was once a great american city, the letter says. grounds for the recall include creating a public safety crisis by systematically dismantling the oakland police department, delaying opd's exit from 20 years of federal oversight,

missing the retail theft grant and rising crime businesses were not leaving, leaving oakland at this pace before she came into office. >> so we can't pretend that there's no correlation between her decisions and what is happening with the city now. >> oakland city council member noel gallo says he's surprised by the recall and doesn't support it. he thinks it will create more divisions in city hall, but he adds he supports voter rights to take action. >> people are frustrated. they're disappointed. they want immediate action to bring back oakland to a level where it used to be mayor tao has admitted to mistakes at previous public forums, such as missing a multi-million dollar state grant deadline to fight retail theft. >> i am the mayor, so i take responsibility for that. but mayor tao supporters point to new programs already underway, such as grants for small businesses and new policing initiatives. even as oakland tackles a historic deficit and they argue, though crime may be up, it's not at historic levels.

harbin forte was on the oakland police commission until she was removed by mayor tao last year. the oakland city council member, carol fife, sees the recall as a political stunt. >> it's very disturbing that an individual that was released from the police commission for a number of factors is a part of an effort to unseat a newly elected mayor, harbin forte dismisses such accusations as what's happening in oakland is serious. >> it is significant and we don't need anybody in this process who is trying to are trying to settle a grudge, and i certainly am not doing that. >> mayor tao's office did not respond to requests for comment. the mayor now has seven days to respond to the letter in oakland, anser hassan, abc seven news. >> a hindu place of worship was hit with anti-india graffiti in hayward. vijay sherawali temple was vandalized in support of a sikh separatist movement. it calls for establishing a homeland in northern india. this is the second incident like this

seven news reporter tara campbell with a look at three measures that will be on the ballot. >> we need to dig in and we need to go harder and stronger. >> a plea from mayor london breed saturday, asking city voters to get behind three propositions and not be afraid to make the hard decisions that are going to get us to a better place. flanked by local leaders and in front of hundreds of supporters, the mayor outlined proposition c and f, the first, prop c, is aimed at revitalizing san francisco's downtown. >> downtown is not going to be what it was before the pandemic, but it it can become something better. >> the measure would incentivize investors by waiving the city's transfer tax on office buildings that are converted to housing for the buildings that can be converted from office to

housing, and some of them can be. >> we need to make sure that our very high transfer tax is not making that economically impossible. >> and from housing to policing. prop e looks to lighten the load of paper work on officers right now it's taking up about a third of their time. the measure also makes way for the use of surveillance video drones and facial recognition. >> it's so important to make sure that we are giving the tools, but that doesn't mean we let up on reforms that doesn't mean that we don't focus on making sure that there's clear reporting and transparency. >> and finally, to the fentanyl crisis and proposition f, it would require people struggling with addiction to be enrolled in treatment in order to continue receiving welfare, not requiring them to be clean and sober, but requiring that they be in a treatment program if they want benefits of the city. the mayor first introduced the idea last

year, and it faced immediate scrutiny when they say this is a punitive measure by denying people access to ga, but it's more punitive to me when a person is lying down on the streets and dying and we just walk past them every day, we're not taking away shelter options. >> we're not taking away housing options. we're not taking away the door that opens to help people struggling get the help and the support they need. tara campbell, abc seven news. >> today in san francisco's tenderloin district, hundreds of volunteers turned out for a trash pickup event organized was touted as one of the largest cleanups in the city's history. >> one volunteer says that with all the bad news, we see this is his way of making the city a little bit of a better place. i think the great thing about hope is that it's contagious, and it can take any form that you want, whether that be picking up a little piece of trash on the street or even just saying hello to a neighbor. >> so we're here to spread a little bit of that hope and make

tree still, you can also take it to the dublin sports ground through the end of the month. oh cool. yeah nice hard work building character for. >> that's right. maybe building muscles too. yeah. and those trees and those trees make me think of perhaps the holidays and snow which we are seeing now in the sierra. a lot of it up to two feet in some places. and it's still snowing there. but here in the bay area, the storm that was our storm today is now gone. so looking at live doppler seven, you can see we have quiet weather conditions at the moment and clear skies and the looping satellite radar image shows that storm has moved far to our south. so let's take a look at the futurecast. and you can see starting at midnight tonight, skies will continue to clear going into tomorrow morning we'll start the day with sunny skies. but those clear skies for tonight mean cold weather here in the bay area. meanwhile, speaking of cold weather, winter storm warning is still in effect for a good portion of the central sierra south of lake tahoe, down to mammoth lakes and farther south until 4 a.m, we expect much more additional snow

on top of what has fallen already. snow levels down to 1000ft by tomorrow morning. snow rate two inches per hour. that's quite a bit. wind gusts up to 60mph. travel may be difficult or impossible. meanwhile back here in the bay area, wind is rather calm except down at half moon bay, where we have gusts up to 25mph. now we have clear skies. right now, temperatures are dropping in the 24 hour temperature change shows most inland areas quite a bit cooler, especially in the north bay and going eastward. then at this time last night, two to 6 or 7 degrees cooler. so that's just a hint of what's to come. meanwhile current temperature readings 48 degrees here in san francisco and in hayward and in san mateo, 47 in oakland and san jose, right now, 50 at half moon bay, looking at quiet conditions under clear skies in emeryville. other temperature readings right now 41 at santa rosa and livermore, 35 at napa, right now 37. petaluma and fairfield and 43 at concord and these are our forecast headlines overnight, clear skies, cold inland and a matter of fact, as a matter of

fact, we have two cold mornings coming our way from the areas tomorrow morning. and monday and next week it's going to be unsettled with chances of more rain coming our way for tonight. frost advisory in effect until well from midnight to 10 a.m. for most of our inland areas, especially up in the north bay valleys, the entire inland east bay, the hills and the valleys, and down to the santa clara valley. the entire region under this frost advisory until 10:00 tomorrow morning, temperatures could drop as low as 32 degrees or possibly lower in some spots, and frost, of course, can kill sensitive plants. so overnight you'll see low temperatures right around the bay. yeah, the bay shoreline, mainly in the mid to upper 30s on the coast, low 40s, but it will be quite a bit colder in all of our inland areas. highs tomorrow, mainly in the mid 50s and i mean a very narrow range of highs about 54 to 55 degrees in most burial locations tomorrow. looking ahead, forecast animation starting on monday shows a sunny day on monday, but rain coming in late tuesday into wednesday.

greene was suspended for hitting sun center jusuf nurkic in the face back on december 12th. the league said greene has completed steps that demonstrated his commitment to conforming his conduct to standards expected of nba players. he's met with nba reps, the warriors and the players association, and those meetings will continue throughout the season. espn reports greene expected to be with the team tomorrow for the game against the raptors for the first time since the suspension, and will likely need a week to ramp up for a return to game action. the warriors went seven and five in his absence. chris paul broke his hand in the win over detroit last night and will need surgery next week. currently no timetable for his return. paul is averaging 8.9 points, 7.2 assists per game in 32 games and after beginning the season coming off the bench, paul has started the last four games a tough blow for a team searching for consistency. >> i just feel for him personally because he does such an amazing job of taking care of his body and preparing himself,

cars. in a separate incident. i-team reporter dan noyes worked on that viral video with youtube star mark rober, and has continued to follow leads. the latest a suspect using his own car to drive to various break ins. >> reporter i'm so happy former nasa engineer mark rober set a trap for san francisco's car burglars. >> 25 times over eight months, hidden cameras caught them in the act. once they absconded with mark's backpack, it shot out glitter and a foul smelling spray on. and it started a countdown that made the thieves toss the bag. ten. nine. eight. >> eight. seven. >> six. >> rober even outfitted one car with bulletproof glass just for the fun of seeing their frustration. >> when a juicy piece of luggage was just sitting right in plain

sight, then it was my turn to dig a little, and then you could run the plates and do more of like a in-depth investigation. i think the combination of that worked really well. >> i learned that several of the thieves tried to avoid detection by using stolen license plates on the cars they drove. i showed gerald iseman his stolen plate in rober's video. what do you think about seeing your plate used in a crime like this? >> well, i'm grateful that i reported it. >> some had no plates at all, but in one case, the suspect used his own car with his own license plates. and that's how i found 30 year old chevelle augustine of san francisco. so on october 12th, the thursday evening, he spots one of mark rober's bay cars on bay street near the embarcadero. sees traffic coming, so he gets back in when it's finally clear, he emerges and strikes the backpack that rober built sends a text that it's been stolen. the on board cameras catch augustine

going through the bag. a minute later comes the message fart spray cannon fired. you can hear the servo motor. no audible reaction from augustine, but he throws the bag out the window. a little over an hour later, chevelle augustine has made his way to the palace of fine arts and another of robbers, bay cars from four different angles. you see him break into the car and take the backpack. once i ran his plate and found his information, i checked san francisco superior court records . get this. after he failed to appear in a car burglary case from july, a judge issued a $35,000 bench warrant for augustine's arrest. but the charges second degree burglary of vehicle and possession of burglary tools. what's meant to be a legitimate car escape tool? in that case, police say they recovered us indian and euro currency from augustine's car and jewelry in a baggie, watches and more in his criminal
